I had one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had at this Petco grooming salon, entirely because of the store manager, Alejandra. I brought my dog in for her scheduled grooming appointment. She had a small amount of matting, which I acknowledged from the beginning, and I had absolutely no issue paying the additional dematting fee. My dog is professionally groomed every month, and she had actually been groomed in New York just two weeks earlier. There is simply no scenario in which she went from a normal grooming to being so severely matted that shaving was the only humane option. Instead of assessing her properly or discussing reasonable alternatives, Alejandra immediately insisted that my dog had to be shaved. It felt as though the priority was finishing the appointment as quickly as possible rather than providing the service I had booked and paid for. What made the experience unacceptable was not just the disagreement about grooming. It was the way I was treated. Alejandra told me that I was a bad dog owner and implied that I was hurting my dog. That was incredibly disrespectful, completely unprofessional, and factually inaccurate. My dog is groomed regularly, receives consistent veterinary care, and I specifically brought her in to address the small amount of matting before it became a larger issue. Shaming customers instead of educating them is not acceptable. To make matters worse, after refusing to perform the appointment I had scheduled, she asked me to come back to the store in person to schedule another appointment. She had already wasted approximately 40 minutes of my time, refused to honor my existing appointment, and then expected me to invest even more time because of a problem she had created. I left, booked with another groomer, and they had no issue caring for my dog appropriately without resorting to shaving. A manager sets the standard for customer service. If this interaction reflects the leadership at this location, I would strongly recommend taking your pet elsewhere. Pet owners deserve honesty, professionalism, and respect, not insults and unnecessary ultimatums. read more

I have taken my little pup here for grooming and the first few times, they did a great job. The prices are also pretty reasonable, and the people who work there are generally quick, kind and patient. They also have a loyalty program where a wash is free after a couple visits. However, I have stopped going to them for grooms because my pup has had an ear infection 2x after getting groomed here. Maybe they aren't careful about getting water in my pups ears and just not cleaning her ears properly or safely. The first time it happened, I just thought they were having an off day. After the second time, I decided I will never take my pup for grooms here. Expensive vet fees for something that can be prevented! My dog has never had an ear infection except the 2x from this place. read more

