I love comin to this petco even tho it's in the steel yard commons area. The employees are always so friendly and intellectual about what you're looking for. DO NOT TRAIN YOUR DOG HERE. The dog trainer lady with grey hair is not good at what she does and even joked about animal abuse. The group of people that were training their dogs with her didn't even make any progress as she publicly screams and shamed the dogs. I wouldn't trust my dog with someone who shames other trainers and doesn't even understand basic psychology behind the way dogs work. Examples coming soon when I find time. Are all pet shops crazy expensive like this?! I really don't remember them being this way, but it's been a long time since I've owned a dog. Please, tell me know and I'll stop complaining forever, I promise. I have to admit that I never thought I'd be spending almost $20 on a stuffed squirrel that I know my Archie dog will just love. Especially since it squeaks out in pain when you squeeze it. That's really the kicker, isn't it? If your dog is going to bite something, they want to hear some enthusiastic "hurt" noises while they're doing it! Anyways, back to the fact that I bought a state-fair-looking stuffed animal from a pet supply store for 20 bones. Rawr. As if that wasn't frustrating enough, I'm sitting there in the leash/collar/harness section wondering what the hell I should get for almost 30 minutes before someone helped me. The cherry on the sundae? It was a staff member who was literally watching me confused there for a lifetime while he put away dog food who finally helped me. Oh hey, bud! What took'ya so long? Now, I can't gripe too much because they do offer obedience classes for about $109 for 6 weeks. This pays for you to come in once a week to work with your pup. That sounds like a good deal to me, but I'm not really sure what else it out there. Is that good or bad? Who knows... My favorite part of this trip (which cost me $50 for a stuffed animal and a discounted leash/collar) was the interaction I had with the guy at the cash register. I'm under the impression this guy was not only having the worst day of his life, but also hungover and maybe experiencing a migraine at the same time. Holy-mother-of-GOD. This was the most uncomfortable moment of my life. It was like every thing I did and every move he made was this painful inconvenience for him. I wanted to give him a cookie or something to make his day better. Either that or donate a hundred dollars to his cause. I managed to help him eek out a smile before I left, but that was pretty much the most miserable checkout experience of my life. Oh, they have healthy dogs foods. So, yeah, that's cool. Just a note: I don't think all PetCo's are like this, but I do believe that Steelyard in general needs to get it's life together. read more

I arrived 5 minutes before my appointment but there wasn't anyone in the grooming area nor in the store itself. At 10:05 a cashier came to the front, questioned me and then called for the manager. When the manager arrived in front said she'd need to check if the groomer called in to be late. We both noticed that the groomer finally arrived. The manager then stated "it doesn't matter anymore, she's here", and left without saying a word to me. It was 10:07 when the groomer finally arrived. I then had to wait while the groomer got herself ready to work. I understand that I wasn't waiting that long but it seemed that they just didn't care about the comfort or stress of the customer. When I finally got my dog home I noticed that her haircut was terrible. Her ears weren't even. She had uncut hair clumps all over. I apparently paid extra to have her feet shaved but the hair between her pads weren't even trimmed. She also didn't seem to have been thoroughly bathed or perhaps it was the extraordinary amount of perfume she was doused in that made her coat feel and look greasy. This was my first time trying PETCO ... very disappointing. read more

Nice staff, possibly the nicest in the Steelyard. Store is always clean. Prices are a bit on the high side, but doggo is worth it. If you're coming in to adopt a cat, don't. They very rarely have cats there for adoption. I've never seen dogs for adoption here. read more

While I usually don't review chain stores, I felt compelled to do so today after my visit to the the Steelyard Petco. I was greeted immediately upon entering the store. A staff member walked me to the aisle and helped me locate everything I needed. Everyone there was so nice. The store had everything I was looking for. As I checked out an employee took true interest in me. They asked about the cat food I had selected and even asked to see pictures of my pets. It was a great experience. I felt like a valued customer and I will definitely return to the Steelyard Petco! read more

This Petco is really overpriced. I used to go to it a lot because it's conveniently located in Steelyard, which is close to my Ohio City residence and the APL, where I foster animals. But it is so expensive I can't justify it anymore. It's even more expensive than its online self! Today, I needed to buy some kitten food and the store price was $13.50 and online it was $10.50. Their "sale" items are always like .04 to .10 cents off - not worth the sign. I now drive to the Pet Supplies Plus in Lakewood (which has much more reasonable prices) to avoid this Petco. The workers are nice though. read more

