We are new in town and booked a grooming appointment for our dog at Petco at 12pm. It became evident on the day of his appointment that these guys book as many dogs as possible in one day, which they don't tell you beforehand and which means a 4-hour wait for your dog to be taken care of (for the record, our dog is a 16-pound terrier with hair - not fur - who does not require high-maintenance grooming). They upcharge customers for a quicker grooming experience but again, said nothing about this option when we booked over the phone. To top it off, we showed up after this ridiculous wait and the groomer brought out someone else's dog to us. Our dog walked out of the "salon" dehydrated (it seems he was given no water the entire afternoon) and in desperate need of a bathroom break because he was likely caged up for the better part of those 4 hours. We've paid far less at small businesses for the same number (if not more) and higher quality of services. Those places also took less than half the amount of time that Petco does. We will never be bringing our dog here for grooming again. read more

Stopped in here yesterday while in Fort Collins. First time in this store and not impressed. I walked all over the place and could not find anyone to help me out. There was a girl helping someone by the dog food area and then she went to the front and started working a cash register. Seemed like this place was way understaffed and I ended up walking out and going elsewhere. Pretty sad people are not adequately staffed in sections of the store to help out the public. Don't think I will be back as a result. read more

I have to give credit where credit is due. Somehow my puppy and I are always lucky to encounter Kai when we shop. They are always so incredibly kind and friendly. Kai always remembers who we are, and treats us with the absolute best service and attitude. Offers a treat to my little guy, asks how we are, and just makes the whole experience better. We truly look forward to getting our supplies at Petco. I was once there and an absolutely horrid customer was causing an outrageous scene, and Kai went about it with such impressive grace and kindnesses. Petco is lucky to have such a wonderful employee. We recently had puppy's nails trimmed and the ladies at grooming were outstanding. We also always get to see another wonderful employee in the food section that remembers us, and goes out of her way to greet us. I seriously find any excuse to go to Petco. We've also encountered employees that seem so joyful to help fit my little guy with harnesses, recommend grooming supplies etc. Don't know your hiring process Petco, but great job. read more

I've been shopping at PetCo at this location for 10 years. Prices are competitive. Staff is generally unavailable for help. Check out lines are slowwwwww - mostly due to only one cashier and an archaic credit card authorization machine. Note: Both of these things have improved in recent visits - they open up another register and replaced the card authorization machines ;-) Do-it-yourself dog wash is filthy. Tried this many times, finally afraid it was just too darn gross and dirty. Often see dead fish in aquariums. Aisles are clean, bright and well organized. PetCo card offers pretty good discounts. read more

Stephanie in aquatics went above and beyond to help me today. It was busy this afternoon when I came in for a couple of female bettas. Stephanie helped me even though it was towards the end of her shift and it was quite busy in the store. I found my female bettas and even ended up getting a vanilla lobster. The whole fish department was knowledgeable and helpful. Asking my tank size to make sure it was adequate for all my purchases. I really appreciated that they cared enough about the animals to ask. Great store. Will definitely be back! read more

My dog had a terrible grooming experience here. It was just a nail trim, but my dog was clearly uncomfortable to the point of trying to bite the groomers who were roughly handling her. I could tell things weren't going well, so I told the groomers to stop... and they didn't stop. They said, "it's ok, sometimes this happens." Then the groomer whacked my dog and said, "No, don't do that, that's rude!" You would think that someone who deals with animals for a living would understand that dogs show aggression out of discomfort and pain, not because they're being "rude." But more importantly, when a customer tells the groomer to discontinue service, they must stop. I don't care if I have to pay for the full thing, I'm not okay with moving forward and putting my dog through anymore of that scary experience. But they didn't stop. The worst part is, I asked them to stop not once, but twice. And they just kept going. It was unbelievable. My dog, and I, felt helpless to do anything but be a part of the rest of this horrendous grooming service. I cried when we got back in the car because I felt so bad for her. This is the reason why this store is rated as poorly as it is. read more

Very disappointed. I take my puppy in for fun. He was being ornery and a Petco "trainer " asked if I needed help. I said no, and she started rattling off a lot of jargon about her training ideas. After about five min. Of chat during which I mentioned the trainer I work with, I moved on. Next thing I know my trainer informs me that this woman went on her Facebook page and accused my trainer of all sorts of things, none of which are true. I am in the process now of making a complaint to Petco, but I want people to know that there are many very good trainers in our area. This person went way over the line here and I would say you would be better off going elsewhere for training. read more

