We usually take our dogs to the Petco in Eden Prairie for grooming but they were booked out for over a month so we looked at the Petco in Hopkin/Minnetonka and they had lots of openings which honestly gave us pause. We booked anyway. The staff/groomers didn't even seem to like dogs. They started by dragging our dogs away by their leashes...not even talking to them or acknowledging them. Pickup was chaotic. Four dogs being groomed at the same time. Dogs, including ours, barking like crazy in the back room where they're kenneled. I waited 10 minutes - listening to my dogs the whole time. The staff who rang up the transaction did not make eye contact or even speak to me other than when I asked a question and then they still didn't make eye contact and gave the shortest answer possible. There are also a bunch of spots of hair they missed when they did the cut portion of the groom and both dogs had dirt/wax inside their ears after the clean/groom. One of the dogs had two cuts on her chest from the groomer and nobody even mentioned it to me when I picked them up. We will never go back and now I understand why they had so many openings. I share this in case you have nervous dogs and/or would prefer to avoid this type of experience. Edited to add: Petco Minnetonka/Hopkins offered a refund which is the best they can do at this point and I appreciate it. I had some time to kill before I hit Minnetonka and I have some kind of membership here. Zoony needed cat litter and I get the crystal for the self raking box. totally worth it. The litter isn't too far to get to. I met a friendly Finnish cashier. I told her I happen to be watching a Finnish mystery series. The best thing about this place is they have a cart corral. I think it's the only one that exists. Glad someone was thinking. read more

Wow...what's up with all the negative reviews here? I've only had good experiences here, including finding all kinds of cat food that my cat enjoys. My cat is 18 and elderly, and have trouble getting her to eat, and this store has alot of "soupy" kitty food that's nutritious and that my cat is able to lick up and eat. And I thought I found a good petco to source animals from. Employees does not care to handle animals properly. Maybe varies from employee to employee, the person who helps was somewhat nice and had knowledge in saltwater aquatics but I'm not sure how he handled and bagged the ritteri I purchased because I wasn't watching while he ripped it off the glass. After acclimating for 3-4 hours the ritteri anemone never inflated and was tore on the pedal disk at the bottom. lost $100 for nothing. It's not my first either and I'm not a newbie, I just wanted to add another ritteri to my existing ritteri tank only. But I guess some people are shady in the hobby and will do whatever they can to not let others keep what they want. It's just sad for petco to also own LiveAquaria now. I hope people like this does not also work at LiveAquaria because that's where I purchased all my duetted anemone from that are still alive a year later today from careful acclimating to my tank. Btw a couple days later I went back to purchase some more stuff. Not saying a word or even telling that same employee about anything. I purchase two corals. He had them in separate bags and decides to bag them in the same bag after looking at them for a few seconds. I didn't say anything but just watched because it's better to save it for a review how people at this petco can be to customers they feel like being an a-hole to. I used to take both of my Shih Tzus there for several years. Then they told me they wouldn't groom my senior dog anymore. He was old, and grouchy. The girl who could handle him and left to go work elsewhere. So I found another groomer. That groomer has since closed. Today, I had an appointment at Petco, which they had set for 6pm. I get there and this one girl (alone) told me they had called to reschedule my appointment, as the 6pm girl couldn't get my dog done in two hours, but needed 4. So didn't they know that when they gave me the 6pm time slot? I was working at the time they had called and left the message ( which I didn't catch). So I made the drive for nothing. I went to the Petco in Minnetonka today to purchase some Frontline for my dog. A six dose box for a small dog was $109.00. The clerk had to get the box from the locked display case. When he rang it up and told me the total I asked him to check the price again. Since I wasn't inclined to pay that amount for the Frontline I went out to my car and checked online to see what it should be selling for. Amazon had the exact item for $57.00. When I went back into the store to show them that Amazon had the same product for half the price the clerk told me they don't price match Amazon. So I ordered from Amazon. My 3 stars are based on one visit and it stands for the fact that I got what I was looking for. On a slightly different note, I can add to the 'who will bell the cat?' impossible task. Such as, 'Who will bathe the cat?' OR 'Who will deal with the dead mouse the cat brings home?' OR 'Who will put a coat on the cat?' So, it was a coat I needed to buy for my soon-to-be-20 cat. She was seeking to become one with the radiators. Chuck and Don's told me that coat-makers don't make any for cats. Dogs are into the 'please my master' thing. Cats on the other hand are into the 'i'll keep you guessing' thing.. After searching through endless kinds of coats at the Petco store I settled on one that looked the least offensive. I