We have a 16-week-old puppy we've been taking here for about 4 weeks for their free puppy play sessions on the weekends. Great concept: 30-minute sessions for puppies under 6 months of age to learn appropriate play and to socialize with lots of other dogs and learn good bite inhibition. Unfortunately, the trainer (Betsy) who oversees these sessions doesn't seem to understand the purpose of them. Our puppy has been progressively getting better about being calmer during play because we've asked the trainer to interrupt his play more often to have him sit and get a treat before continuing play. This is a proven and standard method used by world class trainers such as Ian Dunbar, used to teach the puppy that the owner stopping play and asking for a recall or a sit is not the end of the play session--rather, the puppy gets rewarded with play for a good sit and pause/calm moment. The trainer here began basically punishing our puppy for excited play (simple and common things like pawing or jumping, nothing inappropriate) by asking us to sit out for 10+ minutes and watch the other puppies play. She said he needed to "be calmer," but how are you supposed to teach a 16-week-old puppy to be calmer by forcing him out of the play sessions for 10 minutes or more so he can become frustrated? This isn't a class where puppies are learning obedience or walking on leash. This is a play session. You have to teach puppies impulse control in stages, progressively making the little breaks in play longer over time. You can't suddenly ask for 10 minutes plus and expect the puppy to learn anything. It's ridiculous that she doesn't know this and, again, is punishing a puppy for excitement--a normal puppy behavior--with frustration. She doesn't seem to understand the basic tenet of animal training: reward for good behavior. Forcing a young puppy to sit out for a long period of time and watch other pups play is punishment, with no reward. She's basically training puppies like ours to become frustrated when seeing other dogs play. We tried talking to the store manager, who was absolutely zero help and said outright that he would not be talking with the trainer about the situation. We won't be going back to this store for any reason. read more

I had recently adopted two rats from Petco. Let me start this review with how they keep their enclosures... when I adopted the rats they were kept in glass tanks that are fall too small with bedding that was quite full of feces. I cannot see how the ventilation would be very good and glass tanks are known to lead to ammonia buildup. I'm not sure how often they change their cages... but I was really not happy with how they were keeping their rats. I noticed one of the rats in the enclosure was breathing a bit funny but I confess I didn't think anything of it until I got home and noticed that one of the rats I adopted was wheezing. On the contract it stated that they would pay for the vet bill and I called Petco immediately to confirm it. They told me to bring the rats in, I got my money back, and I was assured that I'd get the rats back, I would get a phone call early this week, and they, along with the rest of the rats, were going to be checked out. By today, Wednesday, I have heard nothing from them and I called to see what was up. I was informed that I was given the wrong information and I was supposed to take the pets to their vet first and they would pay the bill, and if returned the pets were their property again. No one bothered to call me tell me this, and it had been 5 days since I took them back. When I had taken them back, they refused to adopt them back to me because I used cloth for a bedding, a practice I have gotten from a wildlife rehabilitation that I work out. What I believe to be the manager, though I am unsure, told me that this was a poor practice due to ammonia build up making the rats sick, however it is a recommended alternative: http://ratguide.com/care/environment/cage_bedding_litter.php http://www.ehow.com/how_4599892_use-fabric-bedding-rats.html http://www.suite101.com/content/cages-and-bedding-for-pet-rats-a67847 It was obvious this guy did not do his research and was rather hypocritical considering of the state that Petco was keeping their own animals and along with the fact that they *sold sick animals to their customers*. I am certainly never shopping here again. read more

We've had good experiences with the groomers and then not so good. THANKFULLY they are very approachable and correct any problems that are brought to their attention. The down side is it can be VERY crowded and busy. The space is WAY too small for such a busy place. If you go, I would recommend an appointment and asking when a slower time is so things aren't so hectic. I have a small nervous dog so that works for us. I also ask that she isn't put in a holding kennel or dried to cut down on her anxiety and that helps. read more

The workers really do care and work to keep customers and pets happy. They will match prices if you mention a higher price is available elsewhere locally at a store. It may not be the fanciest place but if I get great customer service, the store gets my business. read more

Gets most of it's points for being the only Pet store in Bremerton. Still, it's employees are actually very nice and always kind to my dog though their grooming doesn't groom Bully breeds, but that's sort of the standard out here so I guess I can't gripe too much. Either way, there's a lot of different options for food here at better prices than you can find most other places but the staff isn't really well knowledgeable about them so it's best that you come in informed. My dog likes it here though and usually gets a free treat on the way out. Get a Petco card here. It'll save you a lot of money in the long run. read more

Shannon is fabulous with my Lily. She is the only groomer that can get her bows to stay in from visit to visit. We take her about every 5 weeks and the bows stay in the whole time. read more