Great for small animals, but once they get your money that's it. Paid for puppy training never received and they denied service for my large dog. (Not aggressive, just a happy guy) I spend over 200 a month in this store to get treated badly. Lost a great customer today. And I guess that is why this location never has puppy day. read more

I've been to many Petco's around the nation but this one by far is the best. Ty, the dog trainer and sales associate, is phenomenal. She greets you with $1 million smile and truly cares. If there's a long line waiting to be checked out, she'll stop what she's doing to help with the check out process. My pets all of a sudden had a flea issue when we moved to Ohio and Ty recommended what to get, the problem was solved in no time. Jennifer, another associate, is very knowledgeable and will advise you on what foods to get for your dogs. I have a picky pitbull and she told me exactly what to get. She will walk you to the cash register with a smile and make sure all your questions have been answered. I can go on and on and on. Every time I go there, I get greeted with a hug. my Petco and my Petco team. Thank you for being exceptional and thank you for being so caring. My fur babies and I truly appreciate it. read more

Bought a fish from this excuse for a shop to get my fish a buddy to swim about with. What the owners/manager did not bother telling me/care about was that the fish was diseased. Added the fish to my tank, and within a day and a half both, it and my pet that I had been taking care of for more than a year died. Never going to this place again. Ever. read more

Sometime back I booked my slightly heavy 10-year old dachshund for a grooming. When I went in with my doxie, the manager and the associate were asking how to groom. all of the sudden the manager said that she really does not look healthy - - and that she would need assurance from my vet that she was in good health. Since it was after hours for my vet, she declined to groom. Needless to say,I was furious. When I told this to my vet, he said to tell that manager to stick to cutting hair, and to leave patient's health of the real professionals - - the vets. Needless to say, I changed groomers! Today, I had my other doxie in the car with me and noticed he needed a nail trim. Since I was near this Petco I stopped to see if I could get it done. They replied yes and asked whether he had ever been there before. I replied yes but it had been a year at least. Again, they wanted to contact vet to verify rabies vaccination. Again, vet closed. I asked why he would be wearing his license and rabies tag if that tag was not verification! They replied I could be using someone else's tag! And then said they would verify Monday and could see him on Monday . . .I declined and said I would have the vet do on Monday - - and would know it was done right!! I WILL NEVER RETURN TO THIS PETCO FOR GROOMING. The manager needs to take a Dale Carnegie course on How to Win Friends and Influence People!! read more

They did a great job. He was given a kerchief for the FIRST TIME EVER, but I noticed the prices increased, and they tried to upsell me on a "spa package" that I didn't ask for. What's going on at Petco. To completely upgrade the experience, the reception and cutting areas need to be spotless and upgraded. Nice start tho. read more

I booked an appointment online for my German Shepherd to be groomed at 2:30. Shortly after, I receive a call a call from Debra Ryan. She first asked if he is well-behaved while being bathed as she will be "the only one there tomorrow". I informed her that he does great but tries to drink the water and lick the brush. She first offered for me to bring him in another day as they will be closing at 4 and maybe it would be a good idea for me to take him when another employee will be able to assist her. I stated that there should be no issues as he goes great! She then stated to bring him in at 1:30. I made some arrangements on Christmas Eve to honor her wishes. I go in at 1:30 per requested and am greeted by Debra and another employee. (So much for being the only one there) as we're going over things I inform Debra that it had been a while since my dog had been properly groomed as we had been a part for two years due to relocating as my husband is in the military. While we were a part, my dog had been staying with my parents back in CA. I stated that my parents are older so it was difficult for them to take him to the groomers. Debra then looks at my dog and says "were you abused buddy, were you neglected". I am appalled that someone would 1. Think of that and 2. Have the audacity to say this!!!! I then corrected her and stated how great the living conditions were and how my parents treated him like a spoiled king!! (The other employee even made a comment how her parents spoil her dog) My dog is like family to all of us! We do not have children yet and my parents refer to my dog as their grandson!! I am still in disbelief that she would say that! It makes my stomach completely turn. I called my parents and they were tearful to even be accused of such disgusting thing! Debra took my dog back and just I had a feeling to stay close following her disgusting comment and her call yesterday. Sure enough she calls and says that my dog "freaked out and was so scared and she would be unable to complete the service" that is completely unlike him or his behavior. Following, I was able to walk-in at another location and of course no problems what so ever!!!! He did great and now looks great! I completely re-arranged my plans on Christmas Eve only to be in and out of Petco in 20 mins without any service.. and to be told such a disgusting thing by this "manager". Since we've moved to Cleveland I have been to this specific location for all our needs for my fur babies. I am completely let down by this character and after so many years of shopping at Petco you have 100% lost a loyal customer. Came here and bought 3 tiger fish or whatever they are called. Now I have neon tetras and was told they were ok to have in the same tank. All 3 of the tiger fish were killed by the neon tetras in literally one week. Highly upset. Not to mention I went up there to buy a few things for my fish tank.. no one asked if I needed help and I stood there waiting to talk to someone for them to ignore me and walk right past me. I went to the register to buy one thing I was sure of and the girl who cashed me out was the same girl that sold me the tiger fish & didn't even hand me my bag and was rude and Walked right away once I paid. She seemed aggravated for whatever reason. But I'm not coming back to this location. Horrible customer service at this location. read more

