This place has changed. My last visit was a year ago. Just visited today and food quality and menu have changed. They seemed to have a new owner. Its no longer authentic. Ordered chicken salad wrap. Instead of using grilled chicken, they used packaged chicken breast chunks. Ordered lemongrass chicken platter. I had an ok experience dining here. When I get off a plane I like having Pho as it's such a comfort...so I've had a lot of Pho due to my travels. I ordered the salad rolls with pork and shrimp...structurally very substantial in size and full of stuff. One could just order a few of these and have a nice filling meal. That said, the peanut sauce wasn't particularly creamy or pea-nutty. The pho is served in a moderately size bowl, but they didn't offer a lot of sprouts or basil. The salad roll had basil as a garnish and I put them into the pho. Also, there wasn't a lot of depth of flavor in the soup base itself...it wasn't watery just bland. Lastly I order the crepe sweet potato and shrimp. To describe this as a "crepe" has never had a crepe (made in the French tradition). It's not at all pancake like and more like a hash brown with shrimp. It was good and crispy but not at all what I expect. The restaurant has amazing ambience, kudos to the decor...with a wall length mural of a peacock and hanging paper lanterns...the restaurant looks exotic. Lastly, service was also just ok, not special or fast. Also, I got my entire order all at once, which I hate especially since I like having Pho hot. When one gets everything at once stuff gets cold! The cooks have no sense of timing (seemingly) and are more concerned about getting the order out. Overall, it's a beautiful restaurant full of charm with ok food and care for the customer. If you're not as exacting as I am about Pho and dining out in general...you may like it...the food is certainly filling. read more

Was looking for a pho restaurant for supper and decided to give Pho Hoang a try based upon Yelper's reviews. Staff were efficient and I was seated quickly without any wait. Opted for the rare beef pho and summer rolls. Pho offerings only come in one size (I would have had larger). I would say the portion size is a medium compared to many other places. The pho broth was fragrant but maybe a bit sweet for my taste. The summer rolls were quite large with IMHO too much rice noodle. All in all was quite a good meal. read more

I've eaten here twice and I have to remark that this restaurant seems well maintained. It is clean and the ambiance is quite nice. I liked my Sweet potato shrimp crepes. I really liked how crispy and soft they were. A lot of Chef skills went into making them this way and it tasted delicious with the lettuce wrapped around it then dipped in the sweet sauce. My friend had the Beef noodle Pho and he really loved the meat part. I tried some of the noodles that he didn't eat. I noticed while slurping up the noodles that the broth was very salty and beef flavoured. The noodles were heavy in my mouth and it made me feel sleepy and calm as if I was eating turkey meat. My friend seemed fine and I was the silly one feeling sleepy while we walked around the neighbourhood talking. I don't eat meat things often let alone beef broth. Their bubble teas are super delicious though! The Avocado bubble tea is yummy but the avocado taste didn't seem as fresh and as organic as it could have been. The Egg pudding was perfect! I could tell by the delicious smell that hit me when I walked into the restaurant that I was going to get some good food. I ordered the spring rolls with pork and shrimp. I believe it was 3-G. I also ordered Vermicelli noodles with pork and egg rolls. I took them back to my hotel room and enjoyed the food from start to finish. The spring rolls came with a delicious peanut sauce. They were perfect. The food was fresh and cooked perfectly. The noodles came with carrots, lettuce, cucumbers and pork. I mixed them all up and then added the sauce. The fusion of flavors that hit my taste buds when I started eating it was just what I was hoping for. I was going to take pictures, but the food was gone too fast. Sorry. The only suggestion I would make is to have the pork cut up a bit smaller. I was only given a plastic fork and it was not made to cut meat. Coming from North Dakota, there isn't much authentic vietnamese food in the area, so when we came to Winnipeg, we were hoping for really good authentic food. Since we came for New Years Eve, we wanted some nice hot soup while it's cold outside. I had the beef stew rice noodle soup, which has become my go-to in most pho places. The broth looked promising, but I didn't really get any hint of that beef stew broth feeling when I took a sip. The carrots also didn't melt very well with the broth, which might have contributing to the lack of stew broth feel. The noodles were good, and the beef itself was quite chewy. The decorations were quite nice, definitely not what you expect when you look at the exterior. However with the nice decorations, the prices are a little higher than your typical run off the mill Vietnamese joint. Despite the high reviews and excellent service for this place, I unfortunately found Pho Kim Tuong on Ellice better, and will likely stick to that if I'm in the area. read more

Stopped by for lunch on my way out of town. Very good choice if I do say so. I just missed the lunch rush at 11:45am so getting in before noon is advisable. I ordered the #59 House Deluxe Vermicelli with a extra spring roll or two. The pork skewers were delicious as was the entire meal. The beef was off the charts scrumptious, tender with the perfect amount of sweet and spicy. The only issue I had was them being understaffed. We came here for dinner yesterday and ordered the house delux vermicelli to get a sample of everything. Let's just say it was so delicious we are back for lunch and we ordered the same thing. The sugar cane shrimp are finely rolled out, wrapped around sugar cane and then battered and fried. The pork skewers are crispy yet soft and the pork (non skewer) is soft and tasty. Honestly the only thing here I was not in love with was the regular shrimp. Not because it was bad by any means it just wasn't at the same level of amazing as everything else. This was my first time trying out Pho Hoang, I had heard many good things, and i was not disappointed. I ordered the deluxe beef pho, and it was soooooo good. The broth was rich and flavourful, all the beef was cooked nicely, and the usual accompaniments of Thai basil and beans sprouts worked well and provided a nice texture variation. I also got the young coconut pandan bubble tea, it was super good, and the bubbles were the perfect consistency. The food came out hot and fast, and the service was friendly and helpful. I handed the lady the $20 bill and she did not want to accept it just because there was a little rip on the bill. casinos still accept ripped up bills. Found this restaurant through Yelp on a visit to Winnipeg. Nothing to complain on their food. Great food, great setting/atmosphere, not so honest bill. Payment is made at the counter, not at your table, thus, I walk up to the counter and asked for the bill. The server tells me the total amount and inputs it onto the terminal for credit card payment, after adding the tips, transaction is completed. I asked for the proper bill for my work expense, and she gives me my bill with slightly lower total amount on the total than what I paid as the total on the credit card processing machine. I realized this after I left the restaurant. Amount was about $0.80? different, very small and not significant, but upsetting for the fact that this would happen and the server did not correct this. In fact it tool her about 2 mins to issue me a bill at the end, I am positive she knew the amount she told and on the bill was different. When I asked, this is considered a fraud, according to my credit card company and Ill likely do a charge back when I get back to Toronto. read more

The best pho in town!!! My daughter's boyfriend had been bringing it over while she was sick. Curiosity got the better of me and I ordered it thru Skip The Dishes to work one day. I was hooked! After a few weeks (ordering at least once a week haha) I had half the office wanting to order too. The broth was spiced just right and they don't skimp on the add-ins. I enjoy that you can mix it up and have a different experience with the same order. Everything was fresh and the quantities were more than adequate (sometimes it has made two meals for me).
