Up until now, we were very happy with the grooming at Petco in T.O. Not any longer!!! Our dog came home showing signs of dehydration after his appointment. They are understaffed and overworked. I'm back to not recommending this particular Petco. You're better off going to the one in Westlake Village on Thousand Oaks Blvd. At least my visits to THAT store weren't what I experienced today. So for this store visit today, I just walked in for a in store pickup. But when I got there the loud speaker was repeatedly asking for a cashier to get up front. This went on for quite some time until a young woman finally made it up there. She was apparently unable to retrieve all of my items that I preordered that were apparently now out of stock... It was obvious she didn't want to be there. Based on how many times I've seen this from this place I question the hiring manager. There are people who actually want jobs. Try hiring some of those. With much regret, and after shopping at the original Petco location (on Hillcrest Drive) since its inception in 2000, I have no alternative but to shop at Petco's competitor. I will start on the negative stars: 1. They discontinued the only Purina Pro Plan food that my 18-1/2 year old cat eats and has been eating most of her life (she won't eat the new stuff). If some of the artificial ingredients are all of a sudden so bad for Petco to discontinue selling it, I can go right down the road where I know I can find it to keep her happy. And, yeah ... she's still healthy at 18-1/2. 2. Since this store moved to the Janss Mall location, they substantially downsized. I realize this is due to on-line purchasing. When I started noticing that they were stocking less of what I need, I naturally turned to the internet. Bit since I was a long-time customer of this store, I really wanted to help keep it thriving. It's a 3-star review, so here they are: 1: Kudos to their pet adoption clinics through which I adopted two of my beloved kitties. 2: Cleanliness, location and hours. 3: (5 if I could) go to Bob. I have seen so many managers and sales associates come and go in the 19 years years I have been shopping at this Petco. It's been a roller-coaster, to say the least. Since the move to the Janss Mall, in my opinion, it's been a seemingly revolving door of flakes. But Bob has been the constant in the come-and-go retail world. I really appreciated that. I had gotten to know him since the original Hillcrest Drive location, to the point that the minute I walked in the door and got my merch to the counter, he already had my Petco rewards info entered and I was ready to go. So kind, friendly and knowledgeable, he tied a really mean knot in those bags to secure the goods to keep them from rolling around in the car. I feel sacrilegious for shopping at the other place, and sometimes even on-line, because I wanted to continue to be a loyal supporter of this local store. However, Petco downsized, and then decided to discontinue various long-time brand lines. Such are the times. Perhaps a merger with the other place might be on the horizon. read more

I just had an incredible, positive experience here and needed to share. I was looking at wire crates, and quickly saw that they were more expensive than anticipated- like everything these days! I called another store to see if they had crates in stock, and the manager here overheard and told me he could price match online sales prices on the crate! He saved me over $40 and a trip across town, and he was kind and caring on top of it! This kind of thing doesn't happen a lot anymore, and I want to make sure everyone knows that there are still helpful people in the world - one of them is the manager at this store! This Petco just opened on November 6, 2017 after their store a block or two away closed. This space is much smaller, but looks crisper and newly remodeled of course. Staff was easy to find and quick to offer me a greeting and assistance. Pet enclosures looked much nicer than before, and many were larger in size. When I didn't find quite what I was looking for, the cashier suggested I try the next closest location or come back the next day when they would have everything better stocked. I also commented that one item I wanted was half the price if I bought on Amazon and he let me know they have a price matching with Amazon so I went back and bought that item too. Overall very helpful staff and clean, new store. They do sell live animals. read more

