This was the second time we had Robert, who is strong enough to handle our very athletic senior boy. I'm not sure how the pricing works, but I have a feeling it has to do by the weight because the last time we went to Petco grooming the price was about $20 less. It takes them 4 hours to groom small/medium dogs. My dog had some mats but they were shaving him down anyway for summer. We had an appointment and showed up three hours later to pick up (when we were told he'd likely be ready) He wasn't. When I asked how much longer the woman instead of just letting me know, she went on about how the groomers have to eat, have bodily functions, other dogs delay for nail trimming etc... I didn't ask anything other than how much longer. Gave me a bad feeling so I won't be taking our dog here any longer. He was ready half hour later. I also paid for the Holiday package and I don't see anything different from a regular groom. Another waste of $30 read more

This is exclusive to the animals that are available for sale -- They do not take proper care of their exotics and I've seen several dead or nearly dead in their enclosures. Mealworms are not appropriate feeder insects for baby bearded dragons because of the hard to digest exoskeletons. That seems to be the only food offered, and the babies are just bones. It's horrifying and so sad. It's a shame that they don't look into hiring people with small animal and exotic animal backgrounds to properly care for these babies before sending them to new homes. Remember: if you purchase the animals they're only going to order more and the cycle will continue. Petco and other major retailers need to focus on selling supplies and supplies only. read more

This review is of the Vetco Animal Hospital located within this Petco store. At an appointment one year ago there was a small mass on my dog's elbow and I was told it was not likely cancerous due but that if it continued to grow I should get it removed early due to the location. That vet, Dr. Laurel Brenton, was very kind and talked me through all the options during the visit. I was so impressed by the care that I did not hesitate to book another appointment even though this location is an hour drive for me. Their booking system and staff are great. This year, I talked with the Veterinarian for maybe 30 seconds, Dr. Kristen Erickson. Instead of discussing options and risks/ benefits of alternatives, the VetTech came in to offer an expensive testing option, no discussion of why, why it wasn't offered last year, or other options. The entire visit was like that - it was weird. I would ask a question of the VetTech, then I would be told what Dr. Erickson said - no chance for discussion - instead of just talking to me directly. Overall, the lack of discussion of alternatives and the risks/ benefits/ costs of different options was extremely disappointing. I expressed my frustration during the visit and they noted that I appeared "annoyed" during the visit on my visit summary instead of actually trying to address or discuss my concerns. That was the final straw - so unprofessional. I am disappointed that this location lost a good doctor and replaced it with someone who doesn't even want to talk to the pet owners. read more

Store is unfortunately run unprofessionally. Waited on line for 20 minutes just to drop my pet off for a previously scheduled appointment. During my wait, groomers present were looking up at me and others standing in line waiting to be serviced and then ignored us. Several other employees from other areas were walking by and no one addressed us at all. Finally I asked to speak with a manager, only to find that he was also up near the front desk fully aware of what was going on and not assisting us until I asked. Manager was unprofessionally dressed and lacked complete awareness of what was happening in his store. To make matters worse, I reached out to Petco online to obtain an email address where I could discuss the situation with a regional manager and the chat agent refused to provide me with this information, stating that she didn't have it. Don't get the private dog training class! Waste of $80. It was a just a friendly young guy repeating what you can read off a typical training website. He didn't try to teach my dog anything. Not sure why I even had to bring my dog. All he did was feed my dog a ton of biscuits and say he's cute. This store has been one of my go-to pet stores for many years, even with Pet Smart now in the general area. It has an excellent selection of a variety of items for your pet fish, hamster, reptile, bird, cat, and/dog. At times it almost seems to be too much to successfully navigate, and it seems a bit biased inside towards fish and dog-related items, but that's quite OK. They have a lot of great deals and very reasonable prices. I enjoy shopping here. I have docked them 1 star because I like how Pet Smart has cats for adoption ongoing at their location. I know Petco has adoption events with local agencies but it would be nice if they had a permanent presence with local animals too. read more

