Super Bowl Sunday, February 8th, 2026: After taking both dogs on a hike, both got grimy and grubby...especially the Maltipoo. We always choose Pet Food Express to give them a shower and this was the closest one. Located in a strip mall in Mill Valley and approximately less than a mile from 101, it was definitely convenient as it was the closest to Mt. Tam. Upon entering, there were two, young female workers by the cash register, and we didn't even get a greeting. In fact, the look on their faces was of disgust...as if we were bothering them or as if we disturbed them. No matter, we asked for a coin and informed them of our intent of a pet wash. The service was cold and disinterested. I can see it from both their body language, their eyes and most obvious of all, their facial expressions. I read these things - years and years of training comes naturally. I'm I n constant awareness and reading people. I get it, maybe they had a long day and it was close to ending their shift and they have to prep and clean the pet wash area before closing time. But it was only approximately 16:15 hours (4:15 PM) and their closing time is at 18:00 hours (6:00 PM) on a Sunday. Anyways, their negative energy lingered as we were washing our dogs while one of the workers cleaned the unused pet washing stations. The way she was cleaning was also off. It's like a kid upset that her parents told her to clean her bedroom kind of vibe. What was also bugging me was the condition of the aprons. They stunk like old mildew. I don't know when was the last time they were washed, but they needed to be soaked and rinsed in gallons of detergent to remove the funky smell. When we were done, we didn't even get a thank you or any type of acknowledgment unlike all the other Pet Food Express that we've been to. Just the same treatment when we all walked in. At least they were consistent. Guess we won't be using this pet wash station anymore. read more

Ive been in a very deep feline nutrition, rabbit hole. Studying for hours on end, every day for months. Ridiculous amounts of studying I decided on a raw diet with a can rotation of multiple brands. When I walked in I couldn't believe it. This selection is unreal. Every top notch brand I studied was there.......very few of the low quality wildly popular brands were there. I said "how are you so knowledgeable of healthy feline brands" he said "we have standards" I'm relieved to have this store. I walk in to other pet stores and it is Isles of all the big name brands. I'm not naming brands but they are all produced by Colgate, Mars, General Mills and nestle when you put in the work and study..... it makes sense why everyone is at the vet with urinary tract infections, kidney disease and dental issues (sound familiar) this is what dehydration looks like If you don't have time time to study you can just walk into Mill Valley pet Food express and grab anything off the shelf because it's pretty much all good the buyers here are very obviously knowledgeable of nutrition and Their selection appears to be curated by experts read more

Just wanted to share a great experience with VIP Pet Care services who came through in a clinch in getting Lola's long-needed Canine Influenza Vaccine booster. It's been in short supply all over wherever I looked and someone recommended VIP, as they purchase a lot of vaccine. They did! Both my vet (greatest in the world, Montecito Vet Clinic in Santa Rosa) and my Lola's day-care/spa (greatest in the world, duh, K-9 Activity Club in Santa Rosa) recommended VIP. The vet and two technicians were absolutely professional, efficient, kind and considerate in administering the booster and trimming her nails. It was like holding down a baby bull at first, but Lola settled right in. They were great, and kept me an arm's length, for liability sake, but turned out to be good as Lola saw me the whole time, and they knew what the &(( they were doing! Well done, VIP, for saving my bacon as there's a nasty respiratory bug in canines going around and I want to do whatever I can to keep her safe! Thank you!!!!! read more

Fantastic customer service and great selection. I arrived with my two dogs that have a habit of pulling during our walks so I walked them straight to Pet Food Express in Mill Valley. I was greeted by Sarah who went above and beyond to help me. She fitted both dogs with the proper size no pull harness and adjusted for a proper fit. This place gets two paws up from me and my pooch. My dog was in dire need of a bath, so I came in here based on Yelpers' recommendations. This Pet Food Express offers pretty extensive bathing facilities for your furry friend. For $15 you get 20 minutes under the sink, and this includes warm water, a selection of shampoos, an air-dryer, and towels. That's pretty much everything you need to get your dog clean. Since I had never used one of these facilities before, I asked one of their staff members (Dan) for some guidance. He couldn't have been more helpful. He literally walked us through the whole process and made the whole thing a quick, painless procedure. He even gave my dog a few free Scooby Snacks. Super sweet guy (give this young man a raise!). I'll definitely be back, and I'd gladly recommend this store to all my dog-owning friends. read more

