I know this is a major retail chain but despite that have had mostly positive experiences here. Sometimes it can take a long while to check out but staffing is an issue for every business so I get that. The strongest positive I can say about this store is that it is where my wife and I have bought our ferrets. They have been healthy and happy in both the sense of when we bought our lovely pets but also anytime we have seen others here available to purchase they have seemed to be well treated and healthy. I know this cannot always be said for some of these major pet chain stores. They do offer a selection of ferret accessories as well such as hammocks/toys/food for some examples. The staff have been friendly during our interactions and try their best to help when we have questions. The store is kinda outdated in some sense and could be cleaned up in some places too. DO NOT take your pet there for vaccinations. I was in line for my dog - Jax - to get his shots. There was an owner with a kitten in front of me. I was already hesitant because no one acknowledged me and the vet (woman - short gray hair) looked at me and walked away. I was told I would have paperwork to fill out - nothing! The owner of the kitten went to the exam area (open area) and the vet was dismissive of her questions- she said she needed to draw blood - there were 2 techs with the vet. THIS VET POKED THAT KITTEN 4 times and STILL COULDN'T hit a vein. All I could hear was that kitten crying out. The whole store heard it!!! The vet just didn't care - she was going to keep on going until she was confronted with her ineptitude- then she started yelling. Other customers were visibly upset and said they would never go there for any kind of pet services. DO NOT GO THERE! read more

The store itself is really grungy and the service is either nonexistent or poor. They carry a food supplement that my 16 year old dog needs. I've made the 40 minute trip to the Mallside location twice and was disappointed both times. The first time I searched high and low for the item or someone to help me and found neither. After going up and down every aisle in the store I decided to wait in line and ask the person at the register. They apparently keep this particular supplement up at the register--the cashier grabbed a box and handed it to me. I cashed out and went on my way. The next time I time I knew the drill so I waited in line and when I told the cashier what I was looking for she quickly told me that they didn't have it --she didn't check, look it up, or ask anyone else and was just going to send me on my way. Disappointed, I started to walk out and spotted it at the register closest to the door so I went back and pointed it out. No apology, etc, she shrugged and then asked for my phone number. Knowing I didn't plan to go back, I told her no, and she told me if I didn't give my phone number the item would be $5 more! This place is filthy and the service is terrible. We drive over 50 minutes to get to this location for salt water fish. The salt tanks are the best cared for in the state and their prices are a lot better than any other Petco I have ever been in. The fish staff are highly knowledgeable as well. I have not had issues with fish from this location but was surprised to find out (from a terrible experience at the Augusta Maine store) salt water fish are not able to be returned in the event they pass away per corporate policy. This but of knowledge has me deterred from buying salt fish from Petco however this stores fish are super healthy and well taken care of I know I can trust them from this store and will travel here for my salt fish needs again in the future! Chi I think was his name who helped us, he was awesome to work with and was very helpful, he stated he was also a hobbyist as well which is how it should be if you are working in a fish section! read more

We haven't had a very good experience with the grooming department. It's not the quality of the grooming, but more so the customer experience and how much of a hassle it can be to book appointments. It's difficult to get through on the phone and sometimes requires many calls and messages to schedule an appointment. We've also had them cancel on us--I understand that things happen, but also feel Petco could do more to make customers feel valued. read more

We shop here regularly and the staff are always helpful and friendly. We also recently used the Vetco clinic for the first time to get our dog's shots and it was a great experience. The Vetco clinic has a really efficient online booking system, which meant we could get an appointment almost immediately. (This is not the case at other vets around the city, where appointments seem very hard to come by.) The clinic is really just a small area of the store, but this works great -- it's efficient and does the job just fine. The vet and the assistant who helped us were kind and practical and easily managed our wiggly young dog. Would definitely recommend for competent, reasonably-priced vet services, and will return in the future. read more

