Prime Paw killed my 9 week old puppy on her first day of puppy school. I picked up my mini longhaired dachshund, Olive, on Sunday May 19th, 2024. After some serious vetting of puppy schools, referrals from friends, and with approval from her vet, I was led to Prime Paw puppy school. They had rave reviews, and I have quite a few friends that had sent their 9 week old puppies to them as well with glowing reviews, so I reached out. We had an initial consultation to discuss Olive's age, size, and weight, and what the puppy day school could offer for her. During that call, they guaranteed me she would only be with other puppies of the same vaccination rate (signed off and approved by her vet before anyone comes for me there), and that due to her size of 3.5lbs she would only be with puppies of equal sizing, constantly monitored, and kept away from the larger puppies at all times, only briefly exposed to them for socialization purposes. Everyone I had talked to including the vet and various trusted pet owners, agreed sending her to be socialized at this age was well worth the incredibly minimal risk of anything happening to her. This was my first puppy, and I did what I believed was right in the moment to give her a good start. With endless reassurance she would be safe, I left her in the care of Prime Paw on the morning of Thursday May 30th. I got a call about 2.5 hours later that there was an accident with another puppy and I needed to come to the SPCA vet next door to Prime Paw. On the way there, I called again to ask how serious it was and what happened. The owner, James, wouldn't give me any details. Just said they tried to perform CPR and that she didn't make it. When I arrived, they told me she had been playing with a nearly 20-25lb bernadoodle puppy and "we don't know what happened, we didn't see it". They only heard my girl yelp in pain, then crawl to a corner and stop breathing. The vet said she was dead on arrival from pneumothorax, essentially a collapsed lung caused by blunt force trauma + impact, presumably from this other much larger dog. James, the owner, is completely incompetent to be running a business caring for puppies at this age or size. His bedside manner during the process in the vet's office was abhorrent, telling me he had a bad feeling about the day because his apartment flooded or something. He asked the vet to walk him through his 'procedures' and tell him he did everything right. I had to tune him out as I was in such shock of his comments while having to answer questions about my poor pups cremation and if I wanted her prints preserved. After I said I would be seeking compensation for the cost of the dog and all of her expenses and vet bills, he offered puppy classes for my next puppy 'when I'm ready'. An empty gesture, that only made me want to vomit at the thought. My puppy just died under his watch and he can only think about wanting my business back. I feel this was completely preventable on Prime Paw's part, and they were truly negligent in their care for Olive. An anonymous employee who was there shared with me that the bernadoodle had been having problems with smaller pups in the days prior and the negligence towards the puppies was becoming an increasing concern. They assured me countless times she would be ok under their care with her age, size, and weight, and she didn't even make it past the first half day. Video posted to their IG stories shows my dog with a large cut on her back, one I did not send her there with. Why would they continue to let her play, let alone unsupervised, in a pen with a much larger dog if she was already injured? They claim there are no videos of the incident as they do not have cameras, and again, 'nobody saw what actually happened'. I was hesitant to try Primepaw initially because there were some "bad" reviews. No place is perfect, and you can't please everyone and you shouldn't judge a place just by a review. I reached out to other puppy schools in the SF area, but no one was responsive and proactive so I decided to go with Primepaw. The location isn't the "gentrified" SF areas some people are used to, but this is the perfect location for dogs. There are so many other resources in this area that you can utilize and knowledge share with your friends. Parking can be rough, but if you wait a few minutes, someone will be coming back to their car after dropping off their puppy and you can swoop right in. I love that Primepaw lets one person in at a time because it helps the puppy calm down a little instead of having the stimulation of 5 puppies in the same room while you're trying to check in, and put your puppy's stuff away in her box. Katsu is always dragging me to come inside, and will just stand there when she knows I'm picking her up. She's always super willing to jump into my car and out of my car in the morning when we are going to school, but she will refuse to jump into my car and jump out when I am taking her home. She just wants to go back to see her trainers and friends! I had my golden retriever Katsu attend the puppy school for the initial 12 sessions. I realized that she was LOVING the classes and the interactions she was getting. I ended up upgrading to the 20 session class. Why stop something positive right? I could instantly see a change in her behavior and she finally started to listen to me. My family members saw a shift in behavior as well when I would bring her back to visit on random weekends. She learned sit, touch, come, down, place and to look at me. I believe having her come to Primepaw also enabled her to learn more at home when I did want to teach her something new. I always appreciate the small things, and I noticed that they will help take the harness off Katsu in the morning when she