The investment really shows -- from the roads and landscaping to the public spaces along the water. It's one of the best places in Detroit to relax, walk, or ride, and the bike paths are perfect whether you're on a regular bike, e-bike, scooter, or just cruising around the island. The views of the Detroit River and skyline make it feel like a completely different environment from the city only minutes away.

They took a bad park and made it horrible. The park used to: Flood Have bad mosquitos 2 playgrounds Lots of run down equipment A walking path. They removed the playgrounds and replaced it with half of a new one that I could have built with 4 2x8s and some PVC pipe and plastic. They added a bathroom/dog wash that's been closed every time I've been there. A fence that splits the park in half and destroys the walking path. So now you have HALF a park that: Floods Has bad mosquitos Lost the walking path Lost the playgrounds Still has run down equipment. This city is horrible. This park is horrible. It has a paved walking path around the perimeter and some playground equipment that is in dire need of TLC. They had an accessible friendly playscape but removed it at the end of last summer and are building a restroom pavilion. Avoid the park at all costs after a rainstorm during the spring / summer due to the mosquitos because they will literally carry you out of their park. We've also had a few run ins with dogs off leash which is frustrating. This park is slated for upgrades in the coming years.

It is a beautiful park in downtown Detroit (at least in the day time) and with the shaded tables, a perfect spot for a bite or a drink on a super hot day. Named Campus Martius for "Field of Mars" it is the reference point for Detroit's "mile" roads. Look for the Zero Mile Marker on the ground - Seven Mile and Eight Mile are precisely seven and eight miles from this spot, respectively. It was originally a militia drill ground back in the 1800s and the First Michigan Infantry Regiment departed from Campus Martius in 1861 for the Civil War. The park opened in 2004 and includes the beautiful Woodward Fountain, a seasonal ice rink and a seasonal beach. The - Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is also here. If you are renting gear they get you fitted for a backpack and show you how to setup the tent. They go over and distribute group gear, and food, and help you learn how to pack your bag! If you've never backpacked before this is an amazing way to try it without having to buy all the gear! Plus they have a very comprehensive packing list so you know you'll have what you need out on the trail. Days 1-5: We traveled to the island by ferry and began our adventure. We hiked around 4 miles most days with one long day that we hiked around 8 miles. The trails on island are gorgeous and rugged. There was so much wildlife to see including: foxes, beavers, loons, cranes, frogs, bald eagles, and even a wolf! In the mornings we were greeted in the mornings by beautiful sunrises and at night with amazing views of the milky way. I honestly can say I wish the trip was longer! If you have ever been even curious about backpacking I can't recommend PackRatz Adventures' trips enough. Erin and the other guides were super knowledgable and just genuinely great people.

When people talk about green spaces in Detroit Belle Isle gets a lot of love, and it should! It's…read moreawesome! But did you know Rouge Park is actually the largest green space in the city and is larger than Belle Isle, Campus Martius, Capitol Park, Grand Circus, and Hart Plaza COMBINED? It's 1300 ACRES. That's a lot of trees, ya dig? But that's not all they've got. They have 7 miles of paved trails (and a 3 mile mountain biking trail loop) and there are actually a ton of amenities here beyond trails. They've got an archery range, in the summertime there are public pools, and there's even an model plane airfield where you can launch your own planes or watch the hobbyists take to the skies on the weekends. D-town farm is also on the property if you wanted to check out their organic urban farm and an independently operated golf course is also found there. It's such a wide expanse that some areas are less manicured than others but overall it's such an amazing resource that we should spend more time supporting.