I absolutely love this Petco. I recently moved and I miss them so much. They even called to say they missed me and my dog and see how we were doing. They said if we were ever in the area they would love to see us again even if we didn't get him groomed or buy anything. They really made me feel welcomed and the love they had for Wall-E made such a huge different. He has never been so happy after a grooming and never looked as good afterwards. read more

I recently had my Pomeranian groomed here. The customer service is good. Shannon was very pleasant throughout the whole process. However, the haircut wasn't anything to rave about. I always worry about cutting my Pom's hair because I do not want to ruin his undercoat. I asked if she would cut his hair short, but didn't want to get it too short. She did do a good job of that, which earns her kudos, but the cut itself was choppy. Nothing was blended together. Overall, it looked like it would if a little kid cut their own hair. Spending $51 for a mediocre hair cut just doesn't set well for someone who barely pays to have their own hair cut. read more

I have been going to Petco years. This last time I went really left a bad impression. I made a purchase in the fish department, actualy got zebra snails, two of the three I got where jus empty shells. Bummer, now I have to go back and get this taken care of. I went back with my entire purchase receipt and all and was assisted right away. I was given two more snails. I asked if she wanted the dead ones back. She said no thanks I have a bunch of them already. She handed me the bag with the two live ones and escorted me back to registers, my two dead snails and one live on in one bag and two live snails in the new bag. I stepped up to the counter to complete my transaction and I was told that she had to take the next person in line at the other register first. I stepped back and let someone else come up to the register and "waited my turn". I finaly left and went home...added the snails to my tank and noticed that one was dead......krap. I'm not going back again. read more

Wow... I just called to try to make an appointment for my 14 year old pug to be groomed. She has been there before but because I don't have a document saying that my 14 YEAR OLD pug doesn't have rabies, they refuse to take her in. I understand policies but come the F on. Are you really that scared that my pug will attack you??? As someone who has worked with dogs for years, I would be more concerned with an animal having the Parvovirus than anything else. This is why Bremerton buisnesses fail. Your perception is way too off that you come across as delusional. This is a Navy town, money is money and sometimes you have make a better judgement call in order to make it. Lucky your store is a chain. Don't let those scary pugs bite you in the ass next time. I know how terrifying they can be. read more

Dog training with Betsy is great! We signed up for the Adult level 1 training class for our 7 month old pup, and we were in a class with 3 other dogs which felt like the perfect size. Betsy is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about her work, always willing to stay late to answer any additional questions or concerns you may have. We worked on sit, stay, down, loose leash walking, and leave it, to name a few, as well as on concepts to help transition your puppy out of some annoying behaviors within the home. Highly recommend this class for anyone who has a new pup that needs some basic obedience. Often times they run deals also to help you get some sort of discount or Pals rewards back! read more

I've only ever been in here a few times to pick up some special food for my dog, but each time it has been a pleasant experience. The floor is clean and the store is well lit and organized. The staff is always eager to help, which is quite a relief with such a wide selection of product to choose from. I've never used the grooming services offered, but am starting to consider it based on the employee interactions I've had here. Very nice place. read more

Highly unsatisfied and even a little mortified by my dogs haircut. I would give a zero out of five if possible. I have a Pomeranian and explicitly told the groomers that she needed a TRIM and that we LIKE that she's fluffy and want to keep that. Literally just needed to be evened out and remove a couple of mats. The groomer stated she understood and repeated my instructions back to me. When I arrived to pick up my pup later that evening, not only had she practically shaved my dog, but the cut was uneven with random tufts of fluff sticking up all over her. She also still has matted fur (how does that even happen with a shave?!). Her ears are also unevenly cut. I was obviously unsatisfied and the groomer proceeded to tell me that she "started cutting and it just kept getting shorter and shorter".....well obviously....and then I was handed the bill like I was expected to pay for it. If you have a dog and care about their appearance, go elsewhere. Never again will we be returning to petco for a groom. read more

Me and my fiancé had an amazing experience tonight with sue! She is amazing! We have a pregnant cat! Our first! We have no idea what we are doing or what we need, we came and in and sue walked right up to us and asked if she could help! We told her what was going on and she was delighted to help and give all the info she could! We left with a bunch of things we needed and thanks to sue we got coupons for most of it! This company is revolting. I had purchased a product there previously that I liked, but every time I went back subsequently it was out of stock. When I came in again to see if it was back in stock yet, and it wasn't, an employee suggested I order it online using an iPad they provided me with in the store. During the process of filling out the online forms, I accidentally transposed two numbers in the zip code of my home address. When I got home and realized I had done this, I called the store and was told that was "it was out of their hands once the order left the store". So, I called customer service, who refused to fix the address or cancel the order. I'm now out 45 dollars for an honest mistake that they refuse to correct. They are awful. Avoid these people like the plague - they are completely unprofessional thieves. read more
