Then go back to the back of the restaurant to get the tacos I ordered. I usually don't complain, but the experience was frustrating. I was also surprised by the total: $2.99 for a single bean and cheese taco with no specials or deals. It was the most expensive bean and cheese taco I've ever bought, especially at 8am. Unfortunately, the quality didn't match the price. It was the worst bean and cheese taco I've ever had -- it tasted awful. I'm not sure if it was just an off day, but none of the 4 bean and cheese tacos got eaten. We ended up throwing them away. That's the first time I've ever not finished a single taco from a restaurant.

What a pleasant roadside surprise we experienced at Route 35 Diner…read more On the way to a South Texas Ranch, a group of 7 of us met here to have lunch one Saturday morning. It's very easy to miss while traveling down IH-35 S, because by the time you see the sign "diner", you have passed it by. Although all 7 of us have been right by this place many times over the years, this was a first time experience for the group. In fact, we all failed to realize the diner was even here, as it is also overshadowed by the adjacent service station. The consensus was this was quite the unexpected surprise and each person gave a huge thumbs up for their own meal choice. Personally, I went with the poblano chicken and it was the best I've ever had, which is saying a lot. I believe I ordered this same dish dozens of times in a 60 mile radius and what set it apart was the tasty creamy sauce on top of a very flavorful chicken. The chicken was prepared differently and not the usual stringy stands of breast meat used in other local taquerias. The other dishes from the group were street tacos, shrimp quesadillas, fajitas and even a few with breakfast entrees. We all agreed this place is now on our radar and we are all coming back. A few of the waitstaff did not speak English, which was OK, because a few in our group grew up in Mexico, so the transition was easy. It also gave that authentic feeling that we are in the right place. But please don't let the language gap discourage you because the other helpers spoke English well enough for even the gringos in our group got what they wanted. So owners of this restaurant keep doing what you are doing and if you want to be busting from the seams with business, stick a huge sign in a strategic place and be prepared for more great reviews.

My kid had chicken tenders (which were suppose to come with fries but came with Mac and cheese) and his dad has the threesome which is the wings, catfish and Hennessy shrimp. First, the place is very unassuming, looks like any other roadside diner. There were not many people there when I arrived, so the service was attentive and FAST! I ordered a burger because that was what many of the reviewers recommended, but they did have a daily meatloaf special, which sounded great...but I came for a burger. I ordered the Fried Mushroom Burger which came with Swiss cheese and all the toppings. When my plate was delivered (again...VERY fast), I like to start with the fries as they are at their hottest. These fries were fresh, not frozen, giving them a sense of "made at home"...and they came with a garlic Parmesan seasoning that kicked them up a notch. The burger was the star of the show with out a doubt. It was BIG and so incredibly juicy and flavorful. The nurse was cooked perfectly with just a little warm pink and had a nice crust, the fried mushrooms on top were a really nice compliment to the burger and really added to the overall flavor profile. Very enjoyable burger and fries...I will most certainly be back...going off the beaten path was SO worth it!!! Highly recommend if you're in this area!!!
