Me and my partner visited this shop in a hurry to purchase kitten flea medicine for our 9 week , at the time, kittens. Someone was willing to help, but this condescending young man said that the kittens need to be 10 weeks in order to get medicine. That is a false statement and you can look it up anywhere. It says 8 weeks and older. So, we wasted driving 40 minutes to the nearest pet shop. We will never be back and I tell everyone with pets to never shop here. Sadly we are not the only ones that have had this kind of experience and I'm sure it won't be the last. You work at Petco...you are not the savior or educator in anything animal related. Tried to buy a betta fish for my little broth for the 5 gallon fish tank he got for Christmas. My father in law wanted to get a betta fish for his 3 gallon desk top tank. They refused to sell my father in law the betta fish because they said a three gallon tank wasn't big enough for a betta fish. They litterly state it on their website that you only need a one gallon and sell tanks advertised for betta fish that are 1.4-3 gallons. I am leaving a review on the employees. My roommates and I went in to buy a hamster and Nicole helped us. We bought 2 dwarf hamsters and we specifically asked if 2 of this same breed could live together and she said yes. 2 weeks later one of the hamsters killed and ate the other one. Nicole did not tell us this. Later, we went back to buy fish instead. We bought 4 tetra fish and we asked Nicole again if we needed to prep the tank in any way and she only told us we had to place the bag of fish into the water to adjust them to the temperature. We did so and they did not last an hour. We are upset with her incompetence but were then pleased with Bri's service. She told us exactly how to prep and take care of our new beta and he is thriving! I purchased two clownfish yesterday at Bloomington, IN Petco during my lunch break. I could tell one of them wasn't doing too well in the bag on the way home, but figured I will take it back after work to return it and get a refund. I didn't want to keep it in the bag for a few hours and tried to drip acclimate it and put it in my tank hoping a bigger body of water might help. Well, it didn't and the poor guy was dead within an hour or so. I took it back to the store in the evening and was offered 20% off their last clownfish which was also on his last leg, sitting in the corner and not acting right at all. Needless to say, I passed that opportunity. The other clownfish is doing great in my tank btw, but I sure be driving to Indy for all my saltwater needs from now on. read more

I've been going to Petco regularly for several years since I've settled on Merrick dog food, which can't be found at Petsmart, which is closer to where I live. Petco seems to have slightly higher prices than other places, so if you can get the same brand somewhere else, you'll probably save elsewhere. The staff is always nice, the store is always very clean, too. Their choice of dog toys is top notch, but getting something on sale or clearance is your best bet. I like the rewards program, so getting an extra 5 bucks off every once in a while is nice. They have something for just about any type of pet, and the store is easy to navigate. I am a fan of the layout, having the fish in the middle and the other sections around the rest of the store. It's not huge and warehousey, and they use the space well. All that being said, if I could find Merrick somewhere else closer for around the same price, I'd probably go there instead. read more

