Update: ordered pickup cat flea spray last night and arrived to store at 9:30. They open at 9. Within minutes I received an email that they are out of stock. So I came here for nothing and wasted time. The employee was completely unapologetic and even tried to upsell me on the food I was buying. Will be making formal complaint to corporate and will NOT be returning to this absolute dumpster fire of a franchise.

Freshly groomed dog with new toys
Carmelina F.

Went in looking for new toys and a bed for my puppy who is very particular in what they play with etc. Dominick was a great help! Couldn't have asked for more! He gave great suggestions on which toys might be best for my dog and helped guide me to the needed areas for items. Super friendly and really puts customers above all else :) also loved Valeria's grooming job!

Dewclaw wound still bleeding 4 days after injury
Peining W.

Petco groomers cut off our dog's dewclaw, downplayed the incident, and did not reimburse medical expenses. On May 3, 2024, we brought our pup to Petco on 16th St for a full service grooming. A half hour later, we received a call to meet at Sage, an emergency veterinary service. One of the managers, Quinn greeted us. He explained that our dog was there due to uncontrollable bleeding; a skin tag was accidentally shaved off. I asked him if it was her dew claw that was clipped. Quinn replied no, it was a growth on her skin. The vet at Sage told us that our dog lost a lot of blood. Although we asked could it be a dewclaw, Sage also said it was a clipped skin tag. We were unable to see the wound immediately, as they wrapped up her leg. We were instructed to keep her bandage dry and to remove in 48 hours. Quinn said that Petco would cover any resulting expenses if needed. Our dog was uneasy for entire weekend. Later when we removed the bandage, the area was still oozing blood. We discovered that her dewclaw was indeed cutoff. A dewclaw is both nail and tendons. It's similar to a thumb for dogs. Proper removal requires general anesthesia. We were surprised that Petco and Sage denied it was her dewclaw. She was only bandaged and not given proper treatment such as pain killers. Our pup must have been in so much pain. We visited our regular vet on May 7, 2024. The wound was still bleeding. Our vet confirmed that the groomer cut her dewclaw. He prescribed pain killers and antibiotics, and advised us to air dry and not to wrap the wound. Two days later, I called Petco for reimbursement of medical expenses. I spoke with Christina, another manager at Petco. She said that for reimbursement, she has to use the company credit card. This was not mentioned earlier. I gave her the details for my vet for her to follow up. Over the next month, Christina and my vet played phone tag. I followed up a few more times with Christina by phone on through July. Petco should have stated up front that they only pay veterinary expenses via their company credit card. It is now August and clear to me that Petco is not reimbursing for injuries they created. Aside from cutting off my pup's dewclaw, which is in itself bad for a grooming service, they downplayed the severity and denied cutting off the claw. This led to insufficient veterinary treatment, where my dog was not provided with painkillers and antibiotics at the time they were most needed. It is clear that the folks at this Petco location are more concerned for their own welfare than the health or wellbeing of the animals. Naomi, the groomer, either lied or did not correct the fact that she clipped off a dewclaw. Surely, she would have noticed a half inch nail with tendon attached during the clean up process... Quinn, the manager who was adamant it was a skin-tag and not a dewclaw, did not get the story straight and influenced improper and incomplete vet care for our pup... Christina has been giving us the run around on reimbursement for months. No accountability at all. According to Quinn, injuries requiring vet assistance are regular weekly occurrences. Our dog was not herself for weeks following this incident. Stay clear of this Petco, if you love your pet. Update 8/22: Two days after this review, Petco reimbursed vet expenses.

Great location near downtown SF with large free parking. Pretty standard and complete selections of all pet supplies. Like their cat section - lots of choices of cat foods and furniture. Also saw some cute birds, hamsters, and a couple of chinchillas! They were cute and therapeutic to look at, even if you don't buy.

When it comes to our Fur Babies..Looking for a Grooming salon can be heartwarming..But when you found one...You'll Stick with that groomer as she knows how to take care of your Fur Buddy...Angelica of Petco Grooming on Potrero did it... My Buddy knows when he look at the Window and saw Petco. He would freeze...Upon Check-in Angelica took my buddy with care... She did a great job on cutting my Buddies Matted Hair... This is his Second Grooming with Angelica...

Grooming review only: Wanted to sing praises for Libra. My pup got a bath and brush with Libra before the holidays. She came back soooo cute and fresh. Libra was super patient with my anxious pup, was communicative about timing and service, and she is super professional. Go see/request Libra!

I went here today to get my 10lb puppy's chip put in. He still learning etiquette so I let them know he can be a little rowdy and I expected them to proceed with professionalism. However, they proceeded to hold him down by the neck and offered no words of reassurance or kindness to the puppy. It was aggressive and disrespectful. In the end they refused to provide service after my puppy started growling, as one would expect if you're getting held down by force. He's very easy to deal with for me and I would expect Petco employees to know how to handle dogs better than this.

