I have a spoiled dog. She didn't come to me that way; I created that all on my own, 1 ice cream, 2 toys, and 3 treats at a time. I take her with me to as many places as I can. One of those places is the Whitehall Petsmart.
My girl LOVES people more than anything in the world, and I knew the moment I brought her home, she was meant to be a therapy dog. However, in her enthusiastic love for everyone, she didn't know how to greet them without the exuberance of a tornado. I knew we *both* needed a good trainer. I took a chance on enrolling her in this Petsmart's beginning obedience class and met Darren--the person who quickly became my dog's new best friend. His love of dogs was evident immediately. His approach to training not only focuses on positive reinforcement of the dog's behavior, but the human's as well. The dog and owner really become a team under his guidance. Though I've had dogs all my life and have experience with three other trainers, I found myself gaining new understanding and confidence in how I worked with my girl. Darren celebrates both what the dog achieves and what the owner achieves with their handling, and he gently points out ways to improve or modify training and handling if needed. I became so invested in my dog's education, I signed up for the intermediate class. Then the advanced level and finally the Brain Games class. After all of it, I have a well-adjusted greyhound who is proud to show her tricks and good behavior, who I can take anywhere, who is completely ready to become a therapy dog. In training her, I have become a more relaxed dog owner, and she's become a more relaxed dog because she knows what I'm asking from her. We couldn't have gotten to this point without Darren.
All that training came with a lot of trips to this Petsmart. I have interacted with all of the employees and the manager, Sarah, and I have seen their customer service and love of animals in action. These are some of the nicest people I've encountered in any pet store in the Lehigh Valley. They are knowledgeable about their products, ready to give advice when needed, and their smiles are big and genuine. Their excitement to see and interact with pets who come in with their owners is also great to see in action. Regulars, like my girl are often greeted by name from memory, but even the non-regular dogs who come in are called by their names once owners tell them what it is. The people who work there make it a feel-good environment whenever I go. That's not to say that I've never encountered something that I needed help with, but when that has happened, manager Sarah has *immediately* addressed my issue with calmness and professionalism, ready to tackle my needs.
With a dog I treasure so much, I wouldn't recommend or frequent just any place or pet store, let alone give a happy review, unless I felt that my business--and most importantly, my dog--was valued and welcome.
Definitely not all Petsmarts, but this one--A+. read more