made sure to ask if I could return it if it did not work. The coat I brought home did not fit and the cat was so dumbfounded that she did not even care to hiss at me. The next step was to measure her. Easier said than done. My husband and I managed to do it with our limbs intact. Went back to the store and by then the old stock had been replaced by new arrivals. I was relieved to not have to keep up with trends in dog coats ... The measurements narrowed down the choice to one coat that was fake gray suede outside and fake white fur inside. It had two smart looking tabs around the waist in case the dog/cat decided to trot on two legs and look like a human. Exchanging the old for the new was no problem. The coat has been used no more than 6 times. The cat becomes a statue whenever I put it on her and looks so wretched that the only compassionate thing to do is to take it off. We came to this location specifically for the shrimp/snail tank they have. We were blown away by this store compared to similar stores in our area. We however were NOT blown away by the quality of the shrimp/snails. We ended up purchasing about 8 shrimp, in a variety of colors to add to our existing shrimp tank. This racked up about $50+ total in shrimp, which we were fine paying because they were so cool! The very next day, one was already dead and I figured "oh okay, that's bound to happen probably had a weak/sick one". No big deal, the store happily exchanged it for me. It has been not even a week total since I've purchased the 8 shrimp, and I have 2 remaining and I'm out probably $40 worth of shrimp. Of all the shrimp in that tank, only the ones from this Petco are dying. All the others from local breeders or other stores are thriving. If I were you, I would start to/continue to buy from local fish stores, not huge chains as it appears the quality in chains is far from good. Now onto the positive part of this review. Ryan was the employee who helped us out when we stopped in. He was incredibly helpful and was very knowledgeable on aquatics and shrimp in specific! He gave us tips and recommendations to help us achieve the best for our shrimp. He answered all our questions and helped us for an absurdly long time, we were very distracted by the shrimp! I'm not sure if this is normal for this store or if I just purchased out of a bad shipment. I personally will most likely not return, but the intent of this review is to make others aware of my situation and use it as they feel necessary. Normally I get decent service from this location. Granted, I've been going to Target more and more for all my needs. I'm not sure when their service changed, or if I just came here on an off day. It didn't seem as good, so I'll go with three stars. My cat gets violently carsick, so I sent an email off to the headquarters of my vet. They suggested that I bring the cat in to get something prescribed. Dropping in costs $30 and my friend told me that his parents gave their cat an over the counter drug to calm it down. I decided to shop around and see if any pet stores had anything for this problem. Like I said, I've been going to other stores, but I remembered there was the PetCo, so I came here. It was OK. The cashier noticed that I looked confused and asked me what I needed. He suggested a few items that sounded absurd. Instead of just pointing me to the cat aisle, he called up a floor worker. It was a blessing and a curse. It was sweet, but the floor guy was slow. He took forever to come to me and looked at the label of every cat bottle. I think I could have handled it. They had nothing. Absolutely nothing for my problem. I don't completely blame them. It's not their fault my cat has explosive puke/crap episodes in the car. I just wish they would have been able to tell me "no" instead of making me waste 20 minutes to find out they have crappy spritzer bottles with supposedly miracle stress relievers. Yesterday I brought my 9 month old Biewer Terrier puppy into get groomed. I showed two staff members a picture of what I wanted. I explained to the groomer that she fidgets and doesn't like her face touched or handled. I told them to give her time and she will calm down. I also stated to get it as close to the picture as possible. Upon pick up I heard a staff member inquire to another staff member about my dog, by using snarky "insider" comments.  One of the cashiers approached me and stated "we were not aggressive but was firm with her."  This immediately made me concerned and my instincts were that they hit her. I was "early" (arrived at 5:30) so I waited for her and watched how she was handled. I could see the groomer become visually upset with her but he did the right thing and took a step back as I watched. At one point they had 3 people working on her.  My appointment was from 3:15 to 5:00 according to the app when I scheduled her. When I first checked in he said of I dont call you by 5:30 plan to be here by 6. She is a 7 pounds 9 month old puppy.  It was 5:30 and she still wasn't completed. She was done just before 6 pm. Upon speaking with the staff one of them stated "we hate it when owners come in with a dog that is one years old and demand a perfect cut. We appreciate you understanding that your puppy will not have perfect haircut."  What I requested and what I recieved is similar but nowhere close. Her legs that the groomer admitted "she didnt like them touched"were trimmed and they should have been long.The cut I can live with. It is hair and will grow out. My main concern is the treatment of my puppy.  