A cute shop, but definitely pricey. I genuinely like the clothing and think it's beautiful, especially all the gorgeous patterns. The clothes are like a work of art. However, because of this, I can't fathom spending $70 on a strawberry printed rain jacket, for example. Highly trendy, but I personally don't like to overly spend on trends. If your closet is already a rainbow explosion, it might be perfect for you. That being said, when I walked in it was not much of a vintage shop. Over 90% of the clothes were brand new with a few vintage items sprinkled in. Perhaps it was more vintage-oriented when it opened, but it seems to just be a boutique now. I'd definitely visit again if only to see if something particularly catches my eye. read more

Awful experience here. My friend and I visited ~20" before closing, and the lady at the front desk told us they were closing soon, which we understood. As soon as it was 7 o'clock (maybe even a few minutes before), the lady said they were closing and we had to leave and was very rude and forceful about it. We were in the process of trying on jackets and likely would've both spent $100+ had we been given 5 more minutes to contemplate our purchases. In my experience, if you're in a store before they're closed they generally let you finish up what you're doing, but this lady obviously did not want to be there. Very unfortunate as they had a lot of cute pieces but I would never come back based on the customer service or lack thereof. read more

Petrune is a well-stocked vintage clothing store on the Commons, in a new, enlarged space that replaced its previous location around the corner on Cayuga Street. Petrune mostly stocks women's clothes, accessories, and shoes, but it also has a pretty good men's selection as well. Prices are reasonable and there is often a small themed discount section outside the store, featuring something like houndstooth jackets or eighties dresses. The shop is a great addition to the Commons and is worth a visit if you're in Ithaca. update, 2.20.09: Volume Records just opened a location in Petrune, on the upper floor. I haven't been to see it yet, but an employee at Volume said that it contains their vinyls. Sounds like a cool collaboration to me. read more

I wear vintage from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Moving from Buffalo to Ithaca I was hopeful that there was a vintage shop of sorts here, but I'm let down. To be fair I'm comparing this place to the shops in NYC and Buffalo where the vintage market is strong. I don't get that vintage has a big market here, at least for clothing anyways. Anyways this shop is half reproductions that cost a pretty penny and half actual vintage stuff. Their vintage stuff is not super unique or in super good quality and therefore matches the cheap price. What is a plus about this place is that it does have good accessories; shoes, purses and the like. I've never bought anything, haven't found anything to buy really. I haven't sold anything here either so I can't speak to that process. Every time I'm on the commons I do make a trip here. read more

Eh... Okay, so I used to love this place, back in the day when it was an actual vintage shop. These days, it seems like everything they have is quite pricey and the merchandise isn't that great. Plus, now the upstairs is quite empty. They used to have men's merchandise and women's sale items but we headed upstairs to find piles of cardboard boxes and a basket of men's ties; that made me sad. Most recently, I picked up a knee-length wool plaid skirt for under $20 (they had an entire rack of long plaid wool skirts) which admittedly was an excellent deal. However, the rest of the store was stocked with things that didn't really interest me. Also, they have drawers with belts and gloves and hosiery but they are so disorganized. Many of the gloves were in horrible condition (either dirty or mangled or both) and the belts were all tangled up in each other. I feel like I could've found a nice belt but I was so put off by the mess and I didn't have the energy to rifle through the pile. They also have merchandise in the "storage area" that hasn't been priced yet so it isn't for sale but that was really off-putting to me. It was such a tease to see some nice items and not be able to buy them. Maybe the owners see that as a way of giving people an incentive to come back (like, "Ooh, look at what we might have for sale next week,") but since I was only in town for the weekend, I was definitely turned off. And even if I was still in school, I'd be peeved since it's not like I was able to make time to head to the commons all that often while I was still a student. All in all, it's a fun place to peruse but and I'll always come back since it offers me a lot of nostalgia. read more

Petrune is a lovely (and large!) vintage clothing store on the Ithaca Commons. They carry a well-curated range of 20th-century finds for both men and women (see especially their shoes and accessories), with the occasional Victorian piece. Petrune also carries modern interpretations of vintage styles, and I believe they've recently begun manufacturing dresses based on vintage patterns. Definitely worth a look-in if you're passing through the Finger Lakes region. Prices are uber-reasonable. read more

I had to write a review today. I am going on a business trip to Santa Cruz Island and I was told that one of the people I will meet in this remote location used to design clothes for Stevie Nicks. I was a postdoc at Cornell over a decade ago but I managed to hold onto my prized vintage pieces from Petrune. They persisted through my moves to Cambridge, MA, Walla Walla, WA, Palm Desert, CA, Claremont CA and finally to my final landing in Idyllwild, CA. Tonight I found THE DRESS to wear from my Petrune collection. It is so perfect for the setting--the summer, the Channel Islands and my personality. Thank you, Petrune, for being my personal shopper, for calling me when something arrived that would make you think of me. I miss very few things about upstate NY, but you are one of them! read more

