The Pho House is a casual, highly-rated Vietnamese restaurant located at 32-05 36th Ave. It is well known for serving 100% Halal Vietnamese cuisine daily, including deeply flavorful beef broths that are slow-simmered for over 10 hours. I was trying to avoid a bar or restaurant showing the England v Croatia game, as I thought England might lose. It was 2 to 2 at halftime, so I wandered down 36th Ave and decided to review Pho. Of course, they had the game on, and I said to myself, What the hell. I kept my fingers crossed. Pho's options range from regular Pho ($15.95) and Large Pho Beef Combo with brisket, steak, and beef balls ($18.95) to premium Pho Beef Short-Rib ($23.95) and a spicy Lemongrass Soup ($19.95). Both the beef and veggie phos are gluten-free. My recommendation is the Pho Beef Combo, and it was a great choice, as by the end of my meal, England won 4:2. read more

We came by to pick up an Uber Eats order, so we didn't get to have dinner at the restaurant, but it looked pretty spacious with plenty of seating. For two of us, we ordered the shrimp summer rolls as well as the vegetarian pho which came with seasoned tofu and broccoli in a beef broth. The pho portion was huge so we were glad we ended up splitting it. I really liked the noodles and the broth, but I made a mistake in combining everything all at once because the seasoning of the tofu messed with the flavor of the broth. Flank and Brisket Pho Noodle Soup - huge bowl and portion size. Broth was clean and good, but a little plain for my taste. I asked for jalapenos to spice it up a little. Was pretty good, but raw jalapenos, not cooked in the soup. The noodles were fresh and nice and chewy, and the soup had a lot of meat. Definitely a big portion. It was a cold windy day, so everyone was getting the soup, but I was also interested in the banh mi sandwich. Service was ok, not the friendliest, but seemed like it was just one server so perhaps she was busy. Spring rolls were delicious. Crisp and warm, with lot of meat filling, juicy and flavorful. Comes with a lettuce wrap and fish dipping sauce. Wish they gave a few extra lettuce leaves, but the ones we got were fresh. First time trying Vietnamese and this place in the neighborhood. Convenient location right by the Broadway stop in Astoria. Clean interior and good for a casual lunch in the neighborhood. Got kind of cold inside because the door with people coming in and out from outside, but it was otherwise a nice comfortable ambiance. Went here for lunch on a Saturday, and it was busy but not too crowded. There's enough seating and people dining solo, too. I don't often go dining out for Noodle soups because I'm a little picky on those, so not sure if I'll return for that, but may try the banh mi sandwich another time. If you want the most mid and mild bowl of pho, but a super quiet and calm dining experience, then come here. They don't play music and service stays generally to themselves behind the counter, it's a quaint store that has fast service. Wish the broth had more flavor. read more

I came back here to get banh mi for takeout (you can order via yelp without a fee or inflated prices!). The bread wasn't as crisp since it had cooled down, which is fine. Besides the traditional, I tried the: - Catfish: this had a slightly weird cinnamon-like spice to this. Yes this place serves pho and I guess it'll suffice if you're desperate. That being said, I've ordered from here three times and each time I'm not impressed enough to finish to pho, there's something about the taste where there's that old kitchen oil grease taste stuck to it which I've never encountered before in pho. Imagine you have a stove you never clean, or you clean it with expired oil and that makes it into the food I don't quite know how to describe it. Maybe it was just the couple months I ordered from them earlier this year but it's put me off ordering again. The restaurant itself looks hospitable enough and they serve what they say they'll serve with good portions and in a quick enough time frame. I got the banh mi special and it was good! The bread was soft and not stale and crumbly like some other places tend to be. The meats did not smell and had a good ratio to vegetables. The flavor was good and mild, so I added sriracha, I wish they had an option to add jalapeños, maybe they do but I didn't pay attention. They didn't add too much of the Vietnamese cold cuts but I honestly prefer it that way because it didn't feel so heavy. It was well balanced with the vegetables. For $10 it's not bad considering other places sell it for $12 and up. My mom had their vegetarian noodle bowl and thought it was okay but would have liked more mushroom and tofu. This Combo Banh Mi totally exceeded my expectations! I wasn't expecting much because it looks kind of thin and lacking, but it turned out to be seriously delicious. At first, it doesn't look like there's a lot of meat and fillings, but the flavors are actually incredible. It is Closer to the size and iteration of the ones that they have overseas but the lack of protein in it was kind of offputting given that I can get a better sandwich elsewhere for just a little bit more money. We were both craving some good ol' classic banh mi and they delivered! Well, actually we went to get takeout from them.. They delivered on the taste. I ordered the tofu mushroom bahn mi and my friend opted for the pork classic special. I wasn't a fan of the bread bun they used but I enjoyed the mushroom flavor. 