My Peanut loves coming to the ladies here in Poughkeepsie for grooming. I drive almost an hour for him to be groomed here but it is worth the drive. They take good care of him as well as he is so handsome when he is done. The ladies are always so welcoming and friendly. You can tell they love what they do and love the animals that come in. So frustrated. Website states grooming until 7pm. I called the store at 5:30pm to ask how late groomers are there for dog's nails to be trimmed. Employee said 7pm. Left work and rushed to pick up the dog and arrived at 6:05pm. NO GROOMERS! I asked to speak to the manager to see what happened. She was extremely rude and said too late, they left. I told manager that I just called to confirm and YOUR EMPLOYEE told me 7pm. She didn't care. I asked if she would follow through so that the employee would be informed so that it doesn't happen to someone else. I saw the employee who misinformed on the phone. The lease the manager could have done is apologize for their error and ask me to return for a $10 nail clipping at no charge. Nope. Nothing! No ownership of their error and no apology. I have no incentive to return. Will look elsewhere for grooming services. read more

Disclaimer: The reason why I rated this one star is because of a certain employee. I sometimes go to PetCo, they have certain things that Pet Goods or Petsmart doesn't have, but a lot of the time I find it to be a bit pricier. This review is about a bad experience I encountered with an employee, not their products. Today, I went in to ask for a cardboard carrier that small rodents are put into since I was selling my hamster to somebody and was not going to just hand them a hamster without a box. So I asked an older cashier who has been working there for a long time, and she said I had to ask a manager. I didn't know where the manager was, and she went away to attend the long line of customers. I waited and then decided to ask 2 other employees, and they did not make an issue out of giving one to me unlike the cashier did. Then, as I was walking out with the cardboard box, she sees me and stops me, saying I could not take it out. I proceeded to tell her I wanted to speak to the manager, but that never ended up happening, so as I realized she wasted a good 15-20 minutes of my time due to being difficult, I walked out with nothing, frustrated. I have had many occurrences where people I've sold animals to go to PetCo and get a carrier box for it. So why was this an issue today with me? I don't know. I then went to PET GOODS where the employees actually understand customer service and gave me a carrier without making a complication out of it. My experience at PetCo, as a retail employee myself, was very very poor customer service. This isn't the first time I've dealt with a rude employee from there either. read more

Waited 50 minutes to get my dog a rabies vaccination at their Vetco clinic. Because he had a reaction to multiple shots last time I just wanted to get the rabies and come back next week for his other one. Told me they couldn't give me the shot and to go to a full clinic because they don't want to deal with a potential reaction. Instead of talking directly to me they sent their helper over to do the dirty work. It was not up for discussion, even though the reaction happened a full day after last time so at that point what would it matter who gave him the shot! Thanks for being spineless and wasting my valuable time. I will never use Vetco for any of my animals and PetCo by association. read more

This location is very convenient (with parking a'plenty), as it is close to the mall and other shopping centers. The store itself is very clean and orderly, and their selection of products is nice (I only shop for my dog, so I cannot speak for the selection of goods for other animals). Even when I go in for a simple bag or two of food for my cat, I end up perusing the aisles for some new treat, toy, or crazy gadget that my pet will just end up eating or destroying. Wide and fantastic selection of all things pets (cats, dogs, fish, reptiles, birds, etc) that will leave every pet owner (and their pet) satisfied. Their staff is very knowledgeable and always receptive to questions I have. There's a dog grooming area within the store, but I can't attest to the quality as I've never used. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should anyone buy tropical fish from this store. I have a well-established aquarium with fish I've had for as long as 10 years. I bought 2 fish from this place and within 24 hours the entire aquarium was infected with a very contagious and fatal fungal disease. The purchased fish died within 2 days and I've lost one of the other residents of the tank that I've had for 5 years. Several others are becoming very ill, including one of the 10-year old fish. I've called the store and the employee literally had the nerve to tell me "no one has ever complained about the fish". The store manager (Frank Fortnot) has not returned my calls - waiting for 2 days. The corporate office will be notified. read more

