I've passed Bernal Beast many times on my walks with my new dog, Little Bear. Curious about their training, I noticed the classes I was eyeing were full, so I decided to go for an "Ask the Trainer" private session--and I'm so glad I did. First, let me tell you--you are in good hands! Erika and Stephanie (who I assume run the training program) were incredibly kind when I messed up my booking and went out of their way to help. When Little Bear and I finally met Erika, it was fireworks by the end of the session. Erika is incredibly patient with both me and my dog. She demonstrated new techniques, reviewed some we already knew, and helped build my confidence without overwhelming me. And let's not sleep on the store itself! The staff at Bernal Beast are always friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. They spoil Little Bear with treats and offer great advice without any pushy sales. I can't recommend this place enough, nor can I encourage you enough to work with Erika (and Stephanie, who I imagine is just as wonderful) and dedicate a little time to your fur baby. Those of us who are committed to urban homesteading and keeping backyard chickens, heritage and rare breeds fall in love with our flocks and find the trouble and effort to care and protect them from predators nothing compared to the joy they bring to our lives. I love this store because it carries high-quality organic feed for my girls. It is always fresh and it is easy to reach the store by phone to make sure they have what I need in stock. They even offer to reserve a bag for me so I know it will be available to pick up when I come in. The staff is very friendly, and knowledgable, and it has always been quick and easy to reach them by phone and no wait when I go in person to the store. Best quality animal feed, and treats at very good prices. They offer delivery service only to the very small immediate area of the store and I live in Twin Peaks, perhaps a mile outside of the official delivery zone. Without a car, it is very tricky to pick up heavy bags of animal feed to transport back to my house and an option to deliver even at additional cost to me would make them an even better solution esp in less safe wet weather. I need to be more organized to plan as other sources deliver only with advanced notice (such as family-owned best source for all-things backyard chicken supplies Judychicken.com store of Mill Valley Chickens farm - A+++ delivery with a fee depending on distance and advanced notice. Tell them I referred you.). Fresh animal feed cannot be stockpiled or it gets stale and attracts rodents, and this is why I find the regular need for access to in-stock feed for my chickens. Within San Francisco, Bernal Beast is a valuable source of in-stock organic feed for my chickens as long as I'm able to pick it up. Willingness to be flexible in delivering slightly outside the neighborhood and accommodate clients who are unable to safely pick up and transport heavy bags of feed would make this a 5-star review, and in the meantime I continue transporting 25 - 45 pound bags of feed strapped with bungee cords to my electric scooter, up and down the steep streets between Bernal Heights and Twin Peaks, to feed my flock freshly milled organic layer crumble. I've been a good customer and asked at least three times for delivery slightly outside the delivery zone to accommodate my needs so that I'm not having to put myself in harm's way to access organic animal feed. Despite a refusal to accommodate my needs, I still give them 4 stars! I value our small independent businesses and believe it is worth doing what we can to support them to ensure they thrive in our community. I try to have reasonable expectations and actively refer others to local small businesses. Accommodation to the needs of the local customer base though is helpful, even in times of robust business. A willingness to be flexible when possible and warranted, can preserve good will and matters more than we realize. read more

The manager of this store took two complimentary bags of special keto dog food and a bottle of goat milk that a premium food company sent for my dog who has seizures. He claimed he didn't know they were for a customer, which didn't make sense at all. After he told me that he took my products, he made excuses rather than suggesting to fix the situation for me. He literally said "not my problem." I would have thought the appropriate response would have been "I'm so sorry, I'll make this right for you." UPDATE: I found out this morning that the food company did inform the manager, Dylan, and one of the owners that the products were for me. Conclusion: not only did Dylan take keto food meant for a dog with seizures, but he lied about it and was rude. read more

I love this store for so many reasons! Firstly, the owners are incredibly warm and knowledgeable. They have food for all of our animals, including our chickens, which is so convenient. Also, Steph and Erika both lead amazing dog training sessions. Our pup has responded so well to the techniques they have showed us so far. The staff here are always enthusiastic about helping and can get you connected with what you need. A few of the younger staff members offered to carry out the heavy bags of pet food to my car down the street since I'm pregnant, which was really nice! They have a great variety of pet food brands and the size of the store makes it easy to find everything. They have a nice variety of natural dog treats, toys, beds, training gear, leashes, and so on. We got a really nice harness here, that was recommended by Steph, which immediately stopped our dog from pulling on walks. I'm always happy to support small businesses like Bernal Beast who truly value their customers by providing excellent service and products. Note: this store is under new ownership as of the last month or so. I wasn't a customer before but going in recently I had a very positive experience with lots of friendly service. If you need to self-groom your doggie/use a dog wash station, I highly recommend Bernal Beast. Their equipment is top notch and reasonably priced...best of all, open during a pandemic! Our dogs were looking rough and needed some wash and undercoat removal...we removed half a dog worth of fur in their shop with no hate. I did sweep it up for them because I feel guilty leaving a huge mess like that...but it was awesome. Dogs feel so much better. read more

