I had a very uncomfortable experience here. My 7-year-old daughter and I were simply looking at the hamsters and guinea pigs when the loss prevention employee watched us very closely the entire time. We never touched or picked up a single item, yet it felt like we were being treated with suspicion for no reason. There were about 10 other people in the store, yet the focus seemed to be on a dad and his 7-year-old daughter. It made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. There was enough variety here - cheaper more simple pet feeders and then more fancy ones I think even with a little camera on the front? I got a mid grade feeder with the help and advice of Madison. She helped me navigate through the options quickly - especially appreciated since I came in just minutes before closing with a planned trip the next morning. I live in Hayward and completely forgot this was here. It's way closer to the part of Hayward i live in, rather than going to Union City like i usually do. This location seems a bit smaller than the UC but it's super organized. There was ample parking on a Saturday evening and a few other patrons there. Staff is super friendly and helpful! They also have a great selection of items i needed for my cat. We'll be coming to this Petco for all of our cat needs from now on. read more

Bought an auto feeder online because I was going out of town, ended up not using it and after the vacation and other events, I realized I'd better set up the feeder or return it. Turns out, it's not going to work in my house because of the wifi, so I ordered one without it for $50, thinking I could return at the store. I was a 2 days over the return date and they said I wasn't allowed to return it, the employee said there was "no way, the computer won't allow it". It was $135... and I can't return it? It's just 2 days over? The employee told me it's the store policy. I called PetCo main office, they said I should call and try work with the store manager and possibly make an exchange. When I called the store a few hours later, I asked for the manager to discuss the issue, he was on break, but the same sales person -a blonde with a nasty attitude- got on the phone and spoke for him saying he was out, he was new, "he doesn't know anything". I asked again to speak with the manager and tried to leave my number to call me back, but she talked over me and continued to insist there was nothing they could do. I didn't want to listen to her--I wanted to speak to the manager. She did not listen to me so I had to speak louder and louder because she would not stop talking, and she proceeded to get louder and kept saying the same thing about store policy. Hmph. I've worked in retail with computer systems --sometimes there is a back door that IT can go thru and hep me out. I'm pretty sure, since she's not managing the store, that she doesn't know all the ins and outs of store and surely, people management. I don't shop there often and I may not go back. read more

Great customer service today when I went in to buy a beta fish. I was greeted by the girl walking in. I asked where the fish were located and she informed me. I found my fish and bought a small aquarium and food. When I got to the counter the same girl (cashier) asked if I had the solution for the water. I told her no and she went back and brought back two different options for me to choose from. Great service! The transaction was smooth and the other guy in the store was friendly too. I've had two interactions with this petco and unfortunately, I don't think I'll return. The first, a few days before Christmas, I stopped in maybe 7 mins before closing to get a petco gift card bc my mom takes her dog to get groomed there. Obviously I checked the hours of operation before I went and I had a busy day so, as mentioned, I stopped inside 7 mins before they close and instead of someone greeting me warmly, someone yelled at me "WE CLOSE IN 5 MINS!" It was very rude so I yelled back I just need a Giftcard. The people working there then proceeded to watch me walk around to find a Giftcard until I eventually asked. That was the first not so great experience. Now, unplanned, a few days after Christmas ; I decided to shelter and adopt a puppy my friend found abandoned before Christmas. As a new pet parent and puppy mom, I just wanted to get this lil Chihuahua puppy checked out as soon as possible bc I noticed a few things I wanted a vet to look at. Long story short, the plus is petco uses Vetco which is a mobile clinic except you have to book your appointments online and no one in store can give medical advice and I learned after the fact, there's not even an advice line to call. I only chose this location bc it has the soonest possible appointment available. So, I get to my appointment right on time, and this is where I was pissed because I used to work in retail and I practice kindness, but these two girls who were checking in people with the vet appointments, were very rude and not friendly or happy frankly. They were rolling their eyes and not helpful. I told them I needed a wellness exam, I found this puppy, I have no records and I just want to get her started on her shots and you would think I was speaking some other language bc they were NOT HELPFUL. Zero customer service and visibly rolled their eyes at me. They just kept repeating the same thing to me, ignore my questions and not offering any insight or advice. I was feeling flustered and confused as a new mom and they were just judging me and not really explaining the vaccine packages well enough and kept asking me for paperwork I DID NOT HAVE!!! Like why are you working this job if you're this unpleasant? Especially during the holidays? I even told them I'm feeling flustered and just need guidance and they acted like I was bothering them. The actual vet who gave the vaccines was helpful but outside of that, I doubt I will return to this petco. It's a shame because my mom always goes to petco but this was a very terrible experience and I'm only giving two stars because at least they had a gift card when I needed one and could host the mobile vet o clinic in a pinch bc I did not have a vet as a new dog lol. I hope they treat their other customers better but it really ruined my experience and diminished my trust with my new puppy. My kitty has food allergies and it has been a nightmare trying to find dry, wet and treats for her. She also chews everything and eats what she should not so finding toys to entertain her that are safe is a challenge as well. Yet she is worth all the effort and hassle. Went Into Petco near closing time with some returns. A young man Chris behind the register was very helpful and patient with me. When he had trouble finding a product he asked for help amd then called for a manager to approve the return. Chris was personable and professional he is a bit quiet but that's not a bad thing but sometimes people misunstand that as ride. Certainty not in this case. Chris also helped me when I dropped A toy and I could not find it. I enjoyed my interaction at Petco with Chris and feel he represents Petco well. Having a kitty with special needs it's hard to find everything I need for her at one place. Having the diversity of Petco and Pet Food Express being close to me and having good employees that are helpful is essential and makes my shopping experience enjoyable. I just adopted a 2mo kitten from the Hayward animal shelter, after walking in, I was greeted by a young woman named Aubrey who was very nice, after I told her of my new family member she was kind enough to give me their checklist of needs for a new pet. I was able to pick up a lot of my supplies and she was very helpful. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience especially since I just moved in Hayward from Sacramento and don't know the area at all. I went into the Petco in Castro Valley yesterday and asked an employee could I see the King Snake they have for sale. There was a young white male with glasses and tattoos who said," I am sorry, you can't touch or handle the King Snake you might run out of the store with the animal without paying and it's against our rules." I explained to the male employee that I work for the Fire Department, showed him my wallet badge and Department ID, not that I am better than any other patron, but just trying to convince the employee I wasn't a thief and he he replied, "Nothing I can do about it, sorry, I'm just obeying the rules from my manager!" A young white girl with glasses and platinum blonde hair and tattoos me over to the snakes cage and attempted to pick up the snake, as usual he urinated in her hand, she stated, " Sorry he doesn't want to be handled now, I have to go and wash my hands." She walked away without telling me anything else. I got the feeling that because I was a Black man, they thought I was going to steal the animal by the way the employees interacted with me, this isn't my first rodeo experiencing this type of behavior. Both employees were exhibiting terrible customer service. Since when can a store deny you petting or holding an animal before buying it so you can get to know the animal or looking for any type of injuries. It's a shame that in 2023 that a person of color who is 58 years old still gets treated with hostility and distrust just for trying to buy a King Snake. I will never shop there again! read more

