I will never go back. I took my child there because I heard it was really cool. We were checking out the hamster exhibit and realized one of the females had babies and one of them looked deceased so we notified a worker. She was unsure what to do and I asked her to please get someone in charge. She did.... and guess what we heard... we already have to many of those kind so just feed them to one of the animals....REALLY!!! My 8 year old was devastated!!! You guys should be ashamed to purposely kill a living and breathing animal. You obviously lost site of why you work at a pet store, your facility should be investigated!! read more

I would give this place zero stars if I could. They keep the animals in terrible conditions. Example #1: The puppies are kept on wire - no beds, TINY cages, no toys. They are dirty too. Example #2: The mice and rat cages are packed with animals. 30+ animals in a 10 gallon cage -even research animals have better environments. I saw at least one with injuries. Example #3: The ferrets (two of them) are in a SMALL cage with no toys. Example #4: The little parakeets are packed ---PACKED in a tiny cage with NO toys or other entertainment. At least a few are so stressed they are feather picking. ETA: I spoke to the local CSO and this location meets the current city ordinances. However, even research animals are required to have enriched environments (toys/places to burrow for rodents/uncrowned conditions). I think a pet store should aim to do better. Pet Stop -do better -you literally have toys for sale in your shop. Certainly, you can put a few in the animal cages. Your animals are stressed. It may not be 'legally' required, but it's the right thing to do. read more

A horrible establishment! Cruel to their animals. A salesman picked the chinchilla we were buying up by the tip of his tail which is a big no-no! Painful for them and traumatizing to an animal we were about to purchase. And he also changed the price and added $50 at the register. He wouldn't change it and at that point my husband and I felt like we were rescuing the poor creature. We paid the bigger price just to get out of there! Horrible place. Do not recommend. The dogs looked so pathetic and I have a good feeling they are from a puppy mill. read more

In the middle of the suburbs where corporate strip malls and monotony prevail, it's a breath of fresh air to see that there are, still, good family-owned businesses that genuinely appreciate you as a customer, learn your name, and greet you with a genuineness that you can only find when the owner of store is on the floor himself. I've been going to Pet Stop to take care of my aquarium for three years. They buy their fish from local fisheries first, then, if they have to, go to corporate distributors. I've always been given good advice, told what I needed and didn't, and gotten help whenever I ran in to trouble. I shopped pet stores in KC looking for something beyond Pet Smart. I can tell you that, at least South of the river, there is no better place to go. Will you pay more? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely. read more

One of my favorite things to look at and sometimes purchase at a pet store are finches. A few years ago Pet Stop had more types than any other store I've been to, then cut back on the number a while back. Today I was disappointed to discover that they have decrease the number even more so the point where there are only a few in a cage with other birds. read more

Owner operated and they are there every day! This isn't a corporate pet factory, these guys buy from KC locals and always have great prices. I would give 0 stars if I could. Bought a Malti Poo from here last October. He is like my baby I love him so damn much. But before he turned 1 he started having seizures. Turns out he has a shunt in his liver and can't have really any proteins. He is on dog food that costs $70. He has been in out of the vet causing us large vet bills. It's been racking up on my credit card because I can't afford it. The worst part is having to watch him go through the seizures. Even with his medicine that I have give 3 times a day and his diet he still continuesly have the seizures. And they have been getting worse. He can have surgery the vet said but it's not a guaranteed fix and it also costs thousands of dollars . They have a life insurance here for the puppy you buy but only if they die. I don't want to have to think about that. I've talked to them and they won't cover the medical bills or do anything at all. These are puppy mill puppies this is what you'll get when you buy from there. read more

Over the years I have gotten several small animals from Pet Stop--two gerbils for my classroom, a guinea pig to keep my other guinea pig company, and most recently a pair of Society Finches. The staff has almost always been friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, though in the past I have had a staff member or two not really know what they are doing--those staff members are rarely there long, though, so I feel generally comfortable. The birds and small animals are all from local breeders, and so they can tell you about where they came from and how old they are. We had gotten a pair of finches from a big chain store, and one of them died after about a month--we suspect of old age. The new ones the Pet Stop could guarantee were juveniles, as they knew the breeders. I have also bought supplies from them; they aren't the cheapest, but they are good. read more

Once again fabulous! My son saved up money to buy a frog. When we got there the frog he wanted was already gone ... Andi helped us find somethong in his price range, and perfect. My son even named the cane/marine toad Andi lol. We were guided threw the store to make sure we had everything we needed before we left. Pet Stop has an adventurous store experience and a wonderful selection of animals and pet products! Among their animals, my family and I have bought a bearded dragon (including live crickets and terrarium accessories), a ball python (including live mice and terrarium accessories), and two finches (including bird cage with accessories and seed). We also regularly purchase their pet care products for our rabbit and two dogs. The owner and her team are tremendously helpful with Q&A and coaching us about pet care and products as well! Because the store is so adventurous, we visit the store weekly just to see and interact with newly-arrived animals (especially, the rabbits, dogs, and reptiles). All I've mentioned is why we trust and appreciate Pet Stop, give them a "5-Star" rating, and are happy with refer their business to our friends and family :-) read more

