The Bell has modern, smart decor. I dined at the bistro, but a more exclusive and expensive restaurant is also located here. The bistro menu is modern twist on classic British dishes. They are done really well. No fancy dishes here. I was in a group of ten and we were easily accomodated. I had the fisherman's pie and I have to say it was the best I've had in my life. At around £10 to £11 it wasn't the cheapest fisherman's pie I've eaten, but it surpassed my expectations. There was planty of succulent fish and plump seafood pieces in white sauce topped with a tasty mash. The dessert of sticky toffee pudding was pretty good too. The restaurant also served real ale or other beers and drinks, so all round it was a good place to eat.

We had the full Bell Inn experience for a good friend's wedding dinner and reception. It was mostly…read moregood, but a few overlooked elements--the most critical of which was the room we stayed in--bring it down a few notches. I should mention immediately that the staff was very attentive and courteous throughout every aspect of our stay, from the wait staff, hotel reception, and bartenders. I could not have asked for, or expected, better service than we received. Well done! Now for the other basics: the food was great (pate, chicken, dessert, and nibbles during the reception), and the common areas and reception rooms at the hotel were very nice. The hot, made-to-order breakfast the following morning was a nice touch, even if only offered for a short time period (8-9:30am) Yada, yada, yada... So why, three stars? Some background: My friend and I first met when he was the bartender at my local village pub. He introduced me to all the village locals on my first night in village after moving over from the US. He helped me to fit in. He also taught me about some great British concoctions, most memorably, the snakebite and snakebite black. (That's half lager, half cider, with added blackcurrant cordial, for those unaware.) It was our goal to, at his wedding, share a snakebite to toast his marriage. However, apparently The Bell Inn employs and anti-snakebite policy. The bartender flat-out refused to make us a couple of snakebites. No exceptions, not even for the groom and his mate on his wedding day. Are you kidding me? I understand the drink has a bit of a reputation for causing violence, but what groom is going to get in a bar fight on his wedding day? Or, perhaps more appropriately, what wife will allow her new husband to get into a bar fight on their wedding night? We're not at a Manchester United football match. Now let's talk about this room. We were privileged to be offered a room by the bride and groom, so I did not have much input or insight into the various room classes at the hotel. Our room was situated at the end of a long corridor, which was a great location, given its distance from the ongoing reception below. The room itself, however, was in desperate need of a makeover. From the pink porcelain in the bathroom, to the bright red carpet, the interior design was from a different era--I don't know which era, but it isn't one I hope we see again anytime soon. So, a mixed experience. Great for a meal out in Stilton, if that's your choice, but some aspects are overlooked.

The reception was very efficient and the room was comfortable, though the décor was a little like a chain (weird bright 80s style curtains). The interior is a bit of a maze and the interior signage could do with some improvement - it took a couple of goes to find our room (not good with heavy luggage). Breakfast was OK, but service was very slow on the first day - they were a bit overwhelmed, and the system where the hot buffet, toast and tea and coffee are served (as opposed to being part of the buffet) meant we had to wait. The choice was also a bit limited - the breakfast area was surprisingly cramped. Things were much improved on the following day. Our evening meal was very nice though, and the bar area is very pleasant. I had two problems during my stay, one dealt with better than the other. The first was a problem with the automatic entry into the car park, which wasn't working properly, and I could not raise help on the intercom (I had to wait ten minutes on the street to get in). The front desk were very apologetic, but the promised explanation from management never came. Then I found a piece of plastic in my pasta on the second evening. The manager was immediately and extremely apologetic and offered free drinks as an apology, which was, in the circumstances, the best way of resolving the problem. Check out - often a failing of hotels - was swift and efficient. Staff throughout were friendly and approachable. So, not a problem-free stay, but I may have been unfortunate. Better (simpler) management of the breakfast would lift things.

After a certain time, you can pay via credit card and get a room key without desk staff being on the premises, so we got a few rooms between six of us. Bunk beds.but that was ok, we just wanted a bed for the night. At around £25 per room per night, I suppose you get what you pay for. It didnt take long though, for us to realise that most of the 'ladies of the night' of Peterborough were also using the hotel to get what they paid for, which made for an entertaining night in itself. It served a purpose, we were up and out at around 8 the next morning, and it was preferable to sleeping in a ditch and cheaper than getting a taxi to take us the 30 miles across the fens and then catching the train back to reclaim the cars, but its not the kind of place to consider staying at if you're even halfway sober. Apparently it was recently taken over by Metro Hotels, so perhaps its now a little classier. Do your research ahead of time if you're considering it.

Definitely upscale, nice for important family events. Seems geared to the 50+ crowd (which is fine by me!) The food is good and if you're staying at the hotel, it's quite convenient. My Royal Eggs Benedict was nothing exciting, but fine. Maybe my expectations were too high. The fried fish sandwich was also good. Coffees were good. No complaints, just nothing that made me think "Wow!". The restaurant just updated their menu for the Fall season - so if you've been here before, maybe take a look again to see what's new. This is our second time staying at the hotel. It's always very clean and the staff is attentive. It can't be easy running a business out of a centuries-old building. I give them credit for keeping the historic feel while maintaining the standards of 21st century hospitality (and plumbing!) Our shower, in particular, was luxurious. Also there's a nice set up of teas, coffee and Nespresso, with milk packets and biscuits (cookies). We overlook the path to the car park outside, there's good natural light along with blackout curtains for when you need to sleep in. If you need a place to sleep several guests/family members, and then host a brunch in the morning, this would be perfect.

The oldest part dates back to around 1670, with other parts added on over the years, so the main bar and restaurant area has an appropriate old-world feel, with beams and open fires. The main building has a restaurant with several different seating areas, and a bar/lounge area with armchairs and (in winter) a real fire. I had a very nice meal (dinner) indeed - although many seem to stop for just for a coffee to break their journey. (So much nice than a service station!). They also serve real ale for those not driving. The accommodation is located in both the main building and in the adjacent blocks, converted from old farm buildings, which form an attractive courtyard area at the rear. Next to this are a series of function rooms - the Inn is a popular venue both for meetings and for wedding receptions - with a very impressive marquee. The site has ample parking. There are 19 rooms, most of which have been refurbished to a very high standard, and are all en-suite. I had a sneak look at the bridal suite, which is beautifully done out in cream, chocolate and gold, and has a spacious modern bathroom suite. Those at the rear of the hotel have lovely views over fields and countryside: a small number face the A1. These have deep double-glazing, and I slept like a log, although really light sleepers may still hear the passing traffic and should ask for a room at the rear. Room rates (B&B) range from £50 single to £120 (for two, obviously!) for the Bridal Suite. Staff are very friendly, and informal in a nice sort of way - and they seem to have a regular clientele of loyal customers as a result.
