After stopping at a nearby branch and discovering that the dog food we were looking for was sold out, they called this location to confirm it was in stock and asked them to hold it for us. We arrived 30 minutes later, and what we wanted was already on hold and waiting for us! We also asked for a couple of other items, and the lady helping us was extremely friendly and helpful. She assisted us in finding everything and ensured all the items were in order as we wanted. We left less than twenty minutes later with everything we needed to keep our little furry friend happy. Lots of easy parking, a doggie spot in front with poo bags, disposal container, nice plants, and plenty of room for marking and sniffing. Inside, the staff is friendly and helpful, the aisles are wide, there are shopping carts (and baskets) available, and the service is purrfect. Great selection! From top end raw, freeze dried, organic, and more, to budget-friendly foods, there are nutritious alternatives for every furry member of your family. And, treats! So many yummy treats. Regarding returns I went to return a brand new item I purchased. I did not have the receipt but knew that they would accept my return. Actually I wanted to do a simple exchange. When I got to the register the woman said that they don't accept returns. I was shocked. She was very mean spirited. Almost cocky. I was so angry I left. I have been shopping there for 17 years! I have been taking my dog to this location for baths on a regular basis. They always give us a little extra time because I bring her in early, before there are a lot of other dogs there, so it takes awhile for the water to warm up. I brought her in recently for vaccinations, and the company they contract with were kind enough to walk out to my car and vaccinate my dog. At that time I also tried out steps and a dog ramp to get her in and out of my vehicle. Three different employees walked out to my vehicle and tried to help me find the right fit, unfortunately nothing worked, so I just have to keep picking her up and putting her in the car. read more

The folks in here were great when we shopped here today after adopting two new 11-week old kittens! They hooked us up with toys and typical kitten stuff. Navigating into the parking lot is probably going to be your only challenge when shopping here. Folks seem to lose all common sense when driving here so please use caution, especially if you're a pedestrian. Other than that, it's a good store with helpful folks ready to assist you if you're looking for something for cats or dogs. Besides food, treats, bedding, pet cleaning items, training tools, and furniture for your pets, it also has a large room to wash and dry your dogs that's kept very clean. They have very limited pet supplies for other types of animals like fish, reptiles, or small rodents (just the basics really). They don't adopt animals out of the store like say Petco at Vintage Oaks. Instead, they have partnered up with Marin's Humane Society and offer weekend adoptions in front of their store. Usually they have cute dogs of all ages set up to view and play with. It's quite fun to watch. I haven't seen cats at these events, but that doesn't mean there isn't. I'd call and ask. They're very accommodating and seek out the best answer for your inquiries. read more

The only negative thing I can say about Pet Food Express is that they're badly named. It's not just about pet food here. The staff is extremely knowledgeable (which is rather amazing since most of them are pretty young) and can help hook you up with not only the right kind of pet food but trainers, groomers, walkers and sitters. You can bring your dogs (in our case, 2) and for 15$ you can use their facilities to wash and dry them. They provide towels, soap (a choice of 3) and a giant dog washing area replete with leash hooks, warm water and blow dryers. No scratched tubs, no dog hair all over your bathroom and no lingering wet dog odor either. They have a "buy 3 get one free" policy that extends to most items and makes it worth it to take a pass on Costco items (usually). All the food they sell is high quality and we definitely noticed a difference (waste reduction) for our dogs. Oh, and they also helped us find a better food for our cat. Barf-boy is barfing much less often these days. read more

This is by far the best Pet Food Express in the area... I come here often to get my doggie items. They carry a wide variety of foods, but not the gross grocery store brands, the healthy kind. The staff at this location is ALWAYS friendly and helpful, even on their busiest days. I pass another PFE location in Terra Linda just to go to this location, its worth the drive from San Rafael. Prices are definitely competitive and they will price match Petco, and PetSmart etc. I also appreciate that they don't sell animals here, they promote adoption, and anyone that knows me, knows that I strongly agree with that. read more

Hamilton PFE is amazing. On a personal level, they are very helpful, kind, and considerate. They always are excited for whom ever walks in the door, human or dog. They always give our dogs attention and care, even if they are bully breeds. They will walk around helping pick out the right products or suggesting ones they are familiar with, all while not over selling or being pushy. They always offer to help carry out items too. From a rescue stand point, there couldn't be more caring people. They give all the can give not only on our adoption days, but during the week when I walk in with foster pups and need help. A friend recommended I watch a documentary titled PET FOOLED. WOW! What an eye opener. And so the journey began. One day, while in the city, we decided to visit the Market Street location. We were greeted and "educated" by the Darryl, new store manager. Darryl listened to our story and then took us on a complete tour of the cat portion of his store. For a new PFE manager, his knowledge and enthusiasm was rather impressive, and the idea that every choice we made together was backed by a return policy equal to no other made our encounter well worth the time spent. Unfortunately, the Stella&Chewy food was not liked by our cats. Darryl instructed me to visit the Northgate location, because of convenience, and they would make good on a replacement. I was just as impressed by the associates at the Northgate store as I was with Darryl. I entered the store knowing I wanted Kiwi Kitchen brand products. The young lady I met with took all the time required to be sure I was making the right choices and had all the additional products necessary to make a smooth transition of food. Best part of all...my cats have never shown such determination to actually finish every last drop in their bowls. When I first moved to Novato, I went to the other Pet Food Express for a couple of years. It was fine, but nothing special. Once we moved across town last year, we started coming to the one in Hamilton and have been SO impressed with the service. When we adopted our new rescue pup this year after losing our old dog last fall, we started taking her in here very regularly for social interaction. I got there 15 minutes after they closed, the door was locked but I could see a employee inside washing the floor of the pet washing room. I knocked on the door getting his attention. He walked up to the door and said the stores closed. I told him all I wanted was a box of live crickets and added that I know they cost approx $2.50 and that I'd get him $5 since their registers were counted and closed. He said "Ill get my manager". After manager arived I repeated my request but said 2 boxes for $10. He came back with 2 boxes and told me that I could have the crickets. I was suprised and attempted to insist on taking the $10. He said he couldn't so ask "lets say ou found $10 on the ground that I accidentally dropped?" He smiled shaking he's head. Long sort short i got the 2 boxes for free when the stor was closed. I babysat a dog at work last night, and made the mistake of letting her have the run of the office. The first thing she did was go into my boss's office, where he was working, and peed A LOT on his rug. He often brings his dog to work, so my dog must've smelled his. My boss flipped out, in his polite, restrained way, God, talk about mortifying. So this morning i went into this Pet Food Express, looking for the stuff you spray into carpet so that more dogs don't pee where the first dog peed. Those 2 ladies that were working there - I was SO blown away by how kind and helpful beyond helpful they were! They laughed with me at my story of woe, went over the merits of all the types of spray (didn't try to sell me the most expensive one), coached me in detail on how to clean it up, spent a ton of time with me, and even GAVE me a beautiful white towel from their stash, to put over it. I walked out of there beaming at how amazingly cool they were. Every time i go in there, the people are great. But these two ladies really hit it out of the ballpark. The people in this store are wonderful. We were out of dog food last weekend, and my husband ran to the store EIGHT minutes AFTER it closed. When he approached the door, the employee told him that the registers were closed and asked him what he needed. When my husband said he needed dog food, the employee gave him two cans and told him to pay for them the next day. That is especially remarkable to me because I am the person in our family that shops there - not my husband. They hardly know him.
