I gave a 5 star review about a year ago, but after a scary incident that occurred this week, I feel the need to write another: I just adopted a 93 lb. Weimaraner-pit (Roofus), and took him to Pet Food Express for a collar. As soon as he got out of the car, he wriggled out of his harness, and was running in the parking lot, right next to busy traffic on Hawthorne blvd! I was scared to death, I thought I was going to see my newly rescued boy hit by a car, right before my eyes. When I was finally able to grab Roofus, I raced him into the store, completely freaked out, shaking like a leaf. Pam immediately took over; she was perfectly calm, and quickly got a basic leash around my boy's neck before he could get dart through the store- or worse- pop out the door and back into traffic. Pam adjusted his harness, Jennifer fitted a new collar on Roofus, and then Pam walked me through the dog tag machine. Employees at Pet Food Express don't just point you to a product, they get involved. They saw my predicament, and they jumped in and started problem solving. I went from nearly-hysterical-new-dog-mom to confident dog mom by the time we walked out. I don't know what would have happened if these kind women hadn't stepped in. There's a very good chance that Roofus would have escaped again. I will be forever grateful for their willingness to jump to my aid without a second thought. They were truly heroes that day! read more

The folks that work here are fantastic! They are super friendly, proactive, and helpful! One day, we had problems escorting our dog to the bathing area & Pam graciously helped us entice him to the tub area. Another day while bathing him, Sal proactively helped us with two separate issues without us even having to ask. He made the bathing process so much easier and efficient. Today I went into the store looking for dog food. I checked the entire dog food section on one side of the store and could not find it. Therefore, I asked a store employee that goes by the name of Paola where it's located. She said the back I went to the back it was not there Then I asked her again and she said sorry. August 30th, 2023 Today I had a moment of pure fear. My dog is my everything and I was in need of help. This morning my service dog was exposed to chemical floor cleaner at a local Starbucks 5min away. Unknowingly, I had her laying at my feet on the tile of Starbucks. Mack's trained to stay no matter what. Her training had her stay in place even though she was wet from the liquid coming from under the loose tiles. It was floor chemical cleaner that was under multiple loose tiles and the pressure of my dog laying on these tiles was making the liquid bubble up from around the tile. My dog Mack was soaked by the chemicals along with the sewage spill liquid that the store had apparently experienced the night before under her stomach, her knees, her feet, chest, stomach, and her girly area. I had visited two days prior to Pet Food Express in Rancho Palos Verdes and experienced your wonderful staff and the Primal Reps. While there, I was able to use yourself wash area which is where I first met Ruby. So, my only thought today was that your facility was closer to the Starbucks at the mall, than my own home. I waved at Steph who had passed by your front doors and got her attention and let her know of the situation. She, within minutes was able to get a hold of the district manager to allow me in 37 minutes before you're opening time. Ruby and Steph then assisted in making sure I had everything I needed in order to wash my service dog Mack, as quickly as possible. They allowed myself and my best friend into your establishment. Both employees showed great concern for my dog and myself. They both checked in on me and Mack to make sure I had clean dry towels, made sure the water was warm, that I had an apron, and that we were doing okay throughout the bath while also speaking to my friend as she was on the phone with poison control. I am so grateful to your staff at this particular location and for the district manager giving permission to allow the staff to allow us access to the self-wash stations when they could have easily asked us to wait the almost 40min until you opened at 10am. I am writing this letter asking if you could PLEASE recognize these two individuals for their kindness and concern. Huge fan! I've been here twice now and both visits were completely positive. Now, let me tell you about Pam. Pam gets every gold star available. I just bought the same food my dog already loves but in a more convenient form and for a lower price simply because I went from pantry stable to freezer-based. Pam asked me a couple of questions at check-out about what I add to the food; then asked if I had freezer space. First time visit to Pet Food Express, and I was impressed!. The staff is super helpful, the food selection is great, and the store is super clean. I was running very low on my dog's food, and I found out (the hard way) that it was discontinued. I went to see if Pet food express to see if they had anything comparable. One of the workers went above and beyond to help me find a similar formula and gave me tips on how to make the transition to the new food easier on them. My dogs are loving their new food, and they have had no problems with it. The food is better quality and it was the similar priced as the one from the big name pet store. My dog and I love this place! Our routine once a week is to come here after a nice, long dog park, hike, or other outdoor activity for him to get a bath. I appreciate being able to go somewhere that is set up for us to walk in and get a good bath in without all the fuss and muss of getting it done at home. All of the basics are included (I bring my own bath brush and conditioner). I'm lucky that my dog tolerates his weekly bathing ritual. Not a fan of the dog washing area. I have two Goldens and they need soap and conditioner. There was not much soap that came out of the sprayer and absolutely no conditioner! Then when I was done there was no brush to brush out Moose and get the tangles out. However the store is very nice and the ladies working there are extremely friendly. read more

Love this place! Started coming here about 4 months ago when we got our now 6 month old frenchie. The first time coming in was awesome. EVERY single employee I've encountered has been welcoming and willing to help with any questions I had. Since getting our frenchie, I've gone in several time lately for toys, food, supplies, etc. and have gotten familiar with a few of their staff members. In the beginning. I had TONS of questions and frenchies can be sensitive to many foods. They eventually helped me in finding a brand called Nulo. Both our dogs have now been on this brand and enjoy it!!! Can't say this for any other major brand of food we've had in the past. I went in today 3/26 and ran into (MJ)? Sorry if I forgot your name! And the other lady who I've been helped by before right when they opened. Anyway, they've always been Super friendly and are becoming familiar with our frenchie. He loves running into them as they always provide him with a little treat. They don't have to do that but they do, and our little Hilo loves it and is associating Petfood Express and their team members as a positive experience. Today's bath didn't go so well. Station #4 had really hot water for my dog's bath. Poor girl was overheating and I asked them to check the temperature. One girl said, "do you want cold water instead." No. Another employee came by to check the temperature went to the back and came back to say it was lowered by 5 degrees. Too bad it was at the end of the bath. Sometimes it's too cold, but today was another story. $18 for uncontrollable water temp and an uncomfortable experience for my already water-hating pup. read more