Awful, awful, awful. I never visit Petco but regularly order online. The store is filthy, especially the entrance area before you get in the actual store. I simply had to return a couple of bags of dog food I ordered online. One bag was open and the other was not. Unfortunately my dog was recently diagnosed with pancreatitis and can't tolerate the super high quality food I purchased him. I waited in the long line and finally it was my turn. The cashier was super friendly and understood the pancreatitis situation and the fact he can't have the food, thus I needed to return it. The return policy is 30 days after receipt but the only date we had was the order date. She understood that I didn't receive the food the same day I ordered it so I needed a couple days of wiggle room to get my true 30 days. "No big deal" she exclaimed, however she did need a manager to override it. The manager is called over and immediately tells the cashier to do something else. I re-explained the situation and the manager told us we were trying to return "way outside of the return window, it's October and you ordered it in August". To be clear, it was October 1 and I purchased the food on August 29. Yes I was outside of the return window but remember those 2 days I should have been afforded for shipping? Not according to this big boss lady. I took the bags of food and said I'm never shopping at your store again. Look, 2 days outside of the return window or not, the manager belittled the cashiers decision and promises I'd already been made. Remember, "it will be no big deal". I just wanted the $50 back for the 2 bags of food because I had to turn around and buy more. Ugh. read more

My dog goes crazy when we pull up to Petco, she loves it so much. The staff is very friendly and many of them greet my dog by name. I always appreciate the rubs and cookies that they give her. The store offers many amenities: a treat bar, puppy training classes (which we took), grooming (which we get), and also a self service dog wash. They also have a good selection of clearance items. Yesterday, we were using the fog wash when my fog escaped. So I panic and start chasing her through the store. The entire staff sprung into action and the crisis was averted in less than 30 seconds. We wanted to leave this review for the Grooming Team at the Petco in South Portland, Maine. We have been going to this location since our dog, Izzy was a puppy; just shy of 4 years now. Izzy is a Golden Doodle and as many doodle owners know, they require grooming every 6-8 weeks. Every time we bring Izzy there she is excited, greeted by name, and made to feel at home. She is roughly there for 4 hours depending on how fast her coat has grown. The staff works very hard to ensure your fur baby is safe, loved, and groomed properly. They go over everything with you beforehand (as stated before, we are frequent flyers and each time they still confirm everything)! They are respectful and professional. They will even wash your dog's collar if you ask! We have read some of the reviews, which has compelled us to write our own experience. From the looks of it, some customers blow things way out of proportion; but each is entitled to their own opinion. We can't even begin to imagine the stress the grooming team is under; we have witnessed first hand customers being rude to staff and they respond in a very polite manner (not easy to do when you are being yelled at for things that are out of your own control; like in this case- scheduling). It is not their fault they are short staffed, in fact... the current staff there deserves a raise in our opinion. No one should be treated poorly when they are just trying to do their very best. Finally, we'd like to acknowledge one individual who has created such a bond with our Izzy, and that is Janelle O. Janelle, thank you for introducing Izzy to grooming and making it a positive experience for her. Thank you for making sure she is safe, well groomed, and most importantly, loved. It is very reassuring knowing that Izzy is in the best hands when we leave her to be groomed with Janelle. Every time Izzy hears "Janelle" she runs to the door because she knows she's going to see her best buddy! Thank you for treating her as if she were your own pup. To corporate Petco, continue to do a great job with training and please reward those teammates who do an outstanding job. Made an appointment online for grooming services at 5:00, and on the day of I received a text that they do not have time for my dog unless I bring him earlier. I told them I could rearrange my schedule for this and they can groom him between 3:30-5:30. Then I received multiple text messages with continuous questions about the services (which I have never experienced before, and I had already filled out the paperwork online). I then got a messages saying that the price of just a a bath would be $90, which is twice the amount of the services that I booked for online, my dog does not need to be deshedded or anything like that. It seems to me that the groomer was doing whatever they could to get me to cancel the appointment and leave early. read more

