I took our daughter's dog Kira here for a nail Trump and buffing. The grooming staff did a great job and they were very pleasant. I work during the day so getting her to a pet place is usually only possible on the weekends. I visited on a Saturday which was great. Also, the PetCo in Dundee doesn't take walk-in's for nail trimming/buffing - the Algonquin location does. This will be our new PetCo home store because a walk-in nail trim service means no more listening to dog nails click on the floor while I wait for an appointment. If I had to give a lower review I would! This pet store does not take care and maintain their habitats and has one of the worst employees there. Avoid the fat dude with a beard at all costs! First off, his uniform does not fit him so he greets you with his belly button out and all of his junk. Secondly, he will act like he knows everything and will pressure you to buy everything when some things aren't necessarily needs but more wants. He has a snarky and nasty attitude and will constantly follow you and bug you. I brought my son in to look at animals. When we went by one of the fish tanks, there were two groups of dead fish piled up on the bottom of the tank. I told a staff member who went to check it out and talk to someone, and she came back saying that's just how they come in and that someone will remove them from the tank. I wish I could give their grooming services 0 stars. Not only did they shave my dog down to the bone on his leg but then they shoved Quick-Stop in the wound. Quick-Stop is ONLY supposed to be used on dog's nails when the nail is cut too short and bleeds. It has bacteria in it from dogs' feet and nails. When they shaved my dog's skin off and saw how bad it was, they shoved Quick-stop in the wound to stop the bleeding and hide the severity of the wound. When I got my dog home and the Quick-stop came off, the blood flowed out of the large gash like a waterfall. The vet said that because of the bacteria in the wound, stitches could not be put in until an antibiotic cream sat on the wound overnight. So we did that and the next day my dog was put to sleep so he could get several stitches. This was a two day, $600 ordeal that was incredibly painful for my dog. Shoving Quick-stop into the wound to hide the severity of what they did was gruesome, horrific and outrageous!!! read more

Algonquin Location. Grooming. The hours advertised on the website is 9-6pm. I drove out there today, arriving at 4:15pm. I was a walk-in for nail trims for both my dogs. No one was there. They just decided to go home! Don't advertise walk-in's welcome then! I requestEd to speak with a manager because at this point I'm pissed. I adopted a dog with a shelter in this Petco store. While I was there a Petco employee started talking to me about a program with Petco called Vital care. It's a good program although I do not shop much with Petco. This employee said just try it and you can cancel at anytime. That is and was not true. It is setup for a year and if you cancel you have to wait out the year. So you still have to pay until the year is up. Now I have to be a Petco customer until my subscription is up. There's no other place for the best grooming for my dogs than this place. This was initially recommended by a friend, and everything is all fine when it comes to my pet, thanks to all of them. The staff are always friendly and accommodating. I go in here for the grooming of my pet. They always make a pet more beautiful than they were. There are a lot of things that are about how good things are. They are really good at their job, like they are so skilled at handling pets and all of that. They also really care for the pets, not only because it is their job, but I can also feel how good they are with the pets. Every pet that I have seen that has just gotten finished grooming here is so nice. I never heard anything negative from the experience of others while using the product. I am just really thankful to them because they always make everything perfect with regards to the pets. Stacy is our groomer for our dog Behr and she is amazing!!!! She listens to us and always goes above and beyond for Behr. Every time we arrive Behr gets so excited to see her. Stacy checks Behr completely before we leave to see if she has any Mats. Behr has been going to her for a year and it's the best decision ever! The first time I got scared because Behr cried but she had to get the hair taken out of her ears. I talked to the vet and that is how they do it too. I would highly recommend Stacy to groom your dog. Terrible for two reasons; 1. I've tried to make an appointment a few times but there's either no one in the salon because they've gone home early for the day, or they refused to make an appointment after 3 or 4 PM. The website says they're open until 8 PM. I work til 5, so obviously that can't work. The last time I tried to make an appointment whoever the woman was working in the salon was pretty rude and unaccommodating. She was very argumentative and said that there are only two people working there and there's no possible way they can work 9 AM until 8 PM every day. Here's a solution: both of you work half days six days a week one of you work 9 AM until 8 PM once a week so that you both have a day off and you also get half days. If you advertise certain hours you should be open during those hours. 2. Twice I got my dogs haircut there and they messed it up. One time they shaved so too short, he was almost bald all over even though I told them to keep it long. The second time I asked for a sanitary shave and they left the hair on his hindquarters long. That's not even close to a sanitary cut. I'm tired of being met with negative attitude, and poor service there I will be going elsewhere from now on. read more

