a bowl of soup and a roll

We were recommended this Vietnamese restaurant by a nail technician when we had our pedicures done. Upon entering we were immediately greeted and were seated. We ordered pho and spring rolls. The service was a bit slow, I noticed a group that came in after us were served their food before us. The pho broth here tasted closer to how my mom would make it at home but a lot saltier. The spring rolls tasted like how it should taste, nothing special. Although I wished that they cut the spring roll into smaller pieces so it is easier to eat. The interior is pretty dated and unassuming. The carpet on the floor was a bit weird not gonna lie, but I was here for the food not the ambiance lol. The prices were fair, similar to prices in Toronto. Overall, it is a decent place to have an inexpensive meal. The carpets are weird but if it's not a dealbreaker, definitely give this place a try.

Fantastic place. Love the soup. Always a big bunch of amazing fresh basil. So glad it's in the neighbourhood. Eat here once a week.

On good days their sandwiches are delicious. They like locals and other Canadians, I would say they are good for friend groups but I don't think this is a place for tourists. I loved their Corned Beef Sandwich and they approved the request for cheese to be added. Their Philly Cheesesteak was pretty good but not the best I've had. Overall I kind of like this place but it's seen better days. I hope more business and success helps.

Next, after handling the bread and other ingredients with her gloved hands, she began to handle the uncooked bacon that was ultimately going to go on my sandwich, also using the same gloves. She was preparing to quickly microwave the bacon before placing it on the sandwich. I pointed out to her that she should not be handling the bacon right out of its package with the same gloves that she was using to touch all the other ingredients. Instead of correcting course, by apologizing, switching gloves, or doing something else reasonable, this food handler began to strongly argue with me that the bacon was "already cooked." Why the use of the microwave then? Was it just to warm up the bacon? I did my research online. Packaged bacon is "cured", which means that it is prepared with salt and nitrates to inhibit the growth of bacteria. However, uncooked bacon, especially if it has been left open and unthawed for sometime, can still harbour bacteria and cause food poisoning. So no, I do not want someone handling uncooked bacon with the same gloves that they use to handle all the other ingredients. I especially do not want someone arguing with me about this!

The duck had ALL THE SKIN AND FAT TAKEN OFF OF IT! There was only skin on the leg. It looked purposely taken off. Wtf? That's the best part! The shrimp in black bean sauce had 9 small shrimps in the whole dish. I've never had veal that was the colour of chuck roast... The portions were small. The "deluxe" dishes we ordered were stingy. All the meat was overcooked and dry. It sucks to say goodbye to an old friend, but I don't think I'll be going back.

Winnipeg's Chinatown was so tiny that you'd blink and you were done walking the whole thing. Osborne Village did not have a northern Chinese eatery until this place opened up. It was and continues to be steps away from my favourite used music and DVD store. You walk downstairs to get to this restaurant. Even though I lived two blocks away, I probably did takeout once. Most of my meals were delivery. I'd call in my order and one of the family members (mainly the dad back then) would happily come over to deliver my food. I have dined here a couple of times. Spicy Noodle House became my go-to place for yumminess and a bit of home cooking away from home. My favourite meal was the beef brisket in noodles. The beef brisket was tender and incredibly flavourful. It reminded me of how my mom made it, but without the turnips. This place took them out, which I appreciated! The noodles were thick and chewy. The broth was so good. I never had a disaster with the broth getting delivered to me. I also got these huge dumplings that were filled with pork goodness. Sadly, I don't see them on the menu anymore. However, if you get something similar, such as their wontons, you can't go wrong. They are so delicious and comforting. This place is generous with portions. I have also had their mooshi. I've done the pork, beef, and chicken. I am missing the vegetable to complete my mooshi mission. It was all good. It's funny how I only have had mooshi in Winnipeg. Maybe cold evenings scream mooshi as comfort food to me. I passed by this eatery the last time I was in Winnipeg, and was happy that it's still alive and kicking. I am salivating writing this review. I need to return and get reacquainted with the food again. (134)