Just found our new spot! My friend told me about their "Buy 3, Get 1 Free" deal so I had to check it out. He was right! I went in to buy 3 large bags of dog food but they only had those three so they discounted them down so that it would be equivalent to a feee bag. All of the team members there are all so friendly as well. Natalie (super sweet) took care of us from the moment we walked in until we left. They also have "do it yourself baths" for your pets for only $18 and you can apply the same deal to those which really brings down the washes to $12. Will definitely be coming back often. read more

I'm a devoted customer of Pet Food Express due to great products & great service. Plus, this location is very convenient for me. And parking is easy in their front & side lots. Recently the store has been completely rearranged, though, and I can't find anything. Yesterday I learned why: they had to make room for freezers in which to hold JustFoodForDogs (and cats) products. Yep, PFE will now be selling JFFD, which may not be available at all locations...yet. They're in the process of getting things set up, so call first. PFE & JFFD = a match made in heaven! No more driving to Manhattan Beach for JFFD, yay. My visit to PFE yesterday was to pick up CBD (cannabidiol) for my ailing cat, who has taken to howling in the middle of the night, keeping momma awake. I think his sub q treatments (for kidney disease) are stressing him out. I've tried pheromone spray & Rescue Remedy, both available at PFE, and they help.....but not enough. So, people in SF (of course) suggested I try CBD. It works for their hyperkinetic dog. Just put on some reggae music, they said, along with a couple drops of the magic hemp oil.....hey at this point I'll try anything. I'm tired. PFE has CBD in oil & treat forms. I got the oil, low dose for a 12 lb. cat, 35 bucks. Tried it last night & the cat threw up. It may have been the damn reggae, however (kidding), so I'll give it another shot tonight. It is so rare to find people who go beyond expectations and the definitions of service but that's what you have here! They are also friendly and accommodating all the years I've been coming, but the way-beyond any call of duty happened the other evening, 47 minutes after closing! Natalie was cleaning up and I desperately he was knocking on the door and she saw it and opened it for me. Our golden retriever had been severely sprayed by a skunk and I needed help. The registers were closed, but she gave me her best advice with the skunk shampoo without a purchase, trusting I'd come back the next morning and pay. That is maybe one in a 1000 to find somebody who would do that when they're probably trying to get home after a long day and they have every right to point to the closed hours and wave, but Natalie did not do that. I took my anxious/fearful doodle dog for a self service wash yesterday. I was dreading it. He doesn't like water and hates bath time. I was having a very hard time but employees Tori and Mikaeyla went above and beyond helping coax my guy in the bath. They even got in the tub trying to make him more comfortable. They had such positive and patient attitudes it calmed him down and me. We finally got him relaxed enough to turn on the water and eventually washed. These girls are pros. I wish I would have found PFE sooner. After many years of refining what food was best for my precious pup, I kept purchasing it at another place that was good/helpful, but after visiting PFE I discovered the other place was much more expensive. The buy 3 get one free deal at PFE on top of an already lower price for the quality food I wanted to buy, well I was sold!! Unfortunately my beloved pup passed away (at nearly 15, but it's never enough time!!!!). They were very gracious in the returns they allowed me to make that other stores would not have done after 30 days - I got no grief at all. Which is good because I would have burst into tears. The worker I found most helpful and friendly was Brit, she is truly great! I think I did encounter the 'older blonde manager type' another reviewer mentioned...once. And I agree she was not friendly...they had messed up my discount and had to re-ring my order, which was so not MY fault, and she was clearly annoyed - not cool. It was nearly $20 difference to my bill, so I was right to speak up and I was super nice about it, but she (manager type) was not. Overall, though -- had my sweet baby puppy girl not left this world, I would still be buying her food and treats at PFE. I found PFE because of attending Pugtacular Spooktacular in Torrance. PFE had given free cookie samples that my girl went crazy for, and we had a coupon so I checked it out. They were the cookies you buy by the pound and they were hearts that said things like 'I love you' etc. - try them! Well, have your doggie try them. My baby loved them, and now I am giving them to her doggie friends until they are all gone... They are not only beyond kind, but also incredibly knowledgeable, thoughtful and patient with first time puppy owners. Having visited PFE in Belmont and Napa for items that we have forgotten on road trips, I can say that they are heads and tails above other pet store chains with the sincere attention and care of staff. Having a PFE so close to home is fantastic, especially for dog bathing, the annual birthday cookie, and treats. Our current canine companion is now middle age and even seemed depressed (maybe too much together time with the family?!). He seemed to have lost his appetite, too, so we made an appointment for the vet. However, we needed to do something before the visit so I went to PFE for help. Staff members listened to me explain what was going on, made recommendations for food, and confirmed that a joint supplement that I had chosen was good. Based upon Tiffany's recommendation, I chose a raw frozen food to supplement the existing kibble and can now say that our dog is back to eating everything in his bowl.
