Went in to see if they can do a nail trim for my dog as I have walked in to the Salinas location many times. They only had one dog and did not look busy whatsoever. My dogs nail has split and has been hurting her and even asked if they could just trim the one nail. She said no it would take too long because they would have to fill out paper work ?? Jennelle's outstanding customer service should be recognize for the "Best in the West" customer service. This was my first time to experience extremely thoughtful and passionate customer service. Jennelle took her time to explain each product to us. I didn't feel rushed and I wasn't just another customer. She truly wanted us to make an inform decision before we bought the product. She reassured us if it doesn't work out, we would be able to exchange or return the item within a certain amount of time. She even offered and brought my two Pom poms water because they were panting so much. She helped us regarding price matching. I went to go buy fish and what I saw was horrendous. I expect to see a dead fish or two, but not so many! There was three dead fish in one tank that had been there so long they had started to rot and where covered in a white sphere of bacteria. Disgusting. Even the snails where dead and there flesh was rotting in strands. To top it all off the Freshwater tanks had the bottom cover in this red algae. Red algae does not exist in the scarlet color in fresh water, meaning something is Very wrong with the water quality. If your going for fish, don't buy. It's not worth bringing home whatever disease or algae issue petco has. read more

I just picked up my dogs from the grooming at Petco next to Whole Foods in Monterey Ca. My Havanase looks like a terrier mix... I had two dogs groomed there, the other one is fine he is a poodle/king charles mix and his cut is ok...but I'm really upset over my Havanese I spent a long time describing her cut.,as it was typed into the computer what went wrong? ..the ears were long silky and beautiful now they are stumped, they shaved her legs and coat. I was charged over $160. I pay under $100 in Newport Beach for both of my dogs, and I have a professional groomer. I've been here before with good results and I'm sure it was less money. I got my dog groomed by Gigi and all I can say is wow. She did an amazing job, was friendly and I could tell she actually cared about my wiener dog Bruno. I briefly spoke with the store manager Ashly and she was helpful, knowledgeable and ran a tight ship. The store was clean and organized. One of the few Petcos that didn't smell like dog poop. It's hard to rate this petco anything more than three stars due to the quality of some enclosures. My biggest concern is with the fish tanks, particularly the freshwater fish. Each time I visit, there's at least three dead fish in the filters or just hanging around in at least a quarter of the tanks, usually with the mollies, neon tetras, and dwarf gouramis. The feeder fish tanks are, point blank disgusting. While feeder fish are meant to be eaten by other fish, they're cramped together with at minimum ten to twenty dead ones floating around. While my fiance and I were buying fish food and some more substrate, we listened to a staff member laugh about how a dead fish was "literally falling apart" to what I assume was a trainee. Aside from that, the staff members for the most part are very helpful when it comes to finding certain products or recommending things, and for the most part treat their animals (aside from the fish) kindly. read more