My first time ever I had to reschedule 3 times because our scheduled groomer was "sick". After the 4th time I was happy with the service and decided to give them a second chance (or 5), I recently scheduled an appointment for just a bath and teeth cleaning and our scheduled groomer happens to be "sick" AGAIN. Even though this Petco is smaller in size compared to other locations, they have a great & helpful crew working this location. They actually had the items that the other location I went to, didn't have. Out of the 4 items I went in for, they had 3. I bought a petbed that was 20% off, but they would not take it back even when i had reciept??!* Mngr refused and told me to go to the location 20 miles away where I bought it. Worst experience with a groomer in my entire life. It took Emma 15 minutes to enter my dog"s rabies vac information in the computer. An hour later she called and said my dog had several fleas. I had to pick him up immediately or agree to the flea and tick shampoo. No one answers the phone when call. Four hours later he still had not been bathed. Yet, on the phone she said he had to be picked up immediately. I told her he had been treated for fleas. His bedding and every where he sits has been treated. He hasn't scratched at all. I do not appreciate being lied to. Emma is not only a liar but she is very slow and obnoxious. I will not be using Petco for grooming ever again. read more

Beware of the awful GROOMING department!!!! Second time ever going there with a different groomer and there her name was Emma short haired blonde girl with pink/green hair, and she butchered/shaved my dog and he had sores on him didn't cut his nails nor do anything that was asked and he got groomed often before coming into Petco so he had zero mats. I'm so sorry I gave this awful place a chance to try and groom my dog. Then EMMA proceeded to lie and tell me he was aggressive biting her????. My dog is almost 9 years old this is the EVER first time in 9 years anyone has ever said this. Emma was dishonest and then proceeded to tell me that I don't know how to communicate and she was extremely disrespectful! There grooming department is extremely unorganized them missing my first appointment without a phone call to cancel I wasted my day after waiting for a month for a grooming appointment walking in the store waiting 30 min before the regular store manager states no one is on the grooming salon today they called in sick. The unprofessionalism and disrespectful way I was treated by EMMA as well as she lied to me and her staff to try and cover up the horrible so called grooming she did on my dog. I can't believe Petco would remain to keep such an awful employee that does not know how to deal with animals nor customers. If you look other customers previous reviews it says the same thing about EMMA. Her grooming and her horrible etiquette she obviously needs to find another profession where she doesn't touch animals or deal with customers. We used to go to Petco Moorpark and I stopped almost 2 years ago because this location did do a good job. After 2 year I want it to give it a chance. I stoped by and made an appointment, the lady who was there was not to nice to me ( I do not remember her name) but my dog really need it a trim. At the time of my appointment, I showed up and she showed nice very friendly with my dog and very gentle. She was super nice an call me 5 min before finishing her so she didn't need to be in a cage. She called me and as soon as I arrived she was ready. Beck was amazing and super nice to my dog. I highly recommended her. It I think the lady who did my appointment can change her attitude a little bit. read more

We signed up for dog training at the new Petco in the janss mall. The trainer was awful. He traumatized my dogs. Went in to talk to a manager and get a refund. The manager Dante made everything right and gave us a refund. We will continue to be regular customers but will not participate in the dog training program until they get a new trainer. read more

If i could give a negative review i would. I signed my dog up for dog classes 120$. I showed up for classes at 9 am with a few other dog owners. We were left high and dry, both times the trainer didn't show up and he called to reschedule for the same time. I showed up a third time (no teacher again) and asked for a refund. Their policy is to only give store credit unless you have a paper receipt even though i had an electronic copy. I waited on their customer service line for an hour being transferred around and still no one would work with me on my refund. Only store credit Why would i want to spend money at this shop ever again?! read more

Please make sure you check the health and the gender of any pet you buy from this store. After being sold 2 male guinea pig by a rude sales person(I believe Kelly was her name) one of them came home sick. I could say more about her since I've had multiple bad experiences with her while my guinea pig was getting treated but I'll save that for the store survey. The manager, Sara was an absolute godsend in this mess of a store. She was quick to get him the necessary vet care he needed and he's doing well now. The issue that is at hand now is the gender of my 2 "male" guinea pigs. After taking them to a vet to get check ups and to schedule them to be neutered, I found out that one of my guinea pigs is in fact a girl AND she's pregnant. If you buy a pet from here and it's sick CALL THE STORE. Make them pay for vet appointments. Make them responsible for their lack of attention. read more