My question and request is if there is video surveillance in Petcos' grooming area for 13691 Ridgedale Dr, Hopkins MN 55305 store?  I asked this to the corporate office. I received a cancelation for my next hair appointment today. Ah, yes, I will not be taking her back. I asked are you able to review the video and proof to me there was no aggressive (hitting) my puppy during her first haircut with a professional groomer? Still no answer to this question as well. I'm concerned because of the statements and behavior the staff made. At the bare minimum they need better training. Do not bring your dog here for grooming. Nope, I'm not a fan of this location specifically. I have been to many pet stores, as well as many different Petco locations (Petco consistently has higher prices on e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g). This one just has an "off" vibe to it. I chalk it up to bad management. None of the employee's seem like they even remotely enjoy their jobs. There are a few good things about Petco, in general. Good aquatic department, decent amount of ferret supplies (which, they should, as they sell them in their store), they do have some pets up for adoption (and do encourage people to adopt them vs buying a "new" hamster/guinea pig/etc from them), they have a bulk dog cookie bar, and so on... But, as far as the Minnetonka location is concerned... Unfriendly atmosphere + higher priced items = me, shopping elsewhere. read more

Avoid avoid avoid. I mean first petco treats there incoming animals like crap. But if you love truly love your family member (pet) don't make them suffer. The groomers are the worst! I've been bringing my chihuahua her for years for her nail trims. She hates it and I've always told them watch out. So they would never have issues with my dog. when they had there old employees maybe 2 years ago. My chihuahua has had her own groomer this sweet young girl knew how to keep my dog calm she was always excited to see my dog she would hug her and kiss her to make her feel less nervous which worked. I'm not sure where she went maybe quit I wouldn't blame her They have new groomers they are senior women. I have no issues with our seniors but there delicate with paper thin skin. This women I didn't know she looked 60s which again I didn't care .I told her 2 times my dog is horrible with nails she can get very nervous which makes her bite. Back then the lovely girls would put on this blue glove to protect from a bite . My dog doesn't bite it's more like a hard nibble but never draws blood it's just a nervous reaction. I advised this lady what to do. I handed her my dog and she said she doesn't seem violent and I said well she's not it's her nails that get her. I told her again maybe wear that blue thing. So I left to shop for food I came back because they said my dog was ready over the speaker. The old hag was like ya she bit me look . She showed me her hand and I'm like I don't see it l. She pointed at it and I said I don't see blood and no dent nothing!! But because it hurt her she forbid my chihuahua to go to any petco to get her nails done!! I was so upset I told her over and over just because she's sweet when you hold her she's scared when her nails get done and told her to wear that protection glove just in case and she didn't . It hurt her because she had that old skin paper thin skin you can see right threw it ! She didn't even finish my dogs nails and I still had to pay full price. That's grooming experience but The store overall the employees just seem like they don't want to be there. I have never had a good experience with there cashiers. Theres this big girl that works there and she always throws my cash at me instead of handing it to me. This Petco could definitely use a few updates however they have the best self-service dog wash. For $10 you get a big basin to wash and dry your dog. They provide you a basket with towels, shampoo, and conditioner. Their shampoo and conditioner is really terrible (very hard to rinse out of your dog's coat) but since I take my own I don't really care. They have a fantastic dog dryer to blast the water out of the cost after the bath. I definitely keep going back for the self service wash. The dog food prices are getting quite high so I've started looking around for better deals. They also quit doing price matching. read more

I arrived to Petco Hopkins to check into the grooming prices and schedule and I was pleasantly surprised to find they took walk ins for nail trims. We have only had our dog Cooper for a couple months and there are many aspects of his care that are still new to us and nails are one of them. It has been hard to find places that I could get in without a week or more notice. They were so sweet and very professional in the grooming area they will be the only place I go from now on. Cooper is a bit of a freak getting his nails trimmed and the darling woman was very confident they could handle him, he's about 25 lbs but all muscle! I could hear him screaming dramatically but I could see through the window she was gentle and kind with him. They had to ask another groomer to help hold his head because he got mouthy but they were so calm and gave him belly rubs and finished the service very quickly. These ladies seemed like they actually like animals and it's not just a paycheck. It's a hard and dirty job! I really appreciate there kindness and professionalism with my new family member. read more