I like this store especially for their dog washing facilities. It's so much easier to wash my dogs here than in our bathtub at home. Here's the drill: * I recommend to buy 3 as you'll get one for free; * I wash both my dogs at the same time as the timing allows for this quite easily; 1st step: wash and shampoo 2nd step: rinse 3rd step: blow dry My dogs hate the blow-dryer, so I actually have to make sure they get sufficiently dried with the towels, but thankfully the staff always provides plenty of towels. The staff here is very nice and - as you'd expect from a pet store - they're all super excited about every dog that comes in. However, Pet Express' policy of asking those of us over 60 to wait outside in excruciatingly hot and humid temps while the youngster manning the door "checks to see if there are too many people inside" isn't a good one. This store has the finest, kindest, and most helpful staff I have ever consistently experienced. 1 minute after closing- no problem, grab what you need. How to use the pet wash station- let me walk you through it and lend you a plastic collar. Don't know which treats to buy- I will recommend your puppies new favorite snack. First let me say that I buy all my dog food, treats, toys here, I'm pleased with that! However, I also bathe my dogs here, I like their set up, the soap comes out with the water, it makes the process easy. A few months ago the soap wasn't flowing, we reported it and they gave us bottles to use, nice but I can do that at home. That said, they told us the lines were being replaced, excellent. One more thing, I have two very large and fury dogs, lots of soap and water. Back we go, no soap or very little, the guy beside me is having the same issue. The employee is quite nice, tells me the pumps are working, etc! That's it, no compensation for another wash, nothing!!! Really, I think I'm going to take me business to Woodland Pet in strawberry Village. See how the soap works. One more thing, a wash is $15.00. Last thing...I am leaving and purchasing two bones, &16.00. I give the young clerk a $50. She tells me she cannot accept it, it's too large. $34 change, she won't do it, I don't have my wallet. I leave. We spend over $500/month on dog food and supplies. I'm taking my business to Woodland Pet!!! read more

There was a very light rain tonight but traffic was stopped dead on 101 as I made my way to Pet Express, in Mill Valley. Although I left enough time to get there, I didn't anticipate being frozen in place. In a panic because my dog, Birdie, would go on strike, not to mention voice her displeasure painfully loud if her favorite food wasn't served for dinner, I called the store and reached the always wonderful and convivial Charles and told him I was on my way but may be a few minutes late and would he please stay open for maybe just a couple of minutes past closing time at 7 pm? Very sympathetic about a hungry dog, he immediately said that he had a few things to take care of in the store and he would check with the manager, Sarah. The quick answer was that the door would be open. I nearly wept with joy. I was a few minutes late, grabbed Birdie's food, expressed my absolute delight about all of this and even told Sarah, whom I didn't have the pleasure of meeting before, that Charles had lousy taste in sports teams but otherwise he was a favorite of mine. When you have people who possess huge hearts and go out of their way so effortlessly and with such grace, I salute them and Pet Express for its fabulousness in hiring such lovely human beings. I went into PFE for the first time on Tuesday to pick up a few supplies for my newly-adopted puppy. I was feeling a bit overwhelmed, but lucky for me, Chris came to the rescue! He took the time to orient me, ask questions about my pup, and offered very helpful advice on training and the best items for our needs. I did not feel rushed or pressured to buy anything I didn't want/need. I returned today, with my puppy for a collar and harness fitting, as well as a dog tag engraving. Chris was not there, but two other lovely associates helped me - one even carried an item to the car for me! I was also able to return a hard-sided carrier that I didn't need (opted for a car booster seat instead) without any issues. Sticking to 4-stars for now as I can't yet speak on their prices, or dog-washing. I do plan on taking my pup back tomorrow for the weekly in-store vet clinic and will report back. read more

