We arrived around dinnertime on a recent weeknight and the place was almost empty. We snagged a comfy booth near the front of the restaurant and began perusing the menu. I knew exactly what I wanted, though, so I was mainly going through the motions for the benefit of my dining companion. I almost always get the exact same thing when I first try a new Vietnamese restaurant, and so it was that I ordered the Grilled Beef & Spring Roll with Vermicelli. It arrived a short time later accompanied by the requisite dish of fish sauce and it certainly looked promising. And indeed, it's a decent-enough variation on this venerable dish. All the components are well prepared and assembled, and the fish sauce perfectly ties everything together. However, I can't say I was exactly blown away by the dish. Everything about it felt awfully middle of the road, and I was disappointed that the beef didn't contain that grill-forward flavor I associate with this meal. Still, I enjoyed eating this dish and I'm fairly certain I will again. Maybe next time, however, I'll try a bowl of their Pho. It's probably the thing to order there, given that the word "pho" is in the title of the place.

**Covid takeout review - April 2021**…read more After a year of not having pho, I finally caved in and ordered takeout. Pho is usually a sit-down, dine-in experience with the large soupy bowl of noodles, so I was hesitant on ordering takeout. To my surprise, my at-home pho experience was amazing! I order a large, house special pho and I think the portion is bigger than if I dined in (how is that even possible?). For $11, there was enough food for my dinner and next day's lunch. The noodles, meatballs, tripe, beef tendons, basil leaves and bean sprouts came in a large square foam container, while the soup filled up an entire tall styrofoam container. The soup was flavourful, the food was cooked to order and I have since made it my once-a-week treat for myself. I've also order the vermicelli noodles with grilled chicken (or pork) which comes with 2 super crunchy and hot spring rolls (one vegetable, one pork). My husband enjoyed the fried rice (it's sweet and I think there's some fish sauce in it) with lemongrass grilled pork. I'm fortunate that Pho Ao Sen is just up the street from my place. It's given me something to look forward to every week during this gloomy lockdown.

My mom tried the chicken pho and I dont like the chicken from there - pretty much shredded chicken breasts, which lacks the moist and softness of the chicken thighs which I think is what's used in the rice dish.

I really feel like the quality has fallen off so much since I last came here a few years ago and honestly it is just so difficult for me to recommend now. They did renovate and I thought the Vietnamese city names above each table was quite cool. Service was fine but nothing outstanding. We ordered their large special pho for $15.5 , grilled chicken with steamed egg rice for $15, deep fried squid for $8 and their mango fried fish for $18. Everything just tasted so painfully average. The deep fried squid was way too salty and there was only a few pieces. The mango fried fish was quite good and moist but the mangoes were just too tart and hard. They are "cheaper" compared to other Vietnamese restaurants but I felt like their portion sizes is also a lot smaller. I would say their large pho is pretty much like medium at other places. Their grilled chicken rice only came with 1 piece of chicken whereas other places would give two pieces. One good thing is they take Amex which is always really nice for me lol. This is now the type of restaurant that I would come to eat only when I am around the area and really want some Vietnamese food. But there are just so many better Vietnamese restaurants in the city now. After eating here this time, I understood why there were so few customers. Many of the waiters were just sitting around dawdling since there was just nothing for them to do.

The Saigon Tamarind Tea is a must-order--refreshing, well-balanced, and one of the best tamarind drinks I've had. The Duck Herbal Noodle Soup (Mì Vịt Tiềm) is very authentic with a rich herbal broth and a massive, tender duck leg. If you're not used to traditional herbal soups, the aroma can be quite strong, but that's part of its authentic flavor. My favorite is still the Crab Noodle Soup (Bánh Canh Cua). The portion is a little smaller than I remember, but it's still packed with crab and toppings, and the taste has remained just as delicious. We also tried the $28.95 combo, which offers great value with generous portions and a nice variety of dishes. Overall, Pho 90 continues to deliver authentic Vietnamese comfort food made with quality ingredients. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that some portions have gotten a bit smaller over the years, but we'd still happily return whenever we're craving traditional Vietnamese food.

Pho house seemed to be a family run business and the restaurant was almost empty when we got there on a Friday night. We were pointed to a table for seating and a very friendly waiter brought out some tea and a GIANT menu. After browsing their impossibly long menu, we opted for avocado shake, Bun rieu, Pho tai and seafood Bahn cahn do bien with a side of avocado & shrimp fresh rolls and an avocado salad (not pictured here, but was not great). Lots of avocado this night. :D We found all the soups to be overly salty here. Pho broth would have been ok, but it was just too salty to enjoy this bowl to the fullest. The saltiness of the bun rieu broth was less noticeable, thanks to the acidity from the tomatoes that somewhat cut through it. The flavour from the crab was unpleasantly pronounce though, almost as if the crab meat used for the soup was not at its best. My bahn cahn was perhaps the most disappointing item as I had high hopes for this noodle soup which is rarely found in Viet restos we frequent. Although the broth was complex and tasty (still salty), the toppings for this special seafood noodle soup were rather lacking. The biggest disappointment was the noodles though. It was not the bouncy tapioca & rice flour Vietnamese udon I was excited for, instead, the restaurant used the store bought Japanese udon noodles (wheat noodles) which was a real let down for me. Our overall experience here was not great, so it's doubtful that we would return for another visit.
