This is a nice local pet shop. The staff havs been friendly here. While I don't have a pet, reminded of the Lamb Chop toy I got my nephew's dog here a while back when the other day saw someone's Golden Retriever on the street walking along with its Lamb Chop in its mouth. Went in here to check out what they might have now and saw this giant Lamb Chop! Forget the dogs! Think I may put it on my wish list! P.S. We live in the neighborhood and often pop in to pick up supplies for our cat. The store was entirely empty when we walked in. Today was the second visit in a row that the saleswoman at the register has been awfully rude to my son. I was grabbing treats, and my son was looking for a collar for our cat. We were only 20 feet apart from each other. I watched my son reach out to grab a collar and the saleswoman raised her voice and snapped saying, "DO NOT TOUCH," and then said "look with your eyes not your hands." In that instant I walked out of the store, and will never return or make any future purchases from them ever again. My son is well-behaved, and he has always been welcome to pick things out for our cat when we are there. The previous staff have never treated him this way, and he has never acted inappropriately while we are in the store. This is a family-oriented neighborhood and community, and if you want business from this community, you treat families with kindness as though you appreciate our business. I will happily share my encounter and encourage all my neighborhood friends with pets and children to avoid purchasing from this store. read more

As a Harlem resident for over 30 years, I have witnessed the changes in Harlem over the years, the good, the bad and the ugly. We used to have many mom and pop stores in the neighborhood owned by locals, including pet stores and butchers which I as a cat Mom supported and shopped at for my kitties. Sadly they are all gone now and as a result we are forced to travel outside of our neighborhood to find the most essential stuff. I have frequented Petopia since they opened. One out of convenience and two to support a local business. At some point there was a change of ownership, which also means new staff. The current owner Chris (not a local) and the majority of his staff (not locals) are the absolute opposite of what Harlem represents as far as community, respect and curtesy. I've spent a minimum of $100/week at this store and been met with continued bad customer service, nasty attitudes and rude remarks. In particular by Sam, who was the at the counter one early morning when I came to shop. As soon as I walked in I slipped and took a bad fall on their floor which was wet and slippery. Not to my surprise, Sam remained by the shelf next to the counter, absolutely unfaced, not in any way concerned to see if I was ok or to offer any assistance. I brought this up with the owner Chris, who responded with a blank face!!! He also claimed to have erased the video when I asked for it. I've witnessed this same person Sam interact with Caucasian customers in a very polite manner and tone, but been uncomfortably rude to or totally ignored BIPOC customers. This goes for some of the other staff as well. That being said and shared. I will conveniently not spend my hard earned money at this store again, who one, is not of or in Harlem to support the community and their needs and two, who's company culture and practices are poor and unethical. Harlem is a family oriented neighborhood and community and if you want business from this community you need to treat us with kindness and respect. I will gladly continue sharing my horrific experience(s) with all of my pet loving friends and families in the community and let them know to avoid purchasing from this store. And notice how I didn't mention that whoever is in charge of merchandising, and placing orders, have absolutely no understanding of supply and demand as many products are missing from the shelves for up to three weeks at times. read more

Today was the first snow storm of the season in NYC. It's 12:30pm sun is out, roads are cleared here in Manhattan and it stop snowing this morning. However the delivery service has been unavailable since yesterday. Yesterday the excuse was impending storm (snow began at night long after store closure). Today no delivery because they have no delivery personnel. Again the snow has stopped and the sun is out. This is unreliable service. I will say the person I spoke to was polite and understanding but unable to help. I still have no dog food and a bum leg. read more

I went to the store with my pup, waited on line and when it was turn, the lady behind the counter asked me to allow someone to skip me saying "she was here first, she had to go get something", are you kidding me? I tho maybe she had her transaction on hold, but she actually had to scan all her items, I felt my business wasn't valued and after fighting with myself on should stay while I proceed to wait, I Just walked out the store. Have ordered online several times in the past few months and each time I order I get a call later in the day to tell me that the items I ordered are not available. This is every time I order though, not just once in a while. Unfortunately won't be giving my business any longer if I can never get the things I've ordered. If something is not in stock the website will still show it as in stock instead of updating it so customers aren't wasting their time. Disappointing. read more

I asked about their delivery service. They explained that they charge a minimum of $40 if you deliver north of 135th street, because they also deliver downtown and someone ordered only $20 of dog food previously. HUH? You are in Harlem, not downtown. Change your delivery policy or move out of Harlem. read more

Called at 7:30pm for a delivery... worker took my order. I received a call at 7:51, 9 minutes before closing to be told that they didn't have the bag I wanted, only the smaller size. Also they wouldn't be able to make the delivery bc store was about to close. This is my go-to place for mostly EVERYTHING. I've had good customer service, both in the store, and over the phone.

Odd place. Constantly out of everything, which the openly annoyed employee informed me was due to the fact that "those are the most popular flavors." When I pointed out that they might consider, I dunno, smarter inventory processes ...? given that they will lose customers if they are incapable of keeping basic items in stock, she became even more annoyed and actually rude. I would have been somewhat understanding of the incompetence in stock management if she had not immediately become defensive and "I do not give a crap." It seems that she is, in fact, doing US a favor by accepting our business. She was unimpressed, verging on belligerent, when I eventually reminded her that ordering online means no store and no job for her. I did also point out that we would rather support local businesses. She pointed out in return, "helpfully," that I am welcome to shop elsewhere if I cannot overlook them constantly being out of everything. Hmmm.... Oddly, this is the second time I had this conversation with an employee at this Petopia (I won't visit any after this ...), once in person and then for a delivery today. Let me start by saying they have a really great selection of healthy foods and pet accessories, their sales people are polite, they have great hours and are centrally located. I've purchased many things here over the past few months. There are two more things that I have to share. 1. The unreal markup on their pet supplies. I've gone in several times and get annoyed when I look at Amazon, they have everything almost half off. Trust me, before you buy anything here, look on Amazon first. I've gone back to Petopia simply for the convenience of it - they are on my block. 2. Their return policy could use adjusting. I understand you can't re-sell opened merchandise. However, if someone suggests a product will do what you're looking for based on the criteria you tell them, you expect the item to do that, specially if they work in a specialty store like a pet shop. The day my rescue dog arrived, I needed a de-shedding tool. I told her he was about 10 lbs and had short hair but was shedding like crazy! I've never used a de-shedder tool and trusted her recommendation - even when the tool said medium/long hair. Needless to say, it didn't work. Not even a dozen hairs came off the dog. I went back to return it, exchange it or even get a store credit but was told several times there was nothing they could do and that I should contact the manufacturer. Money isn't the issue here. The de-shedder was less than $20, I was more upset at the fact that they blew me off with such a stupid suggestion. read more

I am really happy this store opened in our neighborhood! It is wonderful to be able to rely on them to carry my dog's food and not have to worry about hauling it on the subway or arranging delivery.