Update : My now 10 month old puppy was sprayed in the face by a skunk yesterday morning! The wonderful groomers took him right away and gave him for baths! He's still a little smelly but I'm so grateful for the improvement! I took my 4 month old labradoodle puppy in for his first grooming appointment last week. His groomer was wonderful and seemed to really value making sure he had a good experience. She took her time and let him have breaks through the process. I go to the pet smart on the far side of town now. Their reptile husbandry is just really sad. The humidity levels for tropical snakes are way too low and this little ball python has stuck shed ): I know to people who don't know much about snakes or don't like them, this may not seem like a big deal but snakes with stuck shed are miserable and can sometimes need vet assistance to help them out. This is a direct result of low humidity. Snakes also have very sensitive respiratory systems as well and this low humidity is guaranteed to make them sick. If you're keeping reptiles but the husbandry is poor like this, how are you going to educate others about what proper husbandry looks like? Not to mention this is neglectful. The humidity is supposed to be 50-60% at minimum, and this is just asking to be sent home with a reptile with a respiratory infection and they're way more likely to bite from how uncomfortable and irritated they are. I have shopped at Petco for years. I've purchased supplies and pets for myself and my children. I often spend 50+ dollars a week there. 33 days ago I purchased a beautiful Ball Python Hatchling there. It was a white morph and cost $170.00. I've kept snakes for nearly 40 years now, my first pet was a Northern Ring-Necked Snake at age 10. I've had boas, pythons, corn snakes, rat snakes, garter, green, hognose, king and bull snakes. I've kept snakes as small as 5 inches and as large as 15 feet. The Ball Python I purchased was lethargic and wouldn't eat with any consistency. This is not unusual for Ball Pythons, so I decided to keep the conditions right (the snake was housed in a room with 3 other snakes and 4 tarantulas) and offer food every few days. Last night 3/6/18 I found the little snake expired under its hide. A Call to Petco and I was informed that I was 3 days past the "Guarantee" and I would receive nothing but their condolences. It seems a bit harsh considering the amount I paid for the animal and the amount I spend there weekly/monthly and yearly. The corporate headquarters gave me the same business. I will now be tearing up my Petco Card and spending my $$ elsewhere. I can see that a corporate "pet store" is surely not the best place to be spending my $$. I would recommend that others spend as little as possible there and definitely DO NOT BUY THEIR LIVE ANIMALS. You invite disappointment and heartache. It is obvious to me now that this animal had some kind of ailment - possibly IBD (inclusion body disease) which has symptoms similar to what the animal displayed. I only hope the virus wasn't transferred to my other Ball Pythons or my Boa Constrictor. Anyway, steer clear. They will not work with you in any fashion if the animal they sell you dies after (even a few days) the window they give you. I usually take my cat to another groomer in town for his nail trim, but I was having a hard time finding a time when a cat groomer was available there so I brought my cat to PetCo. The store itself looks older and a bit outdated, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The employees were friendly and the selection of items were alright. When I first entered the grooming area I noticed immediately that there was a lot of pet hair floating around on the floor. My cat already hates vet/groomer visits due to the animal smells so I was really nervous seeing this. The women behind the counter were very nice and excited to see my cat. I was really surprised when they didn't take him in the back to do his trim but instead just took him out of his carrier at the desk and started doing it right there. I had warned them that my cat absolutely hated nail trims but they didn't seem bothered by it. I warned them again when they didn't take him in the back but they insisted on doing it their way. Of course, it didn't go well and my cat ended up biting the woman holding him. I had never seen him so angry before. They ended up getting annoyed and putting him on a leash that attached to a bar and put something like a hamster ball over his head while they finished the job. He was so angry by that point that when they gave him back to me they couldn't get his leash off because he kept trying to bite everyone! I had to bring it back later. The woman told me to take him to the vet to get his nails trimmed with a sedative and told me to just go and didn't charge me. Needless to say, I wasn't happy either since I have taken my cat to their competitor many, many times and never had problems. Definitely would not recommend the grooming salon. read more

Had a terrible experience here on July 14th, 2020. I recently bought a new kitten (my first cat), and needed to purchase pet food and other supplies. I went in thinking that I would be able to find an associate to at least direct me to the right section and help with the choice of food, but I did not find one employee the entire time. When I went searching, most of them were in the back rooms, avoiding customers altogether and there were only two ladies at the register (one came by when she saw me waiting, so realistically there was only one person). I spent about 45 minutes in the store, alone and very confused. I hate that I even spent money here, but my cat needed food, and other stores were going to cost me about the same, anyway. After this experience, I will probably not be going back to this Petco. Terrible customer service--employees avoiding customers and not being around for help. Also--there were many other customers who had the same complaint as I. I had to have another customer help me chose good food for my cat. Ridiculous. I'd rather spend money somewhere else. Petco--if another customer has to help me find items for my cat (one that you do not have on your payroll), just run an electronic store or shut it down. You'd save everyone's time and energy. **Edit: Only gave it two stars because they had the food choice that I needed and the store was well-maintained. read more

I want to write an updated review. My previous review, focusing on the aquatics department, was quite harsh. I'm still often not happy with the health and quality of what I see in the fish tanks -- too many sick or dead fish. But I've come to see and learn that even independent, non-chain fish stores have some of these same problems. For better or worse, this is the place I need to go for most of my fishkeeping needs, and I'm in there frequently. I've purchased a number of fish and plants, and all have remained healthy and thriving expect for neons, which are always delicate/sensitive, and so I don't blame the store for this. I only buy things I've looked at very closely for health condition, and so far it's usually worked out. I also want to add that the aquatics staff I've dealt with and have come to know have ALWAYS been friendly, cheerful, and helpful. read more

