Being an enormous fan of Roy's Cheesesteaks, I was excited to hear that Roy had entered the food…read moretruck game. This would reduce my commute to Roy's out in Smyrna and put them within five minutes of my office every Thursday. So yesterday, I headed over to Street Food Thursday and got in line. The first thing I noticed about Roy's was that the customer queue was longer than that of all of the competing food trucks. I thought to myself, "This is a good sign - they're already popular." This turned out to be an illusion of sorts. After hopping in line, I came to realization that the reason for the long line wasn't that more customers were being served, but rather that the line was slow moving. I watched as others walked up to other surrounding trucks and walked away with their food in minutes flat. I thought to myself again, "Well the only reason the line is slow moving is because they cook to order." Fresh food is good food, right? Wrong. When I unwrapped the sandwich, I realized it was completely tepid. I took a bite. My teeth took temporary pause at completely unmelted cheese (see photo). This unmelted cheese gave way (with much resistance) to some of the most flavorless steak I've ever had. Completely unseasoned. While the bread and onions were quite good, the sandwich was an utter disappointment. Was this the result of a cheesesteak never being able to live up to my heady expectations? I unwrapped my second one (yes, I got two). It was just as bad as the first. Roy, if you're reading this, get some quality control on your truck. There's really no excuse for unseasoned meat and completely unmelted cheese.

Food - My two go-to's at Firehouse are the Steamer and the Turkey Bacon Ranch, which on my last visit I went with the latter and of course had no regrets! Another thing I enjoy about Firehouse is they carry Miss Vickie's chips, which are an absolute fav and perfect side for a good sub! Service - As mentioned above, it wasn't bad...just kind of non-existent. Upon arrival, there was just one other party in the place, already seated and eating, so I was the only one ordering. There were two folks behind the counter, neither acknowledged me when I arrived. Once I walked over to the register to order, one came over and asked what I wanted...and that was the extent of the service received. Normally I get a repeat of my order and a general pleasantry at some point in the transaction or a farewell when leaving, but not on this night. It isn't a big deal, but it was just a different experience than I am used to getting at other Firehouse locations. Overall, this Firehouse is a solid stop in spot at a fairly good location in the heart of Marietta not too far from the square or the hospital. While the service I received was off brand, it wasn't bad enough for me avoid this location in the future.

Since they were parked in a gas station parking lot, and didn't have any soda offerings that I liked, I popped into the station and grabbed my favorite. By the time I'd paid my burger was ready. It was fresh and hot (so hot that I had to wait a bit so I could hold it to eat, LOL). The bun evidenced toasting and was nice and soft and large enough to sandwich the large patties with excellent crusting. Their special smash sauce is like a creamy Italian dressing and there was lots of it, giving it a tang. The lettuce was shredded, making it a bit messy, especially with so much sauce so be sure and avail yourself of the roll of paper towels they provide (however, not available on my visit on the next day). Also the pickles they use have a distinct clove taste, so I wasn't a fan of the flavor combination. On my second visit I got the same burger with just cheese and found it much more enjoyable. Even when scaled down it's still a generously sized burger. Across my visits I had both the fries and tots as a side. Both were very generous portions and nicely crispy and also served piping hot. Of the two the fries were my favorite. They were coated and had a nice seasoning. If I were at a festival where food trucks were the only option, I'd definitely favor this option as the food was pretty good, the portions generous, and it's fairly priced.