I came in last night to pick up a new 20 gallon tank. I don't know much about turtle, and the sweet employees stopped what they were doing to assist me. Philip told me what I needed and not needed for my turtle. I learned so much from him & he even gave me a turtle care pamphlet. They went above and beyond & offered to help me carried it out to my car. I haven't received these kind of 10 star customer service in a long time, but I'll definitely be coming back. I pretty much have a zoo at my house! Two dogs, fish, and most recently, a bunny. A young man named Philip helped me get the perfect set up with my bunny while being completely honest of exactly what it needs. I normally go in about every other week and he always seems to be working. He also seems to be very knowledgeable about the best nutrition I can get with my dogs. One of them has really sensitive skin and almost every dog food seem to not agree with her. (Wish I was lying!) I took my nieces to their neighborhood Petco to buy some feeder fish when I watched them recently. My niece knew exactly what to do, but I wanted to kill some time, so we walked around the store looking at all of the animals and supplies. After browsing throughout the store, we got help from a very friendly employee. I believe his name was Brandon. Anyway, he helped us get exactly what we needed, and he did it with a sense of humor and was very kind. My nieces and I frantically returned looking for a lost bo-bo (blanket). This place need to be visited by PETA and shut down. Every animal in this place care here is horrendous. I felt so sorry for all of them today. The cat owner fills their cage up with dry food and leave them. Their eyes are crusty brown liquid coming out of them. They're in small cages for for one but three inside. They never get out to roam and play. All of the reptile cages are mislabeled. There were dead goldfish on the floor in the aquarium area. The staff here is really nice and their on hands are amazing which is why their reviews are decent i see. However this place should only sell pet items and not pets. No animal should be a pet but if they have to be this isn't the care facility for them before they get a new home. So sad! read more

Neighborhood Petco -- this location has been here for years and has always had the things I needed in-stock such as the type of food, snacks/treats, toys, and even has the cutest/most stylish leashes and collars to choose from. I like it when they have BOGO deals on treats. Never had to wait in a line at checkout and my last visit I was asked if I needed help out to my car b/c I might have bought a lot and forgot to bring in the bags from my car which I thought was a nice gesture, but I managed to carry it all myself. Always have been able to find a parking spot in the row that's closest to the door, too. read more

