I am so grateful for Judge and his team. We came to them hoping to resolve my dogs reactivity to other dogs after being attacked. After our initial evaluation, Judge said the 12x12 would be the best option for our girl, Rogue. Initially we were hesitant as it seemed like a lot of training time and money. But we were so wrong! We needed all those trainings, both for her as well as for us handlers. And there is a payment plan which was really nice to split out the payments. We just completed the 12x12 Training and our relationship with our girl is so different. She still has some reactivity, but I've noticed it really depends on the other dog and how they approach her. Woweee, I cannot say ENOUGH how grateful I am to have found Judge. We signed up Kira for the 24 sessions (12 private/12 group classes) from the time she was a pup at about 4 months old. We were having a really hard time with recall when we first started (she was small enough to squeeze through a fence and I had to chase her 1/2 a mile before I was able to get her, and I don't run ). Now, not only does Kira recall like a pro, but she is so good with sit/down stays. She was also very timid and shy (very common for an Alaskan Klee Kai), but now loves meeting new people and furriends. Her loose and off leash walking has also improved tremendously. Enzo has finished his 24 in total sessions. 12 private / 12 group sessions and wow the difference I see in my dog is crazy, it went from he couldn't stay still to him staying at his down position till I tell him to come to me. I have no doubt this is a great school, but I will never know. I think I read another review where he didn't show or something. Since he had such great reviews we thought we would travel across the bay. Got an appointment super easy. Showed up at the location and waited and waited and waited. We called and he was apparently taking a dog to the ER. No issues, we get it. We did't know the whole story, but he had an emergency. We knew it was not life threatening. I think he was with a dog ready to give birth. It was more that he didn't know he had an appointment. He told us he would let us know and try to come to us later that same day. Bay Area K9 training has been nothing short of amazing in helping me with my 1.5 year old puppy Atlas. Atlas is a very high energy, 65lb Labradoodle and though that may not sound like much, he's a handful. He is extremely athletic and was not very friendly with other dogs. Walks out in public with him were extremely difficult because he loved to run after anyone and anything in full speed, taking me with him. Atlas also had a really hard time differentiating his behavior with humans and other dogs. He used to jump on everyone who walked through the door and barking at them constantly if they wouldn't play with him. I did 12 private sessions and 12 group sessions and can happily say that all these issues have been resolved. Atlas now walks next to me off leash, without running after anyone or anything. We are so impressed with the changes and how disciplined Buddy is. When we dropped off Buddy he wasn't very obedient, it was hard to take him out in public and was hyper excited. Ive been working with Judge for my husky Kino for about 2 years now and Ive seen amazing results working with him. We go on at least 2 off leash hikes every month and it is so so important that I have voice command over my husky. If anyone who is reading this that has a husky they know that they listen to you whenever they feel like it. And when you are out of the house and off leash that is the most dangerous combination. On top of that my husky is usually an asshole and tries to dominate other dogs by running up to them and sizing them up by putting his neck over theirs which results in a fight of they dont back down. Luckily in the last 6 months we havent had an incident and we are so grateful that we came to judge with our training needs. Below is a few things about his training style and program for those that want some detail. First off, he is a no games trainer when it comes to the dogs. Some see it as being harsh and unnecessarily aggressive with the corrections, but Ive learned that you have to set the clear guidelines. Last thing you want is a vet bill of $1,000 for messing up another dog. Or a $300 vet bill for your husky running out the door and trying to kill the neighbors cat (yeah both happened to me its why we contacted Judge). I see a lot of the 1 star reviews talking about him choking their dog. Yeah well its effective and I kind of had the same initial reactive but then I learned that it doesn't hurt the dog as much as you think and my dogs still happy to see me everyday I come home from work. Second, hes big on pushing for group training which I also didn't understand why at first and I remember not really feeling like I understood his reasoning. The group training's been the biggest help for our dog because like most dogs when they get outside and see other dogs they noise cancelling goes on and its like they don't hear you. No they just don't want to listen to you because they are so focused on the other dog. Mine in particular was always concerned the other dogs were out to fight him. After 2 group sessions I saw a huge change in his comfort level around other dogs. Third, the only issue I had with Judge was scheduling and maybe a training regiment. He was like 30 mins for 2 sessions but honestly I'm a business owner myself and I kind of forgot and didn't confirm with him in the morning. Just make sure you confirm in the am with him and you shouldn't have a problem. And there's not a set training course with him so I'd advise writing down all the issues and things you want to correct with your dog and go over with him when you see him to get the most out of every session. read more