The reason for the low rating is mainly because of the awful service i received from the store manager. Approximately two weeks ago i purchased a new harness for my puppy and was told by the cashier that if it did not fit i could return it. He specifically stated "we will just look it up in the system with your membership information". I took that as they could find my recent purchase information by entering my email address and/or telephone number. On 12/24/16, I tried to exchange the harness for a different style as my puppy did not like the one I purchased and it did not fit him properly. The cashier was Amanda and she was friendly as always but informed me that she was not sure she could process the return/exchange without a receipt. The manger, Ashley, approached the register and immediately started to give me a lesson on return policies and "normal life"... she said repeatedly "I can't do a return or exchange without a receipt. In 'normal life' you need to provide a receipt at any store. That is how 'normal life' works"... i told her that I understand how "normal life" works and I don't need a life lesson from her but that her employee told me all they needed was my information to "look me up in the system". She continued to go on about how she could not process without a receipt and "normally when you want to return something at any store you need your receipt"... well, that is not the case because there are many stores that do not need a receipt because they can scan the item and pull it up (Macy's Nordstrom, Target, etc. etc. etc.) I finally got tired of hearing her condescending attitude and tone that I told her I would just purchase the new harness and not worry about the exchange. At that moment, she said "well if you purchased it within the last 30 days i can look it up with your email but i can only look up 7 days at a time so it might take me a few minutes" Well, it looks like she could process without a receipt and she did in fact find the purchase. When she returned from looking up the transaction in her office, she had a form for me to fill out my name, address, and she asked for my drivers license. She wrote the address on my license down on the form and I informed her that my current address is not what is on my DL just in case something comes up and they need to know my current address. She then proceeded to tell me about their policy for drivers licenses... Again, i did not need another long drawn out, condescending explanation.. i just was letting her know my current address is not on my DL. The staff at this store are always very friendly and helpful but this manager was beyond rude. She had a very stuck up attitude and did not seem eager to please or assist me, the paying customer. All she needed to say was "we usually do need a receipt but let me see what i can do for you".. Had she approached with that type of helpful and thoughtful attitude, i would have understood if she could not process the exchange but instead she wanted to talk to me about "normal life" and "normal return policies anywhere you shop" as if i am not living in "reality".. other customers around me noticed her tone and comments, you could tell by the looks on their faces. I was irritated with her and she probably noticed but that is only because from her initial approach she was not friendly or willing to help. I want to continue to shop at this store but honestly, this encounter makes me not want to return. Poor customer service will quickly drive away customers and Ashley is providing exactly that.. Clearly, there have been others that have experienced her attitude.. glad to know i am not the only one. read more

I've just become a new dog owner, so I'm checking out all the pet stores in my area. My experience was very positive. I was pleasantly greeted and the young man assisted me in finding the things that I need. I asked for the "New Dog Owner" booklet which saved me 20% I've read a lot of complaints about the groomer on Yelp, but fortunately my dog is short-haired and really doesn't need those services. I have been A long time customer of Petco, and have had great experiences with all of the staff members, aside from the manager, Cynthia, I am now a year into my own dog training business, and I was having a nice, normal, conversation with a lady and her two dogs, Cynthia was very rude in pulling me aside, to tell me to stop marketing/ showing myself off at Petco, I came in to buy training treats and toys. In her reference to me "showing myself off" in no such way was I doing so, and it was extremely rude of her to do it how she did it, in front of my coworker and her customers, who were all appalled to hear what she said and how she said it! I hate to say, but I will no longer be going to this Petco, and will be referring all of my clients away from them all because of Cynthia, I have never felt so offended, and upset about something like this in my life, it was very unprofessional, I hope something is done about it. I have been a loyal Petco customer for years. I took my senior black lab dog to the groomers for a bath. I got my dog back all groomed and looking good. But surprisingly was told by the female groomer that my dog layed down the whole time and she needed a second groomer to hold up my dog, thereby charging an extra $6 for handling. This groomer told me to not bring my dog back to Petco anymore. I was in shock. $79 later and my senior pet and I get this kind of attitude? She was well-behaved, not biting or any of that kind of behavior. I told them at the beginning of the appointment that her legs are sensitive. I will definitely not be taking my dog there anymore. I would give negatives stars if it weren't for the EXCELLENT service I got from Gigi. She is worth 5 stars alone but her manager (probably the same one who received bad reviews further down) ruined my experience. I popped into the store because I've been considering another pet. Before I knew it, Gigi offered her assistance and, when I told her my dilemma about large vs small animals, she chatted with me about what I was looking for and offered to let me hold a guinea pig to help me decide. Cuddling with that cutie made my day and almost led to an impulse buy! But Gigi and I discussed what kind of pet would fit my needs. While she was giving me great info on the chinchilla, a manager (I assume she's a manager as bossy as she was), stomped over and yelled at Gigi, "We have a lot more to do than sit around holding animals!" Raising your voice to people is rude to begin with but who yells at employees IN FRONT OF A CUSTOMER? What if I'd been a secret shopper? She retreated but I saw her come out of an aisle and continue yelling when she thought I'd left. Gigi continued helping me make the best decision, which was to not purchase because my current apartment does not have A/C (and chinchillas easily overheat) but she completely sold me on getting one when I move to a new place in August! She was fantastic in helping me consider the best options for my needs and the health of the animal. As for her manager, her poor customer service makes me wonder how she treats the animals when she's that awful to people! Total thumbs down--I'll be getting my new pet elsewhere. read more

