The average price for this area is $3.75 to $4.25 per gallon (look it up, do a search for Avg Prices #2 Heating Oil for your town). They obviously are taking advantage of the "short excursion" in the Middle East. to jack up their prices sky high. When the oil tank drops below half, the boiler stops receiving oil--a known issue Petro previously diagnosed as air entering the oil line. On 02/08/2026, during extreme winter weather, we lost heat and hot water again. The technician refused to inspect because the boiler was temporarily running and left. It failed again shortly after. Despite advertising 24/7 emergency service, Petro took over 10 hours to return my emergency call and still could not dispatch a technician for days. I have an infant and an 80-year-old in the home. Petro also refused an emergency oil delivery and prohibited using an outside provider, leaving us without heat and without options. This is not emergency service--it's unacceptable. read more

Be very, very sure you want to establish an account with this company. We live in northeastern CT and decided a month or so after establishing an account and service contract with them that we wanted to use a local oil company that was only a couple miles from our house and was recommended by several local people, including our contractor. Had petro for the years i lived there for propane, then they did a fill amd charged me "$5.069" a gallon which at the time was DOUBLE what every other supplier charged .i disconnected the tank and had the propane transferred to my new private owned tank so i can shop for propame. The empty petro tank now sits in the open driveway a d i have moved away, told new owners they can leave it there or sell the tank on facebook marketplace or call petro and tell them to take it. I have been a customer for a very long time. I have been disappointed in the past. I usually get a fill up around March 25th. This year In March of 26 the oil prices started to spike because of the war.it went from $80 a barrel to $120 a barrel in a day or two. On March 9th it peaked at the high point. They filled my tank and in the next day or so, it went back down to the $80 a barrel range. I have to pay an extra $2 per gallon for oil. This sure sounds like price gouging to me. Two months prior another technician said, " just keep an eye on it". They just stone cold stopped my oil delivery in the middle of winter. They make you take a day off from work for a regular annual checkup...they give you a mid-day 3-4hr window for the appt, and then the tech shows up at 7PM...or never... We have service contract with Petro for our HVAC system. They also deliver our heating oil. We are huge fans and couldn't be happier with the service they provide. Going on a decade as a customer and have never had an issue. They are always there for us when we need them. Their phone support is excellent, their in-person technicians are skilled and smart, and they always get to us same-day or next-day when things break (we have a service contract). I don't understand these one-star reviews at all. Ten years in and have probably had 50 service calls and oil deliveries and have never had an issue! read more

Petro is NOT to be trusted. We are on a contract plan with them to ensure our oil is filled without delay and there have been multiple times we've run out of oil and they haven't kept our heat on. They never have a good reason why... In addition, during this unprecedented snow (Feb 2026), they have refused to fill tanks if they have to walk in snow to get to them. And we, and MANY others, have been unable to get a delivery because they simply leave - without trying to call, knock on the door or leave a note about not being able to access the pipe because they won't walk through the snow. Keep in mind our walking paths (the driveway and walkway) are fully shoveled but Petro generally comes along the side of the house (where no one in winter walks). When we ran out of heat yesterday (with a feels like temperature of -10) with 2 little kids in the house, we called them for an emergency delivery. They did not call us back for 15 hours (as I'm sure everyone is calling because they are NOT delivering oil because of snow) and when they called us back they blamed the lack of delivery on us and only offered a small delivery (10 gallons) for the NEXT DAY - so they were ok with us not having heat with small children in 4 degree weather for over 48 hours. They are more concerned about the grown men working for them who might 'fall in the snow' than elderly people and babies. It's disgusting. Once we finish our contract will will change companies! I have been a Petro customer since 1993. In 2009 the Oil delivery person broke the outside oil tank and I had Oil spilling all over my yard into my well house and basement. Petro replaced the broken tank, the DEC had to dig up all around the spill area. The tank is sinking and Petro wants me to pay $650 to have it fixed saying it's my responsibility. THEY INSTALLED IT!! Credit department does not care about their customers and what they are going through, was willing to pay up to a certain amount but they want a thousand more than that. Been a customer for 10 years and aren't even willing to have a discussion on a flexible payment plan. The price plans and other plans go up every single year, even on a price cap you are still more expensive than every other company. Beware!!! On my contract it states I will be getting a 2.5 ton evaporator and 2.5 ton condenser. Petro installed a 3 ton evaporator and 3.5 ton condenser. My house is 1097 sq feet From my research this will shorten the life of the unit and not efficient. I have lost sleep worrying about the mismatch size and ton. After waiting 8 days and another email, I finally spoke to the manager and I am not satisfy with our conversation. I know it works now, but what about a short few years from now. Also the installer didn't want to replace the refrigerant lines even though it is in the contract. Initially he lied and said he didn't bring them. He didn't want to do it even though the line was short from the furnace to the outside. When I brought up the contract he resentfully installed them but they were done sloppy. The line insulation was ripped. The entries on the evaporator box were torned. I feel air blowing out. Not sure if that's ok. The 2 red plugs keep popping out when the unit is running. 1st photo bottom left. The taping of the vent was loose and incomplete. There were existing nail holes that were not covered. I had to retape many areas. I trusted Petro Home Service. I feel deceived. read more