Every time I come here I am greeted by pretty much every employee. After going to the Crystal Lake store and searching for someone to help me for 10 minutes before leaving, this was a welcome surprise! While looking at fish we had 3 people ask us if we needed help or had questions. The man that helped us was smiling and seemed to be enjoying his day, or at least faking it really well. I appreciate that. Smiles really are contagious! He taught us a bit about the fish we were getting and joked a bit. We just got bumped from a Sunday appointment with no concern to reschedule until Thursday. We also have had problems with the quality of cuts this March. They cut our Shih Tzu down to under a .25 inch. We were very upset and they never even called us to explain why. We suggest that you go to one of the professional groomers in the area. I really enjoy coming to this pet store. I usually come in for fish equipment. Today I purchased a 29 gallon tank for only $29 thanks to their bi annual $1/gallon sale!!! Mark, helped me pick out the tank and get the proper lighting needed as well. He was very helpful and knowledgeable. I was very grateful!! I would go to this petco over a petsmart any day! Today I came in to get my water tested by Stacy. She informed me what was wrong with my water quality and informed me how to correct it. I took my long haired dachshund for his first grooming experience. He only needed his nails trimmed and his ears shaped. I told her specifically how I wanted them cut. There were many things wrong with my experience. First they told me he would be done in 15-20 minutes. I returned to the store is 30 minutes and I still had to wait 15 minutes for him to be completed. When I got there they had just begun trimming him. His ears are completely butchered and have chunks taken out of them. They are not blended or shaped to his natural ear. His ears are uneven and the left looks completely different from the right ear. After I picked him up I had to take him back in to have the matte cut out of his ear. How could a groomer think a dog is finished and hand him back to me with a matte in his ear, he didn't even have mattes when I dropped him off. There were many pieces left long that I had to come home and cut. Essentially I might have well washed him and cut his ears with my inexperience and probably would have gotten a better outcome. Beyond just the hair cut, What is most upsetting is that he still has conditioner in his tail. It's sticky and stringy. Every dog owner knows how dangerous it is to leave shampoo on a dog, it can cause terrible skin reactions, especially on dachshunds. So now I just payed $40 to have him washed and I have to re-wash him which is also bad for his skin. His hair dried in all different directions and he looks mangy. Honestly the dog looked better before I dropped him off than he does now. I will never take him back there and I would never recommend them to anyone for more than just a basic nail clipping and teeth brush. read more

I asked to speak to the manager (I believe her name was Brittany) and was told that Rose is looking for employment elsewhere and is not very pleasant at the moment. I requested that she (Rose) not be the one grooming my puppy. The grooming services are a joke. My puppy has huge bald spots and her hair is very choppy looking. PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE FROGS FROM THIS STORE! THIS PETCO LOCATION IS SELLING DWARF FROGS THAT HAVE CHYTRID! My boyfriend and I recently set up and cycled a 7.5 gallon aquarium. We first adopted a sweet, docile betta fish. We decided he needed a tank mate so after researching, we adopted a little african dwarf frog from Petsmart in Crystal Lake. Tyrion was the perfect example of a healthy frog. Great size, very social, very energetic. Mulder (the betta) and Tyrion got along right off the bat. No issues whatsoever. A couple weeks passed and I came across a few articles stating that african dwarf frogs do better in pairs or groups. Because Mulder and Tyrion got along so greatly, I didn't think there'd be issues in getting another small frog. After all, our tank was already cycled and it's more than big enough to hold 3 small aquatic pets. We first checked several Petsmart locations. They were out of stock everywhere. Instead of waiting, however, we decided to check Petco. We made a HORRIBLE mistake. First off the bat, there was no one to help us in the aquatic section. I don't know if they were gone that day or what, but there seemed to be about 3 employees working the whole store. The manager (I think his name was Justin but I can't remember) was the one who helped us get Mavis, the frog we picked out. The first thing he said to us was "Which frog do you want? I'm assuming you want one of them that looks more alive, right?" and then chuckled. Weird, I thought. He started to push everything in the tank around, causing all the frogs to start panicking and I lost sight of the one I had originally wanted. In all the chaos, I noticed a dead frog that I hadn't originally noticed. This should have been a warning sign but because they were so little, and there were so many, I assumed it had just been the weakling of the group. The manager finally managed to grab one of the frogs and he scooped it into a bucket. He then proceeded to the sink area, where he tried to dump the frog and the water into a plastic bag for us to take home. Mavis wouldn't come out of the bucket so he literally turned on the cold tap water, and sprayed it on her to get her to come out. Anyone who has had aquatic pets knows how sensitive they are to the minerals in tap water, as well as rapid temperature changes. Not very smart of a pet store employee to even attempt. Why he couldn't just get more water out of the tank, I'll never know. He asked us if we had aquatic pets at home and I said yes, specifically mentioning the frog we already had. He said "cool." and that was it. Had I known more about the quarantine time needed (Petsmart said 4 days, which we did, but really we should have waited about 2 months, which I discovered too late), at least one of my frogs might still be alive. We took Mavis home and after a few days, added her to our tank. She looked healthy, seemed happy, and was acting completely normal. We test our water conditions every single day and they were exactly where they needed to be. After about a week, Mavis started to turn pale and shed her skin. Then she started floating at the top. She stopped eating and barely moved when we went to touch her. We isolated her from the big tank and after about a day, she died. We weren't really sure what she had died from at the time, but we decided to clean out all the gravel and ceramic figures and silk plants from the tank anyways and we did a 50% water change. Mavis died on May 28th. Tyrion and Mulder still seemed fine though. Until a couple days ago, when Tyrion started to grow pale and shed his skin. Then he stopped eating and started floating too. At this point, I could see the white fuzzy spots on his body and put together all his symptoms and I realized he had chytrid and he had gotten it from Mavis. We immediately started doing diluted lamisil baths (if you look online, there's tons of info from people saying that the active ingredient in lamisil kills the chytrid fungus in frogs and we were willing to try anything) and moved him to a new hospital tank. He seemed to be getting better and the baths were helping.. And then last night he died. Alone, in an empty tank without his betta friend or anyone around to make him feel comforted. Tyrion was completely fine until we got Mavis. Mavis came from a tank with a dead frog. Mulder is still fine, and the water conditions are still the same. Petco sells frogs with chytrid so PLEASE do not adopt frogs from there. If you do, quarantine them for at least 2 months which is how long it can take for signs of chytrid to show. I'm not sure why petco isn't warning people of this terrible disease. Clearly Petco has a lot of frogs die (these frogs are supposed to live 10-15 years!!!) if the manager had to make a joke about choosing one that actually looked alive. I will never shop here again. I loved Mavis but had we not gotten her, Tyrion would still be with us. Shame on you, Petco, for selling diseased animals. I'm disgusted. read more

