Such an endearing gaze for a creamer or gravy boat ... I'll take you home

It's been years since we last visited Peter Pots and it has changed indeed. It used to be a rather prosaic no-frills showroom, but it looks to have been remodeled and it is a more welcoming, warmer, and brighter space. What hasn't changed is the wares - a still charming and diverse assortment of housewares and decorative items. What also hasn't changed is its beautiful waterway and view of the Queen River, bespeaking its heritage of a former millwork. It's a bit out of the way, but well worth the visit - we picked up some nice stocking stuffers for the holidays!

The pictures say it all. Backstory: these mugs are from the early 80's...from my family...who drinks a lot of coffee. I'm amazed to see them still intact after nearly a half century. Nicely done Peter Pots (and according to the inscription, Jan)

We purchased several place settings of this beautiful and functional stoneware shortly after we were married close to 40 years ago and, minus a few accidents, have been in daily use ever since. We recently decided to bring in a few broken and/or discolored pieces on Butterfingers Day, the first Saturday of the month when up to 6 pieces may be replaced at 50% off after making a $5 additional purchase. The owner, Oliver Greene, has to be in his 90's and has a tendency to be a bit surly, but I cut him a little slack and did not take his comments personally. He advised us that our discolored plates and saucers could be restored by using silver polish. This stoneware has proven to be a lifetime investment for us so I was amazed that dinner plates, originally retailing for $20-$25, now fetch only $30. We could not be happier with our investment.

I really like everything about this pottery. The old mill it's situated in, the clean lines of the mid - century modern design of the pottery, and the fact that the pottery's displayed among a bunch of really cool antiques (also for sale), picked by the potter Oliver Greene. They have 2 very cool programs, which I'll describe, but please check their website for details. One is "Butterfinger's Day." Lets say you brought home some great coffee mugs and you break one. (We did.) Bring the pieces back to the pottery, and buy a replacement 1/2 price. The second one has to do with their cool piggy/rabbit/whale/quahog banks. Buy a bank, fill with coins, bring back to pottery, smash bank, if $25 or over spend that coin on pottery, receive a NEW BANK to start all over again. I filled my Whale Bank with $60 assorted change (no pennies please), couldn't bear to smash it, we uncorked it, and I brought it home with a new Piggy Bank. Makes saving fun! Super cool, and just a stone's throw from the Kenyon Grist Mill, and a larger stone's throw from RI University, & also a really great used book store (The Kingston Hill Store). A nice little area to pass through on the way to the RI beaches.

The store is an experience and I have many wonderful antique items from my lively chats with Oliver Greene over the years.

Best selection of knives. Was really excited to discover this store, and see that they take knives…read moreseriously. In Downtown LA there is a fantastic store that has an insane number of knives... maybe too many. This store claims that they they have the biggest selection of knives in New England. I feel like they have enough good knives to have a varied enough selection for different preferences, but yet not overwhelming their customers with too many choices. I got a great bread knife that I'm really happy with recently. It's just the right weight (not to light) and has a really comfortable grip and an "elegant" length. It makes cutting breads really smooth and easy to cut very thin slices. It is apparently their best bread knife, and at $150, I think the price is right. Despite being on Beacon Hill, I don't feel that their prices are high or unreasonable, but just right. The store is fun to browse through for many other kitchen or cooking supplies or gifts. As a well-stocked mom and pop store it has that quality of surprise at finding something you never thought about. The personnel is also very helpful. I've been there a couple times and they seem to be knowledgeable and willing to help, to explain things and answer questions. They have personal experience with the things they sell.

But the service was bad and we encuntered terrible attitude. First of all, for a fine knife store, there was no ability to try any knife. We selected a Mac 6.5in for $150 based on our past experience. It turned out they only have the one display knife to sell in the store. We also wanted to buy a magnetic knife holder. Again, it is only available inside the sealed box. We could not open the box to examine the product. We decided to just buy the knife as a gift. Paid by credit card but had to ask the clerk to get my receipt. Even that, the first offer was by email only. Overall, it was a terrible experience. Do not go there. Not worth it.

Fantastic friendly and helpful staff. We loaded up on gourmet popcorn and seasonings, olive oils and vinegars, plus a serving tray, popcorn bucket, wine tote and god knows what else. Had to go back to the car to store it because it was too much to carry around. The upstairs section lets you taste maybe a hundred different types of oils and vinegars. They have serving suggestions and select recipes for the current season. They ahve things to serve them in (although the bottles themselves look very nice). Downstairs are the other kitchen items with special seasonings for everything you might want to serve, special things to serve them on, etc. etc. etc. We bought a popcorn bowl with a grate in the bottom for the uncooked kernels to fall through. We've used it several time in the first week home and it really works. The popcorn itself is delicious and the seasonings we bought for it make it even more so! I'm going to visit this store, and its sister store across the street, every time I'm in Vineyard Haven.

As we were walking I saw a I sign, AS SEEN ON TV. I'm like the chicken who crossed the road at this point. I walk in and I'm in infomercial heaven! Do you know that cute older woman selling copper pots? It's being sold here! Now don't get it twisted, they also sell a Shcopper pot set, I want the one when the woman puts cheese on the hot pan with no oil and it slides off like magic. Guess what? Those Yoshi BBQ Copper mats? Yup, also being sold here. Party peoples! Snag them as well. There are also items for the kitchen that are not sold on TV, I needed a brush to clean my bar glasses, there's an entire section of cleaning brushes. Need a garlic press? 5 different types being sold here as well as peelers, oil sprayers, mixers, pop corn makers and cook books all being sold at The Kitchen Collection. I had a great sales person, very helpful with our questions. I asked (I ALWAYS ask) Military discount? But of course! I showed my proof and received a little bump. Thank you Kitchen Collection for recognizing all Military personnel. If you have a few minutes and who doesn't need something cool in the kitchen, cross the other side of street and stop in at The Kitchen Collection.
