Another thing a good news agents needs is a rapport with the local community and I believe the owner of Selly Acre news has managed to achieve just that. He is a friendly and helpful owner who will always be prepared to strike up a conversation with his customers. As far as what is on offer here, well it is a fairly bog standard news agents with milk and bread through to sweets, everything you would expect to find at an establishment such as this. They occasionally have a few DVD's on offer but the choice is limited and the films are an eclectic mix to say the least.

As you enter the store, you'll be greeted by their Market Kitchen area where food counters are available offering a rotational daily selection of hot dishes, pizza and a couple of other options alongside the regular Morrisons Cafe offering. The facilities inside the store are good and also include Amazon Lockers. The selection in terms of groceries was reasonable. Prices were competitive but did seem fairly expensive for some items including Cravendale Milk, even out pricing some convenience stores in Birmingham city centre. When I first visited this sandwich shop, I came away thinking that their choice was a bit poor, and their prices were unnecessarily high. Having given them another chance a couple of years later, I know that the opposite is now the case. They now stock an extensive selection of hot and cold food, including pastries, quesadillas, jacket spuds and more, all priced favourably when compared to much of the surrounding area. To address the point made by the previous reviewer, while the staff are certainly not from Britain originally, I'd hardly call what they speak "broken English". Either they've gotten rid of whoever was rude to that person, or maybe I'm just lucky. They've never gotten my order wrong, and have always been very polite to me.

Although they are more known for their sweets, they should still have high quality, tasty food for their other food items. I remember the stigma that was attached to discount supermarkets when I was younger and the shame of having "non branded" crisps in your lunchbox at school, well, I certainly feel that a lot has changed and these stores are now a viable option to get great quality, cheaper food (and drink) options. This branch is actually my favourite. I know, it's weird having a favourite branch of Aldi, but when we can't get to market on a weekend we have a plethora of Aldi's and Lidl's around us to choose from. This one (just by Cannon Hill park) is always tidy, clean and tends to have the items we need in stock (rather than other branches which seem to run out of things). I always find it really funny to see how many Mercedes, Jag's and high end cars are parked in the car park of this branch. Clearly the discount supermarket is no longer a taboo! As well as the usual choice of fruit, veg and meat you will find lots of speciality items here. With everything from award winning wines and champagnes to a great selection of baking paraphernalia and season items in stock, if you're anything like me you'll usually spend more than you bargained for! Again, this is my favourite branch of Aldi in Birmingham. If you are looking for a way to cut down the cost of the weekly shop or just get a picnic in before visiting Cannon Hill, you could do much worse than popping in and seeing what these guys have in stock.

But in all seriousness Aldi really has managed to shake off the stigma it once had by continuing to stock good quality items at slightly lower prices than the big supermarkets. Especially with the 'super 6' offers and weekly offers on meat that often beat the big supermarkets measly 20p off by a country mile. Aldi is great for the vast majority of things but it's quite rare that we can do an entire weekly shop there, unfortunately some items we can only get at our local supermarket that shall remain nameless. That being said their selection of beers is great (and lets face it, it's what we're all here for!), with several ales, weissbier, pilsner and a few other bits and pieces as well all coming in at £1.25 or less per bottle - bargain! Just make sure you take some carrier bags to reuse, they will charge you!

I have never gone in wanting something and not come out with it. There's everything from socks to steak, apples to zucchini! The bread selection is pretty good tho the quality might leave something to be desired when you compare to the likes of Peel and Stone. I can normally pick up a decent sour-dough. There's also plenty of sell by date stuff, everything from yoghurt to large lamb joints. The self-serve section is irritating as there is only one way in and out rather than an obvious entry and exit. They have a geezer keeping hold of the bags and handing you one or two if needed. This all equals an unnecessary delay I'd rather not have to deal with. I buy less stuff and put what I do buy in my small backpack instead. I'd rate it highly for selection and bargain opportunities from the sell-by date stuff, and if you learn where stuff is and can check out quickly then it's hassle and stress-free!

The pros are that if you need a pint of milk, snacks or general essentials then you are in luck. The place stays open until about 8pm too when other stores are closed. Overall the owners could be friendlier and if redecorated would be a better place.
