I moved to the area a few months ago and Petty johns seems to be a great establishment. The employees are super friendly,quirky, and entertaining. Some may say the selection is on the smaller side, but they always have what I'm looking for. I love that they know their regular customers by name. Clerk was extremely rude. When asked for ID, I promptly gave the clerk my ID, after bending and looking at the ID for several moments,and telling me he didn't trust the ID, the clerk threatened to call the Boulder police, which I gladly welcomed (as the ID is a valid state issued drivers licenese) The clerk then proceeded to tell me "I passed his test" and quickly swipped my credit card that I was showing as another card with my name, when I intended to pay with cash...so not only was I threatened, my transaction was improperly processed and had to be refunded....wow..just..wow...can a place be more unwelcoming/incompetent... Do not recommend this store, poor selection, worse customer service. Won't return, and will recommend others not to use this store. As other comments indicate, if you want to be harassed and enjoy the slim-selection, maybe this is a place for you, otherwise..go elsewhere! read more

We try to support this store as it's in our neighborhood, but there is a staff member that is so blatantly rude that we go out of our way to find other options. He wears a beanie, looks like he rolled out from under a bridge, makes fun of people's accents, and is incapable of being friendly. In the back corner, past the spirits and wine racks, there is a row of quietly frosted over refrigerators full of beers. These beers do not match row to row, some of them in bottles, cans, others packed into damp boxes. Taped onto the front of these coolers are wrinkled sheets of paper listing all the beers that can be found within. Some of the names on this list are highlighted - last year's Christmas special beer, crappy Lost Lakes, a pumpkin flavored ale from a previous season. It is amongst these discounted oddballs that you might find your new favorite beer in the form of 2012's New Year's Jubilation Stout, maybe even in the middle of a warm spring. I am not a huge consumer of alcohol, so you should take my opinion when it comes to liquor stores with a grain of salt. I rarely seek out anything that is difficult to find or terribly expensive, so as long as the place is clean, it generally serves its purpose for me just fine. I do like Pettyjohns, though. They have always had what I was looking for, and seemed pretty knowledgeable the one time I asked for advice on a wine. The guys are really personable as well too (during my last visit, the cashier and I commiserated over our grueling finals schedules.) Where to start with the negative aspects about Petty John's? First, their prices are ridiculously inflated. I understand that they are a smaller local store, but I can buy the same product just about anywhere for at least 20% less. The "sales", especially on beer is usually on stuff that doesn't move off the shelf. I'm willing to pay more at a local place, provided they give quality service. But... The bigger problem at this store is the abysmal customer service. Being a regular for years, coming in sometimes 3x per week to pick something up, they never even make an effort to acknowledge or learn a name, or remember whether a customer is in their nominal frequent shopper program. It's always the same "are you in the points?" Never, "you are in the points right?" - a very low level effort to acknowledge a regular even if they don't know everyone's name. I'm always friendly when I come in, and ask how they're doing, etc. And I'm giving you my name every times I buy something. But by and large they are just plain rude. On several occasions, I have picked something from the shelf, where they have prices below items and the price at the register doesn't match the shelf. Never once have they offered to honor the shelf price. It's always somehow the customer's fault. The latest instance of this was where every product from a brewery was listed at the same price, yet the product rang up at much higher price. Nowhere was there a tag on the shelf indicating that any of that brewery's products were priced higher. I understand that sometimes limited release products cost more, but put the price on the shelf so you don't get the surprise at the register. Still - no acknowledgement that this was an error or oversight on their part. If this was an isolated incident, I'd just brush it off - but over the past 6 years this has happened quite a few times, with no effort to make it right. So note to PJ's absentee owners, hire people who care about customer service - this is 2018 and that's the biggest way to maintain loyalty, not by giving $10 back on every $150 purchased. The only reason this place is still surviving is because they have no local competition in the Table Mesa area. read more