I think that this is the best Petco location around without a doubt. My main experience is with their saltwater fish. I see the four posters above feel differently but hey obviously do not own saltwater tanks. They have one of the better selections at some of the best prices. Jason is a good resource in a hobby than can be expensive if you fail at it. This is not sayign that all Petco fish departments are this way. This is a magnet store for Petco and the saltwater section is a focus for them. read more

One month ago I was inclined to give a 5 star review after one of the groomers did amazing with our newly adopted rescue dog's nail trim. She was kind, patient, and soothing for our nervous dog. I think her name was Mollie or something close... blonde hair and said she handles the big dogs. She had me leaving there feeling so relieved it went so well! Today was a much different story. The girl we had last time wasn't there, so I repeatedly detailed that our dog is a rescue who gets very nervous when he's here, that he is unsure of his situatuins, but that he's a good dog. The girl (whose name I didn't catch, but she had a purple streak in her black hair with gauged ears) seemed to understand that until she came out from behind the gate and walked toward him with her hand straight out, palm down (as if coming at the dog with a grabbing motion) and he felt threatened and terrified and he snapped at her. He did so while cowering away moving backwards torward the door. He didn't lunge, he didn't attack, he was just showing that he felt threatened by the way she came at him. He's NEVER done this before. The way she approached him, after fully detailing her about him, had me in disbelief and wondering if she had ever even worked with dogs before! She handed me his leash, suggested going to a vet, then advised training. Lady, I advise you to go through training yourself. You proved today that you did not know how to responsibly approach nervous dogs. I did my part as a responsible dog owner, and what happened today was not my dog's fault. He did great last time with the woman who did his nails. If there was a manager available I'd have talked to them, but instead, the public should know that if you have a nervous dog, make sure the girl I described does not handle your sweet pooch. read more

We walked into the store today, to the right of us were three small cages ontop of one another. We looked closer only to see a cat in each of the cages! They we sooo adorable!!! They were up for adoption! As we went up to them they rubbed against the plastic but we could not pet them without someone unlocking the box! We asked someone if they could open the cages,(for us to pet and hold, maybe considering adoption) they sent a young lady over(didnt even the slightest smile on). I asked about opening a cage one at a time, she said, "well are you even thinking about adopting because im not just going to open them so you can play with the cats." Point is, even if someone isnt thinking about adopting the animals a huge part of helping get them adopted is word of mouth! Also, you should be polite always try to PLEASE your customers! Ok here goes do not ever go to the groomers here! The only good groomer is Jody!!! Highly recommended!!!!! I too her here to get a groom and nail grinding they took from 2:00 -6:30 to groom a 5 pond dog. No apologies whatsoever when I picked her up... And the gal did not even thank me for the tip I left her, So I called the grooming manager and she said I could come back and she would re do her awful cut the previous groomer gave her I just asked to even it up and guess what..... She cut off all her hair on her legs ! Which I had wanted long hair, this is morkie' she looks terribly !!!!I was so dumbfounded I could not speak! I was in shock!!!!!! I did not want to make another scene so I left. The manager should not be grooming if all she knows is simple razor cuts! She looks silly too short for winter and I have been trying to grow her hair long For 8 months! Bottom line get, they do not know how to groom dogs at this location!!!! Steer clear!!!!!!! Called and asked how much it would be to bring my dog in (a small Pomeranian) and they told me about $45. When I finally got to pick him up, his mane was still longer than I would like and when it came time to pay she said for swipe my card without even informing me of the price. So I asked it was $45 right? And she said no it was $59! They should really do a better job letting you know the price, not just saying the lowest. Plus he was still choppy and not what I would expect after paying $59 for it. But they did a good job on his feet! Just some parts need some work done to them. My cocker spaniel was missing for 4 days, then came home with burrs all over, so I began calling around for a full service grooming appointment and got one on Saturday, a week after she returned home. We normally get her groomed at the Maple Grove location, but they didn't have an available appointment. On Saturday Petco Minnetonka called and asked if I could come earlier, and I left immediately and was there an hour before the originally scheduled appointment. When the groomer and I talked, she said she only had time for a bath. That was not the appointment I asked for! Now I have waited almost an entire week for this appointment, and have obliged them by coming an hour early, only to find that we can't have the dog groomed there today. Very disgusted with this service. An "I'm sorry this happened" would have been appreciated, but I heard nothing. read more