I hear all the reviews on punctuality and professionalism, but in our experience it was not nearly as bad as some say. We did have to verify if classes were on a few times but the FACT of the matter is that my dog is WAY ahead of where he was prior to enrolling in Bay Area K9 obedience courses. I have learned the skills to work with my dog and frankly the training was for the handlers (wife & I) and not the dog. Sometimes you have to be stern with your dog to correct unwanted behavior they have grown accustomed to getting away with because the handler has allowed it. It's a stepping stone to getting the dog where you want him to be. Once corrected there is no or less need for sternness IMO. I've been to the group trainings, I've seen all the different level of handlers and how a dog will not cooperate unless corrected immediately at time of infraction. Some folks just don't have the stomach for discipline. Go look at a pack of dogs and see how they would discipline a member of the pack who is not in line. I guarantee you it's not with licks and kisses. I'm very happy with my pups progress and looking forward to higher level courses in the future. read more

Hi Guys! I'm sure a lot of you know how hard it is to raise a puppy. Training, time and attention go hand-in-hand and it can be extremely tasking to train a dog if you've had no experience in doing so. Our pup Remy (while he is extremely cute and cuddly) was a nightmare! He is a 55 lb Goldendoodle at 6 months of age and loved to literally DRAG US on walks, chewed on everything, didn't listen to any commands unless he was in mood and wouldn't let things go that he picked up from the ground and put into his mouth (sticks, socks, etc.). Long story ahead, but in summation: My German Shepherd desperately needed training and Bay Area K9 has been a blessing. They are flexible, cost effective, personable, and the training is customized to fit you and your dog. I am a travel RN and take my German Shepherd Jackson with me. I had trained my previous dog but it became clear early on that I did not have the proper tools or knowledge to train Jackson. I needed help. Jackson constantly pulled when we walked, jumped on people, and went after dogs passing by. It wasn't fun for me or the dog! Traveling for work I knew I had to have a well behaved dog so set about looking for a trainer. I needed someone who I could get started with right away because I was only in the area for the length of my contract. I contacted a few, but Judge was the only one who could see me for an evaluation the next week, and boy am I glad he was able to. The evaluation was about an hour and at the end Judge told me he had a spot and we worked out what length of program would be right for both mine and Jackson's needs. One of the things I really love about Bay Area K9 is that the costs are listed on the website, so you have some idea of what you will be paying. My work contract was originally ending in August so he offered to finish the last few via Zoom if I had to leave. Judge sent me the contract, I signed up, and started the next week. Thankfully my contract has been extended and I can complete my training in person (and may even sign up for extra classes). I have not completed all my sessions, I am a little over half way through, but the difference in Jackson is AMAZING! We can go for walks, I can take him out with me, he's learning so many new things, and so am I. We are both much, much happier. In fact, during today's sessions another dog came up to us while we were training, got about 15-20 feet away and Jackson stayed in his down position. That would not have happened 2 months ago. Judge is a great trainer and tailors the training to the dog. Instead of having a program of "First A, then B, then C, then D" he figures out what works for each dog and introduces tools when the dog is ready instead of at a specific time. Judge has also been extremely flexible with my schedule. As a nurse I don't have set days off and while we try to do the same day each week it isn't always possible. Having a trainer with that kind of flexibility is invaluable. Look, dog training isn't cheap, and the cost may be a deterrent for some people, but the value you get with Bay Area K9 is more than worth it. Judge is not overcharging (he's likely on the lower end of the cost spectrum) and the results are worth it. I started with a 16 month old, 75 lb, nippy German Shepherd who would practically pull my arm off to get to another dog; and now I have an 19 month old 95 lb German Shepherd who I can confidently walk around other dogs with almost no issues (we still have a few but hey, we're working on them). Before Judge going