*THIS IS ABOUT THE PUPPY PLAYTIME CLASS ON SATURDAYS* If you don't want to read details, just trust this statement: It is chaotic, unwelcoming for small pups, uncontrolled, and not safe. Do not attend. I was excited to find a free chance to socialize my dog with other puppies, so I took her to the playtime class held at this location from 10-10:30 on Saturdays. IT WAS HORRIBLE for my small dog. Here are the reasons why: 1. THE SPACE IS TINY AND CLUTTERED. There were a lot of metal tables, chairs, and carts around the whole room which my dog was often pushed into by other puppies who were very excited. Which leads to the second problem. 2. TOO MANY DOGS. It did not appear that they enforce a cap on the number of dogs allowed in the space. The room would be comfortable for maybe about ten puppies of varying sizes to play. However, there were over 20 in this cramped little cube; most being very large breeds. That many dogs, in addition to that many owners, made the room very claustrophobic. 3. NO CHANCE FOR SMALL BREEDS TO SOCIALIZE: My dog is a dachshund/chihuahua mix, 4 months, about 10lbs. She was one of four other small dogs: A King Charles Cavalier Spaniel (5 months), Border Collie mix (8-10 weeks, 5-10lbs), and a Huskie pup (10-12lbs.). EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE DOGS WAS OVERWHELMED by the number and size of other dogs, and ended up hiding behind people and in corners, because the energy and strength of the larger puppies was too much.To give an idea of the other breeds present, there was a 5 month Mastiff (about the size of a full grown lab), several Pit Bull mixes, and various German Shepherd mixes. 4. UNSAFE FOR SMALLER PUPS: All of the smaller dogs had no chance to get out and investigate other dogs, because every time they did they were trampled, rolled on, or bitten too hard. None of them had any chance to play, and they were all anxious and desperate to hide. There were no crates to section off a place for the little ones to play, and it felt very unwelcoming to smaller breeds and younger puppies. 5. RUDE & IGNORANT TRAINER. The woman in the room was very demanding when asking owners to pick up or drop leashes. She yelled a lot, and didn't seem to have very much knowledge about dog behavior, ESPECIALLY noticing warning signs of a fight. I stood against a wall and tried to ignore my puppy when she jumped on me so as not to reinforce the anxious behavior. However when the small puppies came around I crouched to position her closer to them so she could try to interact. Anytime people did this, or when they pulled their dogs off of others for being too aggressive, she told them not to interfere; that this was how they socialize. THAT IS NOT TRUE. I've gone to a training class at South Mesa vet, and when the puppies play, the trainers are very attentive to the dogs' body language. When they recognize the energy escalating to aggression they separate the dogs, and explain to owners the signs that say it could get ugly soon. The trainer just let everything happen and gave no tips to owners for facilitating a positive play time. She also said nothing, and DID nothing about the smaller dogs. She offered no help, and didn't even seem to notice that ALL of them were overwhelmed and afraid. She even implied that it was the owners' fault, saying we were touching them too much (but we had to remove them from bad situations). 6. ALL DOGS KEPT ON LEASHES. This was helpful, but also dangerous at times. Yes, it made grabbing other dogs off the smaller ones easy, but there was also a lot of tangling around necks and limbs which just seemed like an accident waiting to happen. 7. AGGRESSIVE DOGS ALLOWED. There was one Jack Russell who snapped, lunged, and growled at every dog it encountered. It obviously needed a more structured, controlled environment, with less dogs and energy, for it to learn positive social behaviors first. But it was allowed to run rampant, terrorizing everyone. The most done was to pick him up for about 30 seconds. Dogs like that need more individual training and small group training before being released into a free atmosphere to play, but the trainer and the owner didn't seem to care. 8. INFLEXIBLE. When I asked several staff if there were a chance to give small pups a separate space or a different time to play, the answer was an unapologetic no. There was one positive out of the whole experience. At the end the small pup owners stayed behind, and we allowed our dogs to interact. Immediately, they all came out of their hiding spots, tails went up, and they began sniffing and chasing. I wanted to end it on a positive note so the experience wasn't ONLY terrifying for my puppy. We tried to hang around for a few minutes but were rushed out by the staff. If you go to this class, I hope your dog is easygoing, but most of all LARGE. If not, I don't know that they will have much of a chance to interact positively with other dogs in the class, and I would not ensure their safety. read more