Wasabi the chameleon had been brought to Petco to be treated in December and January at this Petco location. She was originally brought into Petco to be treated for an eye infection, and we were able to pick her up a few days later. Her eye infection had not been treated and Wasabi had gotten thermal burns at home. She was brought in to be seen by her regular vet. Wasabi was sent home with cream and eye drops. Scott then brought her back to Petco to be treated for her eyes again since they were not getting better and the burns were being cared for at home. We both had visited her because over the course of two weeks we had not heard anything about her status. Within those two weeks Scott had called first and I a second time a few days later to receive any update on Wasabi. We were told the same thing both times that she was doing fine and being treated. The man that I had talked to on our second phone call did not seem educated on the well-being of Wasabi. He repeated that she was okay and the "white spots" were being treated, but said nothing about the infection of her eye. He also said that she had not been seen by a vet yet. During our visit we were told that no one was informed that Scott or myself had called looking for updates on Wasabi, they thought that we had forgotten about her. The employees seemed rude during our visit. We left all of our information with phone numbers that day and had not heard anything until I called Petco in February for another update on Wasabi. I asked why we have not heard anything on her when we were told we would receive an update. The employee was rude with me and stated that they "simply do not have the time to call us with updates." He also rudely said "she belongs to us now" and gave me no explanation as to what exactly that meant until I got in contact with Scott who said he was given a gift card with the amount of what he paid for for Wasabi to "buy her back". We are not happy with our experience with the care of Wasabi at Petco, the mixed information we have been getting, the lack of teamwork and communication between the staff. On March 1, I received a call from the manager who said that the vet has released Wasabi and she was ready to go home after two months. Upon picking up Wasabi we noticed that the left side of her tail was black. Her previous thermal scars were almost done healing, her eye infection had passed as well but her tail was all black! This is not how we brought her in. What really infuriated us was that the employee who released her back to us did not have an answer as to what had happened or when it had happened! How did the employees who had been taking care of her for two months have no explanation. I called Petco the next day and spoke to the manager. I asked again what had happened and when it had happened and he had no answer for me either. I called the vet who was caring for her hoping to get some answers. I asked him what had happened to her tail and why it was all black. To my surprise he did not know it was black. He told me that Wasabi seemed bright, alert and responsive during his last visit that he did not take her out of her cage, so he was not able to see the tail. He advised me to bring her back into Petco to be treated, again. I told him no, we do not want Wasabi gone for another two months. The next day I received another call from the manager at Petco saying I was able to bring Wasabi to her regular vet. I made the appointment and brought Wasabi in. Her tail ended up being one huge thermal burn. Which means during her stay with Petco Wasabi ended up receiving another burn on her tail. She was not being treated for it while at Petco. I have come to the conclusion that Petco cannot properly care for our beloved animals. Their staff is not as educated as they come off to be, and their customer communication skills are very poor. We feel so awful that our Wasabi had to go through all of this, how shameful for you all to not be able to give any explanation whatsoever about her burn that she received while being "treated" at your facility. read more

I am an anonymous former loss prevention officer and employee. Let me tell you that the problem is not with the store, the problem is with the customers. I have witnessed customers calling the cashiers slurs such as, "bitch" "worthless" "spic" etc. just because they didn't use their obviously fake or expired coupon. Also, do not blame the employees for not picking up dog poop for a stranger whom obviously ignored the fact that their dog defecated in the store and walked away assuming that a stranger would pick up after their Pooch. That is not how it works. And in reference to the "coffee by crickets", A) customers should never follow employees to the cricket counter. So it is not your space to judge in the first place, B) it's coffee, not vodka. Get over it. If it was a cubicle job and they had coffee on their desk would you complain? All in all the customers are absolutely horrendous. Not okay to treat any employee that way let alone any person that way. Shame on you.
