I guess it comes with the territory of being part of a shopping mall setting, but something is missing once you step inside the restaurant. So a friend of mine raved about this spot and it sure did not disappoint! The food was spectacular! Upon entering the restaurant you are greeted by a hostess and taken to a booth. I opened up the menu and saw a huge variety of spicy and non spicy dishes that looked authentic and delicious! For appetizer we ordered the dry fried eggplant which was so tasty. It was large fry shaped wedges of eggplant fried to a perfect crisp and seasoned with tasty garlic spice and garnished with ultra hot dried chili peppers. For entrees the 3 of us shared dry fried string beans, shrimp and scallop stir fry and twice fried pork. The dry fried string beans were the best out of 3! They were flavorful, moist and spicy! The twice fried pork came with a lot of leeks and had a nice soy marinade flavor. The shrimp and scallops were super spicy and sautéed with vegetables and peanuts. The service was phenomenal! I wasn't sure what to expect coming here since I've had bad experiences in the past with Chinese restaurants outside of major cities simply because they aren't authentic and bring an Americanized twist to their menu to accommodate for the locals. It's a solid game plan for doing good business to cater to local tastes but I feel it takes away the opportunity to try different cuisines at their truest form. Luckily Peter Chang is authentic to Sichuan cuisine. It's as good, if not better than many of the restaurants located in New York City. Excellent food, large pours of booze, ok service, strange decor, horrible music for a Chinese restaurant!! We had a comical moment when the staff couldn't figure out how to lay a round table for 4 but they made up for it with a free app which was a nice gesture. What I can tell you is that the food is the real deal in terms of spice, garlic, and a little too much salt. Prices are reasonable also and the pours are very large! When I brought my Peking duck home the skin and meat were all rubbery, and the General Taos chicken was over breaded and tasted over sugary with no crunch!! Got a recommendation from a family member for Peter Chang. Apparently they make some of my hometown food so we came here after skiing. Doupi was what I was looking for as I came from Wuhan China. It was decent, not a fantastic one as compared to my standard back home but was good enough. And it seems to be the only place nearby that offers it, no complaint. We also got their Peking duck. Pretty good. The duck can be a little bit more fatty but the pancakes were well-made. The portion was also good. The vegetables with tofu skin, Changqing spicy fried chicken and the steamed ribs were my favorites. Very authentic though not as spicy. The flavors were mostly right. The dry pot with prawns and the pumpkin cake with red bean filling were ok. Not that tasty and the tastes were Americanized so I don't enjoy them as much. Great service and the owner was a great man. I was told this restaurant used to have more Wuhanese food but they were removed due to localization issues. 4 star overall but a bonus star for hometown representation. read more

5 stars because bamboo flounder and twiced cooked pork were very very good, and I'll definitely be eating here more. Only thing I can say is that the whole boneless fish was really dry/overcooked when I got it for takeout. I don't know why that might have been, but it really just wasn't very pleasant to eat. Sadly, probably too authentic for Stamford tastes. This is a legitimate Chinese restaurant which tastes like actual Sichuan food vs the standard Americanized fare. From the light numbing sensation of the Sichuan peppers (rare to find outside of Chinese areas) to how well prepared the dry fried eggplants are, this is an accomplished restaurant. Every dish I've ordered here has come out tasting the authentic and that might be the issue with this restaurant in the Stamford area. Trust Sichuan flavors might be off putting to people who are expecting the equivalent of PF Chang flavors (highly sweetened Americanized Chinese dishes) when they come in. That said, try this restaurant if you want to taste what Sichuan Chinese food tastes like. Keep an open mind and you will probably enjoy the change in flavors. read more

Ok here's the long and short of it. Peter Chang's is not only the best Chinese restaurant I've been to in CT but ranks up there with the great ones in New York as well. The main menu has Peter Chang's specialties which are so good and there's a separate special menu that is exceptional as well. Favorites include, Xaio Long Boa soup dumplings, Dou Miao stir fried pea shoots w/ garlic, Peking Duck or Qilin boneless duck breast, Roasted mushrooms curry stew, Dragon eggplant w/ spicy garlic and Stir Fry Bok Choy w/ bean curd skin etc. Peter Chang has a cult like following of foodies and a very interesting back story you can read about in newspapers and magazines including CT Magazine. Five big stars for the high quality and authenticity of the food at Peter Chang's. Three to four stars for the ambiance - which is purely functional in this slightly modified, former California Pizza Kitchen space. The sensational menu, however, outweighs anything disappointing about the worn decor. This is by far the best Chinese food in Stamford. It's so good, we keep returning to try new dishes. (I dined there six or seven times in the first month after it opened.) Let me emphasize that this is not your typical neighborhood Chinese restaurant with Americanized dishes, mild flavors, and sticky sweet sauces. Come prepared for bold flavors, sizzling preparations, and creative, yet traditionally prepared dishes. This is a place to be adventurous. The dinner portions are large enough to share. Their lunch specials are smaller and seem well priced to me. Though the selection of lunch specials is fairly limited, the full dinner menu is available at lunch. Enjoy! read more

This is a new restaurant that I believe will be very successful! Hard to find a "high-end" Chinese place but this is one. The restaurant has a spacious open floor plan with a circular bar facing a TV. Tea is served in fancy, heavy stone teapots and even the brown rice is special and looks more pink than brown (I think because it may have had some red bean in it?) Ordered many things but my favorite was the Peking duck! Comes with a beautiful vibrant pink dipping sauce that I have never had before (since it's a Peter Chang specialty); it is made with rose petal and garlic. Be prepared to drink a lot of water because the food is deliciously spicy (true to its Szechuan style). The dessert was delicious; somehow even the strawberry and mango ice cream was better than your average ice cream. And the pumpkin/red bean balls were incredible. Everything is constructed lovingly and presented beautifully. Obviously the Peking Duck is a highlight - only Peter Chang would include a rose petal garlic sauce along with your usual fixings, done well. Another must-order is the Jingzhou Fish Cakes, delicately arranged in a delicious broth. The Scallion Bubble Pancake would be fun for any kids tagging along, Thousand Layer Veggie Roll for yummy lotus flavor, and the Red Bean Pumpkin Cake an excellent end for anyone who likes sesame balls as much as my family does. Came here for lunch during the work day and loved it! Our server was courteous and clearly knew her way around the way. We ordered the vegetable spring rolls and the scallion bubble pancake. As fun as the scallion bubble pancake was to eat, it lacked in flavor compared to a normal scallion pancake. For my entree I had the Mongolian beef and the side of brown rice - it was very delicious! This place is so special. You have to be patient when it first opens. We were huge regulars at the Charlottesville location after it first opened and the first few weeks can be a little strange: wrong food coming, some confusion but the food is dynamite. What not to miss: Dry fried eggplant is amazing as are the bubble pancakes and the shredded tofu skin.
