DO NOT BRING YOUR PETS HERE! My pup wasn't mistreated as bad as the other pictures on here but you can definitely tell they are irresponsible and lack compassion for animals. We even brought our pup and payed $120 for a once a week training and he did not learn a damn thing that he did not know coming into the store. Waste of money and time and the trainer Melissa seemed like she hated her job most of the time. All things we wanted he to work were not worked on EVEN AT LEAST ONE TIME. Pathetic excuse for a Petco and will never be coming back unless I have to. Only bright side of this place is the cashiers, that are friendly and helpful. Thad the only star they deserve. read more

I've been taking my dogs to Petco at Downey for over 10-12 years and never had a problem . I got good report cards from Petco about my dogs . They opened up a new Petco last year in south gate and it was literally 5 minutes away from my house and I decided to try it out , big mistake. The first time I took my dog Daisy they had her for 6 hours and the groomer gave her a messed up cut that I was really not happy with. She had parts of her body shaven and other parts full of hair. I went back today and apparently they said that my dog was getting to aggressive and since they banned the muzzles at petcos now they would not be able to finish the job. My dog had hair on her head underneath part of her stomach and her tail. Everything else wS shaven(which I did not ask for I had asked for a 7) , my dog looks like a mess and they advised me to take her elsewhere . WOW. I'm disappointed because Petco just sent me home with my dog all messed up. I never had a problem like that at Downey. I can't take her there anymore because they made notes on the computer . It was a very stressful day but I did find someone that was willing to finish and clean up the job that Petco @ south gate could not do. Let me add this, Petco at south gate advised me to take my dog to a vet so they can sedate her for and hour and get her hair cut finished. Thanks for the professional advice. I stArted making calls and found this awesome person at grooming day salon (Instagram or yelp it ) and she said , bring her down. Let me tell you I'm glad I did not take petcos at south gate advice. At this location they cleaned up the terrible job Petco did and my dog looked waaaay better than she did and they did not use a muzzle or need it at all . She said she did get nervous when she heard the clippers going on but that she comfort her and she said it just takes patience and let the fog know it's ok and she was able to do the job. We need people like her at Petco . Aaaaand she was not even that expensive , wY cheaper than Petco . I'm giving it 3 stars for the cashier she was super nice and helpful but the negative review is for the dog trainer "Jen" . I had a very quick question and she was very rude and just said "I've got to get something for my class" as she raised her finger up and just walked away. I get that work can be overwhelming but she could of simply redirected me to another employee. I was considering dog training classes here for my dog because it's my local Petco but because of this experience I'll be looking into another location. read more

I was hesitant to book a grooming apt for my yorkie. I take her to petsmart but unfortunately due to Corona virus there grooming salon was closed and my yorkie was beginning to look like a little bear. I was desperate so I booked online with Jessica! Well that will be the first and last time I take her. Let's just say Jessica botched her hair. I'm assuming she doesn't have experience with yorkie hair because my poor dog looked horrible. When I went to pick up my dog she was shaking and un-easy her experience was not the best she was really jumpy for everything. So never again for me. Just a tip if your going to be a groomer have a friendly demeanor Jessica didn't even bother Introducing herself to my dog she put a leash on and my dog was pulling away my dog goes with EVERYONE but not with Jessica she literally could of just picked her up she's 7lb. Very disappointed in my first petco visit. My dogs face was completely messed up. Nothing about her face is even..one side of her face is longer than the other, and my dogs eye is swollen as if they hurt her!! Told me it would be three to four hours and it took them five hours and they were not even able to trim her nails. They told me to come back in a few weeks to finish her nails but I highly doubt I will ever take her back to these groomers. Very disappointed. Do not take your pets here. read more