I love this spot. Its a "locals" liquor store. The middle-school-paper-writer who got all huffy about her hustand being carded and gave them a 1-star was probably witnessing people being checked out who are there atleast once a week. Duh. Anyway, great wine selection and prices. I usually buy 4 bottles at around the 12$ mark and a box of austalian wine for cooking for $60, for a little perspective. read more

Terrible service. I've been to this liquor store twice while i was in Colorado. The first time i came here, i showed the cashier two ids (one state issued id & a government issued id) and they declined both. After refusing my ids, the cashier started to blurt out smart comments so i left. Later on that day, my uncle and I brought two cases of beer to the counter and one of the cashiers became belligerent instantly. I'm not from Colorado but whenever i visit my uncle in the future, i will never come back to this place. read more

I can't believe I have the first review here, because this place has been busy every time I've been in so far. Either way, this place is great for for getting your expensive fancy beer drink on. They have a lot of the mircobrews Boulder has to offer, most in sampler packs, as well as your Coors Lights and a nice variety of wine. read more

I can never seem to put my finger on it, but I love this place. The prices are lower than almost any where else in town and there is a surprisingly great selection, especially in beer. I have been in a few times when they are sampling wines, and ended up buying a few even though I was looking for something else do to their excellent choices. This has been my neighborhood liquor store for years. Although not a large store, their selection of wine is great and the prices are very reasonable. They also have free wine tastings on Fridays with interesting selections. Charlie does a nice job explaining the wines and is quite knowledgeable about wine and I've learned quite a bit from him about what to look for when drinking wine. read more

I've been going to Pettyjohn's for over 2 years now, and I love them. All of the employees actually know and care about the locals who come in. Great selection and decent prices. Sure, there are slightly cheaper places in Boulder, but why not support a local business with people who want to know about your day, or even come visit you at work because, again, they're about community. Plus the dog policy is amazing, bring your pup to meet London, the cutest Golden ever! Also, ask about the rewards program, it pays off in spades. read more

i'm surprised to see negative reviews here. I've been stopping here since I moved from Japan a year ago. The staff seems very knowledgeable to me, and have given excellent recommendations. One case in point: I needed a good Bordaeaux for cooking purposes. The clerk found me some mini-bottles so as to prevent waste. The stew came out great, and I had no trouble carrying the little six-pack home. More important to me: today I stopped by there and found that they were stocking a "REAL" Japanese sake for a very reasonable price. They told me a Japanese customer had advised them. I've looked in almost every liquor store in Boulder for a "real" and reasonably priced sake. Seeing that the distributor was in Oregon, I felt hopeful & decided to take a chance. I hesitantly opened it tonight and took a sip. Yea!! It was just like being home in Kyoto!! The good news: you don't have to pay $40 for "maa-maa" (so-so) sake any more! This is Sakemoto, in a very unassuming bottle, but it's pleasantly dry and the real thing. Thanks, Pettyjohn's! This will ease my culture shock! read more

Pettyjohns is awesome!! This place is special because of the wine selection, Friday wine tastings, uber-dog-friendliness, and the extremely helpful and knowledgeable staff. The wine selection is really quite impressive. They don't have as many wines as some other places, but they absolutely excel in offering really good, reasonably priced wines. Friday wine tastings have become something of a tradition for my husband and I (... and our dog). Charlie does an awesome job presenting the wines, and I usually learn something new. I don't think I have ever been in a more dog-friendly establishment. I honestly think my dog is even more excited about the liquor store than I am. The staff is generally awesome, too. We have really appreciated the spot-on recommendations for which wines to take home! In shopping at Pettyjohns, you will take away both the warm and fuzzy neighborhood-community-South Boulder feeling, and, likely enough, a damn good bottle of vino. read more

I went in today and got the best customer service I have ever received in a liquor store. The pregnant woman who helped me suggested a couple of wines that were wonderful with my dinner this evening. I was surprised because she is very pregnant but she defiantly knew what she was talking about.