Not happy. Usually use PetSmart but I had a coupon and I was in the area so thought I would try PetCo today. Big mistake. Paid for nail buffing and it wasn't done. To top it off, when I complained about how her nails were sharper than when I walked in (they obviously only cut them, awfully), they did not fix it. I didn't get a chance to tell the groomer about the problem because the girl at the front desk kept telling me they were buffed. I was over it... Also, I was told I would be called when my dog was finished but I was never called. I won't be coming back to this location. I have been bringing two of my dogs for grooming services however I cannot say that it has been a good experience. First my older dog was straight up denied grooming services simply because she is an older dog even though she is healthy and fully capable of getting a bath for which I am paying. Now my 5 year old shitzu got denied at the door for the SECOND time because of a knot on her paw. The employee stated that they do not have the equipment to handle her knots, isn't this a pet groomer? Or am I missing something. After trying to plead with the employee I purchased a regular brush at the store, sat in the parking lot with my two month old baby in the back seat and brushed my dogs knots myself. I brought her back in after 40 minutes of brushing completely knot free and the employee took her in for grooming. So what special equipment do they not have that I was able to use a regular brush to get rid of the knots.m? I am just tired of begging the store to groom my dogs, I will be taking my service elsewhere after this. read more

I would give no stars if I could! I bought a cockatiel there in February. He hung around the bottom of his cage looking sad and sick. Closing his eyes a lot and sleeping for hours. No chirping singing or anything. He finally started to perch and while perched he would have to readjust his right foot constantly. I've had bad experiences trying to find a vet for a parakeet with a different pet store because they never had an avian vet in the location so this time I chose to take him (Bruno) to Newburgh Veterinary Hospital in Newburgh NY. The doctor checked him out and said his foot was inflamed and he needed anti inflammatory meds for 5 days and it took 2 days for Bruno to have relief. The vet called to ask about his progress and I explained that I noticed he was breathing heavily. They told me he needed to be seen that day and they would do an X-ray to make sure there wasn't a break in his foot or pelvis and to check his lungs. They concluded with X-ray that he had pneumonia. I was told by the doctor that I now need to keep an eye on my other birds as well. The next day I noticed my other bird (Kevin) was also breathing heavy so I brought him in and they concluded with X-ray that he also had pneumonia but not nearly as bad as Bruno. From the day we brought him home he has been in a separate cage away from my other bird. I contacted the Poughkeepsie store and explained everything in tears to them because I was scared I was going to lose both birds because respiratory illness in birds is extremely dangerous and can kill them very fast. They told me they could not help me on store level because per the contract my husband signed it states I needed to bring the bird back to Petco in Poughkeepsie so that they can send him for treatment and they (the employees) would have given him the treatments. Let's be honest here... they couldn't answer most questions I asked when there so I doubt they would have noticed that Bruno was breathing heavily and he could have died so I felt I made the correct choice because his illness was so grave. Both birds had a follow up visit and were still sick. Bruno continued meds for another two weeks and Kevin one week. Petco in Poughkeepsie said they would collect all vet bills and info and they would give them to corporate to handle. I was in contact with them several times. I dropped off all bills and even provided a letter from the avian doctor stating in detail that Bruno had an INFECTIOUS Pneumonia. Meaning it could have and did spread to another bird. I had a manager speak to me over phone and told me he truly thinks they would cover Bruno's vet bills but probably not Kevins but to try anyway. I provided them with the rest of the vet bills yesterday. I received a phone call today to tell me corporate refused to reimburse me for the vet bills because again I didn't bring Bruno back in the first place to be treated by the vet they (Petco) uses. (I suspect that they would just replace him with a bird that was not ill.) Not even a small offer to cover any of Bruno's expenses. It was just a flat out no from them. I spent weeks stressing about these poor babies. Not to mention Bruno was a gift for my daughter so she was heartbroken. I spend a lot of money with you guys. Last night after dropping off the paperwork to them personally I spent around $80 on supplies for the birds. Perches etc... this truly deserves something in return. It's just disappointing. Please rectify this. It would be greatly appreciated. I firmly believe Petco treats the live pets like inventory. It's extremely sad and disappointing. read more

Went today to this Petco to try their Vetco shot clinic. After the vet arrived late, I was tempted to leave but I had already waited 45 minutes. Standing for an hour and a half for shots is not worth the price. I would rather drive to long island to north shore and have an appointment and have my dog given a wellness visit for the same price then come back here. Some of the vet techs were knowledgeable others not so much as I witnessed one having a hard time explaining what a heartworn antigen test is and why it is important to another customer. The store itself was dirty by the vet clinic as wet wipes and napkins were not provided for pet accidents during the long wait. The adoption center they have come in on the weekends is why they get the 3 stars as they seem to care about the animals. read more
