This is the first time I've reviewed anything on Yelp. I felt compelled to do so for Phil. Can't thank him enough for his electrical services the other day. A friend gave me a large Casablanca ceiling fan in perfect working order, though I soon discovered it lacked a base unit to attach it to the ceiling. I needed to have the fan installed asap. The job required new wiring from the circuit breaker. So I called three other electricians rated highly on Yelp. One never called me back. One called back two days later. And one gave me a quote of $350-$400 dollars. Phil answered his phone (917-519-2306) right away. He said he'd be over in two hours, and was true to his word. He and Carlvern inspected the job, hustled over to Home Depot for the requisite parts, then came back and finished the job within a couple hours. I paid less than half what the other electrician quoted, including parts. The fan had a two-foot long extension pole. When he installed it, Phil said the thought the fan would work better and be safer with a shorter pole. So he returned with the shorter pole, and installed it the next day, free of charge. Over and above what I've ever experienced with an electrician. I'm giving him five stars only because there isn't a ten rating. He's honest, hard working, quick, and a damn fine electrician. read more

Phil is great. His pricing is extremely fair, he is very courteous, and he knows his stuff. Phil will go to great lengths to make his customers happy. His attention to detail is a rare and fantastic trait. He got a number of electrical jobs done very well in our apartment -- several pendant light installations (which required breaking through the ceilings/walls); rewiring/installation of an outdoor light; installation of an outdoor outlet; re-routing of switchers and dimmer installation. To make all of this happen, Phil came to our place multiple times. Sometimes, he brought along his son Phil-Andrew, who was also very courteous and helpful. All in all, I would highly recommend Phil and use his services again any time. read more

Phil Stewart and his two adult nephews, Carlos and Carlvern Stewart (who have their own review on Yelp for a variety of Home Services) make one of the greatest teams of workers I've ever dealt with. Not only did these guys show up (unlike some other "professionals" I called) but Phil gave me an estimate before the work started that he stuck to. While the guys were working, Phil asked me if I approved of every individual fixture placement before moving on to the next. He also installed wires for ceiling fans in case I ever wanted them in the future. I needed 10 fixtures to be installed in places that had never had lighting or wiring before. This took three visits, but keep reading to find out why. During the first visit, the three together installed six recessed lights in my living room, a hanging pendant in my entryway, one closet light, and two new switches. During the second visit, Phil and Carlvern installed a mini-chandelier with medallion in my bedroom and another closet light, while Carlos beautifully installed my kitchen backsplash tile - the small, round, glass kind! The tiling wasn't planned at all, or they would have finished in two days. The third day involved the "clean-up" - that is, they came back over soon after the second visit to repaint, change the handles on my refrigerator doors to make it open the other way, touch up some of my own bad painting, and install new outlet plates everywhere (even on outlets they didn't originally touch to hide my shabby painting job). None of this was planned on or discussed in the estimate - they were just being nice! And although three days for this might seem like a lot, it's because they take their time to do a very professional job and it shows. Phil's price of $1200 included all the wiring, new switches, other gadgets only an electrician would know about, and labour. I only had to provide the fixtures, any dimmers I wanted, and paint that matched the paint I already had on my walls and ceiling. When the guys were done, my place almost looked like they'd never been there...aside from the new lights and tile, of course. They beautifully patched up any holes they made and painted over them so it looked like nothing was done to my walls. During each visit, they covered my furniture, clothes, and floor with drop cloths before they started and cleaned up anything else when they finished. They even took out all the trash including the boxes and packaging my lights and tile came with. I would definitely hire these guys again and would comfortably recommend each one to anyone who asked. They came to me as a recommendation in the first place! They're centered in Brooklyn but they service Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. The bigger the job, the farther they will travel. (If you're unsure of the size of your job, they considered all the lighting I had installed small.) Phil is fantastic. I called him in a bind at 5pm on a Sunday and he was at my door by 7pm. I thought I could install some dimmers on my own but encountered some strange wiring. He rewired my light switches and taught me how to install dimmers in the process. His rates were totally reasonable and fair. He went out of his way to make sure the job was done right. I called Phil after reading good reviews about him on yelp. He has done a couple of projects for me; so far I am very happy. Here is a brief summary of my experience. 1. His charge is reasonable. He would provide quote before the work. No tricks, no gimmicks. 2. His work was good and honest. My bathroom heater was flaky. He showed me what caused the problem and how to do a quick fix myself. We contacted Phil to help us with the electrical renovation of a our new home after getting several estimates his rates were very reasonable. Phil installed 19 recessed lights, moved fixtures around, put in lights where there weren't any, and much more. He's honest, gets the job done and feels a high level of responsibility for his work. We've been working with Phil over the course of 6 months and have not been disappointed. Aaand he knows a great network of people! Phil recommended a wonderful plumber, Erwin Gale, and awesome carpenters/ handymen Carlos and Carlyle- with this group you can get any job done. i rarely if ever review things on yelp. but i was so disappointed by phil stewart, especially after such glowing reviews on yelp, that i had to share my experience. i was disappointed with nearly every aspect of our interaction. he said he could do things that then when the time came he said he actually couldn't do (like put in an electrical outlet), he gave a "free" consultation, but it's not free if you take off work like i did only to have him be nearly 1 hour late and it's not a consultation if he doesn't even take a close enough look at the fixture you want to replace to realize that it was "unusual" and would require 3 trips to lowes to find something that would work or make any suggestions on ways i could remedy the problems i was having (like changing the switch so it wasn't a dimmer and therefore wouldn't buzz) or if he says he can do something (so you hire him) and then later realizes he can't. he was consistently an hour late to every appointment we made (approx 5 appointments total) and cancelled one well after the time he was suppose to be at my apt. the tardiness wouldn't bother me, but the hours i missed of work in order to meet him cost more than i paid him!! and he repeatedly told me things that weren't true in order to save himself time and energy (i.e. look it's not flickering... hour later after he leaves: light starts flickering!). i'm sure he knows how to do a good job, but for whatever reason (personal issues, overbooking, laziness, misogyny, who knows...) he completely failed me and not only would i not recommend him, i would strongly recommend you not hire him or if you do make it very clear that he will not be paid if he does a crappy job (i say this b/c he demanded that i pay him the full amount even though he didn't finish the job and assumed i would trust him to return to finish, which for a single woman living alone is very uncomfortable). read more

I waited for Phil for one hour (at least he had the courtesy to text and say he was running late which is more than I've gotten from other guys) but then didn't ring the doorbell when he got to my house. He called and sent a text (I was on the phone at the time) and then he left. Without ringing the bell of my house for which he had the address. And then was cranky on the phone about it as he drove away. Totally unprofessional. read more

I too rarely write yelp reviews, however, I felt I needed to based on the excellent service Phil and his nephews provided us with. Phil was professional, prompt, and very knowledgable and was able to fix an electrical problem that a few others have not been able to attempt. He was very friendly and enjoyable to be around and got the entire job done (fixed an outlet, ran to Home Depot, put in AC unit, installed 2 light fixtures) in under 2 hours. I called Phil after having 2 successive electricians do work in my apartment. In both cases they cut corners and didn't finish what I wanted - even saying it was impossible. On the phone, Phil knew exactly what the problem was and he knew he could fix it correctly. He came, quoted me a decent price and then he did it exactly as he said. I gave him some money anyway for his superior service and honesty. Then he gave me a referral I intend to follow up on for some other unrelated work I want done. Scheduling wasn't easy. There were 2 missed appointments before the job was done. Not much attention to detail (he installed an off white switch with a white face plate). What you gain in savings is lost on detailed finishing. read more