After having to return the second extra-small puppy harness I got for my puppy off Amazon because it didn't fit correctly, I finally decided to bite the bullet and shop the olden way. And you know what? It was a billion times better. They found the perfect harness for her and helped me fit it on her little 6 lb body. I also picked up a microfleece sweater for those foggy SF days. The staff was amazing with my slightly anxious puppy and let her walk around on the puppy side by herself so she could stretch her legs after being in the car carrier. They helped me find the best sized No-Hides for her tiny mouth. She was thrilled. They also told me about the puppy socials and classes they had and we signed up for Tricks class with Erika. It's now my favorite part of the week. Lychee's figured out to spin, ring a bell, go up a platform, bow and jump through hoops. She's 5 months. She's a super genius and Erika's a super instructor! The store is great, but nothing special. The staff is super friendly and they have all different kinds of treats for your four-legged friends. When it comes to training however, that's where the real sparkle is for this place is. Steph and Erika are *incredible*; They are kind and patient as you describe behaviors you're seeing with your pup. They offer their thoughts and plural approaches to get the behavior that you desire. I've really loved working with both of these women and can't speak more highly of them. I can't wait to attend more workshops with them as my little pup matures. It should be noted that when I got my puppy, I really struggled to find trainers that I both liked and *heard* me when I said that I'm a really engaged dog owner and invest a lot of time into training. It's true that you get what you put into it with dogs, and working with Steph and Erika can get you on the right path. read more

You can also be guaranteed to find that one of a kind plush or toy for your pooch at the local pet stores versus their chain competitors. Service is also a factor for me shopping locally because the owners always knows their inventory. Bernal Beast is a really cool pet store that's like a "general store" for dogs. They sell everything from dog food to dog toys to offering a regular weekly once a week low cost vaccination program for the neighborhood. When I was here - all of their dog and cat toys were 30% off - and I bought a Tennis Ball Launcher for my "busy bee" dog for about $11. It was a deal! I also found a cute round pink dog bed but they only made it for dogs under 25 lbs. I have a dog who is about 100 lbs plus! Kind of worked out since I am not a big fan of PINK but I thought gee -- that would be a conversational piece whenever my friends and family comes over for a visit and maybe they will sit on it too! Oh I almost forgot to mention that Bernal Beast also have tons of organic treats some locally provided by local dog bakers in the neighborhood. We visited Bernal Beast for the first time, just minutes after adopting our sweet pup, with only the leash we left the shelter with. They were incredibly helpful making us all feel comfortable, giving our little pup treats while she roamed around the store with us. They set us up with everything we needed for a puppy starter kit. Bernal Beast is still a favorite of ours, and although we don't live nearby, we make it a point to come in and get some treats or dog food every couple months. The staff at Bernal Beast are incredibly helpful and friendly. When I saw them interact with Ruggles and other dogs, it was very apparent immediately that they were dog lovers. The store has a great selection of dog food, cat food, toys, treats, leashes, etc etc. However, the prices really seemed a bit high to me (although I'm new to the buying-everything-my-dog-could-possibly-want world). I was so happy to discover that Bernal Beast carried a LID (limited ingredient diet) dry cat food that was 1/2 of the price that I was paying for a prescription brand through the SPCA. When you have a pet with special dietary needs (my cat recently developed IBD), getting your hands on the right food can be difficult. You can get prescription food, but that option is generally the most costly and inconvenient. Bernal Beast carries a variety of higher-end pet foods that are not only better for your pet's health, but are surprisingly affordable. We have been going to Bernal Beast for about 7 months now and we highly recommend it. Stephanie and Alan, the two owners are true animal lovers and very kind. On the day we adopted our dog, Coco, we stopped by Bernal Beast in the evening, only to find out the store was closed already. We were standing around at the door for a couple of minutes deciding where we should go. Alan spotted us from across the street and ran back to the store to tell us the shop is closed, but after he learned that we have just adopted our dog, he re-opened the shop for us because he could not turn us away on our adoption day. Alan gave us so many good recommendations. Ever since then, we always love our experience at Bernal Beast. They give us personalized recommendations without ever pressuring to buy anything and our dog loves the store so much she will never pass the store without being allowed to go in. Even if we don't allow her to go in, Alan or Stephanie spots her and comes out to give her snacks and love. They are genuinely very kind. I ordered a large (expensive) bag of dog food from Bernal Beasts on June 15th. On June 16th I got an email saying from Jason stating they couldn't fulfill the order until later and asking if I wanted to keep or cancel the order. I wrote back right away saying I needed the dog food sooner and to please cancel the order but I looked forward to being a customer in the future. It has been more than a week since and I have not heard from anyone at Bernal Beasts regarding the cancelled order. I have not received a refund or the dog food either. I have not gotten a response to any of my emails and cannot get answer when I call the shop. When someone takes your money and doesn't provide the products or services, I believe that is called stealing. read more

Customer service is important and my first visit it was excellent. My trainer recommended a specific harness and my dogs size was right on the border. While I found the harness online, I wanted to try it on her before purchasing. Searching online I found that Bernal Beasts had the harness, so across the bridge I trek to find and try on the harness. I found it received excellent customer service. During that visit, I shopped around and found another item I wanted for my pooch but they did not have it in my dogs size. No problem, they were getting an order soon they would give me a call when it came in. Yesterday, I went back across the bridge to pick up the jacket. I was treated like an intruder. "No, nothing on hold! Well, (huff) let's see if we have it." No pleasantries of my last visit. Therefore,I did not shop around nor will I visit to this small business again. read more

Time for an update on the best pet store in the city! My cat only eats small cans of chicken Applaws and it has been discontinued (or never offered) as a sale item in the stores in SF.