out in public was such a hassle with my Labrador he was really really reactive to dogs even from the other side of the park & as a bigger breed it was hard to get him under control. My dog previously did group training with Bravo Pup in Berkeley & as soon as Copper would bark at any dog the trainer would stick us in a corner secluded from everyone else without ever really trying. Because of that bad experience I was hesitant to put more money into another trainer if they weren't actually going to help, but my dog's behavior got to a point where it was incredibly difficult to take him out anywhere. In the end I am so happy I decided to go to Judge, we did the 12 private 12 group sessions and he not only helped me get Copper's reactiveness under control but has also taught me how to make him obedient in every other aspect. We haven't yet started the group sessions but I already see a complete 180 in Copper's behavior we're able to pass dogs without problems and even when he does seem to act out I know how to get him under control because of Judge. He will teach you step by step how to correct your dog as well as what not to do and how to better yourself as an owner. I came across Bayarea K9 through IG. Looking through his videos, I figured to give him a call for my German Shepherd. I have 2 other smaller breed dogs before I got my German Shepherd & they aren't the best behaved dogs, but for their size I was able to handle them. I knew it wasn't going to be the same for Chewbacca. Seeing that he will be close to 100 lbs fully grown, I wanted to make sure my family would be able to handle him. Judge is the only trainer & at times I understand he won't get back to you within minutes, but he will always get back to you. Regarding some reviews saying he doesn't check up with your dog's progress, I felt like it was up to the owners to update him. Judge isn't there with you 24/7 to know what issues you may have. If I ever had an issue or questions, I can text him & he would call with advice. He will show you how to properly train & correct your dog's behaviors. Chewbacca has finally finished his private lessons & I'm happy with the outcome. If I can list a few things about my experience with Bay Area K9, the training is: Effective, Personable, Disciplined, and very satisfied. I contacted Judge via Instagram one day for some services about my two german shepherds (3 & 4 YO) and puppy. I had been training at another facility for some time but wanted to see what other trainers were out there in the Bay Area. Judge is a one man show handling everything on his own. Group classes on Saturdays but subject to change with days notice from Judge. My experience of training with Judge is beyond expectations. My bf and I always come to class eager to learn and have found his methods very useful. Each end of the session I always ask questions and given homework to work on until the next session. My dogs have some training but there were methods that I learned from Judge that I couldn't get from the other training facility. The highlights here is I get a phone call from Judge after class or midweek to see how my dogs are doing in terms of progress, what isn't working, what would I like to learn in the next class, or what improvements he can make to make the class better. In the first 10 minutes of class, I like that he gets the group together and has the dogs meet one another. Carefully monitoring each dogs reaction, Judge shows the class how to calm your dog when other dogs are approaching them so they aren't threatened and end up in a dog fight. I've had 3 group sessions with Bay Area K9 and plan to go further with my dogs training. I would highly recommend anyone with a puppy or dog here. The group training has been so effective with the little time I've spent so far. Pricing on training is VERY good deal. It sounds like a lot but the takeaway makes your money worth every penny. I'm a first time dog owner(mommy) and very protective of my baby pit bull Blue. She survived Parvo when she was 8 weeks and ever since then I didn't want her to go through any pain (she is 8 months now). I researched a lot and wanted to find a trainer that was aligned with my beliefs in dog training. I didn't want harsh corrections for Blue but at the same time I wanted the most effective way for her to obey our commands. My fiance and I didn't have much background in raising a puppy and training her. So as you can imagine she wasn't very focused, she'd majorly pull on her leash when we'd try to walk her, she wouldn't listen to our commands, etc. Thankfully we found Judge and after meeting with him and he analyzed Blue, I felt very comfortable knowing Blue would be in good hands. Judge is very honest and will only suggest the amount of private sessions he sees fit. We had 5 private sessions and 5 group sessions. By the second private session my fiance and I felt like Blue was a changed dog! She obeyed our commands and much better behaved. She is able to focused sit, down with distractions, climb, jump over, recall, socialize with other dogs/humans, and best of all she does amazing in her walks now and I'm able to jog with her now without her tripping me. Judge was able to help us achieve all of this with food based rewards. At the end of the day Blue is happy and therefore we are happy :) I'd definitely recommend training your dog with Bay Area K9. read more