Grooming only/ staff did not listen to owners advice I brought my dog in for grooming and he is not a fan of his nails clipped, but does not mind the grinder, so I told the staff this and asked them not to clip his nails. They told me they would not clip them that they would only use the grinder. Later, I got a phone call that he is done and that he would not let them do his nails because he got too nervous and that he was not welcome back to grooming there. I pick him up and the one paw they were able to trim it was super clear that they used clippers and not the grinder, so of course my dog got too nervous. (He spun in a circle avoiding the clippers and peed himself.. he did not bite anyone) The information was already out there that he does not do well with clippers! I am furious because this is very traumatizing for him, the staff at petco for their own safety and for the safety of peoples dogs should listen to the owners because they know them best. read more

This is in regard to the grooming services only. I've taken my Golden Retriever to Petco in different states for years now (Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Illinois). They've all been capable of trimming him properly, according to his build, body type, and breed, without me providing specifics. I recently took him in to this location earlier this month for a bath and trim. He was clean, alright - but if they trimmed anything, I'd like to see where. I expected to see what is typically done: ears trimmed, both inside and outside, and cleaning up/feathering of the back of the front legs, underbody, chest, back of thighs and the tail. None of this was done. I'll be going elsewhere to find someone who knows more about proper breed grooming. Side note: Petco asks if you want to tip before you even get to see your dog. If I'd have seen him first, I wouldn't have left the tip that I did. I think we should be allowed to pick up our pets before having to pay/tip for the services. read more

I does not shock me at all that this Petco only has a two star rating! They sell defective fish to kids. My 17 year old bought a fish without me next to him, and then he drove 40 miles to return it after it did not move for 5 days and they would not exchange it because I was not there, even though he bought it without me and had the receipt. I even called and face timed to authorize the exchange. They quoted Maine law, yet did not follow Maine law when the purchase was made, but then required a parent to be there when it had to be exchanged. We had no idea as this protocol was not used in the purchase of the fish. The customer service from the employees and manager was horrible and we will never buy a product from that store again! read more

My dog Winston and I have been loyal Petco customers for over a decade. I recently moved to the Portland, ME area and schedule a grooming appointment via the Petco website. I received a call back about 20 minutes later with someone explaining that they cannot groom my dog because he has a heart murmur (a very common issue in small breed dogs). My dog has had a heart murmur for several years now is completely stable. Nobody would know he has any underlying issues because his overall demeanor and behavior are unchanged. He has been groomed several dozen times (concurrent with the said condition) without any issue whatsoever. Instead of contacting his previous Petco groomer and/or reviewing his notes, they declined the grooming appointment. I asked to speak with the manager and got put on hold and eventually hung up on. I left a voicemail for someone to call me back and this individual returned the call and was hesitant to groom him. Eventually, she said that he could come in for a consult, but at this point, I think I am going to seek services from another business. This is completely disappointing because he had a very good relationship with his previous groomer @ Petco Topsfield (Mass.) and I have no doubt it would have been the same. read more

Incredibly understanding, patient and positive would be the way that I would describe Micayla. She was good natured as my four-legged wanted to run away. I quit going here years ago after a particularly awful customer service experience that ended with me having to speak to someone in India who basically told me to go screw myself. I planned never to return. I had an aquarium start leaking last week, and called around to discover that Petco was the only place offering the same size. The place was full of employees but nobody came to help, so I had to pick up and maneuver a 40-gallon tank to the counter by myself. I checked out and asked whether I might use a cart to get it to my car. Not only was there no offer to help, but it was a no on the cart, too. I'm 6 feet tall, 220 pounds, and work out an hour a day. I ended up pulling muscles in my stomach trying to fit the heavy tank into the car alone. Stay away from this place if you have any choice. read more

This place is great, if you have a baby in tow, anyway. We ended up walking around to kill time after visiting the party store next door. We didn't buy anything (because the things you need seemed overpriced, the natural cat food choices were lacking, and we'd rather buy local), but we spent a good half an hour showing all the mice, rats, birds and fish to our 10 month old and he had a blast. It's like a free zoo. It may even be better than that wildlife refuge in Gray. Other than that fun, it's a stinky store and people bring dogs in that have no manners (or can't handle the stimulation) and the checkout line is long (but that didn't matter because we didn't buy anything). read more