Petco has a good selection and comparable prices. The one thing they don't have is enough employees. Either they don't schedule efficiently or they just don't have that many bodies, but I always have to have someone paged for small animals and it's a rarity that there isn't a line at the checkout. read more

Love the place. the sale people are very friendly and always ask if they can help. When i enter teh store they always say hello and teh people really like their job. However, the prices are higher then most stores, but the helpful slaes people make me want to spend my money their. Also like there groomers. they are very nice to my dog and do a pretty good job. they get pretty backed u, so my dg waits for a while, but their friendlyness as well as there grooming makes up for it. read more

Terrible customer service! I've been here several times because I live nearby, but will be going across town to a different pet store. There is one staff member who is always very friendly and helpful, and he is the only reason it's taken me this long to decide to go elsewhere. It is almost impossible to find someone to help. When I do find someone, they are rude, unhelpful, and judgemental. I have done extensive dog training and I asked to look at bark collars for my dog. The staff member told me that I was clearly training my dog wrong if I needed a collar. I've also tried taking my dog here for grooming. She was a foster puppy at the time, and they did not tell me about any age or vaccination requirements when I scheduled the appointment. Only found out about these requirements when I arrived for appointment and was told to leave. read more

When I first got to Petco I was shocked with the lack of employees on the floor. I had to wait in line at the only register open just to ask to look at the Robo Dwarf Hamsters. Once I finally got to look at them I picked out my female and left. I came to find out later that the "female" hamster I bought was actually a male and that was why my hamsters were fighting so much. Who knows how many pregnant females they're selling. I now have to rehome the hamster I bought. I am extremely angry that I was not sold the female hamster I was believing to purchase. I will never shop at Petco again and I do not recommend Petco to anyone. read more

I recently bought a long haired hamster from this Petco store. When we were checking out we were informed about their 30 day guarantee and warned about wet tail. So we brought the little hamster home and put it in its cage. A few days later I noticed that its eyes were crusted shut and after some research, cleaned them with a saline solution. I then noticed that she had a large amount of dry feces around her butt area. It was late at night by that point and so I put her in her cage and let her be. The next morning things had gone south. She had a massive abscess of pus over her eye and I knew she needed vet care. This was on Friday morning. So I took her back to Petco where they bought back the hamster which made me very uncomfortable. I wanted to still be the owner of the hamster, why did they need to buy it back? Why couldn't it just receive care? So reluctantly, I allowed them to refunded me my money on a card. But it didn't feel right. This hamster was no longer mine. They said they would call the vet and call me later. Before leaving I noticed that all of the other hamsters in the row of glass cases were gone. Which seemed a bit suspicious considering that there were several when I was there just days ago. After a few hours they called and said that the vet diagnosed her with wet tail and she would be on antibiotics for seven days and that they would call me on Monday. I was suspicious because she didn't seem to have wet tail and was lacking many of the symptoms plus the fact that she had severely crusty eyes which even the manager said indicated an upper respiratory issue. Since I was very nervous, I decided to call on Sunday just to check in. When I called, I explained to the woman on the phone that I had brought in my hamster under the 30 day guarantee, she asked me if I was trying to call a vet and that this was Petco. I was confused.. Petco was where she was being treated. So I once again insisted that I was calling the right place and the woman put me on hold only to have the manager come on and tell me she had died that morning and that I could come in and get a new hamster. They never even asked for my hamster's name, it was just some sick hamster that no longer had an owner. I seriously doubt that Petco even provided my hamster with ANY care at all. The events over these past few days have seemed more than suspicious and after doing some research, I can see that this has been a reoccurring issue for others as well. Think twice before shopping at Petco. Although I only had the hamster for a few days, I got attached to her and it makes you feel awful knowing that she lived such a short time and spent most of it suffering. I will never be shopping at Petco again and will only look at small animals from rescues and shelters from now on. read more