I think my mom is being taken advantage of. We called for a service appointment earlier this week. Mind you, my mom has a service plan for $300. The guy came (late) and said he added something to the unit and checked that the AC was working. He charges her $300. What's the service plan for? An hour later, my mom calls saying she's hot and the house is 86 degrees. They send a guy out today, he adds freon to the unit, and charges her another $300. But she's still hot, and it's still 86 degrees in her house. It's just my mom and my disabled siblings, so this is extra egregious. Was scheduled for an air conditioner tune up for today 6/30 between 12-3. However my a/c went out last Wednesday in the middle of the 99 degree heat wave so i called and requested an earlier date, none was available I was told . Today no show by Petro at 3, or 4 ,or 5. ...... After 3 calls by me i was told they cancelled my appointment with no call,no email ...... Nothing. The best they could do was now schedule an appointment for wed 7/2 between 8 and 12. I now have been without a/c going on 1 week. I ama retired 77 yo with health conditions which seems of no matter to petro. I have a customer for 15 years and stayed with Petro for their service. I went thru similar situation with no heat for 2+ days mid winter. Petro does not have enough staff to service their customer base. But they sure can charge the highest prices for oil/service. Stay away from Petro unless you want to be have money stolen from you with surprise renewal fees! They also have the most expensive heating oil around. I used Petro's automatic delivery for 1 year and it was an awful experience. They consistently charged over the average NYS price for heating oil. On the last delivery they charged me $0.90 more per gallon than half a dozen other suppliers. When I tried to cancel my agreement with them they made it purposefully difficult. There's no online option to cancel so you're at the mercy of their customer support service. It took 4 phone calls to stop the auto renewal of the agreement. They also billed me $325 for a renewal fee without any notice of the fee. Good thing I had already disabled autopay or they'd have stolen that money from me. Bad business, zero stars. read more

Once again there is no point in having a service contract with this company. I have service agreements for central air, water heater and the oil burner and all are the top upgraded contracts, That are supposed to be 24/7 emergency service but that is a lie, 24/7 service does not exist with this company so that's false advertising. I called this morning explaining I'm hearing loud noises from the burner and I am nervous to turn it on. They gave me an appointment between 5-8 today. 8pm comes and I get a call they have to cancel and could care less it's freezing and I can't turn the heat on, I get they could be here in two days maybe was the exact phrase. I am so sick of this with this company it's the fourth time this happened. Which also tells me they never fix it right in the first place. So now I'll have to go to a hotel which petro wont reimburse so I guess add that to the price of the very expensive service contract I purchased. I've used this company in the past and generally it has been pretty good. My AC gave out one day they gave me a price to come and diagnose it. The men were courteous and did a good job. The issue I have is that they don't roll. The diagnostic cost into the cost of the repair. Never had that happen everywhere I go there was a diagnostic fee or fee to come for the man's time, but generally that's waived when they are doing the work if I choose not to do the work, then I understand paying for it. In the future, I will use them to diagnose it and then I'll get the part and have someone for half the price do the work it's just poor bad business on your part. If you diagnose it then you have to tell me what's wrong with it and I could easily get someone else to do it much cheaper than you so it's just Nickel and dime a person I won't be using you again to fix anything. I'll be using you to diagnose it and they're getting someone for half the price to do it. Sorry everyone else should do it too. Just ask them to diagnose it, but don't actually have to fix it. I have been using petro with price cap delivery, but always found my price is at lease $1 higher than any other oil supplier. In recent bills (Jan ~ Feb, 2025) my price was $4.59. I checked my bill history, the rate barely changed. It doesn't look like flucturating to reflect market oil price. I believe price cap is a scam because it gives your a sense of security so they can over charge you until you find out something not right. I called them their loyalty department and they were so forward to offer a cheaper rate. It's too late because if it were little less it wouldn't change my mind, if it were significant less, it would mean i overpaid too much. I canceled my account and will never come back. As longstanding customers for over a decade we missed a payment this past summer due to extended traveling. When we returned and got our held mail from the post office we discovered the missed payment. We made the payment late, but Petro cancelled our account the same day the payment in full was received. They did this after attempting to run a credit check on my wife's credit which is frozen due to fraud. We asked them to re-run the credit check offering to unfreeze our credit. They refused and said that they had to wait a year to re-run the credit check. They said that we would have to come up with ANOTHER $500 security payment in order to reinstate our account. We tried to reason with them but they refused to listen or work with us. Three days later they removed our tank from our property while we were away, leaving our home with no fuel. This is no way to treat customers with a good payment history. This is why they only have 1 out of 5 star rating from the Better Business Bureau. FIND ANOTHER COMPANY. read more