I have been using the Petco Grooming Salon in Monterey's Del Monte Center now for several years, primarily because of its convenience. After my dog Diva and I had spent a few early morning hours romping and playing on Carmel beach, I would drop her there for a quick bath. Being an energetic dog (she has border collie in her), she can't get enough of the beach, so I would drop her off at the Del Monte Petco Grooming Salon before taking her home. She never really needed much in the way of "grooming", so I asked that they just give her a bath and a brush-out (boy, can she shed...). Over the years, most of the groomers were young and nice, but came and went. As such, the level of quality and customer service was often unpredictable. Let me be crystal clear...I NEVER saw them mistreat an animal. I just noticed that the quality control and customer service was not where it should be. So, l if I would have written this review a year or 2 ago, it would have been 3 out of 5 stars. The reason it is 5 out of 5 stars today has everything to do with Gigi, one of the salon's groomers. A while back, after one of our morning beach outings, I dropped Diva off at Petco and met Gigi for the first time. As soon as I met her I new she was different. And to this day, I can't say enough good things about her. Gigi treats Diva like she was her own. Diva is getting up there in years (she is close to eleven years old) and she does not like to be separated from me. Gigi knows this and does her best to handle Diva gently and with compassion. When I come back to pick her up, I am always pleasantly surprised by a little thing here or there that Gigi has done to make Diva more comfortable as well as more beautiful. I did not ask for it, but Gigi saw it needed to be done, it didn't take much time, so she did it. To be clear, she never did anything extraordinary with out contacting me first. I am talking about little touches that might not take much time, but go a long way from a customer service perspective. Finally, since Gigi began working at the salon, I have noticed the salon's level of customer service go up a notch or two. I could be wrong about that, but I am willing to bet I know who is responsible. Gigi, if you ever read this, thank you for taking such good care of Diva. She deserves nothing less. And, if you are reading this and you are one of Gigi's managers, thank you, also. Gigi is an exceptional employee, and I have no doubt her bright smile and cheerful manner has improved the overall atmosphere and service at your grooming salon. That said, now that I think about it, I can't remember the last time I wrote something like this praising the level of someone's service. Excellent customer service is hard to come by these days, so when I do see it, I want to do anything I can to let those responsible for such excellent service know that their efforts did not go unnoticed and that I appreciated it. After one of our visits, an associate from the grooming department, a young girl (early 20's), was walking around checking on customers. She was not only friendly and kind toward our pup but knowledgable of proper grooming practices. Believe it or not, she actually made us change our mind about getting our pups nails trimed at Petco. She does good quality work and is also gentle with our pup, making sure not to cut into the quick or harm animals in any way. She is now the only person that cuts our pup's nails. read more

Gigi was extremely positive and friendly when meeting him. it made me feel comfortable and most importantly made my dog extremely comfortable and made it real easy leaving my baby there with her. I know this is a "corporate" store, but their employees really came through in the clutch for me when I brought in my dog who had a tick. They found me a $3 tick remover, then personally removed the critter and then found another one and removed that one too - like seasoned vets (but cheaper). Good vibes! read more

