I ordered shots and they were sorta more like half shots. That's the only thing keep this place from being five stars. It might have something to with the fact that they were in a dry county I dunno. If I lived in the area I would likely be calling the Happy Cajun my second home. The bar is full of locals. It was a Saturday night when we stopped in and every Saturday is karaoke night. Steve H and I quickly made friends with the guy running the karaoke - he was awesome and did a great job! I drank some gin and tonics and had a couple of shots and enjoyed the atmosphere. The shots were a little small, so not sure what was up with that. I assumed it had something to do with the dry county and how you have to have a membership to drink. This is the kind of place where people are friendly and everyone is welcome it seemed. I saw all walks of life in the bar, which is always a good thing. The bartenders were great! There were pool tables and people having a great time all around. I could tell the people singing karaoke get lots of practice and likely sing the same songs over and over, but that is another reason why this bar was so awesome. It almost felt like going back in time a bit here too. The bar is a little divey and kind of a whole in the wall place, but this all adds to the persona of the bar. If you are camping down the road at Martin Dies State Park or just need a place to get away, have a couple of drinks and meet some nice people then stop in at the Happy Cajun because this place was bad-ass and a diamond in the rough!

I ventured to my Dad's hometown of Silsbee, Texas for the 4th Annual Battle for the Paddle washer…read moretournament and BBQ cookoff. This was a great event to raise money for the Boys and Girls club. The majority of the event was held out back in the large grassy area. It was a beautiful day and it seems a great time was had by all. Once the BBQ cookoff had ended, everyone went inside for the judges to announce the results. After judging a live band played the rest of the night. The band was great. They played all kinds of classic country songs and even a few new ones. The venue was much larger than I expected. There was a huge dance floor and many tables spread all around the sides and in the bar area up front. One odd thing? The bar did not have tonic water. No vodka or gin and tonics could be served. That was a bit of a disappointment. After the long day of cold Bud Lights we needed to eat again so we headed over to the kitchen which had a short order window. All items on the menu were frozen and fried upon ordering. The chicken strips and fries were still pretty good though, but we had been drinking for a while, so who knows if they were really all that good. All in all if I am ever in Silsbee again I'd happily stop by "The Tonk" for some cold ones.
