Giving Philip and his colleague Jeff 5 stars. I kept tripping circuit breakers with my Portable Oil heaters. Philip called right away to scope problem, and Jeff came next a.m. Quickly scoped the electric pull 1200 V for heater on the 15 amp circuit was too much (80% is in trip zone), and we upgraded 3 outlets to 20 amp. They are now working great. He was quick, gave me all of the information, and was very professional, and cleaned up all of the areas to leave it seamless. I've had other handymen who are too 'familiar' or 'condescending', with me as a homeowner, not at all the case with Philips. He even lent a tool to help finish my kitty door. Would hire again. I've used Philips Electric twice and have been very happy with the quality of their work on both occasions. The first job was last year, where they replaced a couple of pendant lights over the kitchen peninsula, and the second job was a few days ago, where I had them replace a circuit breaker that was faulty and tripping intermittently. Because things always go wonky on weekend nights, my appliance fried an outlet (sparks and all) at 7:30pm on a Sunday, and a breaker wouldn't reset. I took 5 minutes to panic, then set out to find someone (who wouldn't mind coming into the city) to come out on Monday to fix it (sparks made me think sooner was better than later). Sent out a few quote requests at 8pm Sunday night and Philip responded 10 minutes later (!!!) to say he might have availability Monday. Philip kept up steady communication throughout Monday morning to give me ETA on his crew. His guys came in even earlier than anticipated, were courteous and professional, answered all my idle-curiosity questions (of the 'what's that thingamajig?' variety), and were out within an hour, taking the trash with them (!). Granted, the situation wasn't as terribly dire as I thought (other than the trauma of 'Sparks! Dead electric things!'), but I appreciated the calm confidence of the crew: they knew what they were doing, they put me at ease, and they explained things as they went along, so I knew what was being done and why. I highly recommend Philips Electric! I needed an electrician to install a smart thermostat and repair a couple of light fixtures. I checked out local electricians on Yelp. I had never needed an electrician before. Philips had all five star reviews. I called and left a message. They got back to me almost immediately. I was able to schedule an appointment in under two weeks. On the day of the job, the electrician arrived about 45 minutes early. It had snowed the night before. So when he came into my home, he put on covers for his work boots so that he would not track snow, water and salt into the house. He reviewed the documentation for the thermostat and was able to install the unit very quickly. He tested it to make sure that it worked and then he showed me how the unit worked - and how to change the batteries. I then showed him the problems that I had been having with my kitchen light fixture and the dining room light as well. These lights had been working (or really not working) intermittently for the past few years. He diagnosed the problems - one was a broken dimmer switch - the other was a problem with the light socket. He explained each repair so I knew what the problem was and how he planned to fix it. He got the job done quickly and efficiently. He cleaned up when he was done (I had offered to vacuum, but he insisted on doing it). He was polite, professional, and really awesome. I have some additional electrical projects that I want to get done outside when the weather gets warmer. I will definitely call Philips Electric. They are deserving of a five star review. read more

I called Philip for the first time after experiencing regular false alarms with the smokes in my home since 2016. He picked up my call and took the time for me to explain what was happening. The next day Jeff arrived at my house to install new smokes. All was fine for 3 weeks then another false alarm occurred and the fire dept was called. Conclusion reached was that my basement smokes were going off consistently the same day as my weekly automatic generator test ran. I called Philip again and Jeff arrived the next day to adjust the basement smokes as the fire dept suggested. After another job was finished early, he found time to get me in today. Jeff came in and discussed the work to do, made recommendations I hadn't considered for an improved or less expensive result. I had called another company to rewire most of a vacant apartment, but was surprised by their high estimate. They couldn't do it for a few weeks so I asked if the quote would change if I had to move in in the meantime. When they said no, I knew they were bidding based on some standard estimating book and not on real time and materials. I did not attempt to comparison shop on the pricing ($240 for the first hour, $180 for each additional hour, covering two people working together: Philip and a younger assistant who seemed similarly skilled). There was clearly attention to doing the work in a way that caused the least possible damage to existing drywall and cabinetry. Also attention to cleaning up any mess that was created. read more