sprints into class, and will help put it back on at the end of the day so I can have a more seamless pick up. They always give you a small summary of how she was doing today which is something every puppy parent wants to hear. Remember, just because your puppy is training in school, it doesn't mean you don't bring the homework back. You have to continue reinforcing these behaviors at home, and Primepaw provides you tools to do so. During pick up, the trainers are always available to answer any questions you have. I like to talk to them about her behaviors at home, things I've noticed, things I would like Katsu to do, and things that I am having issues with. They always provide you with options on how to remedy different behaviors and to reinforce good ones. Every time I listened to their instructions, there is a positive behavior change. One of my favorite things that they do is the daily report cards. I get a snapshot of Katsu's day and what she worked on/what she needs to work on. I love getting photos and videos of her because I see how happy she is. I really suggest having your puppy start here at Primepaw. I've had a wonderful experience here with the trainers Katsu definitely learned a lot. I am so grateful to the PrimePaw team. My puppy was enrolled in their puppy school for two months. Going in, I had been looking for a puppy daycare and wasn't really looking for the training aspect because we were doing a lot at home, but saw it as a nice bonus. I couldn't have been more wrong. My puppy has progressed by leaps and bounds through their training program. She's happy to be in her crate or puppy pen while I'm working and has learned to settle herself down when I can't give her attention (like cooking dinner). Five months ago, I rescued a 10-month-old Great Dane who had a traumatic and limited start to her life. We picked her up and brought her home to our 3rd story walk-up, only to discover she didn't know how to go up or down stairs. And at 100 unwieldy pounds, I wasn't about to try to carry her upstairs, so we moved the car and camped in the garage with her, as I did my best to teach her how to go up and down stairs--with limited success. James, one of Prime Paw's truly excellent trainers, came after the doggo and I spent 7 days hanging out in the garage 24 hours a day, for a desperately needed emergency intervention. His can-do, "just let me show you how" approach was exactly what we needed, and even more amazing, one hour later he had me and the doggo upstairs and confident we could go downstairs and back up to the apartment when the necessary evening bathroom break was scheduled. It was an amazing and inspiring start, and really, if James hadn't arrived, we probably would have had to return her. Ever since that first day with James, we have had Prime Paw trainers in our house every week, working with us and our rescue, helping us learn how to teach a very large and completely untrained adolescent Great Dane how to be a good companion, housemate, and friend. Short version: Cut off services less than 24hrs notice due to abrupt change in policy, failed to communicate change in policy in a professional and timely manner. We would not discourage people from seeking their services but in the end were saddened by the poor treatment after having invested so much time with their company + trainers. Back in June they abruptly cut off services for their off-leash adventures with less than 24hrs notice because of a change in policy that they no longer were accepting intact dogs. The email told us vet waits were long but we could take Milo to a vet outside of the city to be neutered... just wow! They said it was because other dogs would be aggressive with our dog but they had never had an issue with *our* dog. I asked if they could please give us until the end of the week so we could have time to find other arrangements, they said yes then failed to pick him up the next day or the day after and never reached out after the mistake. We asked to speak to James to understand the concerns around intact dogs. We were told to call at 3pm, we did, left a message, never got a response, emailed, no response. 2 weeks later James finally called out of the blue and left a message. As new dog owners we wanted to understand where they were coming from, particularly because our vet recommended we wait until 18 months to neuter our dog to prevent bone/development issues with our pup. He was 8 months at the time services were cut off. Bottom line -they have operations issues that were always apparent to us from the beginning. We gave them a lot of flexibility, my partner owns a small business and we know how hard it can be. Ultimately we were so, so disappointed at how we were treated in the end and as a result are unlikely to seek out their services in the future, particularly given their position on intact dogs, how are you going to force people to fix their dogs before it is medically safe to do so? Give em a try, we want them to succeed! Just know that their business operations can be incredibly frustrating to deal with. read more

