The gazebo at Huroc park. A great place to rest and enjoy the view.

A great park for all ages! Go for a walk, run, bike, or skate! A river with small falls runs through the park and there are always fishermen and women out on the banks. There's a small playground for the kids and lots of open space for them to run! The bike path runs for miles, from lake Erie through Huroc Park and past Oakwoods Metro Park. I would give 5 except for the condition of the bike path. It looks like someone is trying to maintain it, but there are areas of decent sized gaps that need to be addressed. I felt everyone of them on my bike today. Over all, this is a great local park to have fun! There is also a lil street taco place on the riverfront with patio seating facing the river. Fantastic views, you should go!

One of the best things about Flat Rock, a community that I am just now learning about. Huroc Park is big and spacious, well maintained and a great spot to spend an afternoon. In the summer time the park is filled with the hustle and bustle of families enjoying the playground equipment, the fishing opportunities, bird watching or any number of other things. The park also hosts special events like Riverfest and Country Jam, both of which are great ways to enjoy a free event with the family. The (within a year) recently completed Downriver Linked Greenways trails provide lots of walking and biking opportunities to enjoy, and occasionally you'll even see a kayaker or three enjoying the river. This past summer, on one special day, I even saw a small group of 15 or so people dressed in superhero costumes taking pictures near some of the large trees near the water. They looked like they were having a blast. Earlier today I saw dozens of ducks and geese wandering through the near-empty snow covered park. They were also enjoying not-yet-frozen spots in the lake as a lone ice-fisherman cast his line on the riverbank.

This has always been a to go place for me. It used to be more prettier, I think. City of Flat Rock should invest more money in this park... I remember a lot more trees, which make me sad that they seemed to be cut down... However I grew up here and this park has seen me grow from a child running around in all the Michigan seasons, to a teen enjoying kisses while watching tutrles sunbathe with her crush to sharing broken hearts with nature through writings in a book, to a woman coming back to visit her family from an unruly and busy San Diego.

My daughter and i walk there and feed the ducks and geese. The park is clean and they have lights that go on in the dark so you are safe.

This is the first time I've been to this or any metropark her in Michigan. I had mixed feelings…read more The trails were good and it looked like a great place to walk or bike and see some nature. The attractions and activities for kids were a bit disappointing. The wave pool looked like it was very run down and closed with weeds growing in the concrete. The playgrounds we're really cool, but being in a nature park and around so much water, they had lots of little bugs and spider webs everywhere. I tried to clear some for us to play but gave up after about 30 of them.

My low hanging fruit of forgotten reviews/throw shade at Lake Erie tour continues!…read more Between stumbling across Wolcott Mill in 2017 and sometime last year I made a project of visiting any of the 13 Huron-Clinton Metroparks I hadn't yet been to. Covid really accelerated this long languishing mission. I envisioned Lake Erie Metropark as one of the Crown Jewels, sitting as it does on the lower end of the horseshoe made by the park system, and sitting right on a Great Lake. (Even if it's Erie.) I also figured it to be some bizarro version of Lake St. Clair Metropark, the one park in the chain I've been to far more than any of the others. Back in the summer of 2020 I drove down here with my friend Aaron to go swimming at the non-existent beach. D'oh! My own damn fault there; I should have done three minutes of research instead of assuming LEMP (does anyone use this acronym?) had a beach since it just had to be the bizarro LSCMP. (I've never seen anyone use that acronym.) With as much pollution goes on Downriver I should have just figured no beach and I'm not even questioning that there's a damn good reason there. (See my review of Sterling State Park a few miles farther south into Lake Erie where the water still seems pretty grimy.) On that August day I drove way out to Kensington to visit one of their two beaches instead. Kensington is an outstanding Metropark by the way, the true Crown Jewel of the chain. I returned the next year to hike some trails. 2.75 miles of trails is comparable to its lake-hugging cousin up in Harrison Township I'm guessing but nowhere near the many miles you'll find at Stony Creek or the aforementioned Kensington. Some marshy areas, some woods. I haven't visited the nature center but judging by the ones at Lake St. Clair and Stony Creek I'm guessing it's kinda cool but nothing too stellar. Like don't expect a whole Natural History Museum. I haven't been to the wave pool either but it's odd to me they have that in lieu of a regular swimming pool. The lakefront itself is scenic but not as picturesque as Lake St. Clair. As another reviewer wrote it's strange large areas are so devoid of trees. Wetlands I get, they're essential, but big ol fields just stretching far and wide? Yawn. I hear this park is great for bird watching but that's a hobby I haven't yet picked up. And I've peeped a couple lovely sunrise pics from here which makes me suspect it's a pretty spectacular spot for that. It's just aways out of my way for me to make it at the crack of dawn. I do love my Lake St. Clair Metropark sunrises at the northern end of the metro area though. As I wrote of another Metropark, this place strikes me as being very mid. Let me say mid-tier. That sounds more sophisticated. Looking back over what I've written here this review reads a lot like a two star but it's not really that uninspiring here. There is beauty to be found. It's just the Huron-Clinton Metroparks set the bar fairly high and my constant, probably annoying comparisons to the other parks illustrate Lake Erie just doesn't meet some of the benchmarks. I'd probably have sentimental attachment like I do with Lake St. Clair Metropark (and uh, their beach is usually pretty unswimmable) but I'm not from around here. I'm very keen on going back to Lower Huron, Wolcott Mill and Indian Springs Metroparks (still incomplete grades for Yelp reviews - more to see!) but I doubt I'll return to the Southernmost park in the system.

In regard to waterfowling, people often dump on this place because:…read more 1) The open marsh areas can get super crowded--not a great thing for a sport involving shotguns. Get out there early if you want a good spot, but don't be surprised if someone motors in ten minutes before shooting time and sets up 50 yards from you. 2) You will run into slob hunters: people who skybust, crowd your zone in the managed areas, try to bully you out of your spot, call constantly (and badly) thus driving off ducks working your spread, shoot grebes, seagulls, and swans, and dump trash in parking lots. 3) A lot of time the hunting can be poor. 4) There are only about four zones in the managed area that are usually productive. 5) Thefts from cars aren't unusual at the boat launches, and when you get to one in the wee hours of the morning, you can run into some sketchy characters. But you have to take the bad with the good. There is probably not a better public waterfowling area near Detroit. It's accessible for walk-in hunters as well as those with boats. There's some great habitat and the staff there works hard maintaining and improving it. Hit this place during a migration and the hunting can be fantastic. And while the slobs are always out, you'll meet some great people there too: very skilled hunters, guys who will help you get your boat in and out, even some who invite you to join their party. More often than not other hunters are sportsmanlike and friendly, despite those sometimes sour a hunt there. If Pte. Mouillee were farther from a major population center it likely wouldn't have many of the problems it does. But waterfowlers in Detroit wouldn't enjoy nearly the opportunities they have thanks to it.

On weekends, it's hard to find a place to even fish, because it's so crowded. There's always a flow of boats coming and going from the docks. I like that you can pull up right to the water and fish, so it's convenient to listen to the radio in your car and not lug supplies all around. I've been here many times with a cooler full of beer and haven't had a problem with that. The waters can be somewhat clogged with grass, but there are some good fish in there.