Was skeptical of coming here after reading some reviews. Gave it a try anyway and brought my dog in for an Express bath and haircut since it was his first time here. He was a antsy at first but by the time I picked him up, he didn't want to leave. His service was quick and his hair has never been cut better by any other groomer I've tried. I was hesitant in writing this review because I hate being that person but wow got the worst service today here at petco. My girlfriend and I came in to see the assortment of animals this location had and I had told her that this is one has a female hairless guinea pig (she's been interested in one) and she wanted to meet it so I asked one associate and they said they'd call someone over we waited for a bit but saw that it was busy so I thought nothing of it. I asked another associate Aly her name was? I'm not sure but man worst customer service ever. I don't care about the niceties but she comes up with this sour attitude like damn quit the job if you're that unhappy... anyway when she opened up the cage she asked if we were going to purchase it (which in her defense we weren't but if we were we would have liked to meet her first without throwing her into a box without any questions) after we said no she pulled out this bs excuse about this animal being skittish and that they don't take it out for customers blah blah blah. It's just funny since I previously came and another associate helped me and I held her without her struggling and there was little to no sign of her being skittish so I knew it was just an excuse. I also work at petco so I know it was bs since I am aware of such an excuse. I'm on both sides of this I know some customers can be annoying but come on some employees should not be this lazy and carry such a bad attitude. Very rude and if I was a normal customer I would have probably wanted to talk to the leader on duty and if she was the LOD woah I feel bad for other customers and the staff. read more

I had an appt at 2pm for bath and haircut. When I get there, a groomer tells me that the person working on my dog is at lunch but that he will do intake. That it might take up to 3-4 hours. I get a call at 3pm saying to come pick up my dog because she's being aggressive. I rush over and one of the groomers let's me go inside where the kennels are. It was so loud in there, dark, and documents blocking eye view for dogs in their kennel. My dog was scared out of her mind. She was placed near bigger dogs who were so loud. As I'm taking her out, she is covered in poop. And it wasn't recent poop. That means that she was terrified as soon as she was put in the kennel and when the groomer tried to take her out an HOUR later, she was trying to defend herself. I couldn't wipe her poop off. It was so dry and sticking to her hair. The groomer said that they could try again and see if she would do better. She asked if this was her first time, but my dog has been going there for years. The groomer that was supposed to work on her was new and had just transferred from another store. Each time, there is always a new groomer. Someone new to get adjusted to. People don't last there! I told her I would just take her home. I'm not bringing my dog here ever again! My dog is still stressed and not leaving my side! read more

I've never had a problem with this place until I took my dog to get groomed yesterday. I've taken her once before and the groomer was great this time it was a different girl and she did a half ass job I found a lot of long hairs super uneven and SHE CUT MY DOG! She has a scab the size of a dime right below her ear, never again will I let her groom my dog again! read more

This is the worst petco location I have been too. I usually go often for my cat supplies, and this place was a huge wreck. There was a broken fish bowl laying all over the floor with no one in sight of cleaning it up. The hamsters cages looked filthy with poop all over. Poor animals! The items were out of order. If I could put zero stars I would. I asked for assistance on purchasing a bird twice. The first girl with the short pink hair said she would advise the manager and she ended up leaving and even seen me waiting and just clocked out. She didn't even let anyone know before I left. I was waiting for 20 minutes like an idiot thinking she was going to help. She was assisting someone with fish before she left. The second girl said she would ask the manager to assist as well and didn't do anything either. They were all just talking. I waited another 15 minutes and I just ended up leaving. To top it off the birds were in filthy conditions. Their wings were full of feces, their toys as well, and their water was red and full of feces with food like if it hasn't been cleaned for days. I honestly could just buy healthier and cheaper birds from a specialized breeder. Won't be going back again. You are suppose to clean their cages everyday day or they have develop infections or fungus. read more

