Is there a reason why only TWO employees are working the entire store by themselves? I called before I went to make sure someone could assist me in getting a fish tank and proper set up. Nope. The man at the register called for help twice but the only other employee was nowhere to be found and when he was able to flag her down she decided to help other customers instead of me. I was able to figure out what I needed on my own and come check out I asked for 2 goldfish--but nobody could get me any because they had lines half way through the store to checkout. Then the cashier, as friendly and apologetic as he was insisted I buy a different tank. The box was opened but he insisted everything was there and intact. I left with everything EXCEPT two fish. I get home to prepare the tank, the filter is missing most of the pieces! So much for them checking to make sure it was complete and that they still charged me full price for the item. Returning the tank for the one I originally wanted and most likely will not be purchasing my future fish from them after this experience. read more

The selection is the same as any major chain store but to the reviewers who have come before me the secret of the day is that the equestrian tack supply stuff will go on clearance sale on April 3rd and be gone by July. Apparently, it doesn't sell well. I've often had a hard time getting assistance but once I do get it I usually get great service. Their fish tanks have snails but that is a major risk at most any commercial fish store. read more

I took my 2yr old Golden/Chow mix for a summer hair cut for the 1st time at PetSmart San Mateo. The Groomer was Jonah and he was wonderful. He was right on time. He showed me the different lengths on summer cuts he could do for Taffy after we talked I choose a length. When I picked up Taffy Jonah told me he went with a different razor length as Taffy's fur was showing razor marks and he wanted a smoother look. Taffy looked amazing. I also received a Pawgress report card which let me know how Taffy did during the appointment (I have never received any feedback like this at the other groomer that Taffy has gone to), this was very helpful as Taffy can be very anxious. The parking was wonderful- nice large lot. The only problem I came across was that I asked them to call my cell phone (as I was doing errands) not the home phone they had on file. When I got home with Taffy I realized they called my home phone 1st and then 15mins later called my cell phone. read more

This review is for the vets and the general store, not the groomers. I don't know the groomers at this store. I go elsewhere for grooming. I like the store. It is spacious and they have great variety. The prices are reasonable and the staff is helpful in locating the items you need. The vets are very nice and they have been entirely reliable and seem to have excellent expertise. Just goes to show that these big shops can hire some good experts. We'll continue to use the vet service at this Petsmart. And I am entirely confident in suggesting that you do too. read more

I took my dog there for a bath that including teeth cleaning, nail filing, perfume and the works. Her appointment was at 12:00 and once we got there, I requested shedding shampoo. I left my dog with them and 2.5 hours later they called to say she was ready. I've bathed my dog plenty of times and 30 minutes including drying is what it takes. So I got my dog, looked her over and noticed immediately that she smelled the same. I asked for the bather, Eric and pointed out her stinkiness. He stated he forgot her perfume and then sprayed it on her. I told him it wasn't the lack of perfume but the lack of cleanliness. He said he washed her and I disagreed. He told me he didn't know what I wanted and I told him a clean dog. He said if it means anything, she was a good dog. Agh! I took my dog up front and asked for the manager. The cashier who called the manager agreed that my dog wasn't cleaned thoroughly. The manager, Hussein, "couldn't smell her" and asked me to check her again. I told him I wasnt satisfied and wasn't going to dish out $36 bucks for a crappy job and to top it off, the bather broke her leash! He offered a redo and I politely declined. I left with a dirty dog and my wallet still intact. I talked to my friend later on who told me she used to work there a few years ago and employees of the grooming department always skip around their job and cheat. She also said some of them were mean to the dogs. DO Not Go There. I will stick with Petfood Express self bath station. read more

I would give NO STARS but I could not post this without giving one star for some reason? I dropped my little 10 pound sweetie off at the grooming salon at 3:00 p.m. and called around 6:30 p.m. to see if she was done. Not until 7:30 p.m. or so they said. When I got a call she was finally done the groomer said "Oh, she had two tangles I had to work on so there will be an additional cost for that ($7.00)! I combed my dog before I brought her in to make sure there were no big tangles. I said whatever, but when I arrived to pick her up I was told there was another $7.00 charge added as she was "antsy"...would not hold still for the groomer. I had suspicions about this groomer when I dropped my dog off...she just didn't seem like she understand what I was telling her about the way I wanted my dog groomed (or, that she even liked dogs to me)! My dog has been groomed countless times (she is 6 years old) and I have never gotten complaints about her being "antsy or nervous"! Anyway, I complained and asked if the manager was there...the grooming manager had gone home, but the manager of the store came in to assist me. While waiting for her, I noticed the hair on my dog's neck was not cut as short as her body hair. I pointed this out to the manager. She went into the back room where the groomer was "hiding"...and asked her if she could shorten the hair on my dog's neck....she refused and never came out the entire time! This was an awful haircut by any stretch of the imagination! I'm sure she would not come out as she knew there would be no tip in this grooming for her! After this happened for a couple of weeks my dog was not acting like herself...kind of scared is all I can say? I know that they have a huge turnover in employees in the grooming salon...I found out why from a disgruntled employee...their pay is VERY low, so young people take the job and learn grooming at PetSmart, then they go to a REAL grooming salon where they can make much more money!! I also found a bump on my dogs back which she has never had before, guess she cut her and I didn't notice it right away? WHAT A DISASTER OF A DAY FOR MY SWEET GIRL AND ME!! Please learn from my mistake, do not take your dog here...he or she may come home a whole different animal with a realllly bad, bad haircut!! read more

Kendra in the grooming salon has clipped our dog Jack's nails twice now. She has done an excellent job both times. I watch the entire time and she is so gentle with him. He is 13 yrs old, with a bad hip, and can be very grumpy at times, especially during a nail clip. In fact, after all the years we've had him, we've never taken him to a salon (we've always done it at home, but he's just too grumpy now for that). So, it was his first groomer visit. But she does it very smoothly and cautiously that it was almost like he didn't mind having it done. I think it helps, too, taking him to Petsmart for this, verses a vet, because he can shop for a toy or treat afterwards. We're moving out-of-state, so we hope that other Petsmarts have someone as good as her. Surely their standards are the same. I also like that Petsmart promotes pet adoptions and not breeding. we shop there at least once a week. its way bigger than the petco in san mateo. people work there are pretty friendly. sometimes the checkout line can be pretty long. read more

its always nice to go to a place where you can bring your dog..the store is in the same complex as Target and a few other stores..it is a big box pet store, so you can expect to pay premium prices but who doesn't if they have animals..petclub is a more economical option but not as pleasing to the eye as petsmart read more