I stopped in Pet Food Express today since I was already shopping next door to pick up food and kitty litter for my cats. Although they did have the food I regularly buy, their prices are outrageous. The two bags of food and one bag of litter would have cost me around $20 more than at my regular store. Epic fail! This isn't a small "mom and pop" organization paying a premium because they don't have any negotiation power. This is a chain with over 62 locations in California who obviously have the buying power to get very good wholesale prices. What we are seeing here is corporate greed. They might be fine for their self-service dog wash, but I won't ever be buying food here when there are alternatives here in Mill Valley or over the hill in Corte Madera. read more

Quick & easy in & out all due to staff who knows their stuff! My 17.5 yr old cat's losing weight & disinterested in food. I asked for the cat food. Less than a minute at the shelf, a staff came to help. I think his name is Sean (he has a mohawk that resembles AstroTurf:) & has similar age cats. Gave me recommendations based on experience & knowledge. As soon as the food was in the bowl, my cat ate like nobody's business. A true lifesaver. I used to like this place...and my dog loves to shop here but that was before Jessie left for corporate. Unfortunate because Jessie's replacement knows nothing about customer retention. I followed Jessie from Novato to Mill Valley and even knew that she would be leaving for corporate but felt that things would remain status quo. I had purchased some Halloween outfits last year and they just didn't fit my dog. As luck would have it the return pile was boxed up and put away with the other costumes. Then when the time came to get the costumes out this year, I saw the bag to return to Pet Food Express. Yesterday I went into the store to buy my dog's food and asked about the returns from last year. I was told, "No problem, bring them in we'll take them back." They've always been generous about returns in the past, and with all the shopping I do at the store, it really didn't matter if it was cash or credit for the returns. Today was a completely different story. For the last five years I have been a faithful customer of Pet Food Express... and for less than $20 of items that they already agreed take back, the new "manager" Fran refused to take the items back. Even though I was told 24 hours earlier they would take the items back, "No Problem" was suddenly a problem. The exact same costumes were hanging on the rack for sale this year. The other locations have always graciously taken my returns without any hassle. I spend hundreds at the store each month and my dog loves going in to visit and shop... but that will be the last time I ever patron this establishment again. I will take my business somewhere else from now on. Buyer beware... under new management, the store is NOT what it used to be. read more

The store is neat, clean and well merchandised, and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable -- a HUGE improvement over Pet Club. While the prices seem high, they will price match. Employee, tall guy, with super sweet smile and bed head hair helped me. He was awesome and great customer service brought me back when my huge bag of cat food ran out. Today he was there again with his great smile, professional demeanour & speedy register skills. Went here today to get my dog a bath for the first time. The grooming area was top notch and super helpful. David was an incredible employee, helping me throughout and also guiding me for a bunch of products I needed before traveling across an ocean with my dog and cats. Give that man a promotion! Mmmm...they're just ok. I had just gotten a kitten a few weeks ago, so I thought what better place to go for all of her needs. I spoke with a gentleman, about how she was the runt of the litter and was under weight. He recommended a wet cat food called EVO. He said that it would put a little weight right on her. Unfortunately my poor little baby had really nad gas for days. I stopped feeding it to her, and went to Petco in San Rafael, while shopping at Trader Joe's. One of the employees I spoke to, an older woman not whom I explained my story to, told me that EVO wasn't supposed to even be on the shelves, because of recalls. She hadn't even seen it in at least 5-6 months. I did do research on the Evo website and called their customer service line. It was true. Sad not a single one of the employees knew this. I was really disappointed. My little ladybug is now on Wellness wet and dry food. Recommended by the lady at Petco and her Vet. So no more rotten smelling egg salad sandwich gas from my baby. Plus the woman with the short greyish hair is a little pushy and overbearing, for my taste. Won't be returning. read more

This is my go-to pet store! The entire staff not only remembers, but gives endless attention to my dog, Charlie, every time we come in. In fact, I feel bad going there without him because he loves it so much! The staff members also genuinely know their dog products. After working at the Humane Society for over a year, I like to think I know a thing or two about dog products. But these guys make me look like a newbie. From food to treats to 'paw salve' they have an answer for everything. And best of all, they can often back up their advice with their own dog's stamp of approval. Marie was SO helpful and very educational. She gave me a little tutorial on how to use the furminator properly on my dog to remove his excess undercoat. She also had me test out the item I ended up buying for my dog while I was still there at the store to make sure that the product would actually accomplish what I was hoping it would.
