This hotel is located almost directly on the banks of the river Cam and overlooking the beautiful Jesus Green, just a short walk or bus/taxi ride from the city centre and train station. It consists of a number of Victorian buildings that have been knocked into one as well as a separate outbuilding with further rooms out the back. There is a rather busy road running along the front but there is not much traffic noise at night. One major advantage for an establishment in central Cambridge is that it offers free car parking to its guests.
It has a lovely 'Old England' atmosphere with plenty of flower-patterend wall paper, so if chintz is your thing then this is the place to go!
The hotel serves breakfast and lunches in a large conservatory to the back and also has a restaurant in the lower ground floor serving table d'hote and a la carte meals of traditional British cuisine.
My parents stayed there for a week in October 2005 and had a mixed experience: while the staff were polite and helpful without exception, they felt that both the rooms they were given - they had to move mid-week - could have been cleaner. Also, they really took issue with the fact that the entire hotel, but especially the conservatory breakfast room, was uncomfortably chilly. Overall, they felt that it did not represent good enough value for money and have stayed elsewhere on other visits. read more