My neighbors do not have COD they have another company with a much lower cap and a service contract. Petro dropped off oil as scheduled and said the tank would need to be replaced and walked out. We hadn't heard from them for months. They sent 1 written communication via email to their 70 yr old customer asking to call them. Not a warning, could have just been a regular upsell or offer and then they let her oil run dry. A 70 yr old women without heat in the middle of Jan on a Saturday is how we find out they let the oil run out. So we call them and they come out the next day and add enough oil for two days or so and say your account is marked red capped and we won't fill it. We get a manager call back on Monday and says it was an error in their testing and they'll do a full drop right away. When I call to discuss how they can let a 70yr old women run out of heat, their reaponse is to blame some other company Millrose that was supposed to contact her. Instead of apologizing or admitting they could have avoided turning off her heat or could have facilitated a temp tank they just get defensive and say it was all OK because they came out a day later... After asking for their supervisor, they call me back and tell me they won't drop her oil again if she doesn't replace the tank again! If I didn't call in to complain about their service all they would have told us was they made a mistake and delivered a full tank. Yet now we need a tank again or get won't deliver. If you're looking for a company just fine with letting your tank run dry or an elderly parent's and then get defensive about it, Petro is for you... unreal. read more

I have had Petro oil even since I can remember. I am definitely changing that now. First let's talk about the rip off prices and the inability to explain them. Today's price per gallon with all other oil companies offering the same product: $2.65. I bought full at 2.95. Petro price: $5.25. I have a big house which burns a lot of oil. 500 gal twin tanks of 250 gal each. Let's compare the price during the winter months. Delivery of at least 340 gal. Petro: $1785. Real price: 340 X 2.65 = $901.00. Now think about this bill every two weeks which what in reality happens at my house. $3570 a month as opposed to $1,802. Summer months half a tank full delivery of 150 gal from Domino Fuel: $442.00 Petro: $787.00 for no reason. If I had not just had bad customer service this past week I would have never checked out other companies and would have continued to throw more at Petro time after time. But no more. I called to make payment arrangements during the summer months which I have been doing every year since 1997. Some idiot picked up the phone in the "credit department" and he said on a bill of $1800 he can only offer two payments within one month. I totaled the payments made to this company from December until now they were in excess of $15,000 just for those months. So I looked elsewhere. I put all deliveries on hold and I am now trying Domino Fuel, a small Long Island Company with similar services and much better prices. We will see how that goes. I also noticed a marked change in Petro staff they have more staff now than ever and they don't care about the customers anymore. I saw review here saying "They still deliver oil without notice even if you cancel the auto delivery and they charge you top dollar for it and the contract is worthless in times of desperation there greed takes over, and they still find some sort of emergency fee to tack on". That is true. For some unknown reason after talking to the credit department they insisted thy had to deliver 250 gal of oil when I told them my tank was still half full. BOTTOM LINE PETRO WAS GOOD THEN BUT NOT GOOD NOW. THEIR PRICES ARE EXORBITANT THEIR SERVICE BECAME NO SERVICE AND IT IS JUST NOT WORTH IT!!! I want to update this post as I received a call from Petro's "retention department" from a person named Chris encouraging me to terminate the account and chastising me for this post and asking me if I really ordered oil from Domino Fuel. I told him that if this is his idea of retaining customers he should seek retraining. So now the idea that Petro has is to harass its customers who post on here. I was on the fence about this account but after Chris's self important call I am now with a supervisor on the phone canceling my account. The supervisor is of course not available. The business owner should really teach his/her staff that if you want to retain customers you apologize and make good not chastise the customers because of unhappy experiences. Do they really hire someone in a "retention department"? Try not calling to harass good customers who paid you a lot of money for decades. This company went to the dumps. It used to be good. I want to further update my posting as of July 2. Happy 4th everyone!!! After Chris' contact, a manger called Donna called me reaching out and telling me that what Chris did was unacceptable.
