I've never actually met Dr. Silver, but anyone I meet from his staff is always top-notch and an absolute pleasure to work with. The name is totally slipping me right now, but when I came in for my last bi-yearly check up my hygienist was such a sweetheart! It's obvious that she has a passion for taking care of teeth because she's been in the business for almost 40 years and has worked at this particular practice for around 10 years. Not only did she do a great job helping clean my teeth, but she also gave me some really great tips on tooth care practices to put into place every day. I've never really felt that compelled to make the switch from a regular to an electric tooth brush, but now I think I'm convinced. Overall, this is an office that has really got their stuff together. They have a really organized appointment reminder system and send frequent text/email/call reminders during the days leading up to your appointment. They also never let you leave empty handed and always give out a really cute goodie bag with a bunch of tooth care stuff in it. My old dentist used to just hand out a toothbrush, so it's nice to get a whole assortment of things. As long as they keep taking my insurance, I'll keep on going to this office for my check-ups. Still the best; I went to Dr. Silver for a second opinion today because the diagnosis and treatment plan that was given me by Callen-Lorde's dental clinic really disturbed me. The dentist I saw--never the same one twice--told me I needed 3 (!) extractions and would have to have a "flapper"--but don't worry, I'd get used to it. Dr. Silver examined my mouth, looked at the x-rays, and said I needed two root canals and no extractions. Not great, but I questioned why the other clinic hadn't detected anything six months ago when I got x-rayed. He said I was right to question what the other dentist had said; keeping my teeth is a priority of mine. In the words of Frank Zappa, "Always get a second opinion." read more

I found him quite pushy. Went to see him based on a friend's recommendation. I have pretty healthy teeth, but at that time I had a problem with a small infection. He uses fancy gadgets all right... and then he was telling me all the problem with my infection and that I can get brain infection or something (don't you love it when doctors scare the sh*t out of you?). And then he told me to buy some really strong pills (that gave me severe side affects). He was also pushing for me to get my wisdom teeth removed - which to me is annoying - I don't like doctors insisting on surgery when there's nothing major to be dealt with. I had to go back for a follow-up, and when he found out that I did not take all the pills, he showed his dismay. My problem went away - and he does not seem happy about that either. Rather unpleasant experience. I prefer doctors who do not rely on gadgets (cleaning teeth need not require laser) or pills, and have more faith in, uh, human body, natural food, and common sense. read more

Full Disclosure: I'm 100% biased, because I met Dr. Silver through the lovely and talented Jessica F, so I already knew him before my first appointment. But hey, how often do you meet someone at a party that you would trust to scrape around in your mouth? Don't answer that. Best dentist ever. Yes, really. Utterly painless. I'm so used to having dentists fumbling around and doing something that feels like a continuous brass knuckle punch to the gums. We're totally on the same page about dental care; I don't want any mercury in my mouth, and Dr Silver doesn't even do those kinds of fillings! He should change his name to Dr Composite or something, because he don't use no silver! He charges a fair price, and fully understands if you need to opt out of something that is too expensive for your budget. No guilt involved in any aspect of the process. All my friends were jealous when I told them he called to make sure everything was alright, and that I get text message updates from the guy! Excellent. I think I lucked out again with dentists. (see http://www.yelp.com/biz/thompson-michael-w-dntst-santa-barbara). Dr. Silver is an outstanding dentist. The entire experience visiting his office was helpful, informative and never did they give me even a twinge of guilt. They were even complementary--"You have very strong bone structure!" (referring to my teeth). I needed a dentist in NYC so I turned to none other than YELP for assistance. He was able to get me in for an exam and cleaning within 3 days of calling and then was able to schedule me in for some follow up work the next day! They didn't take my insurance, but my insurance covers out of network equally, and his office staff was more than happy to file the paper work for me. He explained to me, as I was lying down on the tempur pedic padded exam chair, that with patients, he tries to put himself in their shoes. But he actually took this to heart. He and his staff took time to clearly explain every single procedure to me, the tools that they were using (even the scrappers, picks--plastic vs metal--and other inane details) and were very aware of how comfortable or uncomfortable I was. The hygenist, Rosalind, who has over 30 years of experience, puts a topical analgesic on your gums before the cleaning and exam, just to make the process a bit less painful (literally). He utilizes all of the modern gadgets like digital photos, digital x rays and charts, laser tooth analysis (to check for cavities, instead of a dental pick), and ozone (non-invasive, for treating cavities?). The freebies were great and real. Glide floss, a real oral B tooth brush, an oral B flossing tool (he highly recommends over floss), colgate toothpaste and, for my sensitive teeth, a 4 month's supply of MI paste--a recalcifiying agent that helps to cure sensitive teeth, which is $25 online, by itself. They do free invisalign consultations as well (take impressions, ship to invisalign, get results)--a procedure most DDS's charge for. Dr. Silver is a jazz trumpet player and plays the likes of Miles Davis and others off his ipod in the office. WOW WOW WOW. What's the worst part about going to the dentist you ask? PAIN I respond. You feel the grind of a drill on the inside of a molar, the splitting crack as a tooth is pulled out of your mouth, and the mind numbing twinge as your teeth are scraped, pushed, and pulled. At Dr. Silver's office, you get NONE of those terrible things. He gets you "profoundly numb" as he loves to say. Once you're there, sit back and enjoy the smooth jazz as Dr. Silver does what he does with the most up to date technology. He has an outstanding staff who are helpful, genial, and overall a pleasure to deal with. On top of that, Dr. Silver is always learning more! He has told me multiple times that the new numbing, technique, filling, etc. was learned just recently at a conference or seminar. Here is a man who does not use the knowledge of the 80's, but the knowledge of NOW to really provide top quality care. One specific thing to point out is his use of an Ozone wax. BEWARE. These good reviews are absolutley a smoke screen. Do NOT get anything done here. I can't say too much as I am trying to figure out my next move, but I've had 3 dentist tell me my previous dental work was done poorly and now, after spending thousands of dollars with Dr. Silver I will have to spend another thousands to get this problem fixed. I tried emailing his office to talk about this and no response. I know at this moment someone who had work done as well that sounds scarely similar to the other 1 star review given 5 years ago. Chilling. My dental health is essential to my livelyhood and job. I don't make much money, can't express the horrifying grief that this dentist has caused me. I am losing sleep at night trying to find out how in the world I will be able to afford something I trusted Dr. silver to fix once and for all. I am going to try and get some answers, but my ignored emails and stories from other people make me terrified that I will not get any justice out of my situation and be out thousands of dollars. I went to Dr. Silver after being without a dentist in the city for far too long (don't ask how long). I was recommended by a friend and co-worker who noted that he takes our insurance. I am SO GLAD that I went to Dr. Silver! Before this experience, I can honestly say that I HATED the dentist. I hated the drilling and the pain and most of all, I hated the judgement. I've inherited pretty weak teeth, even though I take very good care of them, plus I grind HARD, so dentists are always quick to denounce my behavior, even when I follow all of their directions. Not Dr. Silver. I went in the first time because I was having terrible neck and jaw problems. I feared that maybe a tooth had become so infected that it had spread elsewhere (as I've heard tales of). He did an X-Ray and told me nothing was infected, just that my constant grinding (exacerbated by anxiety from my recent move to the city) was straining my jaw muscles. He consulted with me about options, going so far as to list the prices out, with and without insurance coverage, and letting me choose what I thought was the best treatment based on his information and advice. As Dr. Silver likes to say "I don't work on you, I work with you." That seems to be the general philosophy of the entire office. They tell you exactly what's going to happen, offer you options if they exist and never fail to deliver on what they promise. I got a bite-guard based on Dr. Silver's recommendation and my neck and face problems are NON EXISTANT. Moreover, the encouragement of the hygenist has my gums and flossing routine in better shape than they've ever been - you really WANT to impress them every time you go in because they're so encouraging. I highly recommend Dr. Silver and his practice. They are kind, honest, pain-averse (unless the cirumstances are extreme, I've had minor cavities and holes treated with a drill alternative that's FAR preferable to rote drilling). Plus, they play awesome jazz in the office and I hear Dr. Silver can bust out some tunes himself. All in all - go here. read more