The store employee mumbled to me to go to the fish department and someone would meet me there to get the fish. I waited around for 15 minutes and no store employee ever came. I was apprehensive about buying saltwater fish from a chain pet store but I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had a great selection. Tony was very knowledgeable about every fish there and was really engaged in what my tank was like. Great varieties from snowflake clownfish to Niger triggerfish and even a healthy-looking wrasse (Lyretail?) Also, they have really good dog food (gluten-free,all-natural). Wow! We went on a hike and little Lola had so many thorns,seed grass,and foxtails in her hair,her hair was tangly and she was so due for a wash n brush! From the moment we walked in the door Gigi,one of the groomers, was so kind,caring and Lola came out looking so fresh clean and beautiful! Gigi really took her time with Lola and put her all into taking care of all these pets I can tell she really loves animals and loves what she does. I have just gotten a puppy and she was in a really bad condition. My puppy had fleas, i washed her with borax and then shampooed her. It got rid of a lot of fleas but i didnt feel like she was comfortable still. I called the next day and asked if they would groom her for me, they got me in that same day at 12:30. And my dog was taken care of for an hour, while i walked around and bought some supplies for the store. They started me up with a membership and a welcome to the family bag, everybody was really nice they gave me so many specials for bringing my puppy in. And i signed my puppy up for some classes, once i get her shots i will be able to schedule that. Once i got my puppy back she was so clean and smelled so fruity, and her fleas have been gone since. Deplorable customer service. I attempted to return a gift card with a receipt. The receipt clearly states that returns must be accompanied by a receipt. The store manager called headquarters which is located in INDIA and was told the return policy does not apply to gift cards even though the receipt does not exclude gift cards from the return policy. The store also did not want to refund the change of less than $10.00 which is required under CA law. Try shopping at Stone's Pet Shop in Pacific Grove or Petsmart in Sand City, the customer service is much better. I will never again shop at Petco. read more

I have been a loyal customer there since they opened. Today I returned some training pads from Petco and for some strange reason the cashier said "we dont sell this product". I have ONLY purchased my products from Petco. Then the assistant manager who should not be in a managerial position in a pet shop said "we dont even sell this brand" I guided him to the shelf where they do sell Simple solutiion and he didnt have much to say. He could have done a Miscallanous credit. Petsmart offered to return them for credit. But I had left the product at the Petco in hope that they shove it where the sun doesnt shine I was treated very rudely. The staff is terrible. GO TO PETSMART. The store is located at the Del Monte shopping center which is really convenient as you can get all your shopping done in one swoop. The parking lot spaces are pretty tight and it's always busy, but if you have a compact this won't be a problem. The store is medium sized and it has grooming and training services which seem standard, can't really speak to their quality. They had a few cats in the front that were up for adoption that all looked big and healthy. Their assortment of small mammals, reptiles, and fish was small - but, they did have some cool looking neon blacklight fish. The store is clean and well kept and I would say that if you were a pet owner you could find what you needed at retail price. read more

I've taken my Maltese here multiple times and they have their good times and bad. Last time I came they mentioned that my dog was on thin ice because apparently he had been biting. This DOES NOT sound like my dog and the only reason he would ever bite is if they were severely mistreating him. Since I heard that I decided that I shouldn't take him there any more. There are not a lot of great options in monterey, but I would rather pay more at a different salon so that I know my pup is getting treated right. Plus they charged me $70 dollars here which isn't much cheaper than the places in Carmel. BE CAREFUL and if you have to, ask for a zoom groom so you can stay and watch the whole time. read more

I used to take my two dogs to petco in 29 palms to get groomed regularly and always felt that the $70 was well spent.... however I am sad I will no longer be taking my dogs to get groomed at petco. Both dogs were semi wet when I received them, which one I slightly expected because he's not a fan of the dryer. However when they dried not only did they still smell bad but I realized their ears were still extremely dirty, and both were scratching non stop! They did not stop scratching for two days, at that point I gave them another bath thoroughly and the scratching stopped.... although the groomers were nice and conversational they truly failed to what they were paid $70 to do. read more