A little over a week ago I went into the store to buy cat food, I pulled up the bag and checked the expiration date. I always check the date because a few other times I've gone in the bags were expired and just like those other times I found an expired bag. The last time I took it to an associate and he was nice and said he would tell his manager but apparently they didn't or just didn't care. I took it along with one that was not expired to the register and showed and explained to the MANAGER/LEADER that it was expired. He just said oh ok and rang up both bags, I told him I didn't want to take the expired bag and asked him if they're allowed to sell expired food and he responded that sometimes customers still want to buy it. Ummm I'm pretty sure most of us care for our pets enough to not feed them expired food. The bag was 3 months expired!!! Not a week not a month but 3. He took off the expired bag and rang me up as if nothing. Thennnn I called customer care or whatever and they tell me the District Leader will be calling me... a week later and still no call. I called customer care back and they said their DL notated that he called. I told them that was a lie since I always answer my phone which I do or call back any missed calls right away. Even if he did why did he not leave a message? I will definitely be shopping elsewhere and will make sure to no longer recommend them or have any of my friends or family shop at petco anymore. read more

Worst Petco ever! They do not know how to take care of their fish. Every time I go to this PETCO location I always see multiple dead fish. It has occurred many times that I buy a fish and it does not survive the week. I am a fish enthusiast, I know how to maintain the PH levels, the water temperature and the ammonia and nitrate levels, so I know the death of my fishes are not my fault. I have brought the attention of the fish problem to the staff and they do not seem to care. They may have good advice but they themselves do not show it on the way they maintain their fish. read more

We walked in as last minute shoppers for a travel crate we needed by thurs which was two days away and it seemed as if everyone else was sold out and Jeremy came over and asked if we needed help and was able to help us out with his great iPad and found us our crate. Took my Baby to get groomed there on opening day and had an aright experience. Brought him back and WOW was I impressed. I was not only impressed by the grooming, great costumer service and dedication for my dog but for the overall experience of this store in general. Andrew not only groomed my dog perfectly but handled my fragile 7 month old pup who is barely getting handled by strangers yet a groomer. I would also like to say that the management has been so knowledgeable and completely dedicated to pets and costumers. Iv'e had many encounters with the ass. i wish i could have given them 0 stars. i am very disappointed with everyone here. i brought my young one to get her first public hair cut, when i picked her up first thing i noticed was a patch with no hair behind her leg. as i got closer she got injured with the clippers. i got mad and started asking questions. the response was she moved and my baby got hurt. i said ok, 1 month later i bring her again giving these people the benefit of doubt and now they scraped her head with machine. they said she moved again wow! really? little did they know i was watching all this time i did not go anywhere and she did not move that did it for me i will never come here again ever. not only is services unprofessional they also lied. note: if your going to run a business where you will be taking your family member / pet / dog or animal people need to seriously rethink training associates. i felt like if the barber carelessly took clippers and did a whatever haircut on my son hurting him on the way. read more

I took my dog "George" to this Petco a few weeks back to get groomed. This was a first for us because I have always been afraid to take him anywhere because he is a little antisocial. George is afraid of everything, very shy and I was concerned of how he would do while getting groomed. Thankfully, Eric the groomer that helped me with George was great. He was very nice and knowledgeable, when I called to make the appointment he went beyond the simple questions and assured me that my dog would be fine. During check in time he didn't rush to take George back , he offered him treats and talked to him to gain his trust. I felt really comfortable to leave George for his bath and when I came back to pick him up, his coat was shiny, soft and smelled great. His teeth were brushed and he was happy and not stressed at all. I really appreciated all the time and effort that was given to me and George while his visit to the grooming department. I have seen your pictures for this Downey Petco and I must inform you that as a Vet myself your dog has what is called"Hot Spots" and you can clearly see that the dog has biting on his own skin. So it's good that you went to see a vet for this but as for pointing fingers to blame some one or a business you Need to do your research on the breed of your dog I know that not everyone likes to accept the fact that their pets are not perfect but NOT ALL pets are perfect , every breed has a flaw and unfortunately this is one of your dogs flaws. Just take care of the dog and it will be ok. But as for trying to place blame where it doesn't belong( because that is what it looks like) you need STOP be an adult and focus on what's important which is the dog so those are some nice pictures you have with some funny captions but seriously your are not a child so stop acting like one. Don't place blame where it doesn't belong!!!! Man up and just move on I have seen things like this happen to people like you and it's not a good outcome for you in the end. Stop wasting your time and just move on their are more important things to worry about in life and this is not one of them. read more
