This shop has been a fixture of the Cotteridge High Street map for as long as I can remember…read more Immediately recognisable as an old school butchers by the red, draping awning hanging from the shopfront, this is the sort of butchers shop we'll all miss when and if they eventually succumb to the financial might of the big supermarkets. On weekends the queue can snake around the small customer area of the shop, which tells you about it's local popularity and the quality of the service. The meat is usually of a high quality and there are often some interesting seasonal offerings in the window display to tempt you off the high street - their pre-prepared BBQ meats being a good seller. Prices are reasonable and the service is exactly what you'd expect from a long-established local butcher. Good stuff!

It's a surprise therefore that it can support two independent, family-run butchers shops. This one is slightly better than the Peter Gumbley outlet around the corner on Pershore Road and also doubles as a deli, with a fair selection of meats and cheeses. This place starts and finishes earlier than its rival around the corner, and if you go in after 3pm you are more than likely to find them clearing up for the day as they close at 4pm. All in all, though, a very good butchers.

The prices are moderate, if not a little pricey, but that does not bother me as I know that the meat is fresh and is of a high standard. It is also very clean and tidy inside, which is a good sign for me. There has also always been a queue when I have been in which shows the popularity of the place. Overall, I think that this butchers is worth a visit if you live locally or are just passing through.

It really is like a rural village in the 1950s, and you'd be forgiven for forgetting that you are in the middle of the 2nd largest city in the UK. Aside from the architecture and general ambience, Sycamore Road boasts a superb cake shop and this butchers. Russells is an old school meat emporium that befits its surroundings perfectly. It's a butchers from a bygone age, where the staff know their meat and will happily discuss the best cuts to buy. They also do a selection of meat pies and cheeses that are worth investigating.

This place really has a local vibe about it; it is always full of local people who know the man (on first name terms too) that runs the store, people place regular orders here and they always greet everyone with a smile and ask how you are. I usually get a few lamb chops, chicken and eggs from here and although it can be quite pricey, I think it is better to pay a little more for fresh produce than the poorer quality of meat sold in supermarkets - plus, this way I can support a local, independent business! The service is good in here and I have never had to wait too long, even when it is busy. I highly recommend this butcher if you live nearby.

Breakfast Review: I…read moredo like an Indi deli. In fact I love an Indi deli. So much so that this morning, I cycled in heavy rain and a blustery wind, 17.5 miles to try out their breakfast. I was recommended this place by some of the fine people on Twitter. Their enthusiasm for the place meant I had to give it a go. It's a small shop in a group of shops on a residential road in suburban Bournville. There's no uniforms, just people that obviously care about their products and produce. That definitely included their breakfasts. Perfectly cooked bacon, (2 slices, not one as advertised), 2 sausages, a spot on golden yolked egg, a choice of plum or fresh tomatoes, great black pudding, (an extra), baked beans, (served in a separate dish), a good portion of fresh mushrooms and hand cut, crusty bread - as far as I'm concerned, a MUST for a quality breakfast - which this absolutely was. Coffee was good quality too, not too rich, just how I like it. In summary: 9/10 one of the best ones I've had. Excellent.
