Disappointed! My wife and i were driving north on I-95 and were getting low on gas. We pulled off a random exit near Petersburg, VA and refueled. We decided to find a local place to eat since we had already stopped. We yelped and googled food, restaurants and eateries and came up with this place. We read the reviews and they were only just ok... so we were skeptical about eating here. Should have followed my gut instincts because the parking lot was empty (sign #1). After we pulled up, two other couples and a truck driver pulled up. I felt a little better. I ordered the sliced brisket and a few minutes later... I was told they didn't have any more (sign #2). The waitress acted that she didn't like having to work on Labor day (sign#3) but she might have been going through something personally that day. $40 dollars later... I ordered the BBQ chicken, jalapeño poppers, hot wings. My wife ordered a house salad. Salad was wilted and old. It was sent back and the exact same thing came back a second time. (Note to self... don't order salad from a BBQ place). Poppers were ok... fried, greasy, hot and totally what we expected. Hot wings were fried yesterday, then re-fried today but burnt. But that BBQ chicken platter though... tasted like it was cooked yesterday and microwaved. If it were Saturday at 11am. The food could have been great... but Saturday food served on Monday just doesn't work. Any ratings above 3 stars must be related to the owners. We met 5 other total strangers who were also there for the first time and they got the same vibe... bland, blah and a waste of time, money and effort. I dont usually rate this low.... Service was wonderful. Really friendly people behind the counter and waitress. There is a big expensive looking smoker in front of building but it was not fired up. I appreciate the taste and tenderness of smoked beef and pork. We ordered a BBQ sampler which included chicken, ribs, BBQ, and beef brisket. The brisket was disappointing. It had sear marks like it was reheated on a flat grill. It was dry and did not pass the pull test. Ribs were decent, Chicken was dry, minced pork was good. Finally decided to follow the signs off of I95 for this place. Not quite a mile off the interstate. Easy to follow signage. Tiny parking lot. Definitely a divey looking spot. Pleasantly surprised though. Smells amazing as soon as you walk in. Very small seating area. Order at the counter to carryout. Tried the sliced BBQ beef (brisket) sandwich. Very tasty. Good smoke flavor. Sliced a bit too thick so some of the pieces were a bit tough to bite through. Served smokin' hot on a standard soft bun. Sauce on the side. The house sauce was good. Not too peppery or tomatoey. A bit on the thin side so things could get messy...but that's what napkins are for. Got minced pork BBQ platters. Meat was dry but that could be because it was near closing time. Excellent sides. I'd try again but get different main dish or just get sides. Delicious collard greens. Flavored right. Very good potato salad (potatoes fully cooked which is huge) and quite possibly the best hush puppies ever. Mac and cheese was ok and slaw had good flavor but was big. Tried two desserts. Banana pudding was ok. I think it was made with banana pudding instead of vanilla which made it somewhat strong. Carrot cake was excellent. I would recommend this place as a stop on a road trip to any family looking to avoid fast food. Cornbread deserves 4 stars, BBQ sauce is 3 stars, sweet potato tots were 4 stars, and coleslaw was 3 stars. The fries only deserve 1 star, if that much. This is another of the rare places I ate twice at while in the Ft. Lee area, first night I had the pulled pork and it was delicious! Great smoked flavor, their take on BBQ sauce was very good, different from the sauces I'm used to but good. I went back a second night because I seen that Wednesday was all you can eat rib night, I love me some ribs! Alas, they are the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. They used spare ribs instead of baby back - which is a plus, but they were cooked much too long, the first round portion was more than generous but I just couldn't get past the soggy overcooked texture of the meat. Great BBQ joint. Very small, out of the way, blink and you'll miss it, but worth the search and the detour off of 95. The place is tiny, with maybe 6 tables, but seems clean enough. Lots of Elvis stuff on display which adds to the charm. From the moment you step in the place, you know you've discovered something special. It's like going back in time 40 years. I tried the ribs with a side of collards and some mac and cheese, and a little cornbread. My son had the pulled pork sandwich with fries. All was spot on. The ribs where like they should be, spicy, smokey and good and wet with sauce. The service was good, the restroom clean and the menu and specials seemed interesting. When we first started eating there a few years back it was mostly pretty good so we still go there every now and again since my husband loves BBQ but the last 3 or 4 times we've gone, something has not been right. Shredded pork has been a little dry, I don't even bother with the Mac and cheese anymore and today we were sold 3 day (according to the date on the container) old cake. Not good, too hard. I am a baker so I know that at 3 days, cake should be sold at half price or not at all. Might have to stop going there. read more