We were greeted with a smile upon entering the store and were asked about our puppy. Ty showed us where the food was and asked if we needed any other help. As we walked around the store another worker asked if we needed help as well but we didn't. Once I got to the front I noticed that Ty was a trainer so I found her to ask a few questions. OMGSH she was super helpful and gave us some info on how to train our little puppy Hyndrxx to stop being so mouthy. I will def be returning and I hope our experience will be just as good. Overall this is a nice Petco. It gets 4 stars due to the fact that they have trouble keeping inventory in stock. I have been able to get what I came for in most cases, but the last time I went there to purchase a couple things they were sold out. I understand it's a busy store in the heart of Cleveland, but that being said they should keep their inventory stocked better. I stood and waited for about 10 mins to speak with the guy in the fish department. He was speaking with another customer. At no time did he even acknowledge me, as standing there even though I actually moved with them as they were speaking. Thankfully, Renee the saleperson I always deal w/ came back form lunch. I was able to ask questions, and get input re purchasing Betas and compatible fish. Unfortunately, all the fish I purchased have all died w/in a 3-day period. The Beta are the only survivors, which defeated the purpose of buying compatible fish for the Beta tank. Renee, the salesperson is why I keep coming back. She is always polite, patient, and informative. Still there is room for improvement. read more

Do not get your dog groomed at Petco. I brought my long haired bichon poodle mix to get groomed because she had a little matting and specifically told them I wanted to keep her fur long. When I picked my pup up, I discovered they had SHAVED her! When I asked why, the lady casually told me that it was taking too long to get the knots out so they decided to shave her. So rather than calling and asking my permission to do so, they shaved her in the middle of a Cleveland winter!! If they would have called me I would have told them to stop because I would have actually taken the time to remove the knots or hired someone else to do what I was paying these lazy fools at Petco to do. I'll never go back and you shouldn't go either! read more

I used to shop regularly at this location as it's centrally located and the prices for pets' specific food brands usually aren't so bad - especially if they are on special with the Petco card. However, I will never go back to another Petco after the way my dog was treated - It started when they didn't call me, despite verifying my phone number twice, to tell me that he was ready to be picked up. I called after 4 hours and the girl who answered the phone was rude and made a statement along the lines of "We thought you abandoned him." When I went to get him, I was concerned - he went in happy and bouncy, came out tired and shaking. When I asked why he was acting strangely, I was told that he was "Tired from being pampered!" Not pleased, but also ready to have my dog back and in my care, I paid and we left. I had told them to cut him short for the summer months, so the fact that he was practically naked wasn't a huge deal until I got him home and realized that he was COVERED in razor burn and had cuts all over his legs and abdomen. Additionally, he had been acting weird about his favorite headpets and later in the evening, I noticed that his ears had both been sliced open (scissor cuts) and appeared to have been glued shut from the inside - either with skin glue or some form of styptic powder - but NO ONE at Petco had mentioned this to me. By the next morning, blueberry-sized scabs had formed where the cuts were, but luckily they didn't become infected or lead to other health issues. I called to ask what happened, but I was told that nothing notable happened during his cut and they did not know how his ears were cut. Great. read more

Well, I got a pet snail there today and the one lady that helped me get it didn't give me much info, only told me to feed it one to two small pellets a day. The cashiers were really nice, though. Very well kept clean wise, but seemed to not have much stock. It was also gross when instead of being normal and using a net to get out dead fish, the worker just scooped them out with her hand and threw them away. I named my snail ginato meaning gypsy as I pretty much take him everywhere I'm staying, whether it's a sleepover with my friends, or just staying over my grandmas. I also bought a small betta keeper, as my snail eats betta food and the cage came with food and a water purification kit, as snails are sensitive. It's great quality as it unexpectedly came with the rocks and the plant that I thought was pictured for display! Overall, was an easy transaction. Will be coming back for more accessories / plants / decor for ginato!! read more