We went to three puppy playtime sessions led by the owner james. We were literally seconds away from throwing thousands of dollars at primepaw but decided to go to our fourth session first. The fourth session was led by another trainer and was completely different than the first three. The trainer was terrible at communicating and unlike james, had absolutely no patience with the puppies and was borderline insulting when talking to the owners. She was clearly stressed and had no business leading that portion of playtime. We ended up leaving a little early since our puppy was sick and the instructor seemed to have great joy in telling us and another dog to leave. Afterward james told us to email him and he would comp us a session. We were still leaning toward signing up for more sessions but james completely ignored our emails for weeks. When he finally responded, he ignored our concerns and pathetically insisted the fourth session was the same as the first three. We even ran into another owner later that week who confirmed how horrible that instructor was. The biggest takeaway is that while james is an amazing trainer, he is horrible at training his employees and even worse with customer service. All we wanted was the shortest email that acknowledged our concerns with the inconsistencies in training and we would've happily signed up our dog for more classes. There are a ton of these services around the city and would highly recommend going to any of them over primepaw. Consistency is so important with dog training and if you can't provide something so basic as having your trainers teach dogs the same principles than you shouldn't be running a dog training business. read more

I adopted Chocolate at the end of November 2022 from the SPCA when he was 12 weeks old. The following week, I started him at Prime Paw puppy school and, within a very short time, he was sitting, lying down, settling beautifully, walking on a leash, playing well with other puppies and generally becoming the well-rounded puppy he has turned out to be. We are so overjoyed we found Primepaw and started working with them for our pup. Our pup absolutely LOVES going and all of his friends (pups and human friends alike). When we adopted pup at 3 months, he was fearful and nervous, and we really weren't sure we were giving pup the right training to help him. Pup has been at puppy school for a month now and has really come out of his shell, learned good behaviors with other dogs. I've been using Prime Paw for about 2 months now and I'm very happy with them. My pup, the wonderful Mini Bull Terrier, Odin, started with Prime Paw when he was about 5 months old. I met James, the owner of Prime Paw, during SFSPCA's Adolescent Playgroup. James is very good with dogs and you can tell that he genuinely enjoys spending time with and training them. He is passionate about what he does, which is important. For the on-boarding process, James came to visit our apartment, got to know Odin (e.g., any special needs/requests, temperament, activity level, etc.), and we filled out some basic paperwork (e.g., vaccines, payment terms, emergency contacts, insurance, etc.). No arm-twisting, one-sided, or unfair contracts. Prime Paw is fully licensed, insured, and bonded. James is always reliable, with the same pick-up and drop-off window daily, so it's easy to manage Odin's potty schedule (as well as my own work schedule). One of the best things about Prime Paw is that James builds in basic training/obedience in his walks (e.g., name game, recall) so you get a better trained AND well-exercised dog at the end of the day. More bang for your buck. I also like the fact that my pup gets to run and hike around outdoors, instead of being trapped in an indoor facility with no sun. For Odin, he goes to Bernal Heights Park almost every morning with more or less the same set of dogs in his pack. James ensures that each pack is "harmonious," that the dogs get along with each other within the pack. James supervises the play to ensure that the dogs are only having positive interactions/plays. At the end of each day, James will email you pictures of your pup on their adventure of the day. She attended a 20-session puppy program where she learned the basics like sitting and also mat / crate time, play time and socialization. The Primepaw team is amazing, personable, friendly and fun! Positive reinforcement is their teaching philosophy and we saw a difference with Skyler on day 1! The team knew her better than us. They adapted the training lesson to her needs (crate time and separation anxiety). They sent us daily reports and provided clear homework assignments. I was looking for a dog walker to walk my 18 month rescue Fitzy, and reached out to several dog operators. Not only did a lot of them not get back to me, but of those that did, I interviewed them and even test trialed them all with disappointment! I felt the majority of the dog operators just wanted to get the dog out to be able to charge the client, and wasn't really considering the welfare of my dog, his demeanor or needs, especially given that almost all of the owner operators advertised themselves as "dog trainer certified" plus other dog accreditations. That is until I found Prime Paw! James, the owner first met with me to understand mine and Fitzy's needs. He was trained and also volunteered at the SPCA and myself being someone who also volunteers at the SPCA, I immediately felt a little more at ease with James handling my dog. James is super patient with my pup, and he knew how to approach Fitzy without a) scaring him away and b) building confidence in him. He does a trial week to get to know the dog, and determine how to 'place' them with the rest of the pack. James is super dependable and reliable, as well as very punctual! I can already see that Fitzy is more at ease with other people and looks forward to getting on his play/walks with the rest of the pack. The best is that James sends a litle snippet at the end of each play/walk session so you can see how much fun the dogs actually had. We've raised four dogs in the past thirty plus years, large and small, but knew we were in over our heads with our new pup Hank. We enrolled our 10 week old Husky mix into Primepaw's 12 session puppy school and so appreciate the care they've provided, we've added more days. The advice, training and feedback we've received has changed the nature of our relationship with Hank.