Sunday's lunch on Jeff Davis with pleasant surprise at PG1. Don't let the area and building scare you away!! The menu was comprehensive for a BBQ restaurant and reasonable. I had the sliced pork with Mac and cheese and butter beans. My partner has sliced pork with potato salad and collards. There was more pork than I could eat at this sitting with ample sides. The hushpuppies were very good and all the meal was served very quickly. Of all the BBQ restaurants on southside - this is my first choice. My favorite place to get bbq in the area. Meat is always tender and juicy. I love the smoky flavor from the meats. That is always consistent which is a must for bbq in my opinion. I wish it was closer to me as this would be a regular spot for me. read more

Just went there today to pick up some dinner and I got a 1/2 rack ribs with two sides. First thing I'm going to say that the lady that took my order either had a long day but she really didn't show the best customer service second their were ants at the table I tried to sit down at and I got up quickly and I told the lady that took my order and did she do anything ummm no she ignored it. Secondly I went to check my food after I got it and they didn't put my sides in. So at this point I was livid. And on top of that their food wasn't the best they charge to much for ribs. read more

Every time I drive home south I have that one, first meal that makes me feel like I haven't really eaten anything in a year. The collard greens were so good I wanted to cry. There's a depth to this food that says it's been cooking a long, long time. The highlight, in addition to the greens, was the beef brisket (sliced) which tasted like smoke and wood and the little bits melted in my mouth. The ribs, also, were so generous and melty good. And the fried pickles were excellent--only southerners know how to do fried pickles right. I love a vinegar sauce so this place was perfect for me. Food was below average. Sliced pork was dry with no flavor, Cut too thin. The only thing that was good were the hush puppies and the mac n cheese. The reason for the lack of starts was the horrible service. I have never in my life been treated so rudely. From the phone call order to picking up, I was talked down to, fussed at and treated like they were doing me a favor. There was a confusion with the pulled bque and the minced bque. When questioned I was berated that I should of known the difference and told that the Chef would be angry with me for the issue!!! I will never go there again. They do not believe in customer service and that part of their job is to help the customer. I am not there child to be chastised because of the confusion. I usually get bque from the west end and wanted to try them out because they are local. Will not make that mistake again. read more

Embarrassment to BBQ!! I would have given 0 stars if there was an option. I visited on a Friday around 6:00. Walked in and the restaurant was empty. I should have turned around and left. Sat down and was greeted by a friendly waitress. I ordered the sliced pork platter with mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. The food came out promptly but it was on a Styrofoam plate and all the utensils were all plastic. The pork was nasty, dry and tasteless. I didn't taste any hickory or smoke flavor at all. It didn't seem there was any rub or seasoning at all on the pork. The mashed potatoes tasted like instant TV dinner potatoes. Same as the gravy it was dark and tasted like it came out of a can. The mac and cheese was gross and tasted like unseasoned plastic. I'm not sure if the "chef" knows what salt and pepper is but he didn't use any on the food I ate. When I went to pay I could see the kitchen from the register and saw a huge microwave in the back. I assume the "chef" uses it to warm up precooked food. I thanked the waitress and tipped her $3.00 on a $15.00 meal. The staff was good the food was not. read more

I've been here about a dozen times now. I pass it on my way out of work and it is excellent. Staff is super friendly, meal comes out quick. Never had anything I didn't enjoy. I highly recommend. This was our first time visiting here. It is a very tiny place, about five booths and a few small tables, so not a place to bring a group of more than four people. They do have some outdoor seating outside. It appeared to be a very clean place. When we got there we were the only two there besides the waitress. She was quick to bring our drinks. We both got the sweet tea, which was very good. My husband ordered the large size minced BBQ and he got fries with it. It was huge and the portion of fries was, too. I got the BBQ sandwich meal and it was the Regular size sandwich, which was still big enough, both came with a side of slaw. I had as my side the Mac and Cheese. It was good, but I can not swear it was homemade. It kind of reminded me of the Bob Evans type you cook in a microwave, but it was still pretty good. The BBQ had a nice smokey taste to it, they have their own PG Sauce in a bottle on the table, but go light on it unless you like a lot of vinegar. I added way too much to my sandwich. For the price..... We got it all for less than $20, it was a nice lunch and it is nice to have a local business in the area instead of another chain restaurant. Business did pick up as we were leaving and they seem to do a lot of take out. I would say give it try and see for yourself. read more