I just recently called this location on the phone and the gentleman that just answered the phone was extremely rude for no reason... I greeted him with " Good Afternoon, how are you? I apologize for interrupting your day and I promise I wont take up much of your time, I'm sure your very buy..." He cut me off before I could go any further and replied with" you already have taken up too much of my time"... I then told him to Have a good day and hung up. I was calling there store to offer a huge lot of Name Brand clothing for them to sell with not return in investment for me. I will find another location to donate my expensive goods too. Petrune is definitely on the pricier side, which is both surprising and unsurprising (surprising because a lot of the clothes they sell are just modern pieces based on vintage styles, and unsurprising because... well, it's a vintage/consignment store, duh). At any rate, you can find a ton of great modern 20's and 30's style pieces there. In particular, their coats and party dresses are divine (though way out of my budget!). Also, although it leaves much to be desired, Petrune has a small selection of clothes with thrift store prices. (Last spring, I managed to find a nice wool A-line skirt and a cheap flannel that I wear all the time when it gets cold.) If you have money to spend, or if you're just looking for eye candy, Petrune is worth a visit for sure. read more

I'm a voracious hoarder of vintage clothing. That being said, I love this place! They carry very carefully picked vintage pieces as well as newer designers, sometimes vintage inspired. I was surprised to have purchased a new dress and I even tried on jeans, also new. There wasn't a thing in there I didn't love. Shoes, sunglasses, would've liked to see more handbags but they had a great collection of summery straw bags. Being from NYC, I didn't find their prices terribly high at all. I bought a dress, sunglasses and shoes all for about $75. Sales persons were friendly and helpful as well. I'd definitely return next time I'm in the area. read more

Don't get me wrong- I really like Petrune and their commitment to creating a cohesive collection of vintage (though not 100% vintage) clothing and accessories, but the staff have not been friendly whenever I've stopped by, and especially the most recent time I went in. I just got a bad, unwelcoming vibe as if I shouldn't have been there, like I was on the set of The Devil Wears Prada. read more

A lovely boutique of mostly new and some curated vintage clothes. The new clothes were well made and unique with lots made in America. The prices weren't overwhelming. The vintage selection included great condition clothes and was extremely well-curated. A great small business to support. Let me start this review by saying that I'm one of those rare females who finds (or rather, found) clothes shopping tedious: I see no point in trying endless garments on for the sake of it, and the thought of recreationally shopping fills me with dread. However, even a shop-o-phobe like me found this place exceptionally interesting. Petrune is mainly a vintage shop, peppered with a few carefully selected modern items. The stock was fascinating - there were clothes of every era and style you could imagine - and the prices were very reasonable. Even for purely educational purposes re: fashion, this shop would have great, but the stock was also, being so varied, good for finding unusual gems for all shapes and sizes. When I decided on my items, they also wrapped them up carefully in pretty tissue paper, despite the fact that I'd spent a meagre $70. It's quite possible that, while I still hate shopping generally, I might change my mind a little when Petrune is concerned...! read more

Extremely over priced! I'd rather shop online. I get the same stuff 75% less :) The place is cute but the clothing is not worth the price. I'd pay $200 for a dress but not anything they sell. They sell old vintage style dresses and coats nothing worth their prices. I can go to a thrift store and get vintage style dresses and coats for super cheap. you aren't gonna get your money's worth at this store! read more

Pricey, very much so. In other word's it's the kind of place that sells sweaters for 70 dollars and up, get my drift?. When I was in the store the women who worked there wernt friendly the least bit and never asked where I was trying to go in the store to look for something particular like a mens hat, I had to find it myself which isn't a problem, I was just in a rush to pick up something for a friend I was meeting in 15 min and considering that I had never been in the store before that day, it was annoying to have to search all over myself for the mens section with no help/direction. I do however very much like thier assortment of vintage headphones which are upstairs--the headphones are very hip and the only thing that's affordable (25-60.00) read more

On a recent visit to Ithaca we stopped in at Petrune to look for some last minute Christmas gifts. I didn't find much in the way of presents for others, but I wound up buying a few presents for myself. I found a gorgeous black swing coat with a fur collar , and a vintage Gucci handbag. I loved the mix of vintage clothing and newer styles. I found the prices really reasonable compared to NYC. read more

The men's section isn't big, but there are some pretty sweet deals hiding in there. I got a really nice wool blazer for just 25 dollars. There are tuxedos, ties, shirts and coats that all looked great and we were surprised that nobody mentioned this place to us. This store is beautiful and innovative. The buyers have a great eye for quality, color, and classic designs. The clothes are cool and very reasonably priced and the collection features not just vintage items, but new items as well. Two pieces of clothing my wife gets the most compliments on (a red 3/4 sleeve vintage top and an electric blue wool dress c. 1960s) have come from that store, and whenever we have visitors from out of state we bring them to Petrune to shop. Everyone loves it. I have also found the staff to be friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this store. read more

The thing I like about Petrune is the atmosphere. The music is vintage, of course, but not loud, and they play from a collection of vinyl records they have in the front. There is a great mix of new and used ladies clothing downstairs, and men's clothing upstairs. You can browse as long as you like without sales people pestering you--it does take some time to comb through the racks--but if you do need help, they are friendly without being pushy. The only thing I would ever change is, of course, I would like MORE stuff to look through. On the other hand, the things I do buy there end up being wardrobe staples; the owners have a good eye for quality and style. It's definitely a must-see if you're on the Commons. read more
