Usually when someone at Petco tells me they are an "aquatic specialist" I tend to brush them off given past experiences. My 8 year old is more of an "aquatic specialist" than most of the people I have encountered. However, the "aquatic specialist"- Riley- at this particular Petco location rightly deserves the title. Her knowledge of aquariums and fish supplies is superior. I love when I see someone passionate about their work. Not only is she intelligent and knowledgeable, she has an outgoing personality and genuinely cares about giving novice aquatic life buyers, like myself, the best materials to ensure that my kid's African Dwarf Frogs can live their best lives. Walked into Petco, Wheaton, looking to buy dog food. Had just come from PetSmart where they were out of stock. Unlike PetSmart, as I walked in at Petco, two male employees walked past me not saying a word, such as hello or can I help you. I looked around the store for what I wanted to purchase but could not find it. I did see an older gentleman counting goldfish but he looked far to busy to help me! I finally walked up to the cashier, some young female, who was sitting up on the counter playing with her cell phone. I asked if they had the product I wanted. She said "nope" and went right back playing with her cell phone. I walked out. No wonder PetSmart is so much busier. They had two registers going while Petco, right around the corner, had no one in the store. I will never shop at Petco again. read more

Lesly at Petco did a terrible grooming job. Our Australian Shepherd doesn't even look like an Australian Shepherd. I spoke with her intensely and showed her a picture of how he should look. I even told her we don't want a buzz cut and that's exactly what she did. I was so shocked at his appearance when I picked him up I didn't know what to say. I just wanted to get our dog home. A professional groomer should know how an Australian Shepherd should look. She shaved his for so short in the back it was red. Of course, they have you pay first, and I regret giving a tip. Our dog's fur will grow back. However, due to inexperience and inability to listen, we will never take our dog back to Petco grooming. read more

I have have my pet groomed at Petco twice. I have a 9 pound Yorkie Maltese mix. The first time the groomer buzzed him pretty short because he was matted. I didn't like it, but figured it was necessary. The second time, the groomer shaved him pretty bald. No fur. This seems to be a lack of skill. I will never go back there. I didn't complain - I was too shocked and was trying to stay calm - and I left a good tip. But never again. I shouldn't have even been charged for what I got. Don't take your dog here! read more

I've always been a Petsmart person but moving to the area, I was recommended Sydney as a dog trainer. I came in to book training with her and I am not disappointed. She has been great with my dog. I have booked another series of classes now with both my dogs. The employees here are super friendly, I feel you dont get that at large box pet stores. Also the petco rewards are pretty awesome. Overall, the prices at the Petsmart around the corner are cheaper but the divine customer service here is worth 5 stars. This Petco has some great specialty items and a better selection of pet bedding than Petsmart but the real winner here is the employee who was helping me locate some special pet goodies that day. I believe his name is Dan, and he searched the store high and low and called on other employees for suggestions as they didn't carry exactly what I was looking for. The good news is, we got two cool gerbils. The children are surprisingly responsible in meeting their needs, and I think it's a good empathy lesson overall. Since their allergies preclude us from having cats or dogs, this is the best we can do for the time being. The bad news is, we were sold only one gerbil initially. The little guy hung out in the upper deck of the snap-together cage, nothing to do, no bedding, not moving at all. He had issues. We did some reading and found out they get lonely when isolated, so we got him a buddy who cheered him right up. Now they cruise their habitat with the glee of two hairy, naked guys who just moved into the swankest condo in the neighborhood. Awesome colors, no shortage of healthy food and fresh water, an upper deck, the exercise room, climbing walls... Second bit of bad news is that the cage, while awesome looking, is crap. These guys will break out any day. For their safety, I'm probably going to invest in the simple, glass aquarium with a mesh top. So I don't think the chain pet store is the way to go. Was in today. I feed my animals high quality food, but they do fight eating kibble so ON MY VETS RECOMMENDATION, I do mix a bit of wet food in. The girl running a cash register is NOT a vet. I guess I was buying what the cashier thought to be a "sub prime", or as she put it it, not High QUALITY brand of food, and proceeded to tell me so. I had to stand and defend my animals health and feeding habits. She then said "we won't be carrying this anymore", as an animal advocate and well as working in the field personally, I will do as I and my vet see fit. I really didn't shop here too much before this, but you can bet I won't now. She was entirely rude to the point my friend couldn't believe I didn't lose it. She was clearly not wanting to wait on me either and in fact told the others waiting, sorry. Get a new line of work. read more

I go there often, but usually after PetSmart and Pet Supplies Plus, because the prices are a bit higher, and at times I've seen some pretty unsavory things with the small mammal pets there in the past (signs of overheating in the cages for example). This may have improved lately, but it's kind of burned into my brain. The staff is very helpful, and when you ask them a question about where to find stuff, they'll practically jump to help you. Very friendly! I've bought dog harnesses and cat litter and a plastic see-through cone for my poor dog's head when he wounded himself. I'm a huge fan of these tiny little clip things they have so that you can move a dog's tags easily from collar to collar. i haven't found these anywhere else and they're great for someone who likes to...umm... hoard dog collars. Not that I would be that sort of person, of course. Nice store over all. read more

We had an animal guru when we were here pondering the pet decision. Son #3 wants a pet badly. No cats or dogs in my house due to allergies and frankly I can't handle it. I could handle a caged reptile though, no snake. So we got this woman to help us who has bearded dragons and she answered all our questions about them and geckos and lizards. She showed us all the stuff we would need to get (cha ching!) and told us why we had to get special sand (they eat it) as well as other important things like which heat lamp wouldn't keep you up at night. We couldn't just get it yet. There's more discussions that need to take place before it happens. It was nice to have a pet owner help us so freely! read more