This was the first time I was going to try this Petco location. I had an appointment for pet grooming at 8:30 am. When I arrived the store's door was closed and petco website shows the store opens at 9:00. I walked my pet around and returned back at 8:40. Door still closed . I notice there is an employee inside. I knocked the door and she opened it for me. I approached the lady at the pet grooming department - name is Journey- tell her I had an appointment at 8:30 and she told me she will not take my dog because I'm late. I did try to explain the situation but she didn't care at all. It is very hard for any business to generate new and loyal customers. If Petco is trying to bring new and loyal customers let me tell you this is not the best strategy. They should train their employees on Customer Relationship Management. Petco should thank Journey for rejecting a new customer and helping generate negative reviews. read more

I just got 3 new goldfish and being that this was the closest store to my work, I went here. I also knew It had just opened up and wanted to come check It out. The inside is very appealing and my favorite part is the dog treats bar at the very front! But when I asked for help, not knowing anything about what to get for my new goldfish, the man was talking to me like I was an idiot for not knowing about goldfish. He asked me the same questions over and over again even though I had the same answer every time. I just thought It was very rude and definitely wasted my time. Something that could've taken 2 minutes ended taking more than 10. read more

I tried to order something on line and could not find it. I called the store and Jimmy helped me locate it. When it said they had limited stock, he double checked the inventory and had his lead update the amount on the web site. He walked me through the process so I could complete my order. Total jerks working here. I've been treated poorly in the past, but I understand a pet store need pet people, not necessarily people people. However, this morning, I wasn't sure what time they opened it so I got there at 8:30 AM (your hours are incorrect and not updated even in this yelp app). When they asked if they could help me I said I've been walking around for a half hour so let me just use the restroom first... Then, even though public restrooms are supposed to be open as of April 7, 2021, I was told that I cannot use the restroom. They had just opened up so all of the employees heard this and no one did anything. So basically they told me I could not use their facilities and since I had to go pee so badly I just left. Really, restrooms are only for the eight employees they had just standing around and not for customers? Hard to believe... I guess saying no is just so easy. Saying yes might've meant having to check with someone, or using common sense, or just being reasonable...I should've known better than to try the store again just cause it's closer I'll go back to going farther and using Petsmart- where they are always super nice and customer service oriented. read more

It's hard to explain what a "snarky" staff person is like - but that's the feeling I got when I left the store today. Kylie (the "Sales partner") seemed like she didn't want to be there. Every time I've been to the store, I've asked if my two pups can have a treat on their way out (I ask because each time I've gone to the store, the sales person has always offered). Anyway, the look she gave me was like I had asked the most inappropriate question and then she said, " I don't think I have the authorization to say yes." Huh? The past two times I went into the store at the Janss Mall I have had bad experiences. First time I was at the check out and the cashier just wanted to argue about a subject related to horses. Second time, 10/5/21 I went in the look for a new litter box for my cat, those litter boxes are so over priced. I was in line waiting to pay for something and there was a pitbull on leash ahead of me and at the back of the line is a woman with a very big German Shepard. I have PTSD, the Shepard started barking (very loud) and was trying to pull away from its owner. I made a comment to the cashier that the barking startles me and I moved away from both dogs. The woman with the Shepard decides to started to mouth off to me about how I should expect two dangerous dogs to behave in a store. She wouldnt stop! Where was the manager when this incident was going on? Why is it ok to bring in dangerous dogs into the store? I almost brought my cat in to fit him with a collar, imagine what could of happened if one of those dogs got loose? I will not be visiting this store anymore. My safety comes first. read more

I have been going to this Petco for many years, including when it was in the previous location on Hillcrest. At the Hillcrest location I had at least six instances where the grooming area was closed during normal hours, with no sign on the door or other explanation. After the move to the Janss mall, the same thing happened once in the early months at that location. Then the service improved greatly, and I found groomer Kaitlyn a joy to deal with. However, today I took my dog in for his usual nail trim, to be told by the girl behind the grooming counter (not Kaitlyn) that they had "just closed". There are posted hours on the store's front door for the grooming department, and I was there at 2:00 p.m., well within the posted hours. It is incredibly frustrating to have to take my dog back to the car and drive another 10 minutes to PetSmart just for a nail trim. There is clearly a management issue with this store. If you have posted open hours, you need to provide staff for those hours. read more