I'm giving 2 stars because of the friendly customer service, even though I'm usually an in-and-out/don't-bother-me shopper. The store is neat and organized, which should be easy to do since it's always empty when I'm there. I've only been here twice in the past, both for emergencies. However, I will not be shopping here again after today. I decided to buy some emergency treats since my dog was having a "ruff" day. I settled on a bag of treats, and read the ingredients as per usual. That's when I noticed that the bag's "Best Before" date was MAY 24, 2017!!! I didn't check the surrounding brands/bags so maybe it was just this one. I know "best before" is different from "expired," but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Seeing as this store is never busy, I wouldn't be surprised if this extends to dog food and maybe even cat items. Amazon all the way from here on out! My experience here was so-so. The first time I visited Petco with our puppy I made a fairly great experience. The guy (maybe a manager?) was super friendly and very knowledgeable. He made good recommendation as far as my purchases were concerned and made me aware of the puppy playtime this locations hosts on the weekends. At that point in time I would have probably given a solid 4 star based on my interaction that day. What bumped it down was my experience last weekend when we stopped by for their puppy play time. The dog trainer was super nice and friendly but the entire process seemed a tad unorganized. Sometimes it was unclear which puppy would be allowed to play next which was a little frustrating. I think it would have helped if there would have been a general announcement of how the process would work since there were so many puppies. What I found a tad unprofessional was when I overheard their new hire complain to a customer about how she was unhappy that she wasn't allowed to be part of puppy play time that day. Her annoyance that day was obvious. When we left I approached her and asked her if she could tell me if our puppies shot records were now in their system or if I would still have to bring them to every Petco for grooming or dog training. Her answer was "I don't really know". I understand that as a new person you don't have answers yet but at the same time you find the answer if a customer has a question. I assume the non caring attitude was stemmed by her annoyance of not being part of puppy training that day.... Overall, it's not a bad location but some improvements are definitely needed. read more

I normally don't support or shop at Petco for several reasons. A major one being the lack of customer service that is consistent across all Petco locations. Another being the poor condition of the animals here. Years ago I bought a guinea pig here (from then on, I learned adoption is the way to go even for small furry guys) that came to me extremely sick with an upper respiratory infection and almost didn't make it. I've also seen dead animals in the terrarium style cages, and when bringing this to the attention of the employees, they act like it happens all the time and completely lack compassion about it. As an animal lover, I can't stand to see things like this. These fatal errors can be avoided if Petco didn't try to crowd 30 mice in a 1 foot by 2 foot Plexiglass box. Just saying. It's clear that profit is more important over the wellbeing of the little guys. That being said, I have been forced to shop at Petco due a few slipups in my time management, and I totally blame myself for that. They are open an hour later than my preferred pet supply chain, so they get one additional star for being there. But otherwise they are disappointing. I came to this particular location to help my mom pick out some cat cans in an emergency. She ran out of cans and our preferred store had closed. Luckily, I know my pet products very well. But the Petco workers don't know that. And yet, they don't ask if we need help. They barely glance in our direction. Several times my mom, who speaks loudly, would say "Hmm, I wonder if they have this brand?" We walked past a few employees who saw us going up and down each aisle, providing plenty of opportunity for any of them to say something like "Hi, are you finding everything OK, hey I heard you ask about this brand - let me show you where it is, I'm so sorry but we don't carry that brand - here's a similar one"...literally, anything. Customer service should not be hard for people who are hired to do just that. The store is very poorly organized with the cans and bags haphazardly thrown on the shelves in order of brand. When we checked out, the young guy behind the counter was pretty disinterested. He watched my mom struggle to get the stack of cans together and at no point did he offer her a bag. My mom even made a comment about this as she was walking out of the store. I'm sure he heard her, but he still didn't offer a bag. As a customer, you shouldn't have to ask for a bag. Ugh, next time, I will make sure to plan better so I can avoid these interactions and supporting a place that really doesn't have the best interest of the animals in mind. read more

Has the greatest experience here today. I really needed a new harness for my Maltipoo who is an actual Houdini and is able to get out of EVERY harness I have ever purchased. Chris did such a great job to recommend the type of harness that my pup could not wrestle out of. He fit her with the right size then found a perfect color. I came in to get my 2 year old 2 tiny goldfish as a pet. The man said he wouldn't sell me one unless I bought a 40 gallon tank because of "standards." I left $20 later with a beta fish, small tank, fish food and water conditioner. He said he wouldn't sell me the Beta fish unless I bought the water condition and food. I get home and fill the tank up with water and the conditioner. I go to pick up the tank and move it not even a foot and the entire bottom cracked and water EVERYWHERE!! To top it off the fish won't eat the food he suggested. I will never be back to this location! I found it absolutely absurd to not sell my 2 year old a 75 cent goldfish (a feeder fish) without buying a 40 gallon tank. read more

I typically don't usually go to Petco but I recently just got a new puppy and needed a few quick supplies before heading home. It was on the way so eh.... Customer service was 50/50. This was early Saturday morning right when they opened; only one guy in and thank goodness he was able to help me out (and gave my puppy a few nice cuddles). When the other employee came in, she kept her sunglasses on for a bit and sauntered out of sight, I guess that morning was bad for her. That one experience was nice but looking at the place where they display the cats for adoption, it definitely needs a good cleaning (the food and water was disgusting). For the hamsters, poor little guys are just crammed in there with sub par cleaning. Also, there were a lot of cookies around the store where it seems like customers snagged a treat from the front and let their dogs snack on it while shopping, leaving half stepped on crumbs behind... just left there. I'm glad I had my baby in a carrier because I wouldn't want him licking that at all... Final Thoughts: Good for emergencies... just for that. read more
