    Walter Smith Birmingham - Pies

    Walter Smith Birmingham

With shops all over the Midlands, Walter Smiths is one of only a handful of butchers in Harborne -…read moreI must admit that as a rather sensitive, vegetarian child I would refuse to go into this shop until relatively recently - but if you like decent cuts of meat and want to buy a lot of it then Walter Smiths is the place to go. As well as offering 'award winning' sausages - including a black pudding variety that is really very tasty (my sensitive, vegetarian days are very much over) they have a hot meat counter with sumptuous pies, pork and stuffing baps and chicken legs. They also do vegetable packs - think turnips, spuds and leeks for hearty casseroles or carrots, onions and peas for wholesome stews and they sell seasoning and sauces to go with most cuts of meat. You can order your turkey from them at Christmas and they are happy to offer tips on cooking chops, steaks etc.

There are a handful of Walter Smith outlets around Brum and it's always a reassuring sight to see…read morethe familiar sign on a High Street. The Walter Smith outlet has been supplying me with animal flesh for over a decade, and since the main supermarkets in Harborne are now a Waitrose (which used to be a Safeway when I first moved there) and a Marks and Spencer, Smiths provides one of the only ways of getting your meat fix in B17 without re-mortgaging your house. The staff are friendly and helpful and, as you'd expect from a long-established butcher, they know their meat. They have a hot plate selection, too, which is dangerously tempting (and smells great) when you're on a mooching trip on the Harborne High Street.

Most of the meat is prepared on the premises and they even make their own sausages from time to time. Their beef and lamb mince is always of a really high quality, as you will see when you cook it and hardly any fat is created. Their best product, though, is their bacon, which is thick and very, very tasty. They also carry a selection of pies and pasties, smoked cheeses, plus sauces and condiments for cooking meat. In the summer they do an excellent range of meats for use on the BBQ. At Christmas and Easter time the queue is often out the door, and the shop is often busy on Saturday mornings, which should tell you that this is a place much admired by the locals round these parts. This is well worth a visit.

Before I start this review I should let you know that I know squat about butchers. However, if I've…read morelearned one thing over the years from various trips with my dad, it's that a good butcher has to be friendly; in fact they have to be positively jolly. That is certainly the case at G.A Lockhart where the staff provide such great interaction with the customers that it seems like something from the distant past, when high streets weren't clogged up with a thousand stores each an exact replica of the last. This is the butcher whom my family have used for years and I can confirm that every Sunday a piece of Lockhart meat has graced our table and satisfied a demanding family of brummies. I don't really know the price of meats etc, I mean as a student the closest thing I usually get to meat is a late night kebab, but Lockhart certainly seems reasonable and they provide good produce. A refreshingly friendly establishment with some delicious British meat on offer.

I really like the cuts of belly draft they do at this butchers. Even though the pre packed meats…read morethey sell are not to my taste (I had a bad chicken from here before, looked like a boiler) I must say that the belly draft is extremely good. They will score the skin so you get really good crackling, the rest is down to how you cook it. The butcher was quite informative, he told me that belly draft should always be cooked at a low temperature as to not burn and carbonize the fat under the skin. This has a bad effect on the flavour and the quality of the gravy. I really appreciated all of the help I received from the butcher here. They also sell some pretty decent sausages from here, home made varieties the bang in the pan with a devilish ferocity. Recommended.

The main reason for this is that, until fairly recently, I didn't even know there was another Roger Brown outlet in the area. Having recently discovered the joys of Pickles Pantry, a few doors down from this store, I have taken to using this outlet as well. Browns are excellent butchers - really knowledgable, friendly, approachable and offer great value for money. Some butchers are content to punt out meat of fair to middling quality, but that's not the case here. Really, really good produce at great prices. Use this place instead of your local supermarket and you will not be disappointed.

Ah, Waitrose. Land of the daily free tea and coffee, home of frozen game and Duchy products…read more The Harborne Waitrose is smallish, as they often are, but it still has pretty much everything you'd need to do a full shop- if you don't mind it being a bit more expensive. They started price- matching brand products a while back though, and the Waitrose Essentials stuff is pretty good- and top quality. I digress. This Waitrose has two tea and coffee machines, near the entrance, so I frequently pop in for my free beverage. It also has a pretty decent cheese counter, deli, butcher and fish counter. It also does rotisserie chickens, which are soooo good. I really rate the wine selection too- with a good sized section of both everyday and special occasion wines (the occasion could just be that you bought some nice wine, of course). Generally it's a great place to shop. Staff are super friendly, polite and helpful. If you're clumsy like me, they won't charge you for breakages either... It's also not so big that you get lost, and I like to think about how I'll buy all those fancy biscuits when I'm rich.

I do have to say the quality of waitrose food is very very very good!!!!! This store has very friendly staff who are willing to help and sow you to where a product is kept. The store is well organised and stocked, i guess there isnt much to criticise really in regards to the store. The car park outside isn't huge and fills up very quickly especially on weekends. But its free for 1.5 hours which is a good bonus. This store also has scanners so you can scan your shopping as you go around the store and hand in your scanner at the checkout for easier payment. Overall it has very fresh food, meat, veg and fruit. very efficient, its clean and the store is just the right size, not too big and not too small.