I am simply shocked to see social, intelligent, amazing parrots callously confined in isolation in a sterile, miserable plastic container.... and betta fish (who do feel pain and suffer, as all animals do) in these incredibly small containers. Did you know that more fish die on the shelf and are thrown away than they even sell? I've spoken to many former Petco employees who have quit because of the immense animal suffering and death they had to deal with. They have to clean up the dozen and dozens of dead animals every morning. Do not support this animal-abusing company. Adopt from your local shelter instead, there are so many animals who need homes. Their website states that you can't make an appointment for nail trims: "Walk-in services, such as nail trimming, teeth-brushing, ear cleaning, and gland expression are unavailable for online or over the phone booking. Simply visit a Petco Grooming Salon near you for these services. Subject to groomer's schedule." I brought my dogs in on a Saturday to get their nails trimmed, and was told by a woman at the counter that they were fully booked. I asked for the earliest appointment they had the next day, and she handed me a clipboard to fill out and set a time at 9 a.m. I come in the next day, and there's a man at the counter. He tells me I don't have an appointment and that they're fully booked. Mind you, there are literally no other customers there and no dogs being groomed. I ask him to look at the clipboard listing my dogs' names, but he still insists I didn't make an appointment. I then ask him to show me the clipboard he just looked at, and I point out that it says I have a 9 a.m. appointment. His response, "We're booked. No one put your appointment in the computer." He then asks me for proof of one of my dog's vaccination records, which I don't have. And fine, if that's their policy, but it didn't explain why he wouldn't take my other dog, whose vaccination records he apparently had. This guy was looking for reasons not to be helpful. So, to recap, you can't make an appointment, except you can, but they'll pretend like they don't have it, and even if they do have it because you point it out to them, they still won't do it, and they'll give you attitude even though it's their people who made the error. Petco groomers cut off our dog's dewclaw, downplayed the incident, and did not reimburse medical expenses. On May 3, 2024, we brought our pup to Petco on 16th St for a full service grooming. A half hour later, we received a call to meet at Sage, an emergency veterinary service. One of the managers, Quinn greeted us. He explained that our dog was there due to uncontrollable bleeding; a skin tag was accidentally shaved off. I asked him if it was her dew claw that was clipped. Quinn replied no, it was a growth on her skin. The vet at Sage told us that our dog lost a lot of blood. Although we asked could it be a dewclaw, Sage also said it was a clipped skin tag. We were unable to see the wound immediately, as they wrapped up her leg. We were instructed to keep her bandage dry and to remove in 48 hours. Quinn said that Petco would cover any resulting expenses if needed. Our dog was uneasy for entire weekend. Later when we removed the bandage, the area was still oozing blood. We discovered that her dewclaw was indeed cutoff. A dewclaw is both nail and tendons. It's similar to a thumb for dogs. Proper removal requires general anesthesia. We were surprised that Petco and Sage denied it was her dewclaw. She was only bandaged and not given proper treatment such as pain killers. Our pup must have been in so much pain. We visited our regular vet on May 7, 2024. The wound was still bleeding. Our vet confirmed that the groomer cut her dewclaw. He prescribed pain killers and antibiotics, and advised us to air dry and not to wrap the wound. Two days later, I called Petco for reimbursement of medical expenses. I spoke with Christina, another manager at Petco. She said that for reimbursement, she has to use the company credit card. This was not mentioned earlier. I gave her the details for my vet for her to follow up. Over the next month, Christina and my vet played phone tag. I followed up a few more times with Christina by phone on through July. Petco should have stated up front that they only pay veterinary expenses via their company credit card. It is now August and clear to me that Petco is not reimbursing for injuries they created. Aside from cutting off my pup's dewclaw, which is in itself bad for a grooming service, they downplayed the severity and denied cutting off the claw. This led to insufficient veterinary treatment, where my dog was not provided with painkillers and antibiotics at the time they were most needed. It is clear that the folks at this Petco location are more concerned for their own welfare than the health or wellbeing of the animals. Naomi, the groomer, either lied or did not correct the fact that she clipped off a dewclaw. Surely, she would have noticed a half inch nail with tendon attached during the clean up process... Quinn, the manager who was adamant it was a skin-tag and not a dewclaw, did not get the story straight and influenced improper and incomplete vet care for our pup... Christina has been giving us the run around on reimbursement for months. No accountability at all. According to Quinn, injuries requiring vet assistance are regular weekly occurrences. Our dog was not herself for weeks following this incident. Stay clear of this Petco, if you love your pet. Update 8/22: Two days after this review, Petco reimbursed vet expenses. read more

Went to the Petco at 16th and Potrero with a friend to have their dog groomed. It was a scheduled appointment. We were asked if the dog had heath issues. The owners reply was" just the usual issues when a dog gets older; she is in good health". They refused to groom the dog because of its age which I understand is not Petco policy. This review is about one person and pertains to guinea pigs. Christina, Christina, Christina!!! Every pet shop needs a Christina -- who went ridiculously above/ beyond for us. We went to purchase dog/guinea pig supplies w/ me just having to "just see" the piggies. Of course, I had to leave w/ "Critter," a 4-month-old pig who was a heart stealer. I have 2 older rescue pigs -- so a newbie to young pigs, pigs from pet stores, bonding young & old pigs. I bonded Critter w 2 older pigs same day -- beautifully. A neighbor then told me this is a no-no. New pigs need to be separated for abt 4-6 weeks completely -- before attempting bonding. Their immune systems are different, they could be carrying certain things that could be detrimental to older pigs, etc. Setting up 2 separate cages in our apt would've been impossible --(pigs need a lot of space --our current set is 6 ft x 3 ft). Christina immediately offered to take Critter back -- keep him separate from other pigs in store & monitor his health for a month or so -- under the care of Petco's partner vet hospital -- to ensure he wasn't bringing home anything that could jeopardize the older pigs. She has called us weekly to update us on his progress/disease free status. We will be picking up Critter this week. PS: If you are considering a piggie as a 1st timer, do your homework. !) Not for children (they resist being handled until you spend months earning their trust). 2) Not for teens who might get bored or resist the high maintenance/attention needed. 3) Not inexpensive to maintain properly (clean cage often, daily veggies, unlimited hay). 4) They are social creatures (don't get 1 -- get 2). In Switzerland & some other countries, its illegal to own 1 (considered an act of "cruetly to animals.") 5) They require attention, playtime on the floor, in your lap, etc. I have owned over 2 dozen different species of animals, reptiles, birds, fish... I love/loved them all dearly. But no animal comes close to the charm/personality/love of guinea pigs. They are special to someone who can dedicate time, patience, love, care & attention. They will reject you/run/be afraid for months -- but when they finally trust you, it is a truly special/unique experience & relationship. read more

