They tasted brilliant and I ended up having some hot dogs. I have also brought some chicken legs and thighs from here and used them to make a Thai Green Chicken curry. Again the chicken itself was excellent and I have no doubts I will be back. I do have to travel some way to get to Handsworth from West Bromwich but it is worth the travelling because I know I am guaranteed quality food from here. Staff are excellent which makes this place even better.

I've…read moregot to be honest and admit that I've always watched the hustle and bustle of the markets in Birmingham from a safe distance. However, having a young family and in these financially challenged times, I thought I should bite the bullet and give it a go as an actual customer, rather than mere browser. Being the coward that I am, I went with my Mum for moral support. She knows what to look for when buying meat and veg. In these days of cellophane packaged supermarket goods, the market produce can seem very daunting. After some hints from Mum and watching her in action, I went for it at A P Doherty's. I wanted to write this review to recommend them because of the amazing deal we got. I think Ryan (the guy behind the counter) mistook my hesitancy for reluctance to spend, whereas I was trying to work out what he was talking about and whether I was getting good value. There are loads of butchers and poultry specialists but these guys gave great value. I got so much chicken and gammon for £20 that the bag burst carrying it to the car.

The first organic butchers in Birmingham (I remember it being a big deal!) the quality is superb. I always found their cuts to be good and never heard any complaints from anyone else either. Their various sausages were my breakfast choice, absolutely delicious! I have it on good authority that this is still the case and the fact that they are still going strong after all of these years is testament to the fact too. The quality of their meat is second to none - thye were Birmingham's first organic butchers and are still (i believe) the only butchers in Birmingham to be registered with The Soil Association. you can tell how popular and good they are by the huge queues which can be seen over Xmas when people are queuing up to collect their turkeys/beef/(insert here whatever meat people eat for Xmas!). Its also worth noting that you can order your Xmas products online. Whenever ive gone in the service has always been very cheery - even when theyve been packed to the rafters, and the staff are always willing to give advice on how long to cook things for, best cuts of meat etc. The meat we have had from here has always been superb, if, like i said earlier, somewhat pricey - but lets face it, you pay for good quality. Definitely worth a visit when you have some spare cash floating around!

The service wasn't great, I waited for what seemed an eternity for service and when it came it felt that it was a laboured effort. I asked a few questions on how to cook my meat, but didn't receive much help in response. I do love the Classic Meats bike outside, but City Meats is my butchers preference.

A refrigerator van on the corner of the outdoor market might be initially off-putting, but bear with me while I relate the tale of dear of Mickey M... So, I have lived in the Jewellery Quarter for around... Ohhh... 7/8 years now. When I first moved in my budget was majorly overstretched (working a shop job on minimum wage) so shopping on Birmingham Markets was really my only viable choice to actually get some fruit, veg and meat on the plate 7 days a week. We (me and the other half) very quickly came across Mick's van on the corner of the market (opposite the Bullring Tavern). For a bargainous £10 note, Mick furnished us with chicken breasts, steak, pork chops, lamb chops, a pack of bacon and sausages. All of the meat was great quality and ever since that first encounter we have been firm fans. We now tend to go for a £20 bundle and get much the same (except with the occasional bit of stewing steak, chicken portions and whole chickens in the mix). Just £20 tends to sort us out for meat for around 6 weeks (keeping in mind we have at least two vegetarian meals in a week). A trip to see Mick is always like visiting an old friend. If you haven't been back for a while he will enquire as to what you've been up to (in a friendly way, not a pushy one), ask how life's going and let you know about any new or exciting stock he's managed to lay his hands on. We've had everything from Turkey crowns the size of your head to duck breasts from him in the past and it's always been great quality at a great price. If you're looking for something to BBQ, he offers set packages at a set price but state your budget and let him know what you're looking for he will set you up with the best deal you can get. Don't get me wrong, you can certainly get a wider selection in the Indoor markets; but if you're looking to buy meat for a family you won't find better value than Mick The Meat and his big white van.

The shop was very busy which was a good sign and looked clean from the outside. I wasn't sure about the meat being in the front window even though it was in a covered glass case however that was my only quibble. The guys behind the counter were all very helpful and polite and the final bill although high was about average for what I bought. On cooking the bacon and sausages I was quite happy to see no manky white stuff came out the bacon and was happy with the taste. The sausages I was a bit disappointed with as the casing was quite tough. Still, not bad. The Sunday roast was brilliant. No shrinkage and the meat was tender and juicy. So this butcher is recommended, but I'll stick to my usual one.
