Whatever it was Pho Saigon Viet-Nam served me up the best Satay Beef Pho I ever tasted. I started my lunch meal with spring rolls ($5,00). They were good but not the best spring rolls I ever had. The roll I thought was a bit chewy. Next came the Satay Beef ($12) which totally flavored the Pho. It was the best Pho I ever had but mind you I am no expert. They have a strange business model in that a small bowl is $11 and a large bowl is $12. It came out piping hot. I had to let it sit, as well as, blow on the broth to cool it down. The staff was tri-lingual. Imagine that! The food came out quick. It seems a lot of locals dine here. The restaurant is located in Chinatown. The street entrance is below ground level. The restaurant is somewhat dated and upkeep could be improved. The food is a 5 STAR in my opinion.

The restaurant was relatively empty. Tabletops had a bit of a stench to it and the menus handed to us were sticky. Not one to judge a book by its cover and these conditions are fairly common in Chinatown. The menu was pretty extensive with all the common dishes. I really wanted some banh cuon or banh uot, but on a frigid night, I felt like some pho would hit the spot instead. The bun bo hue and banh canh were very enticing to me; those would've been great options on a cold night as well. Prices were reasonable ranging from 12-16$ based on size. We ordered a small and medium; instantly regretted not getting a bigger size though because I def could have eaten more. Broth was darker than normal. Nothing stood out about the broth, but it was pretty spice-forward and still very much hit the spot. They surprisingly loaded up on the meat; I've never had this much meat in my bowl of pho at any other restaurants. The noodles were also cooked perfectly! Realistically I probably wouldn't come back here as often if my other usual spots were open, but I'm especially grateful they were welcoming during holiday hours. I noticed that the banh xeo and some other dishes were cheaper than other places though, so maybe I'll return for that. CASH ONLY.

But briefly, we got a spring roll (I think it was the sprimp and chicken), a chicken dish (I think we got the half chicken), a pho dish and the grilled chicken and shrimp with salad and vermicelli. The spring rolls were good. Very crunchy wrapping, mixed with a fusion of veges, protein and vermicelli. The half chicken was my least favorite dish. I think it's an acquired taste, but the meat was tough to chew and the sauce was a quite tart. Combining all the factors mentioned above, it was a bit difficult to eat. The pho was good. The soup brough was warm, hearty and filling. The noodles were good too - very soft and easy to eat. The vermicelli dish was also good. Very standard protein and vege vermicelli dish. tucked away in montreal's chinatown, this feels like one of those old school neighbourhood spots…read morewhere you come for a straightforward vietnamese meal, not a polished dining experience. we stopped by for a late monday lunch as a party of four, and the vibe was exactly what you'd expect from a no frills chinatown restaurant: casual, functional, and busy enough to make you feel like the locals know something you don't. the service, on the other hand, was very much on the "you'll be fine" side of things. once we were seated, we were pretty much left to our own devices. the staff took our order, brought out the food, and that was about it. we asked for four bowls and were given only two. one of our drinks was also wrong, and it took a bit of explaining to get the correct one. she never took the wrong drink away, and we thought they had forgotten the order, by the time it finally arrived, we had already finished eating. so, definitely not the place to go if you're looking for attentive, doting service. but honestly, it also feels like part of the character here. there's no fuss, no drawn out meal, and no one hovering around wondering if you'd like another glass of water. you come in, eat, and get on with your day. i started with the vietnamese iced coffee, which came already mixed rather than with the traditional slow drip. it was cold, sweet, strong, and exactly what i needed to wake me up for a late lunch. no complaints there. we also shared a shrimp and pork salad roll to start. nothing fancy, just a straightforward take on the classic that worked nicely as a light appetizer with two dipping sauces before the mains. the highlight was the extra large bowl of pho. the broth was on the lighter side, with a delicate flavour that wasn't overly rich, salty, or heavy. we also ordered some kind of minced meat and rice dish, which was equally simple and satisfying. and i think that's really the appeal here. vietnamese comfort food, generous portions, a casual setting, and very little fuss. the food does most of the talking, and everything else is pretty much background noise. one thing to know before you go: it's cash only. luckily, there's an atm inside the restaurant, so if you show up cashless, you won't have to go wandering around chinatown looking for an atm. overall, this is the kind of place that feels much more local than polished. a late monday lunch in chinatown, a giant bowl of pho, minimal service, cash only, and absolutely no frills. sometimes that's exactly the vibe you're looking for.