Yelp made me choose a star just to write this review.... Judge is a complete rip off!! We signed a contract, paid him $800 in full and we have yet to complete our training. We had four sessions and should have another at least 4 based on our CONTRACT. He basically took our money and ran. It's been four months since we had our last training and we can't even get him to commit to a date or show. We adjust our schedule to accommodate the training just for him to not even have the decency to call to say he isn't going to show up. When we first met him we were so impressed with what his own dogs do and how well trained they are. Our sessions were to be one hour and all four that we did have he was late. He'd let the dogs play a little to get the extra energy out so that they will focus but then he would spend most of his time checking his phone. Our hour training each time cut shorter and shorter, one did not even last 35 minutes. Then came the just not show up at all. NO PHONE CALL, no reschedule. Doesn't even acknowledge. Hey Judge, we have a contract with you. We PAID YOU $800 and you just took our money and ran. Yeah your ability to train dogs are impressive however you are a horrible business man. Rumor is that others have tried to take you to small claims for the same reason, sounds like a good idea to me! Anyone reading this review, be cautious and do your homework a bit more before giving Bay Area K9 Training/Judge your hard earned money. I am SO grateful I found Judge and Bay Area K9! My pup Cleo, is my first dog and was super reactive to other dogs, so I wasn't comfortable taking her out in public. I was in tears when I called Judge six months ago, frustrated and considering rehoming her. Judge's patient yet straightforward approach was as much about training me as training Cleo. We just completed our last class (24 total) and the change is nothing short of miraculous. Cleo is obedient, responds to commands and is so much less reactive around other dogs. We are just finishing up our basic obedience classes with Judge and we are so glad we found him. He has provided us with guidance being brand new dog owners. We recused a 6 month pitbull mix from the Humane Society and was going off what the internet and YouTube had to offer for the first couple weeks. The information and wide range of training methods were too much that we figured we needed an expert to not only train our puppy, but train us as handlers as well. Once we received our initial evaluation, we knew Judge was our guy. From the start, he communicated what the goals were for the basic obedience course. He gave us a verbal outline on what each session should look like depending on if we did our homework from the previous week. Judge is extremely knowledgable and is flexible with his schedule. Judge is the type of dog trainer you want for any dog, big or small, submissive or aggressive, energetic or lazy. We have a 60 lb pitbull mix and a 20 lb chihuahua mix. We thought our little one was aggressive because he barks at other dogs like hes going to kill them (but he never does anything to them, just wants to sniff). My pitbull puppy is really submissive and shy and has never had formal training before. But she was really jumpy (not aggressive). Judge immediately was able to figure out their different personalities and assess their needs. He said my little dog (who has been trained before) does not need 1 on 1 classes but can benefit from the group classes So my pitbull got 4 personal classes and they both got 4 group classes. We appreciated that he was honest, instead of trying to upsell us, regardless of our dogs' needs. 1 on 1 classes are great because he comes to your home and sees all the bad behaviors that can go on there. Being in your home environment is great because it makes you think of all the questions you need to ask and show examples of what happens and Judge will be there to address all of it. Group classes are really awesome because they get to practice their at-home training out and about with all the distractions of other people and other dogs around. We will be paying for additional outdoor group classes indefinitely because it lets them socialize with other dogs that are also learning obedience, they get to try some basic agility, and they (+ us humans) get to reinforce everything we've learned -- training your dog is not a temporary thing. Its a lifetime effort and we're glad to have Judge guide us through it. read more

I'm so grateful for the training provided through Bay Area K9 Training. I went with the 24 week program. 12 1 on 1 classes and 12 group training classes. There is a lot of homework and dedication it takes for how reactive my husky/mini schnauzer rescue needed. Some weeks I wasn't as dedicated as I needed to be and my trainer held me accountable. I am now able to take Harry with me into stores, hiking on trails, camping in a tent, everything I dreamed off having with a dog . Now I have to try flying with him which I am confident he will do well because of the socialization training and skills we learned through this program. Thank you.