This was my third or fourth time coming here. The first time I came, I was told they don't do appointments, but if you show up without calling, you're treated as if you're a huge hassle and they make you feel terrible for even showing up and asking if they have time for a service. To be fair, they are always pretty busy, but it seems more like an operational issue than anything else. This alone has made me hesitant to come back, but my last experience with one of the techs there this past weekend was HORRENDOUS. The way my dog was treated makes me wonder who hires these people and if they even have experience with animals at all. I have an 8 year old very big rescue dog. I have brought her twice a year for grooming and more often to have her claws clipped.I've been pleased, there was one time she was cut but that happens. The last grooming they told me she was aggressive when they used the blow dryer. I suggested they not use the dryer next time. I called a few weeks later to have her claws clipped and the manager told me not to bring her in she was vicious. Since, I brought her there since I had her and she has NEVER been vicious, she goes to dog daycare and NEVER a problem.I asked for the manager to check the records and get me a groomer that is not afraid of dogs. I was told Colleen would call me back the next day. It has been two months. I have not returned for grooming or supplies they lost a customer and I would warn others that groomers should know when dogs are scared and treat them instead of being afraid of them and Petco should honor and respect loyal customers by returning phone calls, yes I called twice. read more

Just poor customer retention I bought a decoration for my beta bowl, specific for betas, it was a small plastic statue. After a week or 2 I noticed that my fishes find looked really poor and the statue looked like it had something growing on it. I pulled it out and realize all of the plastic had bubbled up and looked like it might have been leaking something In to the water. I promptly took it out and changed the water but apparently too late since my fish died the next day. I took the statue to petco where they told me that try wouldn't replace my fish because it was the $7 version and not the $2 version unless I brought them a water sample. It's a $7 fish,really!? I highly doubt petco has the ability to test the water correctly even if I hadn't change the water and could bring it in. And I'm pretty sure that would cost more in time and supplies than giving me the $7 fish and keeping me as a customer. Just solodifies my feelings about petco, I'll take the toll to go to petsmart from now on. read more

I am very disappointed in the level of customer service at this store. They were unwilling to accommodate my reasonable request to price match an item from Petco.com- I went out of my way to go to the store to pick up this item only to find out it was not on sale in-store. The manager would not honor the online price as it was an online sale. I understand that online and brick and mortars may have opposing promotions, however, it is STILL the same company- and as a loyal customer for over a decade they should have attempted to make it right. I went as far as to call customer service, they called the store, asked the manager to honor the online price and the customer service rep was even denied. Do they even understand customer service and what it is to be an omni company? Are they even working together? It is 2016 and almost 100% of people shop online. If this company wants to keep customers coming back and does not want to resort to ecommerce only they seriously need to make some adjustments. Physical stores are closing everyday due to the significant growth of online shopping- some advice to Petco- get with the times. Most all successful online & store companies have created a seamless shopping experience for their valued customers AKA they match online pricing. INFACT many omni retailers match competitor pricing. There are even apps to help you locate the best pricing on products. What was so disappointing about my situation was that I wasn't asking them to match a competitor's pricing- I was asking them to match THEIR company's online price. Because I am so frustrated, I would like to encourage all customers who read this to start comparing prices at Petco to other retailers. We picked up our first Gargoyle Gecko a little over a week ago at our local Petco store. Not only, did the sale associate tell us a lot of bad information on how to care for him, she sold us all the wrong products! Made everything a lot more expensive than it needed to be, and almost killed our gecko because of it. After taking our gecko to the vet we have the proper information now, and hopefully did everything in time to save his life. I won't buy another animal from Petco ever again, and will never listen to the employee advise. They need proper training on how to take care of the animals they say they know, because if we hadn't taken our gecko to the vet just in time, he would have died. read more