I appreciated the fact that they requested we bring all updated vaccine info as well. The groomer was great with my dog. I brought my dog here for grooming because it's the only Petco that has available appointments within the same week. In hindsight, this should have been a red flag. I chose the first appointment of the day- 9am. When I was checking in, I overheard the groomer look at the appointments and tell another employee that the groomer I was assigned called out sick- that he would take me because I was already there, and that he needed to call to cancel the rest of the appointments that are assigned to her. We went over what I wanted for my dogs hair cut- and he said they would call me in 3 to 4 hours for pick up (standard time for grooming). 4 hours later they call me and I ask if my dog is ready for pick up. The groomer says no- that he began grooming my dog and that he couldn't complete the service because Toby was moving too much. So I asked if they expect me to pay for an incomplete haircut and they said no, they would not be charging me- but the dog needs to go home. Toby has had at least 10 haircuts with petco in the last 3 years, and this has never happened. I have never had a groomer complain about his behavior. My dog currently looks ridiculous. I was able to secure an appointment at the location I usually go to, but not until mid September, so he's just going to look silly until then. I recently took my dog to Petco for a grooming session, and I am extremely disappointed with the service. I specifically asked for a trim, but they ended up cutting my dog's hair way too short. When I was dropping my dog the lady checked his body and verified there is no matting and that they are able to just trim. It was not what I requested at all, and my poor dog looks uncomfortable and depressed now. Even they cut his hair unevenly, some parts are longer some parts super short that I can see his pink skin. I took my dog - a Golden Retriever - in for a shampoo and haircut on 08-04-2022. The groomer was named Capriesha. Historically I'd taken my dog for grooming to an expensive boutique groomer in Sausalito and admittedly I was a little skeptical that I'd get the same quality of cut at a Petco. I was pleasantly surprised what a great job Capriesha did!! The hair cut was perfect - removing the overgrown undercoat while leaving the classic Golden Retriever features (loin's main, longer tail hair, etc.) exactly as they should be, trimmed just the right amount. Of the dozen or so haircuts my dogs had in her life this is hands down the best. I will definitely be going back and requesting Capriesha by name - from my experience she's very good at what she does. read more

Complete lack of organization. I would not recommend this location for grooming services as they seem to be unable to honor appointments. We have had probably 2/3 of our appointments over the past 2 years canceled by the salon the morning of the appointment, or we drop our dog off and they end up leaving him in the kennel all day and then send him home without his haircut. I booked a grooming appointment two weeks in advance. I received three confirmation emails and four text messages confirming my appointment. Each one said I had to give at lease 24 hours notice to cancel. But this petco calls me less than an hour before my appointment to tell me their groomer isn't coming in, They don't have an opening at any other time, sorry, bye?!?! I had to drive in from Oakland and came early to ensure we weren't late for the appointment. I get staffing issues but not even the slightest effort to rectify the situation- when I asked if they could check other locations to see if there are openings I was told no, I can't do that. I mean, you could call, but you won't is more accurate. No remedy of any kind - no offer for a discount on services next time, no coupon for a purchase - the person that called even had an attitude when I explained we were already here just waiting for them to open. Lesson learned, I'll stick with independent service providers that actually value their customers time and patronage. read more