Abusive, filthy place. Monkey in a small cage. The floor space afforded to that animal is less than I give my guinea pigs. Dogs are from puppy mills and are sad and lonely. I love rodents, so I immediately went for the rats. All of their mice/rats are meant to be feeders, expected of a place like this. As such, they give these animals NO quality of life. The jumbo rat there was literally panting, trying to breathe, and it was obvious he had a bad respiratory infection. His water looked dirty. It was also covered in flea scabs that were bleeding in spots. I held him briefly and when I looked at my shirt I was COVERED in fleas. I'm sure all the animals will eventually get them. When I brought up my concerns to an employee, she very rudely told me that it was a feeder and asked me if I was going to have a steak dinner that night (snakes gotta eat!). Very condescending, treated me like I was stupid. She just walked away from me. While I understand the concept of feeder rats, what I don't understand is the need to treat them like sewer rats. Horrible abuse of their animals. All of their animals are in tiny enclosures and are very dirty and uncared for -- notably their ferrets. Someone should call PETA. read more

I have seen on multiple occasions people mishandling the animals, disturbing the monkey with loud noises and poking, while dogs in cramped quarters bark incessantly. Unfortunately, I also see the employees standing around, rather than supervising the small children or showing them how to best care for an animal. I feel depressed every time I go there. My vet had recommended the place to me because it carries something I can't find elsewhere but I will need to let her know that apparently, this store hasn't learned from these poor ratings and negative feedback. read more

This place is horrible, me and my children were in there today to look for a dog and when we walked in no one said anything to us at all. Not once did they come and ask if we needed anything or did we want to look at a dog. But as soon as other customers walked in the door all you heard was hi, how may we help you. I can't believe these people are still open. On my 10 min trip in this is what I found: 1) The monkey in the middle is being poked at by adults and children alike the entire time I was there with no where for that poor thing to hide. 2) The puppies were jammed 2-3 in a single kennel (when there was plenty of open kennels) with barely anything for them to play with. 3) I counted FIVE birds that had no tail feathers or back feathers from being picked on by other birds. This is not something that happens over night. It's unacceptable. 4) Most all of the fish tanks were filled with dirty water and/or dead fish that have been there for awhile. 5) Let me say the reptile "exhibit" was the worst. The anole tank had TWO dead lizards in it with large crickets. These poor lizards are smaller than the crickets and there was about 3 dozen in there. Feces was literally everywhere with the ground covered with dead crickets. 6) Almost every snake was in an enclosure with a USED dog bowl...and that's about it. 7) The last thing I saw before I left straight from there to write this review was a poor medium sized lizard that was literally being eaten alive by the copious amount of large crickets in its cage. These crickets were all over the floor and walls and on the lizard. There was one lizard and an easy 20-30 large crickets. Repulsive. If you say you love animals or reptiles in any way you should stay far away from this place. One star to this place is giving too much credit. read more

love this place! animal cages always clean, friendly staff (basically always the same few people!). We have purchased pets from them for over 15 years. the staff is always knowledgable and very helpful. some of the products may be a little pricier than a big box store, but its worth it to support small business. they still have the best prices (AND SELECTION) on the actual animals. I love taking my kids in to see the animals. we always have a great time and always find something nice for our pets. read more

When I first walked in and saw the caged monkey and the terrible conditions the puppies were living in, I was fuming. Although this company is family owned, they are terrible people. They have a caged monkey living in the center of the store who screams and is very violent. Just sad to see an animal be caged in there for at least ten years (I used to come here a lot as a child before realizing how sad and terrible it truly is). Then, there's the puppies. These poor babies are kept in a metal cage with no blankies. When I asked the staff if I can hold or play with one, there is almost always some bullshit excuse as to why I can't and they are just plain rude to you for asking. You would think the employees would love if someone wanted to give the puppies some pleasure and happiness. I asked if I could hold one and they said "we just fed the puppies so no." Complete bullshit. They only let you hold them if they think you will buy one. Only care about the money. Literally just some of the rudest staff I've ever be in contact with who don't even care about animals so I'm pretty confused why they decided to own a pet store... read more

I just moved into the area and visited this store for the first time. Walking in I noticed right away the monkey in the cage. I had a bad feeling about this place afterwards. A monkey should not be kept in these living conditions with no socialization let alone a pet store in general. I walked around some more and then noticed puppies, each alone in unfit cages. Each cage has only wire flooring with no bedding/soft area for the puppies to lay down. I saw some tried so hard to lay on their only toy for that was the only soft thing available in the cage. I asked the employee if they take them out of the cage and one said no. It saddens me that these animals are not socialized nor have any playtime at this young of age. The asking price is very high per pet making me think that these puppies come from a puppy mill environment. After witnessing these standards, I left this store right away. I will not be giving any of my money this this terrible pet store. I would not recommend this store to anyone and I am shocked to see the poor reviews of this place years ago and they are still in business. DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

Pet Stop is one of the few places I can take the kids I baby sit for a fun, free entertainment session. The staff there is extremely knowledgeable about animals and are always willing to answer questions. The kids can hold the animals (with my help), and there is even monkey to interact with! Frankie the monkey loves to chase the kids around and play with them. All the animals in the store are very well taken care of and the bearded dragon I bought there two years ago is HUGE.