My dog Fuji - images are of a couple bald spots out of many.

Grooming horrible from Tiffany A. My dog was dropped off by my mom, but this job is just horrible. Lots of uneven areas on my puppy and he came back with several bald spots. Would not recommend and it was a hellish choice to choose to groom him here. Spread the word as your dog will only come back with butchered hair, bad odor, and depressed. Took 4 hours, for a very bad haircut. Better chance of a better haircut just by a independent groomer than here. Never again.

I recently took my dog to Petco for a grooming session, and I am extremely disappointed with the service. I specifically asked for a trim, but they ended up cutting my dog's hair way too short. When I was dropping my dog the lady checked his body and verified there is no matting and that they are able to just trim. It was not what I requested at all, and my poor dog looks uncomfortable and depressed now. Even they cut his hair unevenly, some parts are longer some parts super short that I can see his pink skin. I expected better attention to detail and communication from a professional grooming service. I will not be returning to Petco for grooming services in the future."

Toby's terrible haircut. His head, legs and tail all various lengths of shag. Looks like a 5 year old attempted to cut his hair.

Review for Adam at Bark Busters San Francisco…read more We had an incredible experience working with Adam from Bark Busters in San Francisco. From the very first session, it was clear he has a deep understanding of dog behavior and a calm, confident approach to training. Adam helped us work through some long-standing challenges with our dog, Zoe, and the progress we've seen has been genuinely life-changing. Adam didn't just focus on Zoe -- he focused on us as owners, teaching us how to communicate clearly and consistently in a way Zoe could actually understand. His explanations were practical, easy to apply, and rooted in real behavioral insight rather than gimmicks. Even after the first session, we noticed Zoe was calmer, more responsive, and more confident. What really sets Adam apart is how supportive and thorough he is. He walked us through each technique step by step, answered every question thoughtfully, and made sure we felt confident continuing the training on our own. We never felt rushed or overwhelmed -- just empowered. Zoe is now noticeably better behaved, less reactive, and overall happier -- and we credit Adam entirely for that transformation. If you're in the Bay Area and looking for a trainer who truly understands both dogs and humans, we can't recommend Adam highly enough.

Resource guarding his food bowl, bad at walking, random growling at us, overstimulated by balls/dogs, and generally uncontrollable in any situation. We inquired with a bunch of different dog trainers and decided to go with Refined K9 given their holistic approach. Before Refinedk9, I had tried "positive only" trainers that evaluated Buddha for his food aggression, but they were totally ineffective and, in fact, made his reactivity towards food worse. We were also way over-feeding him and numbing him to treats. Other unqualified trainers were also unable to explain how they would properly introduce an e-collar and why e-collars are used. We were extremely anxious about having Buddha do the 4-week board and train to "reset", but we felt okay after learning Jose has many French bulldogs himself. Even though we didn't get super frequent updates, it was clear every week that Buddha was very well taken care of. Jose took the first week to evaluate our dog, his behavior, and get to know him, without "jumping" into conditioning. He took the time to understand us, our dog's behaviors, and tailored a program to uplevel Buddha slowly (place, relaxing around food, learning how to walk properly, with a gentler prong collar, and then an e-collar). He also helped Buddha learn how to 'communicate' with other dogs and 'socialize' properly in a safe space (not a random dog park). When we visited Buddha, we could tell he respected and liked Jose. I cried with happiness the day our dog came back :) He walked perfectly, he was confident, and knew how to communicate with other dogs. He was calmer in our home but still had his personality. We learned to make hard changes to our environment that was overstimulating for our dog and how to better communicate with him. Even though it's been hard enforcing changes at home, I feel so much happier with our structure. The intake process with Refinedk9 was a little confusing, as we talked to 3 different trainers over phone/email, although all of them recommended Jose for us. At the end of the day, we trusted our decision to move forward, and we are incredibly thankful to have our boy in the hands of a highly experienced and trustworthy dog trainer.

She was incredibly sweet but completely unaccustomed to home or city life--chewing everything, jumping on counters, struggling to focus, fearful on city walks, and prone to intense play biting. Enrolling her in PrimePaw's Adolescent Academy for three weeks, followed by daycare, has been truly transformative. In just two months, Bootsy has developed focus, impulse control, and a real love for training. She walks calmly through the city now, no longer counter-surfs, and happily settles on her mat to train with us at home every day! Most importantly, she's become a joyful, confident dog. Bootsy absolutely lights up when she arrives at PrimePaw each morning--tail wagging, eager to go in--which says everything.