4.5 stars. I noticed this new Vietnamese restaurant quietly had their grand opening the other day as I was heading to the take the train. I tried to find more info online but could not find a website nor any social media accounts. So, I decided to stop by after work and just try them out. I ordered the following to go: Fried Catfish Tacos ($10.89): the tacos were okay. It comes two (tacos) per order. The catfish is fried and topped with pickled carrots, cucumbers, bib lettuce, and spicy mayo. By the time I got it home, the fish were no longer crispy. It also could have used more of the spicy mayo (which wasn't spicy at all) or maybe a couple of slices of lime to spritz on the tacos. Banh Mi Special ($10.89): Was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. It had pork belly, pork roll, pate and topped with pickled carrots, cucumber, cilantro and daikon. At first glance, I was disappointed by the amount of protein and thought it could have used more slices of pork belly and pork rolls. So, I was completely amazed after the first bite. It hit all of the flavor profiles of a great banh mi: savory, sweet, slightly salty and aromatic. The baguette was fresh, crusty and held all of the ingredients together well. Also, this sandwich could easily be shared by two people. Pho with Flank & Brisket ($17.42): The portion was large (especially for take-out). They didn't give a lot of herbs surprisingly, but it had thinly sliced onions, bean sprouts, cilantro and a few pieces of mint. The noodles themselves were delicate and silky. And the broth was quite good. Honestly, this was so satisfying to eat, very filling and yummy. Happy to report that I enjoyed the food. I am stoked about a new pho/Vietnamese joint in Astoria and so far this one shows promise! Their banh mi sandwiches have been thoroughly satisfying, warm baguette, crispy on the outside and soft inside, not too doughy. I've tried the special (ham and pate) and grilled pork and both were really delicious in their own ways. The special doesn't look like a lot of meat on photo but it was pretty filling. They don't put jalapeños in but gives you a container of siracha which does the job. Grilled pork was very nicely seasoned and packed with chunks of meat. I'd say pretty worth it for $10.89 (w/ tax). Very authentic Vietnamese food and great value for what you get! Portions are a generous size and we love the bahn mi sandwich (we got grilled chicken) and the catfish rice vermicelli salad (lots of lettuce which I appreciated)! We also had a side of plain pho broth (different from what I'm used to but my partner liked it)! Friendly staff and service was quick! They were pretty busy for a weeknight but we felt attended to whenever we needed!! We definitely plan to come back and try out more items. Cleaned bathroom and ambience was comfy! Also, the Google map directs you to the wrong location, we brought it up and they were aware and have requested Google to correct this but it would take 30 days process. My bf picked up some pho and a banh mi for me here because I was feeling sick and what's a better remedy than a warm bowl of noodle soup? Unfortunately, it was a letdown. For $16, it was probably the smallest bowl I've ever seen. The meat was also overcooked. The broth was alright as there wasn't much flavor. New Vietnamese spot on Broadway in Astoria. Beautiful interior! Service was great and the menu has lots to choose from. My girlfriend and I split a bowl of pho and an iced coffee. The pho was hearty and clean; I liked the chew of the noodles, the clarity of the broth, the volume of tender meat. I asked for jalapeños and also added a healthy dollop of chili oil: spicy! A wonderful Viet addition to the neighborhood! They have great portions for the price and their protein options are all so savory and delicious! My favorite entree is the vermicelli noodle salad with catfish. It is so filling and refreshing. The pho is fantastic too, but there is sadly no vegetarian option since they only have beef broth. Their tacos are also a great appetizer option! They are never too crowded since they just opened up. I ordered take out the other day. I ordered the pho and the shrimp summer rolls. The pho soup was a little too oily for my liking. They also put a lot of parsley and cilantro that I had to scoop some out and I normally love the greens. The summer rolls were not what I'm traditionally used to. They had so much carrot that I felt like I couldn't taste the other ingredients. The pho flank and brisket comes in a really large bowl. Mixing the contents, it's actually the right amount of noodles. The meat is cut in much smaller pieces than other places, which gives off the illusion that there's more meat than you think. But it also allows for more meat to noodle bite ratio, which is a plus. I knocked one star because the broth lacked depth of flavor and for me, pho broth is what makes the dish.