i tried to take my dog in at 530PM, since the sign said the grooming office was open until 6. all i wanted was a simple round grind for my dog's paws, and since i was visiting from out of state, i was unable to go to my regular groomers. I arrived the next day with more time to spare before the office closed, and a woman (i do not know her name) accepted my dog all the while saying she was about to leave for the day. The grind job she did was TERRIBLE! it was scratchy, shoddy, and pointed on some nails. i can't believe i paid $15 for a grind that i could have done myself. I ended up spending another $20 on a personal wahl grinder in the store so i could just do the job myself. I would have been happy to wait for another associate to help me, but the woman who wanted to leave for the day took my dog. Of course, i do not expect a perfect nail grind, but i was not happy with the results from this store, and was upset that i had to pay for 2 different products (the grooming service and another nail grinder) for my pup to not be bothered by his long nails. :( read more

TERRIBLE EXPERIANCE BYPASS THIS STORE AT ALL COSTS: I wanted to make the point clear. I went in today after seeing the Bloomington animal shelter was is dire need of food for cats and dogs. I am always happy to help the shelter and have done so in the past. My intent was go to Petco let them know I was buying food for the shelter and would they be willing to maybe provide me with a little discount or sell me cases of cat and dog food that maybe are overstock. When I talked with the clerk he went into a back office with the "manager" I heard a little chatter as I was standing out the door and he brought me a coupon book from the front counter and told me she was pretty busy and might be able to talk with me in a little bit. I looked over the coupon book and saw wet dog food buy one can get one free. That was the best I could hope for so I proceeded to load in a cart 15 cases of dog food. There were no coupons for cat food and so I went to the register with my dog food. The young lady at the register was sweet I told her this was for the shelter and here is my buy one get one free coupon the gentleman had given me prior. She rang up the stuff $278 and then tried to ring in the coupon but it did not seem to work. She called upon another clerk and he suggested getting the manager. Finally she came out of her office I mentioned I had wanted to speak with her. Anyway I said it did not appear the coupon was working to which she told me it was only good for two cans not 15 cases. I again explained what I was doing, she asked for a tax exempt number. I again said I am just a guy trying to help the shelter I am not from the shelter, I am not looking for you to give me free food I am willing to spend $500 dollars or so with you today for food for the shelter I am just looking to get them as much food as possible. I am simply looking to see if there is any discounting or back stock items that I might buy for less. She said "no we don't do that"! I said what a shame I would be happy to spend a reasonable amount of money with you to help out the shelter. I again was met with "there is nothing I can do" Well PETCO I am suggesting to anybody who will read this to avoid your store in Bloomington Indiana if at all possible. How disgusting not being willing to show compassion to shelter animals or the good Samaritans trying to help them. I don't know what the PETCO name or brand is trying to stand for but compassion for animals is not part of it. I came home tonight to write this because I was too pissed off to go to another store. Tomorrow I will go to PetsMart ask them the same thing and see what happens. They do anything positive in any way to make my experience with them more pleasant than it was at PETCO today I will be spending $500-$1,000 with PetsMart to help our local shelter. I will also post an update tomorrow as to how PetsMart comes through. We have a dog and have rescued a cat since living in Bloomington. Petco has been great about having competitive sales on their Blue Buffalo Wilderness foods; they also reward shoppers with Petco memberships (adds up when you have multiple pets). Their main attraction, though, has been their fish department. My husband started his own planted aquarium and had been a regular at both Petco and Petsmart. However, when it came time to add plants and, later, fish, Petco blew their competition out of the water! We've had much healthier plants and fish from their supply and their staff is very knowledgeable about keeping diverse tank setups. Any time he's had questions about gear or fish/plant species, the fish department has been able to find an answer. Most of them are experienced aquarists themselves (just ask them about the enormous tanks that done of them keep... I'd never see my husband again!) and have been through just about any struggle/crisis you can imagine. We've become regulars at Petco and they're our go-to pet place in Bloomington... even though our cat was adopted from his animal shelter through Petsmart (but Petco does that, too). In the past three weeks, I've bought two betta fish from this Petco. While I'm aware some fish don't live very long, this second fish I recently bought (because the first one died after 2 weeks of owning him), died within 3 days. I bought a nice filter, a heater, water conditioner, and bacteria growth solution (recommended by a Petco employee) for my 5.5 gallon tank. I did everything I was told to do to keep this second fish alive, and it died within 3 days. I think there was something wrong with him from the start. I strongly suggest not buying betta fish from this Petco. My next betta fish purchase will be from elsewhere. read more