I am totally and utterly speechless which is rare for me, I will admit, but in a good way. It is also very rare that I go into the office of a dentist and leave smiling and happy and this is exactly what happened. I have a dentist phobia. I'd rather get routine surgery before I'd have to go a dental routine/procedure. But for years, I've heard so many good things about this particular dentist but already had in my mind that all dentists are alike: "pain freaks". A majority of those with whom I work with goes to Dr. Silver and I thought to myself that that must mean something good. So let me give him a try... I had to get my upper mouth/gum numbed and I dreaded that because I picture in my mind the kind of needle that I am used to getting: those big, long, ancient and thick needles. But no. What he did was gently applied a gel like substance to numb the areas that was going to get the needle. That was awesome. Then when it was time for the real anesthetic via the needle, I braced myself for the worst, or what I thought would be the worst. Boy was I WRONG. He showed me a little, itty, bitty needle I could hardly see with my eyes, lol. It was almost transparent, so minute. That eased me a bit, but when he stuck my gums, I didn't even know until I asked. Then while needle was still in my gum, he used this small massaging device or mechanism on my outer lip to distract me from feeling pain, which was NONE! I didn't feel a thing, do you all hear what I said? Then he offered me shades to wear under the glaring lights of both the lamp and his eye-wear. I was totally impressed and comfortable that I dozed off a bit and even while the drill was in progress. He is one of the friendliest, professional, most gentle and pleasant dentists I've ever encountered. In addition, I can't leave out his staff! Lisa-Lisa (not her real name; it's Lisa) and the hygienist, I forgot her name and I guess what would be the dental assistant working alongside Dr. Silver (I forgot her name too) were so sweet and accommodating with me the whole time. They made me feel sooooooooooooo comfortable. I was even offered a BLANKET because it was so cold and I was cold but I got through it. The ambiance in the office, the cleanliness, openness of the examination rooms, and let's not forget the jazz tunes just made me feel so at ease. I just have to say that I am terrified of the dentist, to the point where I've avoided it for years. I searched for a dentist that would do sedation (i had a broken tooth- and there was NO way I was going to be coherent for this procedure) - and Dr. Silver (aka The Jazz Dentist) came up. The testimonials on the site were great and I made an appointment. Best dentist experience ever!! Dr. Silver was super nice and made me feel really comfortable. I don't remember a thing from the procedure, which is what I wanted! I had a sedative drug and nitrous, and went through a 3-hour procedure, and came out of it with minimal pain - just a little soreness for a couple days. When a crown including the tooth pop out after eating DOTS, you feel as if the world will be over. Oh and add to that you have no dental insurance! I checked out my friends' referrals and their respective locations, but ultimately I chose Dr. Silver and I am glad I did. Let me mention his office; it is in a low key section of the village, very lovely. Dr. Silver was very thorough and all their equipment/tools are cutting edge. He did not hesitate to refer me to an excellent oral surgeon when I needed one, nor to another specialist for a 2nd opinion if I so desired. In a city so large with quantity but various levels of quality, I was pleased to find him. The staff is pleasant and the dental hygienist I had was the best! She was very experienced (plus, her teeth were perfect). I credit her with getting me to floss b/c she explained the whole deal with flossing so well but without any pressure. This is simply an excellent practice from top to bottom. I have been a patient for almost 8 years and the quality and attention has been fantastic and consistent the whole time. The practice has helped me with everything from routine cleaning, to root canals as well as cosmetic procedures. My experience started with Dr. Silver when I had an emergency and was in significant pain but had no current dentist. I got his name via a very strong recommendation. He fit me in right away and he was everything that recommendation claimed he would be. It has been great work ever since. The doctors and the staff are all friendly, helpful, and very patient. It is a relaxed but professional atmosphere. You are always comfortable and they are great at making you feel at ease. It is a practice where they recognize you by name (everyone - not just the front desk) when you walk in. I see this both for me but also consistently for other patients. They do all the big things very well but they also focus on a lot of little things that help make a difference. Whether it is shaded glasses to wear during procedures or techniques to reduce pain for injections. They are a practice that strives to improve and I always appreciate the care I get. They are mindful of my time and make it easier on me by utilizing text messages for appointments and will be proactive with my schedule by contacting me day of - to let me know if thing are running late or if I have the opportunity to come in earlier. I really appreciate this attention to efficiency and it always helps with the use of my time. Also as a very nice touch, after a few more complicated procedures, Dr. Silver has personally called after the appointment to check up on me. It is a practice that takes personal service and comfort very seriously. I went to Dr. Silver for about a year. My first two visits were great. He was very nice, the staff was very friendly. The one thing that bothered me a bit was his constant referral to replacing my porcelain fillings with gold fillings. Gold fillings are, of course, much more expensive at close to $2,000 a pop. I didn't think much of it until I had to have a crown done. The initial cost after insurance was not unsurprising but did dent my bank account. It cost close to $1,000. Not 6 months later, the crown broke. When I went in to have it fixed Dr. Silver seemed annoyed that his work was still under warranty meaning he would have to fix it at no cost. He even insisted that I must have done something to it by eating sticky candy (which I don't it). I replied that my other porcelain fillings done by my old dentist have lasted years without issue. He replied that if i had gotten gold it wouldn't have broken. Ridiculous. Fast forward 1 year and the crown broke. Again. Needless to say I went to a different dentist at the Exchange Dental Group who is absolutely wonderful, professional and competent. read more

