Loved how tucked away the location felt, despite being super conveniently located with a large free parking lot on site at Orleans and Wilkins. There was a full bar, giant/oversize yard games, and nice outdoor seating. Little Asian Bites brought the food, DJ, and other fun vendors like Pong Detroit and Scrap Soils for composting (perfect for a food event!). We were right on the Dequindre Cut bike/foot path and had plenty of walkers and bikers passing by. Just felt like a really ideal summer evening!

The building was later repurposed as Detroit's first public high school before being destroyed by fire in 1893. The land was then converted into a public park, and it has remained a civic space ever since. The park has some trees (not very tall yet), tables and chairs with umbrellas, a historical marker and a statue of Michigan's first governor. I think you do need to bring your pieces though. You will also find a lending library, which is decorated with cardinals there too. I did not see a parking lot, but there is some free street parking available. The park is well maintained and has benches placed along the park and a memorial flag honoring veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Persian Gulf War. The park hosts a farmer's market on Wednesday's from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. when in season. Even though this park is very small and does not have any restrooms, or trails, I like it. It is very clean and well maintained. It also offers a good place to relax and reflect or play some classic games outdoors.

The area it is in benefits from it as it a welcome draught of beauty and well designed space in an urban environment. The gazebo is very nice and appreciated as a place to sit during inclement weather and to enjoy in the summertime. The benches scattered through the park invite rest no matter which direction you are traversing the park. There is no play area here and it is on a busy intersection so this is not a play park. The Melvindale Veterans Memorial is also located here. During the summertime and into the fall Melvindale hosts their Farmers' Market here. It is in a good location as it is between a commercial area with stores and restaurants and a very set of neighborhoods. The park is also graced with a lending library where people can take a book and leave a book. The lending library box is tastefully decorated with cardinals and trailing vines.

It's such a majestic fountain in a picturesque setting on the near-bottom tip of Belle Isle, but…read moreit's really the back story about its namesake that makes it intriguing. James Scott was not a founding father of Detroit but a gambler who frequently made politically incorrect comments and bequeathed $200K to have the fountain built in his honor with a life-size statue of him mounted on top. As it turned out, his likeness didn't make it in the fountain but rather inconspicuously on the perimeter probably to his eternal chagrin (photo: http://bit.ly/2G5vIYF). According to Wikipedia, he was described as a "vindictive, scurrilous misanthrope" who attempted to intimidate those he felt were out to get him and stooped to the lowest level to satisfy his need for power. Hmmm, I wonder why he sounds so familiar. I know it'll come to me. This is a small but awesome park. It is open from 6AM to 10PM. It has paved bike and running…read moretrails and a nearby parking lot that offers 2 hour free parking. It is located right next to a Coast Guard base and has a spectacular view of the waterfront. There are benches all over the park that you can sit and take it all in. During the warm weather months there is a snack bar with a covered patio area. As an added bonus their is a bike rack with bike repair tools available, restrooms and a stocked soda machine on the patio area. The park is well maintained and clean. In the warm months this place turns into a small waterpark with a schooner-themed splash pad featuring water cascades and "kid activated" water cannons, wind chimes and many other interactive features. I visited this place during the colder months so it was pretty dead, but tranquil and peaceful. Nice to just sit on the waterfront and watch the river. In the summer it looks like this place would be bustling, post COVID of course. As it is now, it is still a cool place to hang out, ride your bike and catch a run. All in all, I enjoyed my time at the park and look forward to visiting again real soon.

I visited recently with a friend in order to walk the park's labyrinth. Labyrinths are have existed from ancient times. They are carefully constructed patterns that one walks as an aid to meditation. The one in Gabriel Richard park is located west of the butterfly walks in the shadow of the Belle Isle Bridge. It was lovely and calming to slowly walk the labyrinth's pattern with the hot sun shining down and a cooling breeze wafting off the river. If I could, I would visit the park several times a month. And if you can, you should visit it this summer (2016).