I have been here on a number of occasions and witnessed how little management cares about, not only their animals, but also their employees. I actually even made this Yelp to comment on what I have seen take place here. I have been in the store, speaking to employees when I have witnessed a large number of dead fish, malnourished looking reptiles, and a ferret cage that is covered in fecal matter in the back corner. When mentioning these things to management, I have seen them lash out at employees who had not been there when said incident has happened, and then walk away without helping to rectify the issue. Its almost as if management thinks they are too important to remember where they grew within the company. Citing one manager, I believe his name is Bill, I have witnessed him speaking very disrespectfully to cashiers on the front end while customers are around. I've seen this on such a regular basis that I have actually moved all of my shopping for my animals to a competetor across town. When considering shopping at this Petco, take into consideration the management that you are paying to treat these employees in such a way. Disgusting way to run a business. read more

We took our dog to Petco for a full grooming. We were told it would cost between $45-50. Great. We had told them at scheduling and drop off that he had a bloody spot from having blood drawn at the vet the day before. They assured us that it was fine, no big deal. Wonderful. We pick him up and are greeted with a $69 bill due to his "condition" and a lot of hostility. The groomer was reluctant to give us the dog back and expressed some feelings that we had kicked the dog. Those pictures are sooooo inaccurate, it doesn't look like that at all. There's a few workers there that actually care about the animals but the others are only there for the money. I'm a reptile keeper and when I see the reptiles there I feel so bad for them. They had an albino ball python out for sale for around $200-$300 (which is ridiculous for a baby). A worker got him out and held him, I got really upset and almost started crying. He was emaciated and looked so fragile, like I could break him if I held him like a normal ball python. I started looking close at him and noticed little black things under his scales and around the inside of his eye. He was covered in mites, they were so bad they got INTO HIS EYES. He was also in a tank with two pastel ball pythons so they had mites too. The worker said the snake had been out for 4 months. That proves they don't check their animals before putting them out so if you ever get one from there it could be really sick and you wouldn't know. I told the manager and she was really rude about it (probably because she didn't want the people around us to hear that they had a sick animal for sale). I checked on him a while ago and he had scale rot and they said he was fine because he was about to shed (which is stupid). They need to actually take care of their animals of they're going to sell the for a high price. The only reason I go there now is to get the snakes out so they can get used to being handled. read more

B-town has two big box stores when it comes to Pets. Petsmart on the west side or Petco on the east. I tend to prefer Petsmart, but will happily shop at Petco if I'm on that side of town or have a coupon or the pricing is just better. The staff at Petco is always nice. I really like their aquarium and fish choices over Petsmart, but since I don't actually have an aquarium that doesn't really do me a whole lot of good. Like Petsmart they have cats available for adoption from local animal shelters. My one beef was that we adopted one from them, and they charged us like 10 bucks for a box crate to carry it home. I mean I know you probably don't make any money off the adoption, but come on...it's a cardboard box. read more

I've shopped here a nice handful of times, and the last time I was in, I noticed a sign for a puppy play time. Having an 8 month old puppy, I signed up for it. I called ahead the day of to make sure I didn't need her rabies info (which I was told I didn't) and took her in. The experience was bad. My dog's been through a few obedience classes at a different place and has always been good with other dogs and people. The trainer had about five regulars at the playtime, and had them all take their leashes off at once, but kept my dog on the leash. This was horrible! The other dogs kept rushing up to my dog, which must've been really intimidating since she was still leashed. My dog kind of hid behind me. Now, she has never showed signs of aggression, yet the trainer who was overseeing the playtime said we couldn't join in afterall because my dog was acting "too shy" and the trainer wasn't sure if she would bite any of the other dogs. She then asked me where my rabies papers were and I told her I didn't have them because I had called to make sure I didn't need them and was told that I did not need to provide them. She was kind of rude and I didn't see the basis of rejecting us at all. If you're just shopping there, it's a great store. But I wouldn't really go back for the playtime or for training. Definitely bad service in that aspect and I don't believe the trainer who was overseeing our playtime was at all experienced in dog training or handling. read more