The poor cashier had to be the one to go back and get me crickets, help another customer out, and come back to the front to ring me up. This petco's staff is amazing. Anything from dog training, grooming, reptiles and small animals, the employees at this store really seem to care about the well being of there animals and customers. I have a dog, cat, two snakes, and a gecko. They always have a lot of cool info on the animals. The trainers did a great job training my dog, and my dog always looks his best after getting groomed by any of the groomers there. One even did a great looking mowhawk for me (per my request). This store has made a huge turn around and now my favorite place to shop for all my pets. read more

I kind of want to say... how is this place still open? I stopped in quickly because I saw this place before I saw PetSmart (where I usually hit up for my pet needs). I was in a pinch because I needed some dog food for my parents' house since my dog was staying with them for the night and the next day. I also needed to pick up a cat litter scoop for my sister (who was also staying with my parents since it was X-Mas). I found my dog's food but alas, no small bag available. They only had a 30lb bag. There wasn't a large variety of Wellness Dog Food that I'm used to seeing either. They had a handful to choose from and they didn't carry a good selection of different sized bags. I was also alarmed when I saw how much more expensive it was here. It was about $10 difference and so I decided to head over to PetSmart to save my money. I really didn't think there was going to be that big of a difference in price! I did look for the litter scoop here and I found a cheap one that fit the bill so I took it to the register to purchase it. I stood in a lane and waited. And waited. And waited. And I think you get the point. A few minutes go by and I was about to head out the door and leave the scoop there but a nice guy came by and rang us up. He did excuse himself for the wait since he was stocking some nearby shelves and didn't see me standing there. The store just looked old, not so clean, and a little depressing. I am a long time, loyal customer of Petco and I have never been more disappointed than when I was there on Sunday with my dog. My dog is in training and I use an e-collar and prong collar while he is in training. The employee who was tall and had long brown hair offended me by telling me how terrible I was for using those training devices. She insisted my dog needed Prozac kept telling me how I should train my dog. Then she proceeded to embarrass me and tell the customer behind me my dog was reactive to step back when my dog was sitting there patiently for me to pay. I understand people have their views about different training techniques but I felt it was extremely out of line for this employee to speak to me the way she did. I left feeling like a bad pet owner and extremely embarrassed. They have lost my business for sure! read more

Like any of the large pet store chains it fills its purpose. I was shopping for a new harness for one of my dogs. The staff was super helpful and even encouraged me to take the dog outside to try on each of the potential harnesses. I probably spent about an hour in the store checking out the "no pull" options. Typically I do not write reviews. After our experience at this specific store, it requires sharing what occurred. My boyfriend and I found a turtle and decided to keep him, which meant we needed the necessities for his survival. When we began shopping at this specific PetCo, I asked an employee (Tracey) if we could use a tape measure to measure one of the tanks since it did not fully specify the dimensions. She rolled her eyes at me and stated "I GUESS I could find one for you..." and on her arrival back asked "what would you even need a tape measure for in this store". I thought her response was a little rude and it made me uncomfortable, but I shrugged it off and explained my reasoning. After this experience, we continued shopping and could not find a specific item I wanted which I saw on PetSmart's website. I thought we could save a trip by purchasing it here: a deodorizer for the tank. After searching for an employee to help me look, the same employee came up to ask what I was looking for. I asked where the deodorizer's are. Again, she rolled her eyes at me and said "What is a deodorizer? Why would you even need a deodorizer? Why would you want to deodorize...water". Her response was extremely rude and displayed a lot of attitude. Instead of just helping a customer or explaining she was not sure what I meant or asking another employee to help us, she chose to display rude customer service while patronizing my items I planned to purchase from her place of employment. At this point, I was extremely upset by her poor customer service and attitude towards me. I told her she did not need to be rude to me. She began to raise her voice stating she is not being rude and stated again she did not understand why I would want the specific item I asked about, while rolling her eyes a third time. I stated I am done shopping here due to her attitude and walked away, while my boyfriend continued to try to talk with her about her attitude. Even after our argument, she stated I was being a b!tch as I walked away. By now I was fuming by her character in the work setting. I approached the register and demanded to speak to a manager... you will NOT believe it. Turns out the only manager on staff was HER!!! It blows my mind that this location would have someone like her as their manager. Someone like her whom rolls her eyes, does not want to help her customers, whom patronizes someone's choices in items, whom calls a customer a derogatory word. It also does not surprise me now why we never were asked once by an employee if we needed help until we asked. Why would any employee want to ask a customer if they need help when their own manager does not want to help her customers? She is a HORRIBLE role model for her employees. I hope their General Manager (Jeff) reads this and makes an executive decision regarding the managers he hires. As a manager myself, I could NEVER imagine a staff member of mine (especially someone representing the store) speak to a customer like that. They would be fired immediately. Her disrespect towards me has made my decision that I will NEVER shop at this location again. read more

No one greeted me as I entered... Bad smell as I entered. Small animals habitats were filthy (water bottles leaked into bedding in many cages with hamsters) many had no wheels for exercise. Sad neglected animals suffering out of laziness of staff. Only one worker seen in the whole store, she looked tired and worn out working the registers and running to the fish and reptile area while leaving the registers unattended.