This isn't just my dentist. These people are like family to me at this point! I've been going to Dr Silver since maybe 2005-2006? It was back when they were in their small office space near Washington Square Park. It's been a joy seeing them gain popularity and grow so much over the years. They deserve it!!! I never, ever dread going to the dentist. I love seeing everyone there when I come in and catching up! I got my Invisalign done here and Roz was unbelievable during my whole treatment. I love her. She is so caring about her patients--- she wants everyone to feel good about themselves as a result of good dental care! I've also seen Roz take a more prominent role in the practice over the years and am really happy to see that, too. She is fantastic and always concerned about your comfort. She is always gentle when handling your teeth and her friendly, open nature distracts you every time you have to get your cleaning! As for the office in general, everyone there is outstanding! Friendly, willing to help, so nice....I can't say good enough things about them. And the atmosphere is awesome. Jazz music piping in the background--- as Dr Silver himself is a jazz musician who frequently plays in the city. He is really an amazing, talented guy all-around! I think I've referred about a dozen people to go here over the years and I won't stop doing that anytime soon. They're the best dental practice in NYC. Hands-down! Dr. Silver is just amazing. I have terrible teeth and am extremely sensitive to pain. When my former dentist told me that I needed to get a couple of implants and then described the procedure to me I was horrified and basically did my best imitation of an ostrich putting her head in the sad. I'm not even sure if it was the time or pain that bothered me the most. Then I went to see Dr. Silver for a free consultation. He mentioned the idea of mini implants and I decided to try one. It was incredible. There were a grand total of two visits. On the first visit Dr. Silver took an impression and on the second visit he did the entire procedure in less than an hour. THE ENTIRE PROCEDURE! I couldn't believe it. I have had more visits and definitely more pain from a simple filling. I went to his office, spent a pleasantly fuzzy pain free hour, and left with a new tooth. It was by far the best experience I have ever had at the dentist and I would definitely go back. read more

He cares not only about how you feel while he does his work, not only about how you feel after but also about the quality of the work he performs. As an "alternative" dentist he stands out as exemplary of the finest around, and believe me I know ( i know just about everyone in the NY area). His knowledge and expertise with ozone in dentistry permits him to do more and do it better than most dentists who claim knowledge in that area of dentistry. First time visiting Dr. Silver. Initially was going in to get a quick check on a crack crown. Due to insurance issues, I decided to hold off but asked about getting cavities filled. To my amazement, Dr. Silver was able to fill the decay without any drilling or use of local anesthesia. He was also very patient in explaining me how and why it works. I love Dr. Silver's office!!! He has been our dentist for about 5 years, and we couldn't be happier. Dr. Silver is amazing -- he is thorough, honest, reliable, and always does whatever he can to make his patients have an easy, pain-free experience. He has done a couple of fillings for me, and they were the easiest procedures ever! Literally no pain at all, and super quick. If you ever have an urgent issue, you can text Dr. Silver and he responds right away. I once had a couple issues after a procedure while I was traveling for work, and he texted back and forth with me during the trip -- even texting me a day or two later to make sure everything was okay. Now... let me talk about Roz!!! She is the BEST! I believe her role is dental hygienist (I could be wrong about her title, I'm not sure), and she has always been a huge part of my experience with Dr. Silver. Honestly, I wish she was also my doctor and my therapist, because that's how much I like and trust her. She is SO knowledgable, caring, and her calm personality makes getting a teeth cleaning a breeze. She has taught me a lot over the years, not just about dental health, but about health overall (and a lot of crossover -- how maintaining your overall health affects your dental health). I'm a huge P*SSY when it comes to dentists, but the Doc was patient, described all the procedures, options and pricing (no sales pitches) and were able to fit me in short notice. Dr. Siver's techniques and calming nature eased all anxiety. Pricing is actually really good, I use to go to two dentists a few blocks away who charged 1/3 more.
